Mine says, "The stars and planets will not affect your life in any way." What did everyone else get?

Oh shit, I got the same! We must be very compatible... ;)

I got the same too. We should hang out . . . but let's not go to the planetarium.

Why bother with a planetarium when the stars and planets will not affect our lives in any way?

We'll have sex under them, that'll show them that they don't control us!

Pretty sure any time someone has had sex in the history of the Earth it has taken place under the stars.

Well not technically. There's no real direction in space, so really were within the stars.

Well not technically. Something something black science guy, we ARE stars.

But from the frame of reference of earth, where there is direction, under is a real concept -- i.e. everyone is above the center of the Earth, and everyone is below the sky. It's all about definitions.

Just don't roll over the juice boxes.

Edit: Wow surprised at the number of people getting the reference after almost 20 years!

Why bother with a planetarium when the stars and planets will not affect our lives in any way anyway?

Mine says "Bad luck and misfortune will infest your pathetic soul for all eternity" .....weird.

Huh, I got "you will die in 7 days". You wanna hang out?

Sure, but I'm pretty booked. How about a week from tomorrow?

Okay!.....

Hey wait a minute... your trying to wait until I'm dead. If you don't want to hang out just tell me.

Did you get this from a show? I just got a flashback from my younger years reading that.

Edit: Rocko's Modern Life! Haven't thought about that show in forever

You keep using that word.

I do not think it means what you think it means.

Not to mention the sun being a star that heats our planet so we don't freeze...

I'm not even trying to be 'that guy' here, but a planetarium should be putting in the effort instead of copy/paste the same statement multiple times.

Well, I didn't before...

God damnit, now every time I see that scene all I'm going to see is Steven Tyler leering at them from the closet.

Earth is a strong terrestrial planet that don't need no gas giant to protect her

Ppssshh that's a lie perpetuated by Jupiter so people forget about the huge storm its creating to destroy our solar system.

Yeah, Jupiter is a pretty helpful planet, nice to have around the solar system, but my go-to helpful planet would have to be Earth. Earth snuggles an atmosphere around us, shielding us from the cruel vacuum of space. Plus its where Breaking Bad was set, and filmed.

Wait shit it does?

Does it pull them in by gravitational force or did it coincidentally block them because of its sheer size?

I think its the gravitational force if anything. It wouldnt be big enough to just be in the way of everything.

Gravity. It just throws them away. Jupiter is absolutely gigantic, but it is nothing compared to the emptiness of space.

I'm guessing due to the gravity. Jupiter is insignificantly small (or is it significantly small?) relative to the size of our solar system.

Not really. It used to fuck us up with asteroids, actually, but now there's none left. Billions of years ago, Jupiter's gravity slingshotted a shitload of asteroids all over (Late Heavy Bombardment), and the ones it didn't are now in fairly stable orbits. Next planet-killer headed our way is in 2880 with (IIRC) 0.005% chance of hitting us.

Also, Jupiter probably didn't rip a planet apart; but it did prevent one from forming, which amounts to the same thing but with less-visually-stunning special effects.

And then there is the social aspect of people trying to divine the future based of astrology then other people hearing about it. Whether the other people believe it or not they are effected. Take the guy who made the presentation for example, he made the presentation because someone thought the stars and planets were aligned in a meaningful way and s/he feels the need to dispute that. That's an effect.

The astrologers were right! The alignments of the stars and planets do affect us!

Yeah and also the Earth is a planet, so it's likely to affect us in certain ways.

Yes, but to paraphrase Carl Sagan, the doctor and the midwife present at your birth had a greater gravitational effect on you when you were born.

Funny that it was probably written by an astronomer, whose life is very directly affected by the stars and planets

Technically, we are all made of star stuff.

Plus, I'm looking forward to the hi-res pictures of Pluto, and there was that story of the huge supernova yesterday.

That's because pluto is neither a star or a planet. Your horoscope doesn't say anything about that.

There's actually some legitimate science behind astrology, although probably not in the way that you'd think. Babies born at different times of year (at least in the Northern Hemisphere, the opposite would be the case for the Southern Hemisphere) experience quite different things at different formative stages of development. This could lead to people with similar birthdays having similar personality traits at a rate that's not statistically insignificant.

That being said, it has nothing at all to do with the movement of planets, except, obviously, our own.

edit: It would have been better if instead, for each horoscope, there was some inspirational Carl Sagan quote.

If the horoscope became true the instant you read it, technically wouldn't you enter a state of zero gravity?

An admirable evasion of whore-master man, to lay his goatish disposition to the charge of a star! [–]coolshifts 10

My theory is that the date you are born does have an impact. Mainly due to the weather. There must be some difference between a baby born in the winter and spending the first few months indoors and one born in the spring and getting lots of trips to the park for example. I'm not saying any particular date or season is better, but surely it has an impact. It may even lead to specific personality traits.

Can someone elaborate on the downvotes please? At least this hypothesis has some ground to stand on, weather affects us everyday, in many ways. The amount of sunlight for example plays a strong role in the release of certain hormones and vitamins, thus influencing our mood.

Edit: a missing letter Edit 2: well, he was down to -5 when I wrote this :-)

Metaphysics are an art rather than a science, more of a way to make sense of the ever changing patterns of reality. Western astrology is focused on a cycle of seasons, and less on the stars themselves. So, he has the main concept right.
To rough out a basic idea, say your birthday falls in the early summer, so as a child you would have still been in school, but the weather would have been nicer. Your birthday parties would likely include friends from school who haven't left for the summer, and you would likely play outside in the sunshine. This would affect your perception of celebrating your life (as you're doing it on a specific day), and give you a tendency to have a more "sunny" personality.
Like science-physics, this is just being measured with a couple variables, in a "vacuum". Every little thing happening has its own season, and metaphysics are a way of trying to measure the way things play out and relate to each other. Again, art, not a science.

I don't find that sort of petty snark either funny or becoming of an institution of science/learning.
