I understand that it's offensive to some people, but the rate at which we're pretty much erasing history is setting off warning signs.

Oh yeah. In fact, we should be naming more things after leaders of foreign enemies. Slavery schmavery.

If you're not free to leave the Union, you're not free.

Wait do we really have a real, live secessionist here? Wow.

Yah I saw how stupid his other posts were in this thread and looked up his comment history. I'm glad, because otherwise I might have bothered further engaging and that's clearly a waste of time.

I am simply stating a fact, which apparently you cannot refute.
It would be as if you were married to someone and were never allowed to leave them. Would you describe that as being "free?"
Please answer the question.
[–]MasterYogurtCollege Park 5
That's because your bumper sticker argument either commits a logical fallacy or is not really relevant.
Depends on how you define the words "you" and "free", but even being generous the "you" in the premise is necessarily collective (since you as an individual are in fact free to live elsewhere) while the "you" in the conclusion implies the individual.
Thus your argument is:
If you are not permitted to vote to remove your state from the union you yourself are not free.
In this case, you have to explain why the premise leads to the conclusion. Your "fact" is an argument, and your argument is missing a premise.
Until you provide one, you do not have a complete argument.

Ask the Catholic Church that question.

Other people besides Catholics can get married.
haha, what does marriage have to do with freedom?
[–]GoufingAroundWest End 11
Sure you are. A soundbyte doesn't change that. Though I like the revisionist one, much better than the original.

Your "argument" is fallacious.
The States voted to join the Union on an individual basis. They should be able to vote to leave it in the same manner.
Some states tried to leave the Union and they had a bad time.
[–]GoufingAroundWest End 9
A national government isn't one of those hop on-off busses you see at Union Station. Joining the United States cedes sovereign authority to the Federal Government.
Individual citizens are free to immigrate somewhere else. The United States does not give away its territory to foreign nations because of a vote.
In the US case, it certainly ceded some sovereign authority to the federal government while also protecting some of the states' rights to do things. That said, you can't just join a union, expect the benefits, and then say fuck it when you don't get your way.
It's the same argument people make with labor unions. Gather all the benefits, but don't pay a dime for the services and protections and benefits afforded by that association.

I would be willing to be when the citizens of those states voted to join the Union they had no idea they'd never be able to leave.

You seem to live in your own little alternate reality. The people in /r/washingtondc are firmly rooted in this one.

.
The citizens didn't vote to join the Union, their elected representatives did. Hell even Washington was only elected by 10 of the 13 states since 2 weren't part of the Union yet and the NYS legislature fucked things up as usual.
The Union only became the Union once 9 (2/3rds) of the states decided to ratify the Constitution.
As of the 1860 election, there were 33 states. The secessionists had 1/3 of the states wanting to break up the union. Not to mention the pro-Union West Virginians, Kentuckians, and Tennesseans. Under your system of government, if 1/3 of the states want something, the federal government should just give it?
if 1/3 of the states want something, the federal government should just give it?
Part of freedom is the right of free association. If you cannot leave a union you voted to join you are not free.
You have the right to freedom of interference from the government to associate freely with others. That doesn't mean you aren't subject to the rights and responsibilities and practices that such an association brings with it.

Which is exactly why states may want to leave.
From the Bill of Rights:
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people
Except the Bill of Rights came about 3 years after the Constitution was ratified. If the southern states wanted to leave the Union, they should have used the powers and terms set forth in Article V of the actual Constitution..not its amendments.
