Is that a cube of ice in your wine???

When I bartended, I had a woman come in all the time and do that. I asked why one time. In short, she was an alcoholic, and couldn't stop. So, by icing the wine, she felt it made it last longer, and diluted the effects. She was also petite, and felt the extra volume of the ice cube melting made her 'full' faster.

I didn't say it made sense :)

I mean that's actually all logical. It just wouldn't make a very significant difference.

I know people that water down their own booze (for these same reasons). I believe the difference is significant.

Nothing wrong with watering down wine. The Romans did it. Europeans do it sometimes. I've caught friends and relies doing it with sweet wines.

Nothing wrong with watering down wine. The Romans did it.

Yet another proof of the decline of the American Empire.

Seriously. The French will do it for kids, that's about it. There is a french expression: mettre de l'eau dans son vin, to put water in your wine, that means: to compromise.

Well, so long as you have some regular folks to look down your nose at that should keep you happy. So I'd say it's a win-win all round.

I'd say it's a win-win all round

More like a "vin-vin" all round

[–]TEDDY_FUCKIN_RUXPIN 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Get back to navigating, Chekhov.

Drinking poison will bring down the empire faster than watering down the poison.

[–]Intensive__Purposes 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yes, surely the addition of one beverage into another beverage could only be a harbinger of the fall of America. You've cracked the code.

the greeks did it before them too, watering down wine is as old as wine

Yes it is. It was a bit of a thrown together meal. The vodka glass became the wine glass. Less dishes, and I was fine with it. The wife was out so my culinary etiquette took a back seat to pragmatism.

I know that glass, and I'm pretty sure all of my cups (that aren't plastic) came from bars or booze people bought me at holidays, so I'm assuming it came with some beverage or another. =D

But why the ice?

So drink gets cold

Watery wine though?

No thank you

Then drink it

Im assuming that when he said that there would be less dishes, he implied that he had vodka earlier and was reusing the same cup.

So a hint of vodka, wine and an ice cube is what he's drinking?

People put ice in sangria all the time. Ancient Greeks and Romans even diluted their wine with water. Relax.

I am very relaxed.

Good. The triple question mark combo made me worried.

Watering down wine can actually sometimes improve the taste.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/28/dining/28curious.html

That said... OP is pairing a $15 bottle with smoky tabasco sauce?

OP is pairing a $15 bottle with smoky tabasco sauce?

Sounds like a good idea.

Yes it is... He's clearly out of his mind, or american.

I'm American and drink wine all the time. I've never heard of anyone putting ice in wine. Is that a thing?

Yeah same here. I don't really know why Americans were called out.

I think Americans are stereotyped for "putting ice in our drinks."

To be fair, we probably do that more than most.

My dad puts ice in milk.

[–]Boudicca_Rebellion 22ポイント23ポイント  (1子コメント)

Your dad is going to jail.

And he does not collect 200$

[–]Jenkins_Palabro_ESQ 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I put ice in cold milk. Just consume within 60 seconds, nothing better than washing down something that calls out for ice-cold milk with ice-cold milk

I've heard that folks in the UK don't like ice in their drinks because their teeth are so rotten and sensitive that drinking cold beverages is painful.

While in reality the percentage of Americans with tooth decay is actually much higher than in the UK. Mate.

Stop ruining the stereotype-off with your logic.

I feel like using 12 years olds skews le data. I make fun of British adults, not kids!

Bad teeth became a British stereotype back during WWII - but after the war, Britain started their universal healthcare and dental systems, where the most you'll pay (per my British husband) is about 60 pound for ANY dental work, and the vast majority -all essential work, that is - is absolutely free.

That being said, Britain's culture isn't so superficial as American's in regards to teeth - only about 3% of the population have had teeth whitening, for instance. They just don't consider the uniformity of everyone having a perfect white smile to be as important as Americans feel it is.

Isn't the stereotype based more upon orthodontic care and stained teeth from tea drinking? It seems like a vast majority of US kids gets braces for even minor crooked teeth. Cosmetic procedures such a whitening and veneers also seem more common in the US.

No. Orthodontic treatment also comes under the NHS free proviso for children up to age 18. My parents could've been millionares- wouldn't matter, still free till age 18 for the patient. I was a recipient of it myself, along with the surgery I required beforehand. After which it falls back in to the set rate cost of everything else, provided if (and only if) you earn more than the set poverty line.

US servicemen stationed here during said war saw the poor healthcare our armed forces had at the time, plus grim diets & shitty rationing didn't help our poor service-blokes, and took it home with them, and that's where it started.

Today? I'd give my right tit (and the left too, tbh) to be living back home in the UK so I can get my free / set-rate dental. My missus is nearly correct: for seriously major maxillary/facial surgery the most you'll have to fork out is 180GBP. And that's a one-time charge, not per appointment. Most checkups or filling work range between 16~80 GBP (if & only if you can afford it) & it goes without saying, that fee is without insurance.

...This may be true for me...

You might want to update that stereotype, brits generally have healthier teeth than Americans (at least for kids). Other than that, there is no data to allow a proper comparison.

[–]Xalibu 0

Well actually many countries with long histories of winemaking can and still do ice and or water down their wine. So not really an American thing.

Well shit, are we really the only country that puts ice in our drinks frequently? I definitely do. Just not wine or whatever, that's foolish.

I once heard someone in a TV show saying "Iced water", is that a thing? I'm curious.

Yes. If you visit almost any restaurant and ask for water, you'll likely be given a cup of water with ice in it. The same really goes for any beverage. Not all restaurants do this, but most do.

One thing I've noticed is that Europeans will serve cold bottled water more often, which doesn't need ice. Our water generally just comes from a tap and isn't cold, so most prefer ice in it to drinking warm water.

generally just comes from a tap and isn't cold, so most prefer ice in it to drinking warm water.

Ah that makes much more sense.

Thank you :)

My mom and grandmother do that, but mainly in white zinfandel so that barely counts as wine.

Cubans put coca cola in red wine. That is a thing.

Kalimotxo is delicious. It's like cherry coke that gets you drunk.

Grew up in a german small town. As teenagers, we did that too.

It's gross

Its mostly old women that do it.

It's not really a thing but to each their own, of course some people will get really snooty about it though.

Cheap white wine in the summer heat... Other than that, no.

I've seen people do it before here in the U.S. but not very often. Typically the people I've seen put ice in their wine aren't big on wine and certainly weren't purists--they liked their wine sweet and light-bodied. Personally I'm not a fan of drinking it with ice, but hey, to each his own own.

I am American and drink boxed wine. Never added ice though, but who cares?

[–]PM_ME_UR_COCK_GIRL 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yes. It's not like champagne with ice in it has become a popular poolside drink in France or anything.

Or the wine was on the rack, not in the fridge where it should have been, and there are days when you don't WANT the red, you want the damn white wine!

LPT: freeze grapes so your wine doesn't water down.

Or use whiskey stones.

Yup! I still need to buy a new set of those.

So put it in the freezer for 10 minutes. Have some DECENCY

Avez-vous déjà été aux Etats?

I'm an American and I consider putting ice in wine to be a cardinal sin.

I only know americans, and some of them put ice in white wine

I have a handful friends who put ice in their wine, but they are all Quebecois.

I am Québécois and I have never seen anyone put a cube of ice in regular wine (not including vermouth and stuff like that).

I only mentioned Quebec to point out they weren't American not to conjecture that it is a cultural phenomenon. Being an Acadian from Northern Maine, I have never seen this outside of those few friends.

Seriously what the fuck is that shit. I know people complain about this reddit being snobby but you have to draw the line somewhere. Hate these pretentious posts trying to look fancy when it's a salad and an ice cube in a glass of wine.

[–]lol_admins_are_dumb 18ポイント19ポイント  (2子コメント)

Hate these pretentious posts trying to look fancy when it's a salad and an ice cube in a glass of wine.

Oh the irony

Well he did say you have to draw the line somewhere so I guess that's where he's drawing the line

[–]lol_admins_are_dumb 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

You really don't have to draw the line anywhere, you could just let people eat what they want instead of trying to inject your opinion everywhere it doesn't belong :P

You realize you're being pretentious for mocking OP's manner of drinking wine, right? I personally think wine with ice is disgusting but come on dude... to each his own.

I get a lot of this at my job. Mostly women who want to drop a couple cubes in their white wine. One time I had a dude ask me to chill a bottle of Pinot Noir and that threw me off

Pinot Noir should be drank at around 55* to *60 . So unless you live in a very cold house, it is not a good idea to serve it at room temperature. You should definitely chill it15 to 20 minutes in the fridge before drinking it.

I didn't even know people disliked cubes in their white wine until now. I only drink wine with women and hard liquor or beer with men and the women I hang out with always put cubes in their white wine.

I make wine for a living in the very County that Sauvignon blanc is from, and I endorse enjoying your wine however you fucking want to enjoy it. Plus it's not like he's "ruining" anything special. That Sauvignon blanc goes for like 8 bucks a bottle around here.

Where do I say he ruins it? I just wasn't sure if that was what it was and asked the question. "Is that a cube of ice in your wine???" I was more surprised then anything else.

Three question marks for emphasis? Lol you know what you wanted people to infer from your question.

It's pretty common in Switzerland. Called "Gespritzter" which comes in two varieties: dry = watered down with mineral water (with gas) and sweet = with added lemonade. It's really refreshing in summer.

And he's eating his meal with a desert fork
