I'm reading a book on the Vikings and TIL that the infamous Blood Eagle is a myth derived from later saga writers misunderstanding an skaldic poem that said "the eagle cut King Ælla's back" (that is, that eagles munched on his corpse on the battlefield) as "the eagle was cut into King Ælla's back".

True, but being a sequel I wasn't expecting too much. Especially with a movie like Ted

I hate Family Guy, though. I try not to get too worked up at Seth MacFarlane because he's clearly a very talented guy, but man is his humour ever not for me. I saw A Million Ways to Die in the West and I think I maybe laughed twice, it was a pretty terrible movie.

My thoughts for Thursday:

I've worked all week alone. So there's that. Work til 5pm today, hopefully not alone. I need to try and get some things done for city year before registration. That includes a tb test and physical. I need to plan to move out of my apartment.

My parents want me to go to Wisconsin with them for a weekend. They'd stop in Pittsburgh and stay a night then I'd go with them. I think I'll go.

So the Irish player left /r/HistoricalWorldPowers. Pretty sure the central Asian players will leave too. They haven't posted in a while. Same with south america. Also northern europe may become lonely again. So if anyone wants to join pls join. The time spent isn't too bad if you reddit regularly.

I started playing LoL and I suck. :(

Sooo onto real stuff. The Chinese economy crashed. That may be slightly more major than Greece defaulting, thoughts? My brother seemed worried.

I've been trying to quit caffeine for the better part of a year. I've decided to end my struggle and just go back to regularly consuming coffee.

Also, I've been watching Sense8 because my friend told me that the show had shaft tomb figures in it. Sure enough, they popped up in two episodes. It's so nice to see tiny bits of the area I study show up in non-academic settings.

I just came across this article on an alt-history novel where the Romans invade 13th century Cahokia. The article contains minor spoilers about the plot of the novel.

[–]MBarry829God bless you T-Rex 6ポイント7ポイント  (2子コメント)

The caffeine struggle is real. I'm legitimately addicted. If I don't have any then I'll go through with drawl symptoms after about 24 hours. I get the shakes for crying out loud.

[–]Mictlantecuhtli 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

I get a headache for about a week.

Sometimes I get shaky while on caffeine and I normally only drink one cup of coffee a day.

[–]MBarry829God bless you T-Rex 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

If I'm consuming caffeine I'll only get the shakes if I consume a lot than I'm used to in a short time, like with an energy drink. But the headaches. Man, they'll kick in first and are the worst. Sometimes I'll forgo coffee and cola on the weekends without even realizing it, and a massive headache will settle in. It's worse than a hangover headache.

[–]SinlessSinnerSinning 4ポイント5ポイント  (2子コメント)

I gave up caffeine for a couple months until I realized I only gave it up to prove I could give it up, there was no real benefit.

[–]Mictlantecuhtli 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

I managed to go two months without caffeine as my longest stretch. What I noticed the most is that I could fall asleep easier and my sleep was more restful.

Whenever I'm not on caffeine I feel dull. Like I'm a washed out reflection of normal me.

[–]ciderczarUnrepentant Ouiaboo 4ポイント5ポイント  (1子コメント)

I was listening to an old Infinite Monkey Cage about serendipity in science, and apparently it's hugely beneficial for research labs to give their scientists and engineers a period of time to just use their labs for whatever they want. Andre Geim got both his Nobel and Ig Nobel prizes thanks to this policy.

Apparently a good amount of progress has been made by faffing about.

A lot of the early evidence for plate tectonics came when Harry Hess, Fred Vine and J Tuzo Wilson were just dicking around at the latter's office in Cambridge in 1965. Vine had just introduced the Vine-Mathews-Morley hypothesis and was trying to see if it applied around the world. He offhandedly mentioned he thought there was a spreading ridge off the Pacific Northwest. Wilson chimed in "lol, I have bathymetric and magnetic surveys of the northeast Pacific that have been sitting there since the late 1950s." So the Juan de Fuca ridge was discovered as a divergent boundary. Neither of the other two even taught at Cambridge. They were just, fortunately, there.

I'm reposting this from a Moronic Monday from a couple of weeks ago. I hope that's okay.

Good morning /r/badhistory!

So I've been reddit-squating on a sub called /r/mosaicearth the last few weeks. The inspiration to do so came after I found some sub that specialize in running in map games, and led me down a rabbit hole in exploring such games on other web fora (again).

What is mosaic earth intended to be? Well back in my alternatehistory.com days I was involved in running and playing this map game. The core concept involved transporting various countries with different points of departures (PODs) to a single Earth and the free playing what happens next. Our most successful game ran for about 6 months and was probably one of the most fun things I've done on the internets before.

Mosaic Earth is a forum based nation game, similiar to /r/worldpowers and /r/historicalworldpowers . In the game each player takes on the role of a nation and plays out the narrative in a semi-cooperative manner. That is to say the goal isn't to win, but to further the time line of events. The game has it's roots on the forum for alternatehistory.com.

The key component to Mosaic Earth is what is called the ISOT - Island in the Sea of Time, which is taken from the SM Stirling novel of the same name. In that novel, the island of Nantucket and its inhabitants are propelled backwards through time from the 1990s to the Bronze Age. The AH.com community generized it to refer moving any geographic body backwards or forwards through time, and the hi-jinks that ensue.

For Mosaic Earth, the ISOT is multiple nations from multiple timelines. Using the most successful Mosaic Earth that I helped run as an example you had countries with various points of departures with a technological level (I know, chartism but balance requires it) of the mid-1880s participating. So in the Americas you had a United States (where the Union crushed the Army of Northern Virginia more decisively on July 4, 1863 at Gettysburg) a Kingdom of New Granada (with a point of departure in 1549 with the ponatification of Juan Alvarez y Alva de Toledo), La Plata Republic (that won independence from Spain in the 1770s), and an Empire of Peru. For areas of the Earth not claimed, since there was large stretches in the Americas, Asia, and Africa, we decided to run the world in 1400 AD, partially to capture that imperialistic zeal.

The game was (is? I don't know, as I haven't been active there in years) mostly free play, with very few rules. A cabal of moderator-players was utilized to counter balance any blatant cheesing. It would probably be better to have a more formalized rule set.

Anyways, I started up /r/mosaicearth a few weeks ago on a whim. I was partially inspired after lurking on the aforementioned world powers games. Since the games were some of the most fun, and engaging things I've ever done in a web community I feel like trying something. On a meta level, alternate history helped drive my interest and understanding of real history- I believe it to be a very useful educational device. Mostly, I'm looking for thoughts on organization and rules, or even just general interest.

Also, true to Giants fashion Jason Pierre-Paul managed to blow off one of his fingers by literally playing with fireworks. Soon all NYG players will be protected by a cocoon of some sort during the off season. Expect Eli who is such a lovable doofus, that it may be impossible to hurt him.

I'm not commenting on reddit drama. The sheer volume of dipshits is just tiring me out. I want hockey to be on again, that was way more interesting. Any CFL fans here? I'm thinking of going to watch the Eskimos, they seem like fun.

Dreamed I was in China last night. Now that I think about it, it's actually really interesting because I was speaking in Chinese in the dream, except that I was speaking really badly. People make a big deal of dreaming in your second language, but I don't remember anybody else speaking Chinese, just me muddling along. Funny that.

Not much else to report. I organized a pub night for the Federal Liberals tonight, hopefully that'll be fun. Yesterday I worked an eight-hour shift on my feet and then wet straight to the gym, so I'm pretty impressed with myself.

EDIT: My Taiwanese uncle just sent me a picture of some mangoes, which reminds me of the real reason to go to Asia: the fruit is AMAZING

The comment below from this thread is really bugging me. It is someone responding to a question on how anyone can divorce Mao's philosophy from some of his actions while in power.

Well like a lot of people he was deluded into believing he was doing what was right and pragmatic. Most people in power make choices that kill millions.

If late capitalism is the monster he thought it was, which i'm inclined to agree with(we're talking the systematic deaths of billions) then I can't really fault him, the delusion was the idea that he could make things better.

What I find most interesting about him was his military genius though. Before Mao there wasn't really a Sun Tzu for the lumpen proletariat, most military manuals assumed a king or general in command of an imperial army, not peasants with modern weapons in international protracted wars.

Sure Mao's a complicated figure but when people rush to defend anyone with his kind of history do they really think through what they are saying?

Anyway, I'm sure it would consume hours of someone's time trying to rufute it, but mostly I just needed to vent.
