Does that image look incredibly fake to anyone else?

I mean, seriously, this is either the result of someone's first-ever attempt at using Photoshop (during which they discovered the "Noise" filter), or else reality has seriously lowered its quality since I last saw a billboard.

"Richmond graphic designer Doug Dobey created the one above. 'It kind of speaks for itself,' he tells Style. 'I don’t think that I need to say much more on it.'"

Not a real image.

Not a very good graphic designer, either.

Live near Richmond. Can confirm doesn't exist.

I live in the very town of Chester, the flag sits just south of the I95 route 10 exit, I can also confirm this sign doesnt exist. the flag in question.

Must be on private property?

yep. I believe there is a trailer park just over the hill (is serious)

[–]rumple_fore_skin 7ポイント8ポイント  (4子コメント)

Why is OP getting downvoted for providing a source?

Do we dislike OP for posting something and trying to pass it off as real life knowing that it was a graphic designer that edited the sign, or do we not think the source is valid?

Edit: needed to include additional question

While I didn't downvote the original poster, I think I can probably understand why others might.

In short, the series of events went as follows:

  1. The original poster offered the image in question.
  2. I questioned the image's legitimacy.
  3. /u/Jumbo_Damn_Pride offered evidence that the image was, in fact, a (bad) digital mock-up.
  4. The original poster responded to that evidence with a second link.
  5. I replied by citing a quote from that second link.

Seen from a third-party perspective, this sequence could make it seem like the original poster was refuting /u/Jumbo_Damn_Pride's evidence. That, combined with the quote that I pulled from the (apparent) rebuttal, might give the original poster the appearance of being intentionally obstinate about the whole thing (given that it would look like they didn't read their own source).

I'm not saying that's definitely what's going on, of course, but it's the best explanation that I can offer. I hope it answers your question, at any rate!

[–]rumple_fore_skin 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

That actually makes sense. Thanks for your thought out and thorough reply. I was hoping I wouldn't get the classic "OP Is a bundle of sticks" reply.

Haha. That's what happened. Thanks for spelling it out.

My pleasure! I'm of the mind that folks should only downvote in rare instances, but I've seen enough of it to get a feel for how it comes about.

Anyway, it looks like your link is in the positive numbers now, so clearly cooler heads won out!

I'm from Richmond and it hasn't come to my attention so I'm going with fake.

Maybe a filter in instagram?

I've yet to see an Instagram filter that includes rasterizing artifacts in lines (like on the arrow) and offsets the angle of the text so that it doesn't actually match with the billboard.

I'm calling shenanigans.

Yes and the flag is upside down.

It looks like one of those fake UFO pictures that someone concocted on Photoshop.

I have no idea if its real or not, but that is not what photoshop's noise filter looks like.

If not, it's pretty damned close.

Here's an example image, which I grabbed at random from Imgur.

Here it is with the Noise filter applied at 3%.

Compare the sky and the light areas to those in the original picture.

Yeah I mean its similar, but Im still 99% sure thats not what it is. The textures just look completely different. The billboard one looks much more splotchy than grainy Id say.

Why was this flag acceptable 3 weeks ago but now it's treated like a swastika? I'm British I don't get it.

[–]Nerapa 8

I'll try not to inject any opinion here one way or the other:

A vocally-racist white guy went to a church and killed a bunch of black people. Now the idea that the flag is associated with racism is becoming more mainstream down in the south.

Some people feel that the flag is a symbol of southern pride, others feel that it represents the systematic racism in the history of the south.

This recent incident sparked people to align with the idea that the flag is used too often as a symbol of racist, and not just southern, pride. Thus the ban.

Thanks, seems like an odd reaction in my opinion, is it actually banned? What about things like Dukes of Hazard that have it in?

TV Land has removed all episodes of the show, which is embarrassingly stupid.

It's only stupid if you aren't trying to destroy white American culture.

From public buildings. Not for private use.

TV Land actually pulled Dukes of Hazard recently. If you ask me, this has all gotten way out of hand. I can understand why someone would feel uncomfortable about seeing the confederate battle flag displayed on public property. But there's something very silly about people taking offense to the Dukes of Hazard or civil war themed video games.

Because the kid who murdered 9 people in a church happened to be holding one in a picture on some social media page, and he was white and from the South. That means that no one is allowed to think that that flag stands for anything other than slavery. Which is bullshit.

Because for the general populace of America, political correctness and safety are now far more important than freedom.

It's never been widely acceptable in the U.S. The South has been pretty into it, but people from most other states have always found their attachment to it, at best, mildly embarrassing. There's been plenty of local debates about the confederate flag, but those are typically handled within communities.

Just now the whole church murder thing has brought it to a more national light and now everyone's extremely polarized about it. So the people who were originally mildly embarrassed by the whole nonsense are now pretty angry that some people are still clinging to the damned thing.

So it's OK to use some racial slurs?

Only against white people.

Yeah it's really ridiculous. I was watching South Park last night, that flag episode, and Chef said "cracker ass" or something. Then a Key and Peele commercial came on and they said "white bitches". I can't help but think how fast a show about two white comedians who said "black bitches" would be cancelled.

I agree that there is a problem with that. Using derogatory terms for anyone because of race only promotes racism. While a black person calling a white person derogatory names doesn't hold the same negative connotations as a white person using derogatory terms in regards to a black person, it is extremely hypocritical. If we all want to be equal than really we should try to see any derogatory comment based on race (or anything else for that matter) as ethically wrong, even if it's a black person calling a white person names.

we should try to see any derogatory comment based on race (or anything else for that matter) as ethically wrong, even if it's a black person calling a white person names.

Or just let it be a joke both ways.. either way - same rules should apply.

I agree. Its an all or nothing kind of thing and I'm fine with it being nothing

I mean south park isn't the best example, they make fun of every race at one point or another, and use every slur in the book.

You're complaining about "Cracker ass" on South Park? Have you seen all the caricatures of Asians and jew jokes on that show? Lol

yah but...lets be clear here. The only thing wrong with this billboard is the use of cracker.

I'ts okay to use to all of them.

Yes. Anybody who is offended by the word "cracker" needs to put on their big boy/big girl pants and get over it.

I can't figure out where the term honky came from, does anyone know? (Or have an interesting theory)

Yes I looked at Wikipedia

[–]probably_not_serious 4ポイント5ポイント  (3子コメント)

I know. I'm really sick of all this discrimination against white people.

A month ago, I would see exactly 0 confederate flags out driving around in any given week. Today alone, I saw 3 flying high in the back of pickup trucks. I live in north Georgia

I live in st louis and if you go outside of the city, the stars and bars are everywhere. Never see them sporting in the city tho..

I live near PTC...some kid had it flying on the back of his golf cart lol

Well what if a white person put up the billboard? And let's be honest, does anyone really get offended by being called cracker? IMO its one of the weakest insults out there. Also, I am as white as a rice in a glass of milk on a paper plate in a snow storm, if that matters.

It's not really offensive because they are just sounds, but getting called any word that lumps you in to a group because of some sort of perceived weakness is pretty upsetting.

Yeah, but that's what I am getting at. What derogatory meaning does cracker convey? It sounds like an insult from a G movie.

I remember hearing that "cracker" was derived from cracking a whip AKA racist slave owner. Which is pretty inappropriate to call some one..

Wow, I have apparently internalized the XKCD thing as I read that as "backwards ass-crackers".

No, you can only use fake ones

Cracker wasn't originally a racial slur for white people, it was a rough synonym for "white trash" and still gets used that way in some parts of the country. But that's less common than the prevailing meaning of "white person" and would definitely be confusing if you aren't used to the connotation that is almost certainly being used here. Replace the use of the word "cracker" here with "redneck" or "hillbilly" and you'll get something much closer to what the sign is (presumably) trying to convey.

Cracker wasn't originally derogatory at all. In Florida it still isn't a negative term unless you just don't know what it means. See Florida Cracker

What's an ass cracker?

It's right behind the nutcracker

It's rekcarc ssa backwards.

I still don't get it.

So it's ok to say "cracker?" I don't like it.

What better way to express your hatred towards white people than to market it on a billboard.

So southern pride is bad bad but its okay to use racial slurs? Nice logic.

I would be really sad for humanity if this was real and not fake.

Minority pride is okay but no one else can have any

What if you're a white minority?

Then you're guilty for the crimes of all white people...ever...forever.

aren't blacks and whites in america about 50-50% by now? I think i heard that somewhere, that the new generation of kids are the same amount black and white.

Sorry, but that's not even close. As per the 2010 census, white people make up ~63.7% of the population, black people being ~12.2%. Hispanic people are actually the second largest, at about 16.4%.

White and all other races are getting close to 50-50, but not under any other distribution.

I'd be surprised. Last I heard it was 14%

It's photoshopped

Yeah I know.
Did you not read my comment?

Southern pride is fine.

It's the symbol of systematic humiliation of minorities that's the problem.

The Confederacy was all about slavery.

Many of the Southern States only started incorporating the Confederate Battle Flag into their state flags in the 20th century, as a defiant stand against racial integration

I am sad for humanity that Southerners can't seem to find a symbol of pride that doesn't represent one of the darkest moments in their history. I have a friend who flew in the Luftwaffe, was captured by the Allies, and spent the rest of WWII in a prison camp in Scotland, where he was nearly starved. I can assure you, he would not approve of the Swastika being flown over his grave when he's gone.

The idea of the Confederate flag as synonymous with Southern pride is part of the problem.

Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks were southerners. Does the Confederate flag celebrate them?

Why have we let a domestic terrorist define what this symbol means?

I find this whole ban the flag thing to honestly be ridiculous. Do we ban religion when an extremist terrorist nut waves that banner all over during his rampage? This is just ridiculous.

the most offensive thing about this pic is the terrible photoshop and how many ppl are upvoting this thinking it is authentic.

Lets pretend to not be racist by being racist....fuck this world and the ignorant PC police fucks that are destroying it...

you dont like people who are overly pc, but the word cracker offends you? Doesnt that make you the pc one?

Whatever. Stupid photoshopped in a flag and some words. The flag is meaningless, the words more so.

Anyone else read this as backwards ass-crackers?

This is pathetic. Union soldiers brutally burnt most of the city of Richmond to the ground, the former capital of the Confederacy. Where is the Southern pride? Let's all just let the media and PC police erase history and heritage because one 21 year old psychopath went on a shooting spree... The Confederate State of America sounds a lot better than the big government BS we are living under now.

The south lost. It's been over a century. Get the fuck over it.

fucking traitor

I'm OK with being called Cracker. The name derives from the act of cracking a whip on a slave. (Not a white food cracker) So all your doing by saying that is effectively calling me 'masta'.

Actually it comes from England. The English referred to the Scots as loud and obnoxious, and derogatorily referred to their voices as resembling the cracking of thunder. Thus, they were called 'Crackers.'

Later, when the Scottish & English immigrated to the US in droves, that terminology was brought with them.

If you want a long source, check out the book Albion's Seed. Here's a quick source, showing it's been traced back as far as Latin.

That's the far less common meaning of the word. Almost like calling someone gay. 99% of the time you mean they are a homosexual not happy.

One theory holds that slave foremen in the antebellum South used bullwhips to punish African slaves, with such use of the whip being described as "cracking the whip." The white foremen who cracked these whips thus became known as "crackers."[4][5][6] Contemporary sources suggest, however, that it was not slaves but pack animals over which the whips were "cracked

Blacks murder whites more than twice as often as the other way around. Of all the murders in the US 14.6% are black on white. and only 7% are white on black. according to the FBI
Lets please hurry up and remove this flag so the whites can get murdered a little less.

the whites

Fuckin racist.

Why the fuck is everyone so obsessed over whether or not this flag stays up?

The guy killed people. Can the flag thing wait until after the killing people thing?

Nothing like fighting racism with racial slurs

How about who gives a shit about a flag, there are bigger fish to fry, stop insinuating a race war is going on.

I grew up in Richmond (Va). We have an entire street of monuments devoted to southern generals. They did add Aurthur Ashe in there about 20 years ago in a laughable attempt to pretend like it wasn't weirdly racist/offensive .... but yeah ... not sure about this sign. Maybe it's a different Richmond?

no no, its the same RVA. I'm pretty sure it's photoshopped but there is a billboard right next to the giant I95 battle flag north of town. I just don't remember what's on the billboard...

The best part is, they did such a shit job on it, it looks like he stole books from kids and is using a tennis racket to keep them at bay.

Richmond was the capitol of the confederacy. It's a major part of Virginia history. Are we better off acting like it never happened?

That's exactly how I feel living in Alabama.

As a white man, I have never been offended by the term cracker. Nobody who would use that term is capable of offending me.

This looks fake.

bloody hell hahahah lmfao

lol richmond, va is a fucking cesspool that's riddled with black violence. but sure...clearly white people are the problem.

Can we all come to terms with a few things:

  1. That flag isn't The Confederate Flag (at least not the one used by the Confederate States of America),

  2. People have a freedom of speech, no matter how stupid you think they're using it (including the billboard),

  3. Can we stop beating a long dead horse?

  1. It was the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd iteration of the confederate flag. You simply linked the last interation.

  2. It was the battle standard for the confederate army. (Army of Tennesee, Army of Northern Virginia, Navy, etc).

  3. It is the most popularized (post-war decades) flag, and today is the flag most representative of the confederacy.

I dispute the validity of the assertions put forth in the text of this sign.

I would consider them backward ass-crackers.

I see Richmond hasn't changed since I moved away. It's weird, I moved south geographically, but north culturally
