I've tried drawing my characters but they never came out right. Then I tried putting elements together in Photoshop but I don't have those skills either. Then today I tried making some minis out of black card stock and I think I found my artistic side. For these silhouettes of my current party I found images that I like online, printed them and cut them out of the black card stock with a hobby knife. I technically stole the shape of them from the internet but I plan on making some originals in the near future.

I'm an artist, quite good too, and I still have characters not come out quite right. I've been drawing for about 30 years, and most of it was spent doing characters that never looked right. People are hard to get right, but this isn't your artistic side. This is giving up on what's hard and picking something easy. Copying images from the internet and cutting out the silhouettes, while neat looking when given different treatments, a lacking ability to draw characters will still end in poor looking character silhouettes. You can't draw great silhouettes without being able to draw characters well.

That being said, I'm not saying this to be a dick. Instead of making this your new "thing," draw. Draw characters. Figure out what you're doing wrong, and find a reference. Draw that reference. Then find other angles of that shit, draw the fuck out of it. Draw muscle groups and skeletons. Draw characters you love, pay attention to their details. You'll get there, it just takes time and effort. Most of my artistic growth came in the last 10-15 years, most of which in the last 8 or so when I really started looking at my failings and pushing myself to improve on them.

Don't take an easy way out, because you'll find at some point that something is missing.

I apologize for being unclear with my post. This is a "look at this nifty thing" post not a "poor me I'm too lazy to draw" thing. It might be that I'm stuck at a car dealership for the past three hours but your comment rubbed me the wrong way. I'm not interested in becoming an artist in the slightest. I'm a scientist and I'm happy with my dumb little cutouts. Drawing may be the pinnacle of achievement for you but I have other priorities. Thank you for your input into the wonderful world of doing hard things. I'll remind myself of it everyday on my way to my full time job where I work on my graduate studies on my breaks or while I'm spending time with my wife and son.

Serves me right for thinking my shit was worth posting.

Fuck man. I was just... You totally took me wrong. I didn't mean to come off the way you're reacting. Most people are really hard on themselves when they're budding into the world of drawing and take the easy way out into doing something else for a while. I've been there, I know that, and when I thought I saw it, I was giving advice to help someone I thought was looking to be a better artist.

I'm sorry I offended you, but there's no reason for you react the way you did, with pretty much everything after "drawing may be the pinnacle of achievement for you..." being rude and insinuating you know anything about me. I'm an artist by hobby, with a few big name freelance projects under my belt. I'm married and web developer by profession. I've already done the grad school thing too. So if you think you're somehow better than me because I'm serious about being a better artist, you're not, so don't puff yourself up like you are.

The more I read your comment the more I want to just say terrible things to you, but I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're in a bad mood and my comment was aimed at a completely different audience than I expected.

And further more, there's nothing wrong with posting your "shit." Don't be so dramatic.

Now that I've had some time to cool off I apologize for my earlier irritation. We don't know each other and I have the utmost respect for your passion and commitment. I completely understand the need for a creative outlet and am sure that drawing has been that for you. Thank you for your time and comments and your patience with me.

I really appreciate your reply. That being said, keep on doing whatever makes your free time fun. Thanks, I'm glad we could see this through rather than assume each other is an asshole. :) Hope your weekend goes better than whatever kept you at a car dealership.

They look like secret characters I have yet to unlock. Positively artsy.

8/10, would grind Arcade mode to unlock
