Yeah, except getting accepted into college/ med school is so much easier as a minority that isn't Asian.

I think the counterargument would be that part of getting to the level where you are even thinking about college/med school is much, much more likely when you have people in your life encouraging you and showing you the way to get to college.

So for example, you're a smart kid with loads of potential but maybe you fucked around in school because that's what everybody did and zero or few parents/mentors were there to show you the way.

Too often we think of equal opportunity as being simply a matter of whether or not some organization would want you assuming you are qualified. But equal opportunity also has to refer to equality of opportunities and advantages at every step of your life. This part is tricky because it's not like we can advocate for taking away opportunities from some people in order to make things equal. But we have to at the very least be aware that people in upper classes or with connections have major advantages that have nothing to do with whether or not their race or socioeconomic status has advantages only at the level of admittance.

That's bullshit. You're oversimplifying a complex situation to the point where you're no longer adding anything to the conversation.

I blame the heavy emphasis on sports in admissions. You know Ivies used to consider sports and leadership heavily because they felt it weeded out Jews?

Yeah, same here, it sucks. It's like you tell an interviewer or write in an essay that you want to go into medicine and they're like, "Oh, an overachieving Asian with no personality who wants to be a doctor? There aren't a million of those here already."

Said this the last time it was posted and people bitched, legal institutional racism isn't some ancient thing. A barber in his sixties easily could have faced discrimination getting into med school. Brown v. Board of Education was ruled on in 1954. That was by no means the end of segregation as the battle went on across much of the country into the 70's. If you really think nobody is around that was directly affected by racism, you are ignorant as fuck.

ITT: Angry white people who don't understand the joke

Edit: sorry to be a buzzkill, but I'll explain how institutional racism makes sense in this. The joke is that he's gifted making precise cuts like a surgeon. That's a god given gift. The institutional part is about how he probably never got that opportunity because from elementary to hs graduation, he was oppressed by the system with worse educational opportunities, worse teachers, fewer resources, etc. So yeah, maybe if he got to that point where he was applying to med school he might've gotten in, but that's not the case because he never got the chance to use that talent. But thanks guys for being pretty ignorant about the joke. I also would like to apologize for killing the joke

As an educator I firmly believe the home life and parental support have a lot more to do with it than the educational experience (yes, I realize mom/dad having to work two jobs as a result of a cyclical pattern make this happen). When parents make education a priority over everything else, you'd be surprised to see how just about any student can excel.

When parents make education a priority over everything else

Careful, as an educator you have surely seen helicopter parents (like one of mine) who take this too far. Bad parenting comes from many backgrounds. It was difficult to hear "your parents care so much!" at school and have my self-worth tied to my grades at home--but even that would have been fine if they had actually prioritized my education. They didn't, neither of them had been to college so they didn't even know what that meant.

Caring isn't enough, it has to be genuine and it has to be informed.

I agree on the informed. For me, "education" means so much more than just school. Everything I do with my 4-year old I try to make him curious about how the world works. Now, I didn't grow up with a dad, but I'm blessed to be married to a kindergarten teacher that taught me that simple play with our son can stimulate his brain and grow his curiosity.

How could this comment be down voted? It seems choices and accountability are no longer factors in peoples lives no days.

Because people who didn't excel academically want to believe that it's solely the system's fault.

Yeah but we can't make bad parents not have kids so what are we as a society supposed to do to make things better?

I don't get what they're doing on BPT tbh, besides laughing at black people and immediately getting mad as soon as racism is brought up. It's a real issue and even though " everyone's black here " they keep yelling and crying

Son this is the internet the only websites that are 100% black are Tyler Perry fan pages

That applies to all poor people, not just poor blacks.

Awesome explanation bud. I agree. I attended high school in the south side of Chicago and a lack of educational resources does contribute to the low number of minorities in higher education.

That's because the parents in those households emphasize education much more than households here in the U.S.

Take a trip to some shit village in China and see the classes there, no electronics, no bathrooms, class sizes of 50, no "resources", a thousand times worse than your Chicago hs yet a thousand times more hard work put in by the students.

[–]yung_swagged_out_mf 3ポイント4ポイント  (1子コメント)

how tf you know how hard kids in rural chinese villages work at school lol?

Seriously fuck you. You want people to eat up your RACE excuses while you crack RACIST jokes about others? What type of shit is that you shameless fuck. Go ahead spout your race excuses and racist jokes to make yourself feel better while you wonder why the fuck you're going nowhere in life.

from elementary to hs graduation, he was oppressed by the system with worse educational opportunities, worse teachers, fewer resources, etc.

Getting less is not oppression. If it can still be done with less, it is definitely not oppression. To act like it that is the case entitlement. All you're doing is making excuses for underachievers.

... Just throwing it out there... "institutional racism" is actually against white people.

If you are black and going to med school, they are going to accept your ass because you aren't the 1,000,000,000th white male trying to go through.

It's all about diversifying now and not seeming racist. So if you are a person of any color but white, you have a better chance.

Yall can have lower entry scores to any medical school and yet it's still someone else's fault?

Edit* Nobody here can handle the truth. Im calling it as I saw it. Consider your values before silencing criticism, the real world isn't an echo chamber.

Keep in mind that it's lower entry marks because all other aspects of the educational system is kinda stack up against the minorities. It's to help compensate it

Stacked up against minorities is false, stacked against poor people is true. Saying white people can't be poor is just as fucked up as saying minorities can't be rich.

It's easy to focus on school when you don't have to worry about getting mugged on your way home from school. It's easy to focus when you don't have to pay for your tuition by working full time. It's easy to focus when your parents provide with money, transportation and anything else you need.

None of those issues are exclusive to being black, or any race.

Do you know how many college kids work full time to pay for tuition? I'm one of them. Bought a car on my own with money from my full time job. Pay all my bills. I work 10 hrs a day then go to class right after. It's hard, but with enough determination and will power you can do anything you strive for if you want I bad enough. Community colleges aren't hard to get into or too expensive. You start there and get your associates, earn a good gpa and transfer to another in state college and earn your bachelors if that's what your striving for. Online college is another good choice. It's not impossible. It's just hard work.

Terrible joke is terrible.

Yea but you have to study for that

The real joke here is that OP found a way to play the race card by claiming educational institutions are racist against blacks. In reality, colleges and med schools will bend over backwards to lower their requirements to get minorities into school. Guy below commented blacks are "oppressed by the system with worse educational opportunities." No, they are oppressed by their own culture that belittles the necessity of education, and by their parents who either don't make their children's education a priority in their lives, or aren't there for them at all. Could've easily said "Lines so good he could've been a surgeon." But now it's a common part of black culture to offhandedly claim racism is the reason for any misfortune in their lives. You know what the result of this is? People now just roll their eyes when others cry racism, because the vast majority of the time it's unfounded, which is a shame because real racism is a serious issue.

Am I the only one who thinks med school is the absolute last place that should do admissions like this? I sort of want the best of the best to be my doctor.

[–]Xrathe 2

It's not just educational institutions as the workplace will also advance African American candidates as well thanks to affirmative action. A majority of people would call you racist for what you just posted, but at the risk of showing my white-ness on this subredit I'm going to upvote you anyway.

It always comes down to parents need to instill the value of education and hard work on the children to affect a positive change, which is hard to do when you fail to see those as positive traits to have as a person.

I suppose "institutional racism" is quite the trigger for some people, because its not racism its classism. I'm white and I totally acknowledge its existence. I have a four year degree, 3 years of grad school, and now nursing school (community college program, I have 1 year remaining) under my belt. From all that I only have $30k remaining from student debt. If I hadn't had help from my family it would be well over $100k. The black AND white people who are poorer than my family at my work all say the same thing: "I did a semester/couple semesters/couple years of college and dropped out cause I was afraid of going into further debt." On the flip side poorer white girl actually graduated... with $96k in debt from Penn State. Bottom line: you need a lot of money for college, and some families can supply a portion of that money for their children, some can't. Institutional racism is incorrect though, it should read "classism"

Normal white dude here. that is one bitchin cut.

But... blacks are accepted to med schools at higher rates than whites...

Now a days racism is not much of a factor to attend and excel in school. Race comes into the equation after you get that degree. A minority is less likely to get picked for a job while having the same qualifications as a white person.

Fun fact: On average a high school educated white male earns as much as a college educated black man.
