Has Google completely abandoned its finance product? (self.investing)

At one time, finance.google.com was a pretty solid finance aggregator, with a lot of the top stories at a glance, good data on companies you were following, nice tools for comparison, etc. But recently it feels completely abandoned.

Two of the "Top 5 gainers" on the front page, Burger King and Walgreens, have been there for months despite not trading since December. The "top story" is frequently something like "Dow gains on news..." from 10 hours ago, even though the market just closed down 100 points. The mobile experience, especially on iOS, is atrocious and unusable. The news that is aggregated on each company page is just bot-spam, with crap like "insider unloads 139 shares" (actually saw this today), with huge news from just days ago getting buried under it.

I mean, what the hell? How does this happen to a site that gets 30M+ visitors a month?

I completely agree - it's not the product it once was and with Google's history of ditching products, I certainly wouldn't be shocked.

I actually really like Yahoo Finance. I was surprised how good the chart view was - you can add EMA, SMA, etc.

I think for whatever reason Google decided not to really try to compete with yahoo finance, which has always been better. Google finance was close for a little while years ago but they have totally fallen off. I'd love for them to get back in the game.

main thing it has going for it, is when I open Chrome, I have Google Finance at my finger tips. and I can easily swap accounts. Never having used Yahoo, not sure if you can juggle multiple accounts easy, not that it really matters.

Yahoo finance is surprisingly good and aggregates news from a ton of sites

When I google a ticker symbol, the top result is Yahoo Finance. I think that speaks volumes.

I agree, but in tests I've run Google stock prices usually load faster than Yahoo's. Not by much, but enough to make that my default when I'm accessing data from Excel.

Also why do yahoo finance and google finance show different prices for google stock.. What split are they treating differently?

There are two tickers for Google, one for non voting shares. These are typically off by a few percentage points, so if it's close this may be why.

Well, not for work or anything - excel beats it in just about every way in that respect. Fuck cloud based software, I don't care what other people say, I can feel the lag when I'm hammering in data.

But I use it exclusively for the google finance function. I used to have a set of practice portfolios when I was in college and before I first started trading. Now I just go back and revisit them every now and then.

Has to be. Can't trust the data on there because the quotes for some stocks are old. I switched to Yahoo Finance (who by the way are apparently in the midst of a total makeover).

Holy shit, I thought I was the only one this happened to lol.

What do you guys recommend in place of google finance? Even the news stories themselves are barely related to a lot of the stocks I follow. I don't know why I still use it really.

The website works fine for me. I see news up there from Reuters, Forbes, et al. And when I click on my tracked portfolio, I get news about all the stocks listed therein.

I find the data-entry element of my porfolio a little onerous, and there are occasionally one too many Finance blog stories, but they don't drown out long-standing news sources.

I gave up on the app and just installed SigFig which actually offers at-a-glance info.

The Google Cards I get on my phone still provide up to date info on major stock activity.

I think you're having an issue of some sort, I don't see BK or WAL in gainers at all. you need to clear your cookies or some shit.

Only problem i have with it is the charts don't work on chrome randomly.

I dunno, I just did some incognito and the top price (not mkt cap) gainers are still wag and bk. same on multiple devices too. I mean, that's probably the least of my complaints too.
