LET'S FUCKING DO THIS!!!

Hey, /u/theone899 now that we got a sticky, you might want to think about linking to the other two Azure Orb posts you made recently (Heineken and Stetson iirc).

Time for ethics!

Excellent post OP! It's got all the information we need. Writing e-mail now.

Le sigh, I'm at a bit of a conundrum. Y'see, I have a friend that writes for SB-Nation. We play Warhammer 40k and AoS together. He's a great guy, lots of laughs, so on and so forth. I'm apprehensive about getting involved in this one because of that.

On the other hand, despite trying to be civil with each other, I keep hearing overly SJW and radical things come out of his mouth, and the fact that he writes for SB-Nation while keeping these views, makes me distrust SB-Nation entirely.

Such zingers from him include.

"I hate that SJW is used as a perjorative term."

"Gamergate is so full of shit. They just harrass and torment women."

"Just a bunch of neckbeards complaining that a woman has opinions on video games."

"The gaming scene is SO misogynist." ((This one annoys me, because he refuses to ever play with one of the ladies that frequents our local Games Workshop store, despite her being very fun to play the game with.))

"Anyone that supports men's rights are just idiots." ((I'm not an MRA, but I can't stand the hypocrisy. He complains when someone (((Usually me, Cough))) points at Radfems and their insanity, but stereotypes and insults MRAs that do the same thing.))

So, KiA, what do?

Keep in mind that Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly are friends. They disagree on tons of stuff, but they're still friends.

Similarly, Stewart takes the piss out of Fox all the time (and rightfully so). I think that's a similar situation to what you're dealing with here.

It might damage your friendship though. That's something you have to be prepared for. Some people (including those on "your side") are so tightly clung to their ideology that they'll disassociate themselves from people who dare to even criticize them.

"The gaming scene is SO misogynist." ((This one annoys me, because he refuses to ever play with one of the ladies that frequents our local Games Workshop store, despite her being very fun to play the game with.))

Can you explain why? Seems bizarre. Don't tell me it's because he thinks she's not a good player or something. I don't think I could contain my sides.

[–]Kroljas 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

Lol, well, I went to high school with her, so I've known her for a long time. She shows up for games wearing really low cut shirts, and gets overly excited when she wins. ((Which, honestly, is using the assets that she's got, which I'm fine with.))

His main complaint is that she "Cheeses it." by playing the best army at the time when it comes to the current meta. But she's not a tournament player, so it's irrelevant. Our local gaming community has had problems with power gamers and 'Rule Nazis' before, but we've ousted them.

[–]shinsuke_nakamura 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Where is the girl at when I play games?

Seriously though, I can see your friend throwing a handkerchief over her exposed breast line, and asking for the damsel to hold his white plated steel gloved hand.

[–]DariusJustice 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

Just talk to him and pick his brain for a while, see where these views are coming from. As a SB-Nation frequent (Arrowhead Pride) I'd assume he doesn't write for a specific team blog, but rather one of those sucky general sections.

In the end, e-mailing is all up to you.

[–]howieloader 3ポイント4ポイント  (2子コメント)

Dude wtf, I play X-Wing and Star Wars Armada and, aside from my wife who occassionally plays X-Wing, if another chick ever wanted to play that would blow my mind... What is wrong with this guy???

[–]Ravanas 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

Jesus, somebody else still plays X-Wing?? I'm not alone?! I thought I was alone!!

[–]howieloader 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

My LGS has XWing/Armada night every Thursday with good turnout... Wave 7 plus the Raider seems like its reinviggerating people who might've thought it was starting to grow stale... Its still going pretty strong, imo...

Convince your friend to get an irreversible vasectomy. If he is displaying those levels of stupid, we have to start thinking about gene pool at this point.

Once that is done, go home and send your emails.

Redpill them.

Then don't get involved in this one. This isn't GamerGhazi where they shoot you for deserting or something.

"On the other hand, despite trying to be civil with each other, I keep hearing overly SJW and radical things come out of his mouth, and the fact that he writes for SB-Nation while keeping these views, makes me distrust SB-Nation entirely."

Sounds like a tool.

"So, KiA, what do?"

The following is how I would handle this issue, were I in your position. I would make use of my normal communications medium to contact this friend, (if we regularly meet in person, this would be a face-to-face) and I would drop an ultimatum on him.

"So, with all the crazy shit you and your place of work have been saying (proceed to list examples) I'm considering shutting all of you down through a massive email campaign. Give me a reason to show mercy. Actually investigate the people you're slandering and investigate their claims, and then reach your own conclusion. Do that, and regardless of what that conclusion is, I won't participate in the email campaign. Don't, and I will gleefully join in that email campaign."

Then obviously, depending on the answer, I would have made my decision.

Debunk him. Tell him that only a minority of tweets from GG hashtag were harassing whereas those against GG were more harassing/higher in quantity. Point out that GG donated to Fine Young Capitalists and that we raised money for a rape victim.

Point out that there are many minorities/women in GG. Basically, challenge him - ask for proof when he says ''GG harasses women''.

Cross Posted on GGHQ . had to trim the body a little to fit on the board. Hope you dont mind /u/theone899 ?

Lets get to it SeaLions !

I've never read Polygon, are there good examples of them criticizing Japanese developers? I wanted to write an email which was more about Polygon hating Japanese culture (and games!)

Do we keep a list of shitty Polygon articles somewhere, indexed by topic?

Hard to justify a purchase of their watch that is celebrating space exploration when they advertise with companies bullying scientists.

Not living in America, does anyone here know what the practical impact was of the whole "contact Rush Limbaugh's advertisers, tell them you won't buy their products" thing?

It was a while back, and quite a big thing, I recall. Every dropped advertiser made the news aggregator sites I read at the time. Whatever happened with that? Were there permanant changes, or did advertisers pull back, only to resub later?

[–]HariMichaelson 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Rush was damn-near destroyed by that campaign. His reach is much shorter than what it once was. Sure, people still listen to him, but he has been dropped from so many stations it's kind of hilarious.

[–]The_King_of_Pants 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Last time i listened to Rush his ads were all PSAs and dead air.

[–]Calbeck 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think the focus and wording is too "buzzwordy" --- but I just rewrote it to my own specs anyways. I recommend everyone do that... in no case should we be repeating each other anyways, as originality and speaking from the heart have more impact than 5,000 slight variants on the same phraseology.

[–]scionesciam 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I can't participate in this. So I say: Good luck everyone. Let's hope it's effective.

You guys are going to spam advertisers because you're pissed over a half-dozen opinion pieces? Seriously? Sometimes people are going to disagree with you, dudes. Grow up and get over it.

[–]TRPACC 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Thats generally what happens when people write hate propaganda targeting a group to their biological features .

You don't just get over fascists on the rise , the correct thing to do is oppose them .

[–]Teenymcweeny -3ポイント-2ポイント  (4子コメント)

For a group that I thought was in part about campaigning against censorship doesn't it seem strange to petition a company to cut ties with sites because you don't like what they are saying?

[–]theone89944k and /r/Gawker GET[S] 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

It's more than ''I don't like what they are saying'' - a video gaming website calling it's own audience stupid and dead will warrant a response; they violated their responsibility.

[–]Teenymcweeny -1ポイント0ポイント  (1子コメント)

Their responsibility to not state an opinion different from your own? The article that says video games are stupid is actually a fairly positive review of rock band 4 from a person who clearly doesn't like music based video games. It's irresponsible to apply that one persons opinion to an entire website, especially one that I reckon thinks video games are rather important.

[–]theone89944k and /r/Gawker GET[S] 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

No, I was referring to Polygon smearing gamers as dead - insulting one's own audience is just stupid. The fact that advertisers pulled out as a consequence of that is a testament to it.

If you run a website and smear the audience you're writing for, then consumers are within their right to voice complaints. Imagine if a sports website smeared their fans as dumb? The readers would be within their rights to voice complaints.

Voicing a different opinion would be ''I don't like this game because...'' whereas saying ''gamers are dead'' and attacking the audience of the medium you are writing for is a bizzare and asinine thing to do.

If the companies choose to continue to do business with they people that's their own choice, we're not forcing anyone.

We're simply letting them know what their partners stand for.
