Don't get me started on the "I disagree with this person!" reports we get.

Am I reading that right, are people genuinely reporting comments just because they disagree with them?

[–]CosmicKeysMeta-pirate of the dramutant wastelands[M] 77ポイント78ポイント  (16子コメント)

As an aside, mods would definitely rather people people be honest and write "I just hate this person" in the report box than a blank user report. A lot of wasted time goes into hunting out possible context for reports.

[–]shiigent 28ポイント29ポイント  (7子コメント)

The worst thing about being mobile is that there is no report box. Just a button for reporting.

When I modded a real sub I had someone and their 3 alts follow every post I made, downvoted them, and reported them (even in the CSS test sub).

Yes it happens.

[–]greyjackal 34ポイント35ポイント  (2子コメント)

"a real sub". Brave :D

[–]KEM10Damn, I'm not clever enough for this... 33ポイント34ポイント  (1子コメント)

I put that there because the two subs I "mod" right now are my CSS test sub and a placeholder for a friend's small business venture.

But I do like the unintended context.

[–]TheLadyEve 33ポイント34ポイント  (3子コメント)

Unfortunately, yes. And reports based on clear personal grudges "This is the same person who..." You get the idea. Clearly we don't act on those reports.

[–]ComedicSansThis is good for PopCoin 7ポイント8ポイント  (2子コメント)

Out of curiosity, do you get reports on people simply based on other subs they post to? I'm really sick of the "disregard this guy because he posts to (sub I dislike)" comments, it'd amuse me if you get spammed with them too.

[–]Deceptitron 11ポイント12ポイント  (1子コメント)

It happens more often than you'd think, and in just about every subreddit most likely. I know we've gotten a few at the sub I moderate. Some people tend to abuse it as if it was some sort of super downvote.

[–]max_f_robespierre 9ポイント10ポイント  (0子コメント)

[–]ucstructDon't gild me under any circumstances 63ポイント64ポイント  (2子コメント)

Its weird how SRD kind of gets swept along in different directions. I remember when the mods had to make mega threads on gender wars posts to cool the sub down because there were too many MRA type posts, now its kind of swung the other way.

People do tend to use this sub as their soapbox, getting people to cut down shitposting is a good start. Maybe more megathreads are in the cards in the future?

If we stop shitposting and circlejerking, though, how will we ever get anything to r/subredditdramadrama?

Perhaps this should be something added to the sidebar? Also, examples are always great, especially in context (like pulling an actual comment thread from the past and posting it as an example of a shitpost).

Maybe its just my personality, but I get absolutely terrified of being a shitposter, and it takes a lot of effort for me to work up to posting anything (along with many revisions).

Everyone knows there has been an influx of "SRD =SRS" talk lately. I just want to say that I disagree that it's gone that far.

With that said, there has been a tonal shift in the sub over the past year. Whenever this is pointed out, you hear the general argument of, "you're miss-remembering, it was always this divisive, just in the other direction. You're just butthurt that it's not YOUR way anymore."

Maybe I'm naive, but it would be nice to not have a clear bias in EITHER direction. Wouldn't it be fun to go into a thread in SRD, and not know the structure of the comments based on the title of the thread alone?

In a thread recently about GG (everyone's favorite topic), I saw another "blah blah ethics in journalism" meme posted within the first 4 comments. I commented that this meme that we've all seen 100+ times in SRD over the past 6 months would be the top post. Lo and behold, it ended up sitting at something like 600 karma, while my post was voted double digit negatives.

Who gives a fuck about karma right? The point is I knew this generic "shitpost" would end up as the top post. Just as you used to know "This is good for bitcoin" would end up as a top post in bitcoin drama however long ago.

There are so many truly funny and creative posters in SRD. There are similarly, a ton of poster who provide real and thoughtful insight when they post more serious comments. There's also a contingent of posters who are farming SRD for karma by posting the same set of generic and lazy comments that they know will reach the top, and downvoting anyone else. Why are we championing so much shitposting and generic memes?

[–]45flight2 89ポイント90ポイント  (18子コメント)

I've been subbed to and posting in this subreddit on various accounts literally since there was 1000 people subscribed and I know there was a time when I wasn't obliterated with downvotes simply for disagreeing with the overall opinion or providing contradictory but factual information. As of recently I can't even comment more than once in a row here. It's craziness and the worst part is NONE of the people will actually engage you if you're disagreeing with them. This sub has definitely changed a lot and I find the overall tone so repulsive as to make it not even worth browsing

[–]MastaClar 73ポイント74ポイント  (8子コメント)

This sub has definitely changed a lot and I find the overall tone so repulsive as to make it not even worth browsing

I'm on the same page as you. My posts will get opvoted if they have the same opinion as the circlejerk but downvoted if otherwise. That in itself isn't really a problem unless you're karmawhoring; the problem lies in that there won't even be a comment in response to me, just downvotes. There is no room for discussion, there is only room for the unoffical narrative.

I while back, I posted a comment critical of Anita Sarkeesan and Feminist Frequency in response to someone that said that they had no complaints about her videos/kickstarter.

I was critical about the timeliness of her releases, her dishonesty in regards to games shown (as in what she stated is not in the game), and that it seemed like she just went to TVTropes for research and read down a list.

Mine got buried while all the circlejerking "any dissent means your pro GG" got upvoted.

If someone disagreed, they should have wrote why. Instead, I got downvotes into the double digits for not having the same opinion as them with not a single comment in response.

I think GG is an extreme "movement" and I disagree with the narratives and values they push. However, that doesn't mean I can't or shouldn't be critical of things that are on the opposite side of the GG spectrum.

[–]Tall_for_a_Jockey 22ポイント23ポイント  (3子コメント)

Holy shit, yes. It's not about the issues. I'm not sure that it ever was, but now it's become about the outrage. Anita Sarkeesian raises many, many valid points. She also spews a lot of horseshit. (And if you don't like that assessment, consider this: she knows who she is talking to very well, knows how they will react, and I don't think she'd be satisfied in a world where her videos missed the mark.) Of course, that's supposition, and I ain't a mind reader.
In one of her videos, she talks about someone making a game in which the female herione "breaks free" from her oppression the way you'd expect the protagonist of some media produced by Communist China circa 1965. I would buy that game and play the shit out of it! I suspect the only reason games like that aren't being made is...because I'm the only one.
Hey, while I've got you on the line here, there are some questions I've always wanted to ask:
* How do you prove consent?
* If you were female (sorry, I can't detect enough gender bias to know) would you rather live in the world today or twenty years ago? Why or why not?
* Why did people hate Sheryl Sandburg, then champion her book? (Sorry, that's a leading question...I'd make a shitty lawyer.)
* What's wrong with wanting social justice?
* Is it OK to use the word "retard" to describe someone of average or higher intelligence?

[–]ComedicSansThis is good for PopCoin 28ポイント29ポイント  (4子コメント)

It's craziness and the worst part is NONE of the people will actually engage you if you're disagreeing with them.

[–]OrneryTanker 15ポイント16ポイント  (3子コメント)

That's something I've noticed here which I haven't noticed in any other sub, and it's just insane. People will literally comb through your entire comment history for no other reason other than the fact that you disagreed with them.

Everyone knows there has been an influx of "SRD =SRS" talk lately. I just want to say that I disagree that it's gone that far.

In my opinion, the calls of "SRS-lite!" are less about the SJCultist infestation and more about how before, you were allowed to laugh at and enjoy the drama, because it was drama.

Then it became about something the poster disagreed with, and wanted echochambery support about. From there, as there was no real drama in the linked threads, folks had to make their drama in the comments section. Usually based around smugness and condescension for those who take the hardline stance against whatever was linked.

It's the "I don't like this, support me echochamber, you're my only friends!" posts that really lend the SRS styled flavour.

[–]Ebu-GogoWhan that drama with his popcorn soote 162ポイント163ポイント  (12子コメント)

I don't know. I wasn't a big fan of the SRD=SRS comments for a long time, and I still don't agree with it if you take it literally, but I am pretty sure there's an increase in ex-SRS members, or those with alt accounts, that have come to this sub.

There's just a way that the phrasing of the comments have changed, the way it's getting a lot more serious and incredibly one-sided most of the time, that just reminds me a lot of SRS.

The top comment in a lot of threads, especially when the subject is gender/race/other social justice topic, is this long, condescending rundown about what is supposed to be the opinion to have. It's usually just an intro to the counter jerk. Complete with all the one-liners.

[–]Oxus007Recreationally Offended 77ポイント78ポイント  (1子コメント)

I wouldn't even mind the increase in comments from that sphere if counter-jerk comments didn't get BURIED by the downvote dogpile.

[–]justcool393TotesMessenger Shill 32ポイント33ポイント  (0子コメント)

...I am pretty sure there's an increase in ex-SRS members, or those with alt accounts, that have come to this sub.

Hell, there have been many times where I see one of the Archangelles (not Dovakin, I'm talking about SRS mods) or Dworkinator or something come up to comment. One recent example was the intortus thread. It's usually only in SJ threads though from what I've noticted

[–]rb_techEdit: upvoted with alts for visibility 10ポイント11ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah, I feel the same way. And as much as the "DAE SRD=SRS??!1" gets thrown around, it doesn't change the fact that it's somewhat true, there's this sort of vibe that's developed over the last year or so that while we all enjoy the drama, you will participate in the liberal circlejerk or you will be chastised. For me, this is most apparent in gun drama, because I'm a gun owner and it seems around here, unless you're in favor of major, sweeping gun control reform, you're just discounted as an idiot.

[–]TheLadyEve 62ポイント63ポイント  (13子コメント)

Fuck this website

As TITRC said in the OP.

Talking about how shitty redditors are is tired. It's boring discussion that leads to the same 25ish comments. It's also not SRD's purpose.

You know it had to happen, though. The purpose of the thread just called for it getting filled with nonsense like that. I'm willing to be patient and see how it shakes out overall in the subreddit. Hoping that folks are just getting it out of their system.

And I agree with hate for shitposts. I used to be pretty strict about pulling them. I need to get back into doing that.

[–]InOranAsElsewhereBots' Rights Activist 19ポイント20ポイント  (4子コメント)

Yeah, it was inevitable that the top tier comment would be a shitpost and meme tree. I would say there is a difference between the shitposts up there though and things like "Fuck this website" and "Redditors suck," just on the grounds of tone, though.

The top comment in here was a joke, at least, rather than smug superiority shitposting. I mean yeah, tired, unfunny memes can get irritating, but I think the difference in tone between those two types of shitposts should be kept in mind.

[–]GoatsacShitlord 11ポイント12ポイント  (3子コメント)

That's what I meant when the topic of the thread just begged for it. And in the context, it was actually kinda funny. I guess because you're waiting for it, or seeing if folks can get creative with it, for a little bit.

It's the karma-fishing, zero substance nonsense that gets tiresome.

Wouldn't it be fun to go into a thread in SRD, and not know the structure of the comments based on the title of the thread alone?

I think this is the crux of the problem, certain titles attract certain crowds of people. I haven't browsed here much recently but I'm not convinced most of this sub actually cares either way about GG, but it's become so repetative those people have no motivation to click on GG drama, only those who are anti/pro GG still care about it. Same with some other frequent sources of drama, unless you have a strong leaning towards one side of the debate it's kind of lost it's appeal, which leads you to a situation where the only people commenting on it (in SRD) are people who want to chip in with their own opinion rather than laugh. I'm not really sure if there's much you can do about it though, you can't force people with no strong opinion on a topic to read and comment on the drama if they are bored of it.

Also, can we add FEEEEEEEMALES to the list of shitposts? It's getting used when the word female is actually used correctly, and is somehow evidence that whoever used females is clearly sexist. (I mean, half the time they probably are, but sometimes it's definitely a regional language thing).

*On the topic of "FREEZE PEACH", when you see comments like "Republicans are a gay hate party" which I remember from a discussion a week ago I think, and reports of people flagging posts they disagree with, I don't like the concept of some users judging what should be allowed.

It's even worse than "sexy times" and such because it's a way to shut down any form of dissent or conversation. It's a rude dismissal of whatever the other person has to say. If you're going to ridicule someone and their opinions, at least be clever about it.

Have you ever considered experimenting with the post structure?

For instance you could get rid of titles for a few days to see what happens (replacing them perhaps only with the subreddit the drama is from).

Don't get me wrong, I often like the titles here - I just wonder if the shitposting would diminish (a lot of it seems to rely on clickbaitish titles) without the titles.

It might even get more people to actually try and understand what is going on before forming an opinion.

Dunno how feasible this would be as a short experiment.

Honestly? Most of the "discussions" here are pretty bad. It's pretty much "YOU'RE A CIRCLEJERKER" "I'M NOT CIRCLEJERKING" "CIRCLEJERK CIRCLEJERK CIRCLEJERK"

SRD is only good for pointing and laughing. When it comes to serious discussion, SRD posters' opinions are just as dumb as the rest of Reddit's.

[–]PoogansAdvocate for the repeal of Unfair Flavor Laws 37ポイント38ポイント  (0子コメント)

Stop circlejerking

[–][deleted] 11ポイント12ポイント  (1子コメント)

reddit's different communities cover the entire spectrum of opinions on every concievable topic from prolapse porn to birds with human arms.

Communities on the Internet and in the real world tend to get circlejerky as they begin to eke out a communal identity but opinions are more complex than just "Reddit's opinions are dumb but SRD's opinions are dumber". Like I don't even fucking means to be honest.

Circlejerking is a problem but the solution isn't iditotic reductive statements about opinions. The relationship of individual to group is complex and with many back and forth movements of influence and change and manipulation.

reddit hasn't reinvented the way public forums build consensus and form factions. Just give more thought than saying "you circlejerk!!!" "you opinion is dumb for me"

Any community can have good discussions of you fucking try

I don't know how much I want to type here, lest I turn into a copypasta, or a "it was better before Digg" rose colored glasses type comment, so I'll add here ways I think people can improve their comments. This is something I typed up a few months ago, so I'm sure there is room for improvement, but here it is:

Providing interesting comments is tricky. You have to be a good communicator and successfully present your idea. Here are a few methods I have noticed, and some other thoughts as well.

Obviously the best method is to be funny. Humor has been the subject of discussion for a very long time. I think the TL;DR tends to be to make a connection in an unexpected way. Dickbutt.

Another method is to provide several topics at a time. This allows those seeing your comment/content to pick something specific to respond to, and it lets the other person drive the conversation. It involves more people, and generates more interest. One example would be to examine how some of the "here's my crib" posts perform, karma-wise. A single photo would probably not do as well as several selected shots throughout the domicile. Include several thoughts or ideas in your comment.

Make a comment, ask a followup question. This prompts the person to whom you're responding (or in general, in the case of a public web forum) to becoming engaged in your comment.

Be short, be concise. Brevity is the soul of wit. Don't be a chatty Cathy. Get to your point, and get out.

The idea is to elicit a response. It's easy to do in some subs, although this method doesn't always work, but Namedroping someone will get your comment noticed. Unidan got this all the time, but Vargas and WayFairer have to deal with it, too, among others, I'm sure. /u/_lilpoundcake, /u/mar10wright, and /u/reverend_green1 will definitely see this post, although that possibly would have happened anyway.

Re-read your comment before posting. Make sure the word choices flow well. Is there a better way to phrase it?

Be mildly controversial, but in a way that the group agrees with. Use vulgarity sparingly. Use everything sparingly.

Stop using old worn out jokes. Make new connections, and new ideas.

Metaphors and analogies can be useful if used correctly.

My thoughts are beginning to turn into a ramble which resembles a lasagna that has only been in the oven for 20 minutes. Go out there and make some quality comments, people.

[–]reverend_green1(א_‎0) 6ポイント7ポイント  (0子コメント)

is this karmawhoring 101

[–]N8theGr8 26ポイント27ポイント  (16子コメント)

You don't get points with salad.

I really think that compelling comments beget upvotes, though. Most Redditors recognize when you put effort into a comment, and they recognize when something is well thought out. Just take a look at the stuff /u/RamsesThePigeon writes.

A lot of people think that when their comment gets downvoted it's because evil SJWs are disagreeing with them, and while this is sometimes the case, it's just as often a fact that they have poorly presented their idea.

If we want to get into karmawhoring, I'd talk about timing and placement, too. I'm just trying to help people create more quality comments. There's an element of creative writing, to be sure, and the better you can communicate your ideas, the more successful you'll be.

Man dies in first meme-related murder

By InOranAsElsewhere REDDIT DAILY NEWS Friday, June 9, 2017, 10:32 AM

reddit user /u/robotortoise made history today after being involved in the first reddit-related murder. Authorities report that the user, as part of an on-going feud, covered user /u/bonjouramigos with jet fuel and then lit him on fire while eating popcorn.

Authorities speculate that robotortoise was jealous of the dankness of bonjouramigos's memes and was seeking to usurp him, but reports remain unclear and the investigation is ongoing. Regardless, while this may not establish whether jet fuel can or cannot melt dank memes, we know now that it can melt dank memers.

As someone who leans antisrs, I don't mind the massive SJW infestation. I don't even mind the flurry of downvotes for anything remotely critical of the reigning ideological line in this sub, cuz I'm brave. But a shitlord can't even get a discussion going anymore. Downvotes and snarky two-word replies, that's all an old forgotten soldier for the white capitalistic patriarchy can hope for nowadays in this hellhole. You can't even suggest a woman in a thread didn't act in the most angelic way possible without being told to "go back to TRP". Argue or get off my ass, pinkos.

The great discussions in SRD are truly great

The what? Now you're just making shit up.

And the so called "great discussions" are usually a shit hole. Because as you said, you get downvoted if against the jerk. You will have 200 comments "discussing" and it will be that one poor soul against everyone.

Doesn't matter that the poor soul was an idiot, it just seems maybe some people need to lay off that downvote button.

[–]KomaruWolfI gotta go crazy just to stay sane 11ポイント12ポイント  (3子コメント)

Yeah, can't say I'd be sorry to have low effort shitposting cracked down on somewhat, as well as general Circlebroke-ness, as much as I've been occasionally guilty of both in the past. I wouldn't want to see this place go too far in the other direction, tho, not that I think anybody in the current mod team would try and make it totally serious business.

Says the fucking mod that told someone to kill themself because they didn't agree with them.

[–]two_bagels_please 12ポイント13ポイント  (35子コメント)

Lurker here (at least more lurking than posting):

I think it's a good idea. I don't know why anyone would want shit posts and not quality comments. Still, it's hard to moderate, enforce, or even just encourage, since there's no clear definition of a "shit post."

What I would be more interested in is [fill in the blank]-free weeks. Granted, I do more reading than commenting, but I find that a lot of trite comments follow the low-hanging fruit of drama. You mentioned that we love steak drama. I don't, and I know a lot of users agree with me. Yet, we constantly see it, and it generates similar sentiments over and over again. Rather than encouraging subscribers to write more thoughtful comments, prevent repetitive topics! Every week, you can ban one kind of drama. People could even vote on it during the week prior. It could be something like this:

WEEK 1: No Steak Drama

WEEK 2: No FPH Drama

WEEK3: No Bitcoin Drama

Etc., etc.

Thoughts? Have the users fish for interesting material.

[–]TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERKCaballero Blanco[S,M] 16ポイント17ポイント  (25子コメント)

What I would be more interested in is [fill in the blank]-free weeks.

we've considered this in the past and we ultimately rejected the idea. the one time we constricted posts, it... well, it's still talked about to this day as a big SRD failure.

maybe it's time to revisit the topic.

[–]CANOODLING_SOCIOPATHHates freedom 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I've always considered SRD the non-shitposting version of SRS. Personally my problem with SRS was always that it took on the attitude of a circlejerk and refused to allow for discussion, which I find fun.

So I'm glad that you are taking a stand on shitposting. There are plenty of subreddits where it is appropriate but SRD is not one of them.

Why are the efforts to fix up SRD just futzing around at the edges? If you want to end the shitposting, set your sights on ending the insufferable circlejerking.

The last new rule I saw was about criclebroke-ish headlines, this post is about low effort comments. Those are light cosmetic tweaks. You'll just get bland headlines that have slightly more wordy circlejerk posts.

The level of effort does not matter when you compare 5-word snark or 500-word /r/smugredditdrama material. Any why would anyone waste effort on a well-written resonable-person post when they know the response will be one of the two options above?
