Part of the series "visualizing reddit through comments".

All queries and more details at https://np.reddit.com/r/bigquery/comments/3cej2b/17_billion_reddit_comments_loaded_on_bigquery/

N°1

There is actually a character for that, not just N and a degree sign.

Oh, shit, is it supposed to be Number 1 and Number 2? I thought it was some notation indicating the degree of connection.

Does /r/Dota2 not overlap with any of the other gaming subreddits?

[–]Jiecut 1

While /r/leagueoflegends was on the other visualization, it and /r/Dota2 probably has too many connections with the subs in this picture. I think he wanted to show the cliques.

atheism = sandersforpresident

That explains a few things.

This could even be a post recommending subreddits to subscribe to that are related to ones you like! My favorite grouping is the one I'll call "the cringe network" going from 4chan through the cringes, but also including "oddly satisfying."

I might need to look into personality traits through subreddit networks!

My only suggestion is to make the image slightly bigger so you can avoid overlapping titles. It is sometimes hard to tell if they are connected or just the titles overlap at first glance. Great stuff.

Watchpeopledie go justice porn? Huh.

Some people's idea of justice is indistinguishable from petty revenge.

[–]zesty_zooplankton 9ポイント10ポイント  (1子コメント)

They probably just like watching bad stuff happen to other people, regardless of the cause.

That's actually fascinating if you follow the river of connections it's like you can watch people's descent into being cruel, shitty, assholes.

How is watching a video cruel? Videos like that serve as a good reminder to not fuck about on the roads, not get into trouble with scary types etc.

The idea that justice is a spectator sport, which is essentially the premise behind Justice Porn, is as perverse as it is harmful to society. Justice isn't about "people getting what they deserve," it's about enforcing the laws of a society for the purpose of creating a safer living space for everyone. Ridiculing and demonizing people who step outside those laws does NOTHING productive; it is at best onanistic.

To my mind there is little difference between the the ilk of Justice Porn and Nancy Grace. They are equally damaging to society and equally prevent true Justice from occurring. But that's just my opinion on the issue.

What I was actually referring to is if you see what connects to Justice Porn and what Justice porn then connects to; you will notice a trend from subs that maybe focus on light jabs and mockery, but over time they descend into outright cruelty and Subreddits that openly preach hate.

But you're implying there's a descent from justiceporn into watchpeopledie, are you suggesting watchpeopledie is a hate sub? It's really not, it's morbid of course, but it's more about the visceral brutal fragility of the human condition than 'hating' in any capacity.

Actually I'm not saying anything about that sub in particular, in fact the arrows seem to suggest the opposite movement between those subs that what you are suggesting. I'm referring to the connection to R/cringe and its many subsequent connections. That is a Subreddit that at its best is light mockery and at its worst is downright cruel. That sub connects to quite a few similar subs that are even more vitriolic and cruel.

Watch People Die I would imagine ( I don't go there because I have actually seen a person die and it's pretty fucked up) is a sub for people with morbid curiosity which is not inherently a bad thing; such curiosity is quite common. I can't speak to what the commenter community is there because again, I have never been. So I think the problem we have here is that you misunderstood what i said.

Also( sorry to double comment) for the record "making an example" of people doesn't work. The only people intimidated by such tactics are those who were unlikely to commit crimes in the first place. Try to remember that most crime is committed out desperation, drug induced stupor, or momentary emotional spikes. None of those are things which are best served by widely and openly mocking people, if anything that will make the problem worse.

Mate, I am about the most softly-softly, gently-gently advocates of rehabilitation and reform, and an advocate for prisoner's rights and all sort of stuff like that.

Like it or not, people fuck up on camera worldwide, if I come across a video of it, I wont avert my gaze, because it's interesting. It's different for vocal posters saying really brutal shit in the comments but it's a broad stroke to paint a sub with

Mens Rights, Bernie Sanders and Atheism - the unholy Reddit trinity.

I'm a bit surprised it was /r/SandersForPresident and not /r/Libertarian

I think the chart indicates a relationship between SFP and Atheism, and Mens Rights and Atheism, but not necessarily Men's Rights and SFP.

Definitely this. Think of it as a venn diagram. Atheism falls under Men's rights and atheism falls under SandersForPresident; but their circles themselves do not necessarily share any commonalities other than mutual interest. Otherwise we would see a "trinity" reflexive relationship.

elia5 - atheism and mens rights connection? I just don't see it!

Both subs filled to the brim with immature crybabies who think the world is out to persecute them.

Oh I don't frequent either, didn't see the similarities!

[–]Toukai 8

Both have plenty of persecution complexes.

Persecution complexes? There are some countries where atheism is punishable by execution. Even in America atheists get discriminated against, you think an atheist would ever have a chance to be president in America? They are generally viewed as less trust worthy.

And there are some problems that men face that deserve attention. I don't use r/atheism or r/mensrights so maybe the people there are idiots but the idea of atheism and mensrights shouldn't just be labeled as having a persecution complex

Whiny persecution complex and a smug sense of superiority.

If you support Sanders and you're an MRA you haven't been paying attention.

If you're a MRA you haven't been paying attention.

I think a lot of people attribute things from RedPill to MRA. Not that I give a shit about either of them.

Excuse my ignorance, are they not pretty similar?

Eh, sort of? Red pill is to MensRights as TERFs are to Feminism (Trans-exclusionary Radical Feminists in case you don't know).

Ok, disclaimer, I've poked around both for maybe 10 minutes to see wtf goes on there. MRAs seem more obsessed with the very very few things that are unfair to men. I think their biggest issues are:

1) Court fairness, meaning when the court decides on child custody, it goes towards the mother

2) Abortion choice, aka "the financial abortion"

And other things I probably didn't stick around enough or they don't talk about enough outside of MRA land for me to pick up on

Red Pillers are just straight up sexist, their biggest issues are:

1) Finding a woman who "knows her place". These are the "get in the kitchen I am alpha boss" types that think women serve them

2) Knocking them up with a ton of kids

So, to tell the difference I generally ask myself "is this whining about unfair dude shit?" or "is this straight up sexist asshole shit?".

My 0.02 of your chosen currency.

MRA

3) Culture of rape.

I have to think they do have a point, at least on the idea 1/5 women will be raped in college...

the idea 1/5 women will be raped in college...

...the fact that I'm seeing this on dataisbeautiful makes me so sad. The only false figure thrown around more then this is the .77 cents to a dollar women make.

FYI this was debunked tons of times.

Libertarians aren't 100% for Sanders. You've gotta remember Libertarians still have a few bright shades red, and he's a bit too democrat for some. '

For example, I personally can't get 100% behind him because of the whole "Free college for everyone" thing. If he updates it to "Free Trade school and discounted college" or "Two years free career training" for everyone then we can be the best of friends.

Libertarians aren't 100% for Sanders

Shouldn't they generally be 0% for Sanders. Anyone that identifies with both libertarianism (as it is usually used in the US to refer to far right economic views) and also supports Sanders is very confused.

Well there is such a thing as libertarian socialism. But yes, most Americans who consider themselves libertarians are quite decidedly capitalists.

Yes, American right-wing libertarians have completely hijacked the word to the point where the word "libertarian" in the US now just means right-wing libertarian.

Naom Chomsky is American and identifies as a libertarian socialist so they do exist here.

I think libertarians would support his social views: abortion, birth control, drugs, etc.

So maybe they could be like 25% Sanders, tops.

Agreed. I'm much more likely to vote for Rand Paul because I can't get behind some of Sanders' thoughts on economics.

Libertarians aren't 100% for Sanders.

Of course not, Sanders' policies are pretty much the opposite of libertarian.

He meant that r/Atheism feels like it should overlap with r/Libertarian. People who are suspicious of authority.

Seriously. I know quite a few people who see libertarianism through a purely social prism- they claim to be libertarian but are socialists in practice. As an economic libertarian, I'm not just opposed to Sanders- I'm legitimately terrified of him.

[–]gluten_free_asbestos 4ポイント5ポイント  (8子コメント)

Where does the MRA - Atheism link come from? Is there some historical link? I can't think of any reason why there would be such a big overlap, or perhaps a bigger overlap than for MRA and some given political ideology, or atheism and skepticism.

Don't forget KotakuInAction.

Yeah, KiA and MensRights sharing the same commenters? What a shock. Willing to bet there would have been a pretty big overlap there with FPH too.

The KiA/FPH overlap was not insignificant.

ITT, people misunderstanding not only the graph, but positing unprovable statements.

Don't worry, I'm sure everyone can find ways to push their agenda using this data.

Eh? Why would you expect FPH and men's rights to overlap?

Ya that was also the section that caught my eye.

Was going to comment on that too - I am a little surprised!

I saw that too. You couldn't make this shit up.

What's wrong with Bernie Sanders? Honest question

I don't think there's anything wrong with him in particular, and I like him as a candidate, but the "Bernie Sanders will absolutely win the nomination and has no flaws" echo chamber on reddit gets pretty annoying.

I don't really have a strong opinion about Sanders (I'm Canadian)--he's just associated with the other two sub-reddits in the visualization.

I would make two observations about Reddit culture and Bernie Sanders:

  • His emergence and sudden popularity on Reddit seems to me to highly mirror the site's previous affection for Ron Paul. I understand the two men's politics are different, but Reddit seems to have an affection for old, white underdogs.

  • It feels like an expression of Reddit's all-too-common sexism that I never see any news on the front page about Hillary Clinton, but routinely see news about Sanders. In the past week, there have been 36 stories about Sanders with at least 1000 votes, and none about Clinton with that many votes. This despite the fact that Clinton remains the clear frontrunner.

i'd give this some creedence, i've never seen a clinton reference or meme on reddit at all, not even a pro/negative one.

occasionally it's about her old secretary of state emails, or her use of a blackberry on airforce one (?) ... IDK. fairly stodgy stuff, and not really demoting or unprofessional at this point in time.

As long as you don't tie your family dog to the roof of a car, or have 3 or more houses, or berate poor people in large gatherings where people might record you, your election chances are going to be pretty good at this stage of the 2016 elections.

I don't believe or think it's racial or gender or bias per se, there's just not a lot that hilary could do to impress people as she's been unofficially running for decades on the post that she would continue in politics forever. and ever, and ever ...

the sanders thing, i read this as sarcasm, or even speculative derision, much like Bernie Mac for president memes, or Donald Trump, they both get the clown vote for showing up at all without qualifications.

IMO it's because of the insane duration of the election cycle, every election has it's candidate that the people pick up as the singular example of being the most incompetent, and in the republican primaries, that often becomes it's own race to the bottom with herman cain, et al. trying to impress people into being noticed. it doesn't work well for the republican party, because there's only one place for the greatest patriot to represent the republican party, and it's an impossible chair to fill.

Unless you're clint eastwood.

futurolgy->politics

the topics are different, but the discussion is the same.

S/O /r/roosterteeth and /r/funhaus kissing on the bottom :**:

[–]dbarefoot 9ポイント10ポイント  (4子コメント)

Interesting work! The correlation between hockey and baseball seems pretty unexpected.

People talking about baseball are much more likely to talk about hockey than programming.

I would have expected a stronger correlation between many other sports sub-reddits before baseball. Perhaps it has to do with the size of the sub-reddits /u/fhoffa chose.

[–]Jiecut 0

You can see his code for the visualization.

https://np.reddit.com/r/bigquery/comments/3cej2b/17_billion_reddit_comments_loaded_on_bigquery/csxg433

There could possibly be too many connections, I'm not sure.

God, look at the contributors to relationships. Childfree, raisedbynarcissists, offmychest.. what a car crash, and exactly what you would expect too.

thats the one that got me too..

Eh it makes sense, who is more likely to go and whinge about their relationship problems to an Internet forum rather than the person they are actually mad at: A mature adult who has normal interactions with physical human beings or people who see themselves as perpetual victims, generally have large egos, and yet paradoxically have no self-esteem?

Exactly what I was thinking. I know someone who comments all three subs and she's a perpetual victim.

Surprised about the MaleFashionAdvice --> HipHopHeads

Thought so too, but on closer look, it's MaleFashionAdvice ?--? StreetWear --> HipHopHeads

I wasnt surprised at that one at all ! most vocal people at MaleFashionAdvice attempt to dress up like hiphopheads in casual wear

Apparently this isn't actually a link but I'm surprised it's not - most of MFA is made up of urban white men aged 16-26 or so, which is almost certainly the largest hip-hop listening demographic.

All of those scenes (MaleFashionAdvice, HipHop, sneakers, streewear) are about one thing: Dudes trying to impress other dudes

That is the common denominator.

It's not about dudes looking good for ladies. It's about dudes impressing other dudes and trying to one-up them.

IIRC in plenty of polls the MFA community has said HHH is there most frequented other subreddit.

[–]Rivarr 6

I'd love to see a more focussed look at /r/kotakuinaction & /r/gamerghazi.

or the byzantine relationships of posters in /r/SubredditDrama and /r/ShitRedditSays to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. or, doesn't.

Yeah I was looking for the connections to gamerghazi

Why does the chart use /r/pcgaming instead of the much larger /r/pcmasterrace?

I was a bit surprised /r/pcmasterrace wasn't in the pcgaming/buildapc/games/steam bubble at all.

[–]Jiecut 0

It's probably because /r/pcmasterrace has connections with a lot of subs.

Probably because /r/pcmasterrace has more in common with /r/circlejerk than anything else?

I like how to prove their point, the /r/PCMasterRace dwellers downvote anyone who doesn't like them.

Yeah, that'll prove you're not a circlerjerk

Their rule:

This is not a satirical or circlejerk subreddit.

Has always given me a chuckle, in what way isn't that subreddit a circlejerk? They circlejerk more than /r/circlejerk.

Dude, thems fightin' words! Aint nobody jerkin' harder than r/circlejerk!

If you actually look at the top posts day to day it's mostly a less serious /r/pcgaming, there's mostly news and some pictures of people's PC's.

Eh. I tend to avoid the front page of PCMR like a plague unless something big is going on. There's very little variation in the FP content other than:

  • Look at my boxes!
  • Some stupid dev/pub is doing something stupid again, let's make fun of them!
  • GabeN! Guys GabeN!
  • Look at this ignorant post about consoles that totally isn't the OP karma-whoring and make fun of them!
  • PSA: Pre-orders are bad!
  • Look at the mods that someone else made! Take that consoles!

Trudging through the new and removing all of the red tag labels makes PCMR at least tolerable, and don't get me wrong there is more discussions and valuable discussions that /r/pcgaming simply due to the larger amount of subscribers. But as far as quality content is concerned, that's not PCMR's wheelhouse.

Do you have any data for /r/askhistorians?

I had to dig even deeper to find something there

http://i.imgur.com/lwK2BXs.png

Can you do subs that supposedly brigade a lot, /r/shitredditsays /r/subredditdrama and /r/conspiracy ?

Well, /r/bestof kinda tops all of them

Thanks for that. It's about what I thought.

I was really hoping that /r/bad_religion was going to be about the punk band and it just so happened that many historians were really into punk.

Suddenly 4chan makes more sense now that I know what kind of people go through it.

You were unsure about the kind of people who like 4chan?

Suddenly Circlejerk and Cringe make more sense, knowing they frequent /r/4chan. It's like a network of reddit-hating subreddits.

I'd be interested to see where SRS and SRD sit on this map.

Damnit I like that sub and nothing near it except BPT. The cringe network is really, really boring.

cna you do a graph of subs with the same mods?

Interesting, because I was looking at some of the subs I comment in and it turns out there are lines to other subs I also visit.

I bet it has something to do with the fact that when someone posts something, there are users that say "nah, try /r/thissubhere".

I am pretty surprised/r/pcmasterrace isn't part of the /r/battlestations and /r/buildapc clique, at least according to this.

/r/KotakuInAction overlaps with /r/MensRights. No overlaps with a gaming sub. For some reason this is utterly not surprising.

I'm a little more surprised /r/kotakuinaction doesn't overlap with /r/TumblrInAction.

I'm even more surprised that SubredditDrama and ShitRedditSays weren't included on here. I'd love to see if they overlap significantly with JustNeckbeardThings and the assorted CircleJerk subreddits.

They might. I know I see plenty of Justneckbeardthings posts on SRD. The internet makes plenty of strange bedfellows.

If they were included people would be getting shadowbanned left and right.

[–]Jiecut 1

I think he removed things with too many connections. (/r/Iama /r/askreddit)

I'd still like to see just a single graph with only the aforementioned subreddits.

Too many connections would imply that they are practically everywhere.

[–]Jiecut 1

Here's an example for /r/movies posted by OP.

https://i.imgur.com/G7FiZWO.png

It's possibly that a lot of people post in those subreddits. If >10% of all subreddit users post in that subreddit than there isn't really any point having them on the list.

Can anyone explain how OP got this data? Pcmasterrace isnt even on this list. OP definitely fucked up somewhere

It likely wasn't included due to its reputation as being a circle jerk, regardless of true discussion or not.

[–]Jiecut 0

/r/pcmasterrace might have too many connections.

To be fair, they have created other small gaming subs, but w/e.

In recent threads, KIA has begun to admit it's not really about gaming, but about fighting "SJWs" as a whole. It's not surprising to see the overlap.

More like people create separate accounts for KiA and their real gaming discussions for fear of doxxing.

That's what I did.

Wait-

/r/baseball --> /r/hockey ?

Does that mean people who post in baseball also post a lot in hockey?

Probably cause most sports fans watch more than one sport

2 words: Jays Fans..

(hence the connection to r/Canada)

/u/fhoffa, or any data crunchers, how do you create this sort of relationship map?

I do genetic genealogy, and I have some 20-30 "cousins" genetically related to each other. I can compare how they are related to each other on a matrix based on how many chromosome segments they share with each other: http://i.imgur.com/5FaB4Py.png

From the matrix alone, its difficult to see that there are definitely groups of persons in certain families. I've divided them up into origins: Acadians, Quebecians, Mayflower Descendants, New Hampshirites, Irish. The great majority of them have origins in 17th century Acadia and thus there was some inbreeding, which makes them the strongest genetic matches.

I was wondering if there was a way to take this data and draw lines related to each other, with distance between "names" relative to the values (3500 for example is self, 2600 are siblings, 2000 are half-siblings, 100 is ~3rd cousins and below are 5+ cousins)

How is your Graph determining direction of each Path? From the queries in the linked post, it's just determining overlap, which is not a Graph-building algorithm.

The basics of connections are:

  • >10% of 'Documentaries' authors also comment on 'dataisbeautiful'. The reverse is not true, hence Documentaries->dataisbeautiful.

  • >10% of 'unitedkingdom' authors also comment on 'britishproblems'. The reverse is true, hence unitedkingdom<->britishproblems.

I didn't even notice the bi directional arrows at first, those are slick.

I was wondering where /r/theredpill would should up on this.

Are the 3 GTA subreddits meant to be separate to the other Games or are they truly their own little cult of GTA, who left the lands of gaming to become a religion, and finally resummon their Dark Master, Rockstar Social Club.

Can someone explain to me the difference between N1 and N2

There seems to be a fair bit of overlap between /r/TheLastAirbender and /r/MassEffect as well.

Is there any way to track the subreddit linkages for a specific subreddit wihtout writing the SQL query yourself?

I'm definitely in some of those.

Found a few clusters where I'm subscribed to every sub listed!

I'm curious; what does /r/androidcirclejerk look like?

[–]Krail 0

This is really interesting! What are you using to find this data?

[–]Jiecut 0

He's using bigquery. You can check his post there for details.

It seems /r/sports in in an odd place. The connecting subs are pretty unrelated.

/r/shittycarmods just got another subscriber

May I request a graph of the Reddit mafia? I want to know who the enforcers are. Now that, would be a AI dream machine.

I'm surprised /r/amisexy is not intertwined with /r/amiugly and /r/rateme

Hm, I wonder where something like /r/furry or /r/furryjerk would fit in on this.

I've always wondered whether /r/CrusaderKings and /r/asoiaf have a lot of overlap, since I see lots of GoT jokes in comments and CKII has a GoT mod.

I don't know if the data is stored or accessible, but I'd LOVE to see this when r/fatpeoplehate was still up and around.

the nsfw section.. dead on. i am one of those. all of my comments on those subs are probably "source?"

This seems very accurate.

Source:I spend too much time in the Cringey subs.

Sports right in the middle of the tech subs

Where my Documentaries/DataIsBeautiful/Futurology/Space boys at?

Where is pcmasterrace? Am I just not seeing it?

/r/me_irl is in the same area as 4chan, circlejerk, and ImGoingToHellForThis. I wish I knew this before I temporarily subscribed to it.

How can we get one of these for /r/collapse? I've always wondered the subreddit bleed-over from sub.

ITT: People making wild assumptions based on limited information.

Classic Reddit.

Another interesting thing is that instead of looking at cliques you could look at the subs with a ton of connections and how those subs connect with each other.
