I don't actually like Buffalo Wild Wings that much (there's a better place near me that I frequent), and it's decently overpriced, but good for what it is.

I don't even know how she got that number. Number of brownshirts, maybe? They were close to 4 million. The Nazi Party won 17,000,000 votes in the '33 Reichstag elections, so those figures are a bit off in any case.

AskHistorians 内の im_another_prsn_now によるリンク why was Wilhelm II, the German leader of world war 1 not as famous as Hitler? Also what were his views about world war 2 ? was he proud of Hitler? (serious)

[–]BipolarBear0 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

A lot of public distaste for Wilhelm II concerned World War I, being the final nail in the coffin of a series of poor diplomatic decisions, which impacted his persona both at home and abroad with Germany's allies. The military in particular revolted against Wilhelm, which ultimately led to his abdication from the throne in 1918. His exile was not only a result of military losses, but also of shifting public/governmental opinion which made him fear for his safety. Hitler, himself being a soldier during World War I, felt this special distaste for Wilhelm II which was heavily present in armed forces ranks, and many servicemen returning to Germany post-war felt similarly.

At the same time, the reign of Bismarck was mythologized as a time of great prosperity and strength for the German empire, hence the term "second reich" and Nazi Germany's labeling of itself as the Third Reich. Wilhelm II's poor foreign policy decision-making and brash actions in the geopolitical arena were seen as a counter to the era of strength and prosperity under Bismarck. Now, the Nazi Party did view the second reich as lasting until 1918 (the establishment of the Weimar Republic), but that also carried the effect of a public perception that Wilhelm's actions directly led to the downfall of this reich.

It's an excellent trilogy, probably the most informative and comprehensive set of books about Nazi Germany out there (at least in my opinion). I think the benefit of The Coming of the Third Reich is that you get a very vivid picture of the early days of the Nazis and events under the Weimar Republic that ultimately led to their rise, as opposed to other novels which just focus on 1933-1945. It's a great contextualization of the Third Reich that actually notes why and how Nazi Germany came to be rather than just how it was.

In terms of content/subject matter, The Third Reich at War is probably the best of the three. But from a historical perspective and a thorough understanding of Nazi Germany, I'd have to go with The Coming of the Third Reich.

I should say I've read the whole trilogy once, but The Coming of the Third Reich is the only book I've read twice through just so I'd get all the details/info.

It's hanging in my garage so I can't get a great picture. I don't actually know for sure whether it's a naval flag, but I just assumed based on the words printed at the top, which say "ensign emerson mfg. Co." I've googled every combination of these phrases and couldn't find any info on it. I found that ensign mfg co was an auto manufacturer in the late 1800s, but was consolidated into a larger company by 1905, about 7 years before the 48-star flag first came into effect.

Wilhelm II was viewed by many of the German population as an ineffective and weak leader, one of the harbingers of the downfall of the German reich.

He lived his latter days in exile in the aftermath of World War I, and his reign was a major inciting factor in how the Nazi Party managed to seize control so effectively - Wilhelm was a major propaganda piece, and the Nazis promised a return from the downfall of what Wilhelm brought upon Germany, from a disastrous war to the Treaty of Versailles and the crippling of Germany's economy.

This was somewhat exacerbated in terms of propaganda by Wilhelm's deposition of Otto von Bismarck. The German people in the Weimar Republic idolized Bismarck and Germany's second reich during his reign. Bismarck eventually resigned over continual leadership disagreements with Wilhelm, which was viewed by many Germans in the Weimar Republic as the beginning death knell for Germany's proud stance and heritage. Thus, in the Nazis' promise for a return to Germany's greatness during the second reich under Bismarck, they effectively embraced the already omnipresent distaste for the events of the past few decades under Wilhelm II to seize control.

In regards to Hitler: Wilhelm was "proud" of him in the sense that he admired his accomplishments, particularly in the beginnings of World War II, and sought to use Hitler and the Nazis as a platform to return to power (or at least the restoration of a monarchy). Hitler, of course, did not feel the same, and Wilhelm's sparse attempts at communication with the ruling party failed.

I don't think his comments were directly racist, but that's not necessarily because he's not racist - he just stopped right short of contextualizing them and making them racist.

Knowing him, there was definitely racism behind those comments (as opposed to, say, drawing a connection between the trade of human trafficking and rape), but he did the thing a lot of contemporary bigots do where they self-censor and stop short of being outright racist to avoid massive controversy. Things like replacing "Jew" with "Zionist," or "black" with "thug," or in this case "Mexican" with "illegal immigrant." Unluckily for him, this strategy didn't work out in avoiding controversy.

Edit: Yeah, I'm now the guy who's editing his comment and asking why it was downvoted. Just doesn't make sense considering other comments in a similar vein are upvoted.
