First Kenya will start using it, then the Keynesians will come around.

Hayek, hayek, hayek.

Could someone please ELI5 the problem with Keynesian Economics?

Well, like you're five... Keynesian economics says that the government should reward you for breaking things.

How about ELI25

Okay, then in that case -- Keynesianism, what Keynes actually advocated, doesn't have much of a problem. Keynes simply said that when national economies are threatened by outside forces (such as world wars, for instance), governments should manipulate currencies in order to promote economic stability. Basically, when your factories are getting blown up, you should probably promote some capital accumulation so that they can be re-built. And when your population suffers a massive decline, you should promote consumption and create some artificial prosperity in order to offset that. And this artificial consumption should be offset by future savings in order to help the economy return to a steady state once the threat has passed.

The problem only appears now that his ideas have been co-opted by privately owned central banks and their bought-and-paid-for academic spokespersons -- people who (ironically) profit from international conflict and who create wars in order to manipulate and parasitically feed off of national economies. Keynesianism has now morphed into perma-Keynesianism, or permanent money-printing that promotes unsustainable resource consumption and unsustainable population growth, that sows the seeds of future conflicts, and whose benefits accrue only to the parasitical globalist financial classes who are protected from the effects of the monetary inflation they promote.

Do you know of any papers/articles/youtube vids that go into more details and specifics about this?

Goddamn that was well written.

At its core, it is an economic school of thought based on the assumption that markets don't clear (ala Say's law ).

This underpins theories regarding the necessity of governments and central banks to implement counter-cyclical monetary and fiscal policy.

It operates on the principle that the government can bootstrap an economy.

Is this a reference to the movie "the drop"?

Then finally Obama, le Truest Kenyan of Them All, will be convinced to open a blockchain.into account while the masses cheer him on. Janet Yellen will be in the background sobbing.

"Don't you mean blockchain.gov?"

...

Run, you fools!

That's quite an editorialized title.

From the article, there are a few leaps between "promotes", or even "directly funds":

Last month, Bitsoko won a Grand Challenges Explorations research grant worth $100,000... The GCE scheme [is] funded by Bill & Melinda Gates foundation

Ah the old "please tell me why this article is bullshit" comment. Thanks for summarizing.

Yep, I'm always like "someone please give me the tl;dr on how badly this is embellished or just outright false. Gotta love bitcoin subreddit.

Surprisingly, nearly 30% of Bitsoko users are from Russia, as Gibson Juma, a co-founder told an online media: “We think we have been getting users from Russia because of the banning and blocking of some bitcoin related websites in the country.”

I knew he would come around

Popper's book makes it seem like Wences convinced him.

Guessing you didn't read the article then.

What part of the article are you referring to exactly?

The part where Bill wasn't involved.

According to this quote, Bill Gates specifically instructed the foundation "not to touch Bitcoin" before. It seems that this is no longer the case. So it would be fair to say that he has come around here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend_and_extinguish

he repeatedly said he wants such a digital currency to be "not anonymous", i.e. proprietary; maybe he sees Bitcoin as a stepping stone or way to prepare people for now

the article linked to you above talks about him reconsidering this possibliy.

He thought non-reversability was a bug, we think it is a feature

This grant was simply part of a funding round for "digital inclusion". Out of about five companies that were funded in this round, this was the only bitcoin related grant. The digital inclusion focus is focused towards encouraging merchant adopting of digital financial services. The foundation is not promoting anything, they have just given 100k as a "trial" before the million dollar round that follows

I'm not sure either if he personally came around. The foundation carrying his name promoting bitcoin might be a hint though.

i read somewhere recently that wences casares had a conversation with him and confronted him specifically about his view of bitcoin and he was taken aback and said something to the effect of "you're right, I should take another look at bitcoin". So, to me this is the message that he is finally coming around to bitcoin.

somewhere = Digital Gold book

It explains in the article the funding flow. B+M funds gtand challenges that than ran a contest and picked some winners(this process he wouldn't have been involved in and is outlined on their site).

I'm actually in the process of helping a Kenyan prince transfer millions of dollars out of Kenya by giving him all my bitcoin to release the fund and to act as the next of kin to receive it, I'm hoping to double, maybe triple my investment. He hasn't emailed in a while, hope he's ok.

Mildly humorous, but you missed it by 68 hours by car!

From a distance, I suppose all African countries appear to converge. But in fact, Kenya is pretty far away from Nigeria. Google Maps says 4902 km, which is further than it lists New York to L.A.

...and this is why I don't get invited to parties.

No, he is most certainly talking about a Kenyan prince. Kenyan princes like bitcoin, Nigerian princes prefer wire transfer. It's a cultural thing, you know.

I hate to eliminate all party invitations for 2015 and 2016, but here goes:

The Monarchy of Kenya was only in existence from 1963-1964. The remaining princes, Phillip, and descendents Charles, Andrew, Edward, and their descendents (including William, and Henry/Harry) all hang out at Windsor Castle.

The Nigerian Royalty includes the Dan Fodio Family, with Abu Bakr Atiku, Ali Babba bin Bello, Nana Asma’u, Usman dan Fodio, Muhammed Bello, the Royalty of Borno with `Abd ar-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Amin, Abubakar Garbai of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi of Borno, Ashimi of Borno, Umar Ibn Abubakar Garbai of Borno, Bukar Kura of Borno, Ibrahim Kura of Borno, Kyari of Borno, Muhammad al-Amin al-Kanemi, Mustafa Ibn Umar El-Kanemi of Borno, Sanda Kura of Borno, Sanda Wuduroma of Borno, Umar Ibn Muhammad of Borno, Umar of Borno, the Yoruba Royal Families, which have tons of princes, Ezekwe, and Nnama.

Check your email, and look for a British name.

Maybe he's been trampled by an elephant or cursed by a witch-doctor? I think you'd better send him some more money so he doesn't starve or get shot in civil war.

Let's see, did I miss any African stereotypes?

"If you go to a restaurant and pay using bitcoin blockchain, the owner of the business will send us the bitcoin blockchain and receive mobile money in exchange."

FTFY.

silly buggers can't use a simple search for bitcoin and replace with blockchain.

And now this makes me instantly skeptical of the mainstream banking establishments plan for Bitcoin or something like Bitcoin.

I strongly suspect that something related to bitcoin like technology will be used to get rid of paper cash, to create a more controlled cashless society. This is a real concern for me and when I see someone like Bill Gates promoting bitcoin it instantly makes me paranoid.

[–]Leithm 0

They need to give Bitpesa a call, properly funded they could get their commissions down from 3% I suspect.

That was quick.

Why is Gates so obsessed with Africa? Is there something he knows over there that I don't??

False title, nothing to see here folks. Stroll along.

I see this as a great thing for Kenya and Bitcoin

Not sure if I would interpret too much about Gates position on BTC in general

More accurately, bitpay clone seeking to operate in Kenya received a small grant from the foundation.

I can't begin to express how fucking proud this makes me. One of the key team members on this project is Daniel Bloch, my cofounder of the College Cryptocurrency Network. I thought Danny was absolutely crazy when, in the face of all the opportunity us two received from our organization, he joined a team of our students from Kenyatta University in Nairobi to start a "Coinbase for Africa." These guys are so kickass, and doing such great work, it's amazing to see their efforts recognized by such an important organization. Sure, the title is misleading, but this is a excellent step forward for a continent that can use all the financial empowerment it can get!

Anyone have that Bill Gates quote from "Digital Gold"?

The last page of Digital Gold: "You know what? I told the foundation not to touch Bitcoin and that may have been a mistake," Gate said, amicably. "We are going to call you."

They did.

The last page of Digital Gold: "You know what? I told the foundation not to touch Bitcoin and that may have been a mistake," Gate said, amicably. "We are going to call you."

Yeah that one! /u/changetip 1 internets

There was also some part of promoting some expensive alternative instead of giving the poor people access to the TCP/IP of money.

The Bitcoin tip for 1 internets (1,411 bits/$0.42) has been collected by coolhandluck.

what is ChangeTip?

It was Wences that approached Gates at the Allen & Co conference. He told Bill, "You're spending billions to make poor people poorer."

The Gates Foundation was pushing people into the financial system that they could not afford. I'm not sure what that was but I'm sure it was institutional and would have enriched others. According to the book, Gates got a little defensive but Wences gently pushed on and to Gates' credit, he understood and gave Wences an opening.

Someone told Gates Bitcoin was a scam so he dismissed it. He may have taken a second look and understood it is a way to let the poor obtain and store value.
