Somebody posted asking if there was any support for those having suicidal thoughts because of lost bets. A moderator, in his infinite 14 y/o wisdom, chimed in and encouraged the OP to kill themselves. It's been a massive fiasco.

Edit: 14 was a joke. I don't know his actual age.

Suicide. Just do it

which sparked tons of controversy and I felt bad for that user, there's no way that should be a joke at all and that was just completely horrible

I remember a 89-11, where the 11 won. Canadian and ASC where playing. I bet on Canadian and won a bunch. Some guy threatened suicide on the chat when he lost 4 Asiimov AWPs FT. He was joking, but some people went a bit crazy for a couple seconds.

Glad to see this on here. Depression can lead to unhealthy outlets, some of which surprisingly involve spending beyond one's own means intentionally. It's like living your life on tilt, 24/7.

Counter-Strike was actually one of the few things I still enjoyed during the deepest parts of my depression and I know from experience that playing the game vs. getting heavily involved in betting have very different effects - at least on me.

So, the UK and Canada have the most information hotlines and information, are we the most vulnerable? Probably a real question here, fairly interested. Anyone got statistics?

Canada is ranked on 70 and the UK on 105 (for suicides per 100000 people living in the country, male and female combined)

You can see quite a few developed countries and areas with high levels of suicide, an example here would be Japan, scoring 7th place for the term "Suicides per 100,000 people per year", yet they've only got 2 hotlines listed on the sub-Reddit.

Would you think this is down to lack of effort being put in by the government and businesses because maybe there is just too many people in the country, or would it be that these two hotlines can handle thousands of people a day.

I think I'm taking too much interest into this, but it's just a kind of curious subject that I've not really thought into.

i would asume they have more hotlines, but they might not be listed on the sub because i doubt there are many people from japan on reddit.

I might be wrong, because from what i found (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_in_Japan#Cultural_attitude_toward_suicide) suicide is somewhat accepted in japan, so there might also not be that many people calling these hotlines because they think its the right thing to do

Wow, that's pretty interesting. But weird. I'd never of thought anyone would have their views towards suicide like that, but if that's how they live, that's how they live. Thanks for that fact, I'm curious-satisfied now. If you do happen to venture upon more interesting things do respond though. Just wanted to satisfy the curiosity of Japan and other countries in general. Thanks!

Pretty sure the highest rates of suicides are in the extremely northern countries due to the fact they experience way shorter periods of sunlight and longer periods of darkness than the rest of the world - look it up, it's insane how (I think it was these countries) Greenland and Iceland have such insanely high rates of suicide. I believe one of those even has a rate of like 1/5 of the population attempts suicide at some point.
