DMT Tapes Incident | Someone tell me what the fuck just happened (self.Vaporwave)

So, wait.

If DMT Tapes is folding, what was the point in my releases? What was the point in me getting you all of that traction, and getting you a foot in the door in the first place?

Since DMT is folding, here's a fun fact - when the fuck am I getting payed? When the fuck is ANYONE getting payed? NO is the most downloaded album on DMT by a fucking country mile, and yet I never recieved a damn penny. Same for Turn Off Existance, and I sure as hell know that if I ain't getting payed, nobody else is.

Also, who the fuck is gonna fill the gap? What else is there for newcomers in the Vaporwave scene, hmm?

Overall, I'm pissed off and disapointed. You had a great thing with DMT, and folding it before it's time is a letdown to everybody hoping to make it in the vaporwave scene. I'm sorry, but after people have put months of hard effort and work into a release for your label, closing up shop is the most selfish, not-giving-a-damn thing you can do.

You don't even have the excuse of "Running a label is hard", either! OSCOB and, hell, the owner of Dream Catalogue HIMSELF both offered to help you out, and to teach you the ropes on how to run a label succesfully. What did you do? You BLANKED OSCOB's ADVICE. You IGNORED Dream Catalogue's help, and even when JOHN ZOBELE came down off his high fucking throne, you still acted like you could manage it yourself.

In conclusion, you had every chance given to you, and you still managed to fuck it. Hopefully somewhere inbetween you realizing that 35 of the 175 releases were yours, and the fact that for 4 months your label's aesthetic was made in MS PAINT, SOMEWHERE inbetween there you'll learn how to run a fucking label decently.

the label was my 2015 project. hell, my 2015 hobby. you're still just as entitled to "get payed". message me about it, you'll get all of whatever you feel you're entitled to. and I accepted all of the above help and, in nearly all cases, benefited greatly at bringing the project to where I wanted to.

The project is complete. Like actually complete. Look at it. It's music that wasn't there 8 months ago. All of it. And it's not going anywhere, we're just ending the phase of new releases. I don't want to keep adding and adding and adding to it. I want to maintain what's there and just take it easy.

earnest question: if you had gotten onto Fortune 500 in 2013, and then they closed their doors (which they did), would you still be tantruming? because as I last recall, that roster gets steady attention to this day. and it isn't even maintained with downloads anymore. I'm basically saying, "I'll quit but I'll still maintain it all and keep it running." and yet look at what you've turned it into. Labels can end and all of their contents are just as valid.

you do all realize... the roster remains. 2016, 2017, 2018, as long as Bandcamp doesn't axe its vaporwave, this roster has all the ability to keep growing. New people enter this genre daily. They now have this list, amongst all the others like Dream Catalogue and Business Casual, to go to. FOR FREE. for YOUR music. I succeeded at doing exactly that. just because we're stopping new additions to a roster that was getting too big in the first place, that means nothing about your growth as an artist and your releases henceforth.

and finally, you know... I started this project poor, I did it all poor, I'm ending it poor. it was never about money. money I collected was put back into the project. Most of our artists made $3, $4, $5 tops. I wasn't going to pass out chump change and treat the vaporwave community to Arizona Tea. I put it back into Bandcamp download credits so that we can keep this shit free. We've had 9,000 downloads in 8 months. That's $140, most of it my own money, as we didn't start collecting until the end of May.

so in all honesty, I've done my job. I've done it well, hard, and I'm so proud of myself and all of you. This has been really really fun and I'm not even leaving this thing on any sullen note. I did what I wanted to do and what I claimed I would do.

It was trying to get yourself big off of other people's talent. People from the /r/vaporwave community talk to me like this every day in private message. Every day. Angry, angry people a select few of you are. at the end of it, it's why I need to get out.

Shima33 has threatened me three times in the last six months. all over misunderstandings.

this was as fun for me as interacting with all of you. and for most of you that was great but for those that made it too hard, it really is too hard. I want to return to wherever I was where people were sweet and kind and didn't spout a dozen lies and then watch me clamor to try and explain how much bullshit is being conveyed in all of this.

This is one of them, in case anyone wanted to see. As you will note, I invited him to PM me about working something out for his funds (of which, dude's made $9. but you're right, he is entitled to it, even the Bandcamp credits alone cost more than that to host his albums completely free)

okay but i always thought it was pretty obvious all the releases were vito and all the covers were done in mspaint from the get-go. like new age tapes w james ferraro. if u wanted something Legitimate and Lucrative release it yourself or take it to fucking Dream Catalogue or Illuminated Paths. i've never been too interested in the music on dmt tapes aside from heavy systems inc. and latrace but. i always thought it was obvious dmt tapes was an experiment in free music.

A lot of people brought a lot of genuine passion and hard work into DMT Tapes. It was never an experiment - I -hate- it when people refer to music as an experiment. Music is all about expression, and if you ain't expressing yourself, stop making music. Go into IT or something equally expresionless. I'm nothing if not an artist - I'm not an artist without expression.

I never claimed to be the arbiter of that, but it's pretty obvious to tell when and when not a project has effort put into it, or whether or not it's done for the sake of it. I can safely say that 80% of what's on DMT Tapes has effort behind it, and to refer to the whole thing as an experiment is rather rude to the people who invested time in their music.
