[–]Gunlord500 2ポイント3ポイント  (4子コメント)

First again!

...Or, maybe not. :p

Here's a quandary that's been bugging me for a little while. I fear I may have committed some badhistory (or bad geopolitics, but I'll get to that later) myself, but I'm not sure. This didn't happen on Reddit, though, and I thought it would be in bad taste to make a whole thread dedicated to the matter. Thus, I thought our latest 'Mindless Monday' would be appropriate, at least looking at the lax rules for these threads, though of course, mods, please feel free to delete this if it’s troublesome. I was having a conversation with an acquaintance over the subject of the American Civil War, and he brought up an argument I had honestly never heard before. To summarize (hopefully without doing injustice to what he said), it went something like this:

“Slavery wasn’t worth fighting for at all, but here’s something Northerners don’t think of very much: If the Civil War was justified to “end slavery,” why isn’t any American intervention justified if the reason is “good enough?” Should we invade Nigeria to stop Boko Haram (our girls haven’t been brought back yet!) You’d probably say no. But when it comes to Southerners, who you Northerners keep saying are worthless embarrassments the US would be better off without, you still can’t let them leave. So how can you justify intervention to stop slavery but not to stop terrorism or misogyny or whatever? It seems like you just have it out for Southerners specifically.”

Like I said, I hadn’t heard this argument before, and I had to admit he had a point. It’s easy to get on board with a war against slavery, but it’s also easy to get on board with wars against terrorism or maltreatment of women or a lot of other ills, and it’s something to be careful of. Still, upon considering it, I ended up thinking that the North would still have been particularly justified in attempting to subdue the South. Here’s what I replied:

“True, but think of what would have happened if we’d just let the South secede. Pretty much all the seeds of conflict would still be there. Slaves would still try to flee from the South, leading to a lot of acrimony between the old nation and the new one. The South was also pretty aggressive and expansionist; look at the Mexican-American war. It’s likely a separate Confederacy and Union would have come to blows later on even with a peaceful secession. Southerners might be annoy us Northerners inside our Union, but they’d be outright dangerous outside of it. That's why you couldn't justify other forms of intervention through this reasoning, by the way--as bad as organizations like Boko Haram may be, they're far away across the ocean instead of right next to us like an independent Confederacy would have been.”

I don’t want a brigade or a personal army or anything like that (that’s why I’m being vague about who I was talking with and where), but I would be interested in hearing from folks who know more about the geopolitical/strategic setting of mid 19th century America than I do. This was just an off the cuff conversation, so I probably didn’t hew to Rule 5 as much as I could have or should have, but I’m wondering, was my reasoning completely off? If Lincoln had just let the South peacefully secede (I know, he wouldn’t have), would a large conflict (or series of conflicts) between the US and the Confederacy be likely in the future, or was my assessment too pessimistic? (This is a ‘what if’ question too, which is another reason I took it to a Mindless Monday thread rather than, say, an askhistorians thread. :p )

[–]The740Feminists hired Christians to put lead in the Roman water supply 3ポイント4ポイント  (1子コメント)

Pretty much all the seeds of conflict would still be there. Slaves would still try to flee from the South, leading to a lot of acrimony between the old nation and the new one.

I think this is fairly close to it. I figure one of the following two scenarios would have played out. First, assume a peaceful split and no shots fired at Fort Sumter.

In the first scenario, the USA dismantles any type of fugitive slave laws. Maryland's slaveholding farmers are compensated to emancipate, effectively ending slavery in the USA. This causes a crush of fleeing slaves coming north. In response, the CSA does one of two stupid things (possibly both): either cracking down significantly on slaves themselves, or actually attempting to do something about the USA's refusal to repatriate slaves by claiming that slave movements are actually being encouraged if not caused by "Yankee agitators".

So we'd be looking at either widespread slave uprisings or outright war between the two sides in this case.

The other possible scenario would involve a completely hands-off policy from the USA toward the CSA for one reason or another. Even if left completely alone with no slave movements or uprisings, slavery couldn't have lasted because the soil couldn't have lasted. Cotton is extremely damaging to soil, meaning that as time goes on, it's necessary to either let fields lie fallow (which means having slaves is pointless), plant something else to replenish soil nutrients (which means having slaves is pointless since there's basically nothing as labor-intensive as cotton), or else expand territory (which would be pointless as well, since west of Texas can't grow cotton anyway). And even if there was a massive migration of cotton planters into Texas, it would leave behind nothing but a bunch of poor and extremely angry farmers with no real prospect for the future, meaning that a bunch of the CSA may well have been re-absorbed into the USA.

But that's just how I see it.

[–]Gunlord500 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah, I was pretty sure the issue of runaway slaves would be really really troublesome even for a "peacefully seceded" confederacy too.

[–]taylororo 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

The Boko Haram analogy has some problems. In the ACW, it was an attempt to restore sovereignty against another government, whereas in Boko Haram is trying to suppress a non-state actor. If anything, Boko Haram is more like the explosion of white supremacist violence during reconstruction. This was the war that the federal government decidedly did not prosecute to the fullest extent.

So tell you friend he got what he wanted! No war and the victory of white supremacy through the constant violence against black bodies!

If the Civil War was justified to “end slavery,” why isn’t any American intervention justified if the reason is “good enough?” Should we invade Nigeria to stop Boko Haram (our girls haven’t been brought back yet!)

There's an idea in Just War Theory called "probability of success". Before, and obviously after the American civil war, the success was clearly known to be possible. On the other hand, if we've learned anything in the past 15 years, it's that we are not very good at defeating non-state actors. Our probability of success is low in Nigeria or wherever. Just because one good cause may be justified, doesn't mean that every good cause justifies war.

His position only makes sense if you believe that there is one criteria (humanitarian intervention/right intention) for the basis of war.

[–]turtleeatingaldermanAcademo-Fascist 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Thus, I thought our latest 'Mindless Monday' would be appropriate, at least looking at the lax rules for these threads, though of course, mods, please feel free to delete this if it’s troublesome.

There's no problem. This is the best place for it. We discourage and often remove individual posts asking if something is bad history, given our rule 5.

Should we invade Nigeria to stop Boko Haram (our girls haven’t been brought back yet!) You’d probably say no.

If Boko Haram were acting in the capacity of the Nigerian state or with approval from the Nigerian state and directly attacked the U.S., I'd say there'd be strong grounds for military action. Not that I think an invasion would be the best course of action, which only brings me to my next distinction—Nigeria is not sovereign U.S. soil, meaning the hypothetical isn't comparable to the ACW.

So how can you justify intervention to stop slavery but not to stop terrorism or misogyny or whatever? It seems like you just have it out for Southerners specifically.

The problem here is pretty simple. For one, they appear to be confused about what the Union cause for 'intervention' was, which was not initially to stop or even take action against slavery. It was to suppress an active domestic insurrection, led by a self-declared sovereign state's government, after an attack on what was U.S. sovereign ground regardless of the legitimacy of that declared state. The initial part of the war was officially conducted to restore federal authority in states that had taken to rebelling against it, and which had initiated violence.

Your counterargument is pretty solid, at least as much as dealing with this sort of counterfactual history can be. The only thing I'd add is that the justification Unionists used at the time often included the idea that the dissolution of the Union was a destruction of the country itself, and represented a failure of what was essentially an experiment in democratic republicanism. Many further argued that it set a very bad precedent, which in turn would weaken if not destroy the viability of republican government.

Last week I got confused on which day was which and posted in the Thursday thread on Friday. So I'm reposting.

So, I'll admit that I haven't even searched through the sub's history to see if this has been discussed, but earlier this week I ran across an article on io9 discussing John Boswell's book Same-Sex Unions in Pre-Modern Europe and I was just wondering if there was a scholarly (or unscholarly) consensus on the book (and him, his research, or whatever). I seem to remember some users in /r/AskHistorians poopooing the comparison of whatever kind of relationships these were with our modern concepts of homosexuality, marriage, etc but I couldn't find it and decided to see what everyone here thinks.

Some notes:

  • The article uses the term Dark Ages. A commenter tries to point out that not only is that crap terminology, but that 100 AD wouldn't even be included in the supposed Dark Ages. The author rebuts and doubles down.
  • The article was posted in 2013, so I'm not really sure how I even found it. I deffinitely wasn't thinking, "What does the place I read True Blood recaps and Joss Whedon listicles have to say about marriage in the Roman world as it relates to today's politics?"

Also, grad school is going swimmingly. And by swimmingly, I mean that I feel like I'm submerged in water and I'm flailing about helplessly. Haha. No, it's ok. I'm happy with my life choices, I mean it.

[–]turtleeatingaldermanAcademo-Fascist 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

AskHistorians and AskScience would probably be among the most affected, but the problems don't end there. It would make enforcement of rules mandating civil behavior and against stuff like political soapboxing and history denial in /r/history as well as here extremely difficult, to the point that I would probably just give up moderating. I don't want any part in a sub that hosts defenses of things like racism or Holocaust denial, among many other toxic items. Honestly, those subs are pretty much the only reason I even come to reddit, so I'd probably quit using the website altogether if what /u/spez initially proposed ever came to see the light of day. I know a lot of moderators feel the same way, and I believe he did at the very least give some vague reassurance on some of it when he came to talk to the default mods. I'm not to worried (and not because of his reassurances), as I doubt anything like what he proposed will ever see the light of day. It's just kind of frustrating that, after all the nonsense about Pao not understanding the fundamentals of how reddit works, a new CEO comes in and proposes some ideas that would make having a dedicated, enjoyable community practically impossible.

Still in the glorious PRC. VPN access through the Great Firewall is irregular and often blocked at various points of the day, but Reddit is still safe for now.

Gotten further into Court of the Red Tsar, which I thought was fitting reading in the PRC. The book goes with a bit of an unusual approach: it focuses a lot on Stalin's domestic life, as opposed to just being a broad, general history. The author in the preface goes on a bit about how "demonizing" figures like Hitler and Stalin makes them seem anomalies and inhuman monsters of sorts, allowing us to distance ourselves from them. I have to say that I'm starting to see the wisdom of his approach and his comments, though. Sure, the first few pages depict a lot of interesting and I guess positive features of Stalin's personality, but those only make him seem more monstrous he executes more and more of his old and closest friends. The fact that Stalin was capable of emotions like love and empathy and that he enjoyed literature and comic films, in my opinion, humanizes him, and in doing so makes him all the more of a human monster: someone with alarming similarities to many of us that makes us pause a bit for thought.

The college admissions game is stressing me out even more. Ironically, as more and more successful test scores started coming back, I felt like the pressure and the stakes were getting raised on me even more. Before this year I would have been fine going to UW(in-state) or something, but now I feel obligated to aim higher than that, and consequently I have a lot more worrying to do.

Apart from getting more headaches, I'd a lovely weekend. Finally started reading the Peloponnesian War by Kagan, and it's great. Not too academic (for that he has three other books about the war), but also not too light. And it has tons of maps! For someone who hates to constantly have to leaf back and forth through a book to figure out where something is, it's a blessing. This is a writer who understands me.

It's also heritage month in Dublin, so we visited a large Georgian house on Sunday where the tour guide obviously had just started working there since she knew hardly anything about the use of items in the house, apart from the ones she had on her cheat sheet. She didn't point out any of the interesting bits in the house that were obvious to the two of us. Since we love visiting great houses, we know quite a bit about the things inside, so it felt a bit like we would be better off getting a sheet about the history and then make our own way. There were some on-the-cheap short-cuts taken to "update" the house to the Victorian style (painted wood-effect on white, modified fireplaces), and we spotted at least a couple of Edwardian mods that she totally ignored.

Still, we had a good time and the tour took its time going through the house, so we weren't rushed from room to room like in some other houses.

Finally started reading the Peloponnesian War by Kagan, and it's great. Not too academic (for that he has three other books about the war), but also not too light.

Just a word of warning, I recently finished Jeanne Morefield's Empires without Imperialism and the author sharply criticises Kagan and his work on the Peloponnesian War. According to Morefield - and I can't independently comment on this - Kagan is guilty of projecting modern democratic (ie US) ideals onto Athenian society. Thus, using Thucydides to make his own political points.

Again, I can't comment on the validity of these claims, and Kagan's work is widely read, but just a watch-out.

Can one of the flaired users give a read to this article on modern Islam and the European wars of religion? The whole premise seems bad, and the article seems rife with bad history, but I don't feel like I know enough to refute any of it. Just to give you an idea...

What they forget is that Islamism is not only Islamic but also an “ism”—an ideology and a plan for ordering common life that should be analyzed alongside other ideologies. No part of the world has generated as many isms as the West itself, and so to aid clear thinking about the contemporary Middle East, it is useful to look back at the West’s own history of ideological strife.
