The ESPY Awards is an event that celebrates the world of sports. This year, 2015 marks its 23rd year. ESPN, athletes and sports fans around the world look forward to dedicating an evening to recognize the accomplishments and milestones in every sport.

Athletes and sports achievements are not the only things highlighted at the ESPYs , agents of change in the world of sports as well.

Last year, at the 2014 ESPY awards, the late ESPN broadcaster Stuart Scott was honored with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award. His acceptance speech became one of the most circulated video clips of the year. Watch Stuart Scott's speech on YouTube here.

Scott passed away from cancer in January 2015. With Scott spending his formative years in North Carolina and being an active UNC - Chapel Hill alumnus, the Tarheel state mourned the hardest. Though he has passed, many continue to honor him. The individuals that truly live on his legacy are his greatest treasure, his daughters Taelor and Sydni Scott.

Stuart Scott changed the way people view the ESPYs. As long as the annual award show hosted by ESPN goes on, Stuart Scott will forever be associated with it. In much the same way Jimmy Valvano’s speech became an instant classic, Scott’s passionate ESPYs’ address continues to move viewers each time they watch it.

The ESPYs speech was one of Scott’s most public appearances before his tragic death just six months later. In the speech, Scott reminded the audience, “When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live and in the manner in which you live.”

The 2014 ESPYs were marked by a stunningly beautiful and inspiring speech from Stuart Scott when he received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at a ceremony he attended only days after what was one of many hospital stays that he endured in his lengthy battle against cancer.
