Thanks. I'm planning to stand on the embankment and chuck bricks through the windows of the coaches returning from the march. I jest, that was a nice sentiment OP and welcomed.

Aye, have a nice day whoever you are.

Celebrating what? What reason could someone have to wake up today and celebrate? What accomplishments have these people done....? A birthday? A successful few months? Won the lottery?

It's monday morning, we've got work and things to do.

Oh wait, they're 'celebrating' some murders that the Dutch committed in Ireland centuries ago? Suck. My. Balls.

The Dutch? Fucking retarded. Murders? You mean war.

I suppose by your definition in the first paragraph that people ought not celebrate Christmas. Or Easter. Or Chinese New Year. Or New Year. Or Gay Pride.

And it's achieved. Not done.

The Orange Order aka the Dutch.

War aka constant invasions.

Christmas is about peace and love. New year is obvious.

Where to begin on so many inaccuracies and confused terminologies? Think I'll bow out at this point.

Happy 'celebrate the slaughtering of my ancestors and condemn them to another 300 years of oppression' day.

This cannot be spun as an inclusive holiday, no matter how you attempt to dress it up.

EDIT: And can I say 'Happy 12th July' is rich coming from someone who is openly sectarian.

Precisely. Like it or not, if we want to achieve peace in this place, the OO needs to be removed from the picture.

Bands and bonfires would be fine with me without the flag burning and sectarian songs that appear to be present at every single march/fire. I won't be attending, but it would be ok with me. However, I can't see people not being sectarian bastards at any point in the near future.

If the secterian hate organisation (where only 6% of members would be ok with their children marrying a Catholic) that is the OO was to disappear too that would be great.

[–]warp_spazBelfast 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

Should groups really be "removed from the picture" in democracies? I find that a bit mental.

We pretty much have an imperfect peace going on now. Granted it's imperfect. But what fucking state in the world is actually perfect?

No other Western democracy has terrorists in their governments. Anywhere else, these people would be out in a heartbeat. In this backward place, we keep them in power.

They didn't slaughter your ancestors too well if you're still here.

Maybe they got some after they had children. You get the point; I'm not going to celebrate what was essentially the brutal desolation of my culture and people.

Jesus lad lighten up. Thanks for the nice gesture OP

Meh, a nice gesture but a meaningless one; like saying "Happy Easter Rising anniversary" to a unionist.

The 12th and Easter Rising are not the fucking same and don't ever compare them.

And to you, friend!

I celebrate every day of my life. Even yesterday.

Have a great day, whether you're out on the streets or just taking advantage of the bonus bank holiday. The 12th could have the potential to become Northern Ireland's national holiday. Remove the orange, the contentious marches and the symbolism. Reach out to include the nationalist and immigrant communities by doing something other than marching through their streets just to spite them and burning their flags. Make it a neutral celebration that happens in shared spaces that celebrates the good about this wee place - the Celtic history, the Scottish history, the shipbuilding and shirtmaking industries, and the peace process. Have massive street parties like the Fleadh in 2013, get local world-famous singers/bands to perform, have big sporting events across the country like motor-racing and golf tournaments. Make the 12th a celebration of the pride, diversity and welcoming nature of NI.

....or just keep it as an official commemoration of the hatred of non-unionists and keep defending ar kulshur when the rest of the UK (and world) sees it as backwards and embarrassing.

Yes, happy religious hate day everyone! If your energy levels drop, drink some haterade. You'll be hatin' like it's 1690 in no time. If the cops won't let you at the fenians in ardoyne, you know where the mosque and temple are.

Yayyyy Happy living in the past intimidating more than half the population and causing them to live in terror day!

The weather today is too undecisive to head outta town and the marches are not an option. Anyone got any ideas?

reddit, youtube

You're a day late

If you were to go to your local parade and take a survey of how many people there know the history of the Twelfth ... how many could tell you it, and how many would just shout CULTURE in your face?

That's what bothers me the most you know. Can bet your ass not one of those wee twats who'll be throwing bricks at the police later has any idea why today happens!

yeah bloody marvellous , load of toxic waste pumped out into my area last night. Then had the pleasure of drums and flutes warming up from around 5am then at 730am some daft parade around the estate in the rain. is there any need for that? could they not just have a wood fire without tyres and then f off to the big parade without annoying everyone trying to have a lie in? its a disgrace of a day , nothing happy about it

The black smoke coming out of Belvoir last night looked like the Springfield tyre fire (could see it from miles away)

can here them all now on the malone road , would they not be tired of all that druming and whistling carry on? they have been at it since 5am? Now we wait for the busloads of pissed up hangers on roaming the streets later. Cant wait for that , dont think ill bother walking the dog

Watching the bands in Ballymena hi.

Wet and and miserable as per the usual with our weather.

Cheers mate happy 13th to you too

You too mate. Is all a pile of wank which ever side you're from. Or even if you don't really have a side because it's all shite really. To the rest of the world it reinforces our country as the backwater of the UK. Fuck all you loyalists and fuck all you republicans. Everyone is as bad as everyone else. To be fair though, at this time of year, its mainly those protestants, up to no good.

(Sorry, might be in a bad mood. I'm working today for the NHS and this is a busy day full of fucking idiots)

People out on the streets will always deliver a busier day for emergency services. I have respect for the work you do but try not to equate public holidays with 'a pile of wank'.

[–]Philthy_McNastyBelfast 3ポイント4ポイント  (2子コメント)

I dont consider it a public holiday. Its a day for religious extremists, to exercise their right to assembly. A dark day on the calender, one that makes civilized members of society cringe.

And one in which the 'civilised members of society' sit on their computers and moan all day. I'm not a religious extremist and yet I was able to enjoy a parade earlier.

[–]Philthy_McNastyBelfast -1ポイント0ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'm sure you did.

Oh I don't, I think public holidays are a good thing. If i'm off the rota and work I get double time, it's great. I just don't think this should be one until we can learn how to stop wrecking the place every july. Belfast would be a nice place if it wasn't on fire all summer.

Edit: and a large portion of the work emergency services get today will be because people are stupid.

Haven't seen anyone wreck the place yet. In fairness the only violence this side of the 12th has been Republican attacks. The out of control bonfire in east Belfast was the stand out instance of effective loyalist paramilitary intimidation on 11th night this time round.

That doesn't add up to the place in flames. People out on the street = always gonna have daft things happening. It's the public we're talking about.

That's a crazy statement to make. I used to live in the East and it was absolutely mad. Most people were afraid to go out at night because of the scumbags throwing bottles and bricks at the police up the road. Both sides can be as bad as each other but it's definitely the loyalists who are worse at this time of year.

And large groups of people are usually able to congregate without it devolving into petrol bombs.

Its not like we live in a war zone but it can get pretty rioty in the summer. To pretend otherwise is ridiculous.

Traditions are only traditions because we keep doing them. I'd say that politically I fall on the unionist side of thing but if it were up to me there would be no parades because people can't behave themselves. It's a relatively small group of people but when you need to have most of your police force on stand by, there's definitely a problem.

Well from the comments in this thread it's quite clear the unionists are out celebrating while the bitter nationalists are in here moaning.

The largest open-air festival in Ireland, with hundreds of bands, dozens of locations and tens of thousands of spectators, and all for free! You could go and watch and enjoy excellently turned-out pipe, brass and flute bands playing tunes familiar to both sides, enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere, appreciate the incredible rhythms of the lambegmen, or you could sit on your computer all day cultivating your crop of strawmen, and getting angry and bitter about imagined "hatefests"!
