I don't know that this will actually mess up the cat. My cats (when they were younger) would stalk each other and scare the crap out of each other. I think if you get your cat to where it hides under furniture all the time you've obviously gone too far. The OP's image seems harmless as long as he isn't do that shit to his cat nonstop everyday.

They will practice fleeing when they are kittens whether you scare them or a random noise startles them. I actually think if you're involved in your cat playing predator and prey, they'll learn that every time they get startled there's actually nothing to be afraid of, and they'll become less skittish and more curious (and hence more intelligent). Obviously the same rules don't apply to all cats but the ones I've had were friendly/smart and not easily startled.

We just manhandled the shit out of our cats when they were kittens. They grew up to be lazy fucks with the patience of saints, as they'd been totally desensitized to human contact.

I'm the same, but with one difference. When my cat is sleeping if you poke her, it freaks her out and she make the world's cutest little sound. She doesn't really seem to care after a second though, and goes back to sleep.
