Do they also have a "separate but equal" black and white cookie?

In twenty years their kids will laughingly use this picture as an example of how backward their Mom or Pop was. It'll be like when you tell people your racist old grandmother still calls Brazil nuts "nigger toes."

The Strom Thurmond cookie moves to a different case once they end the "Separate but equal" cookie. Honestly, I love the South but how can anyone wrap themselves around a flag that represents a government that nearly destroyed the union?

Perhaps because they're okay with the whole "almost destroyed the Union" thing?

maybe you dont realize they literally teach "the war of northern aggression" in a lot of southern schools

I did fail to realize that. I grew up in Dallas-Fort Worth, so the war was taught as "Southern Aggression" as they shot first. I wish many folks whom love the flag look at it critically and realize it isn't appropriate to fly that flag on the Capitol. I'm not a huge supporter of Lindsey, but I agree with his 'compromise': moving it to a museum. Hopefully a man with that amount of influence in our state can sway minds into not flying the flag on state grounds. Hopefully.

" 'Southern Aggression' as they shot first." The SC troops that surrounded Fort Sumter after SC seceded sent word to Lincoln in Washington that any attempt to re-supply the fort would bring on the first shot. Lincoln sent ships in to re-supply, casting the first stone.

So the federal government resupplied a federal installation off the coast of a newly-independent state, and they shouldn't have? Even if you recognize South Carolina's right as a state to secede, that's still like a kid saying "Don't cross this line or I'll kick you. A) Saying something is yours doesn't make it yours, and B) If you put the president in a position like that, he's pretty much got to call your bluff to maintain any authority.

If we are splitting hairs, we can easily argue that South Carolina started the war by being the first to leave the union.

Today I learned why I'm never going to Maurice's.

Bessigner reportedly protested desegregation by putting a sign up in his Piggie Park restaurant that read: The law makes us serve niggers, but any money we get from them goes to the Ku Klux Klan. He also offered a tableful of racist tracts, print outs, and pamphlets at his Columbia restaurants. One in particular argued that the Bible condoned slavery, and, as such, American slavery was not only just, but Almighty approved.

His sons run it now and are nowhere near this level of racism. All of the racist stuff is gone and most of the stuff about the civil war is gone, though there still is stuff there.

    His daughter, I think.

Nah, Lloyd Bessinger runs the restaurants and his brother (Paul?) runs the cooking pits.

Look, I'm not trying g to defend Maurice. Dude was a total dickbag with horrific ideas about race, politics and the world.... But that mustard sauce almost makes up for it. That shit is delicious.

My favorite pamphlet was simply titled "Abe Lincoln was a Liar." I saw that in 2002 and haven't been back since.

They are separate and equally sized, but let's not lie to ourselves. The white half is far more delicious.
