If he is anything like me, he needed to get the cat off of him and kitty wasn't cooperating. Trying to drop the kitty in place results in the kitty just clinging onto everything it can reach, loose clothes, skin. So you gently detach the cat and hold him at arms length and now you have a quandary. You could just drop the kitty, but that is like 4 or 5 feet in the air onto a hard surface. So you do what he does, you find somewhere soft and gently pitch the cat onto it.

I tried to gently pitch a puppy once. It bounced off the somewhere soft into the wall.

I'm still traumatized... the puppy however, being a puppy and made of sterner stuff, snorted a little puppy sniff, shook its head, and continued on.
