Well played! The exact thing I was going to do. If only it were a scotch.

Does it make me an alcoholic to have assumed that was whiskey and a bottle of wine he was going to drink after?

Not at all I thought it was whiskey at first myself but the wine bottle beside it had me wondering what it was doing there. Other then just hoping to be drank as an after meal refreshment.

Yeah... something about the ice cube makes the wine look even more depressing.

It just tells you that he hadn't planned on drinking tonight, so the bottle was warm.

That's why you buy an ice coozie for that badboy.

Fume Blanc all day, e'ryday

If you like Fumé Blanc, then you should try Sauvignon Blanc.

I would've made the bottle bigger. Looks like it's just a split.

This whole meal is pissing everyone off. Good job /u/mfinity

People seem to be in rage mode today.

Today? Only reason I come to the comments on here is to read the salt.

There's a Chinese saying describing a dish being oversalted as if "you killed the salt vendor". (You killed the salt vendor and robbed all of his salt, thus applying it to food generously) /r/Food is basically a salt vendor massacre all day every day.

Ellen Pao needs to get in here and make this a safe place!

I don't think I've ever seen so many people nitpick a dish so much. It's almost impressive.

It's sad. I've never seen this sub as my main account was made before this was a default. I've started checking this place out though since I love food and cooking myself and I can't believe people are this pedantic. When you're cooking for yourself it's a personal experience and you should have it the way you enjoy it. Or at least that's how I see it.

That's why I've been finding other food subreddits. Nicer people. I dunno, people here seem to complain "YOU'RE THE EATING THE WAY I AM!!"

Then you haven't been to the full English or shooter sandwich threads. They're just attrocious.

Or charcuterie or steak threads.

ITT: ICE IN WINE ZOMFG WUT

In response to some FAQs:

Q: Who puts ice in wine?

A: OP.

Q: Why would you even do that?

A: To make the wine cold.

Q: But won't the wine get watery?

A: Yes.

Q: Eww, gross.

A: OP can drink his wine whatever damn way he pleases.

Q: How can I show all the internet people how cultured and snobby I am?

A: Try criticizing or shaming OP for the way he enjoys his wine!

EDIT: Forgot one.

Q: Who puts wine in a whiskey glass?

A: OP.

Automatically read with 'who stole the cookie from the cookie jar' inflections. 10/10 would chant again.

People have been putting water in their wines for millenia. Also, anecdote to give a heart attack to the purists in this thread: young Spaniards have a drink called Kalimotxo which consists of half red wine half coca cola.

Everyone knows cultured people put frozen grapes in their wine to make it cold. Fuck sake people!!!!

I only drink late-harvest raisin wine. Wouldn't want those grapes to be too watery, because as we all know water is wine's worst enemy.

that smoked tobasco sauce is the bomb

Slap that shit on a Chipotle burrito and you have a meal for the hispanic gods.

*Tabasco (sorry its driving me insane...!)

Is that a cube of ice in your wine???

When I bartended, I had a woman come in all the time and do that. I asked why one time. In short, she was an alcoholic, and couldn't stop. So, by icing the wine, she felt it made it last longer, and diluted the effects. She was also petite, and felt the extra volume of the ice cube melting made her 'full' faster.

I didn't say it made sense :)

I mean that's actually all logical. It just wouldn't make a very significant difference.

I know people that water down their own booze (for these same reasons). I believe the difference is significant.

Nothing wrong with watering down wine. The Romans did it. Europeans do it sometimes. I've caught friends and relies doing it with sweet wines.

Nothing wrong with watering down wine. The Romans did it.

Yet another proof of the decline of the American Empire.

Seriously. The French will do it for kids, that's about it. There is a french expression: mettre de l'eau dans son vin, to put water in your wine, that means: to compromise.

Well, so long as you have some regular folks to look down your nose at that should keep you happy. So I'd say it's a win-win all round.

I'd say it's a win-win all round

More like a "vin-vin" all round

Drinking poison will bring down the empire faster than watering down the poison.

Yes it is. It was a bit of a thrown together meal. The vodka glass became the wine glass. Less dishes, and I was fine with it. The wife was out so my culinary etiquette took a back seat to pragmatism.

I know that glass, and I'm pretty sure all of my cups (that aren't plastic) came from bars or booze people bought me at holidays, so I'm assuming it came with some beverage or another. =D

People put ice in sangria all the time. Ancient Greeks and Romans even diluted their wine with water. Relax.

Watering down wine can actually sometimes improve the taste.

That said... OP is pairing a $15 bottle with smoky tabasco sauce?

OP is pairing a $15 bottle with smoky tabasco sauce?

Sounds like a good idea.

Yes it is... He's clearly out of his mind, or american.

I'm American and drink wine all the time. I've never heard of anyone putting ice in wine. Is that a thing?

Yeah same here. I don't really know why Americans were called out.

I think Americans are stereotyped for "putting ice in our drinks."

To be fair, we probably do that more than most.

I've heard that folks in the UK don't like ice in their drinks because their teeth are so rotten and sensitive that drinking cold beverages is painful.

While in reality the percentage of Americans with tooth decay is actually much higher than in the UK. Mate.

Stop ruining the stereotype-off with your logic.

I feel like using 12 years olds skews le data. I make fun of British adults, not kids!

Bad teeth became a British stereotype back during WWII - but after the war, Britain started their universal healthcare and dental systems, where the most you'll pay (per my British husband) is about 60 pound for ANY dental work, and the vast majority -all essential work, that is - is absolutely free.

That being said, Britain's culture isn't so superficial as American's in regards to teeth - only about 3% of the population have had teeth whitening, for instance. They just don't consider the uniformity of everyone having a perfect white smile to be as important as Americans feel it is.

Isn't the stereotype based more upon orthodontic care and stained teeth from tea drinking? It seems like a vast majority of US kids gets braces for even minor crooked teeth. Cosmetic procedures such a whitening and veneers also seem more common in the US.

No. Orthodontic treatment also comes under the NHS free proviso for children up to age 18. My parents could've been millionares- wouldn't matter, still free till age 18 for the patient. I was a recipient of it myself, along with the surgery I required beforehand. After which it falls back in to the set rate cost of everything else, provided if (and only if) you earn more than the set poverty line.

US servicemen stationed here during said war saw the poor healthcare our armed forces had at the time, plus grim diets & shitty rationing didn't help our poor service-blokes, and took it home with them, and that's where it started.

Today? I'd give my right tit (and the left too, tbh) to be living back home in the UK so I can get my free / set-rate dental. My missus is nearly correct: for seriously major maxillary/facial surgery the most you'll have to fork out is 180GBP. And that's a one-time charge, not per appointment. Most checkups or filling work range between 16~80 GBP (if & only if you can afford it) & it goes without saying, that fee is without insurance.

...This may be true for me...

[–]Xalibu 0

Well actually many countries with long histories of winemaking can and still do ice and or water down their wine. So not really an American thing.

My mom and grandmother do that, but mainly in white zinfandel so that barely counts as wine.

Cubans put coca cola in red wine. That is a thing.

Kalimotxo is delicious. It's like cherry coke that gets you drunk.

Grew up in a german small town. As teenagers, we did that too.

It's gross

Its mostly old women that do it.

It's not really a thing but to each their own, of course some people will get really snooty about it though.

Cheap white wine in the summer heat... Other than that, no.

I've seen people do it before here in the U.S. but not very often. Typically the people I've seen put ice in their wine aren't big on wine and certainly weren't purists--they liked their wine sweet and light-bodied. Personally I'm not a fan of drinking it with ice, but hey, to each his own own.

[–]PM_ME_UR_COCK_GIRL 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yes. It's not like champagne with ice in it has become a popular poolside drink in France or anything.

Or the wine was on the rack, not in the fridge where it should have been, and there are days when you don't WANT the red, you want the damn white wine!

So put it in the freezer for 10 minutes. Have some DECENCY

Avez-vous déjà été aux Etats?

I'm an American and I consider putting ice in wine to be a cardinal sin.

I only know americans, and some of them put ice in white wine

Seriously what the fuck is that shit. I know people complain about this reddit being snobby but you have to draw the line somewhere. Hate these pretentious posts trying to look fancy when it's a salad and an ice cube in a glass of wine.

[–]lol_admins_are_dumb 18ポイント19ポイント  (2子コメント)

Hate these pretentious posts trying to look fancy when it's a salad and an ice cube in a glass of wine.

Oh the irony

Well he did say you have to draw the line somewhere so I guess that's where he's drawing the line

[–]lol_admins_are_dumb 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

You really don't have to draw the line anywhere, you could just let people eat what they want instead of trying to inject your opinion everywhere it doesn't belong :P

You realize you're being pretentious for mocking OP's manner of drinking wine, right? I personally think wine with ice is disgusting but come on dude... to each his own.

I get a lot of this at my job. Mostly women who want to drop a couple cubes in their white wine. One time I had a dude ask me to chill a bottle of Pinot Noir and that threw me off

Pinot Noir should be drank at around 55* to *60 . So unless you live in a very cold house, it is not a good idea to serve it at room temperature. You should definitely chill it15 to 20 minutes in the fridge before drinking it.

I was going to take a cooking for one class, but the teacher killed himself.

Was at a house party in Germany and people kept referencing this. Then they put it on and all of them laughed throughout its entirety.

Yep that's an entirely accurate representation of what we do. On another note: the video is blocked in germany ;)

I never knew a simple picture of a meal could inspire so much criticism. I need to go back to the uplifting post about the kid's 10th birthday party.

[–]juice_of_the_mango 21ポイント22ポイント  (3子コメント)

Are you going to put tobasco on your salad?

Does sprinkling cilantro on top of chicken make it a salad?

I see something that isn't a shade of brown! IT MUST BE A SALAD!

Is that cilantro? I was desperately hoping it was parsley, because then it looked damned tasty. I likes me some cilantro, but this would be way too much for my palate.

I'm not sure I can make that determination without involving more senses than is presently possible.

So, no screen licking then?

No. My understanding of the functionality of my screen is that such an observation technique would give no information regarding the content being displayed thereon.

That would explain the complete failure of my scratch and sniff website.

However, this may not stop me from doing so and using my imagination when the visually confirmed contents appear to be satisfying to the other senses.

Does cilantro and parsley really taste that much different?

Very, very much so, unless you're a genetic wonderment that can't taste cilantro.

I can't remember the taste difference right now.

Cilantro = soapy, strongly herbal

Parsley = arugula-ish, kind of green tasting, very neutral

That's for the wine silly.

That Chipotle Tabasco is mighty tasty...I might kill half a bottle on one burrito.

Why do I keep taking a wrong turn on all Imgur pictures, is there something wrong or is just me?

Is that coriander as garnish? My worst enemy....

Interestingly, it seems some people love the taste of coriander, and others hate it. It's just a quirk of our taste buds.

It's genetic. There's a particular chemical that, for the 10% of people who can taste it, tastes like soap/metal. Most folks are lucky in that we can't sense that chemical - it has zero taste in it for us.

can't have tom yum thale, kaeng som, or pangek without chopped fresh coriander leaves. the sourness of those dishes mixes really well with coriander leaves.

It looks like it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but when talking about the leaves you should use cilantro and not coriander. I believe coriander is used to name the dried seeds of the cilantro.

In England coriander is the leaves too

Well that's just confusing. Coriander (Seeds) are much different than Coriander (Leaves) (Cilantro)

[–]lol_admins_are_dumb 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

They say seeds. Coriander seeds and coriander leaves. It's not really any more confusing than calling one planet 2 different names, and inconsistently so since we (Americans) call celery seed celery seed after all. This isn't strictly limited to the UK either -- most of the world calls it coriander. Indian people are the ones that I'm thinking of most

Cilantro grows from coriander seeds.

I think the cj4k meant they're quite different taste-wise, sort of like celery and celery seed.

can someone post any easy to make meals. i just moved out im 21 and i don't know how to cook anything besides cereal.

It really is a shame there are no recipes on the whole internet. Oh well, good luck with life.

While people giving you specific recipes to try is great and all, I found the best way to learn was watching Good Eats (Alton Brown) and videos of Gordon Ramsay Recipes on YouTube. The Ultimate Cookery Course is great.

There are a few basics you'll eventually learn and master. From there your options are limitless.

[–]lol_admins_are_dumb 0ポイント1ポイント  (4子コメント)

This meal is super easy. Step 1: cut your raw chicken into bite-sized pieces. Step 2: get a pan nice and hot, at around medium to medium high heat. Step 3: salt and season the chicken, use whatever you want and tastes good for you. Step 4: cook the chicken in the hot pan, use a bit of oil. It will stick at first, that's fine. After it unsticks flip the pieces to cook the other side. If you have a lot of bits stuck to the bottom of your pan, add a tiny bit of water and swish it around, it will pull most of that stuff up off the pan. Cook for a minute to evap most of the water and reduce it to a "sauce". I like to add a little soy sauce just before I do this, or red wine.

The greens, you can serve the chicken over raw, or just steam them a bit. Tomatoes served raw or you can bake them a few minutes to get them mushy and tender.

I'm really not sure what the things on the left side of the plate are.

Things on the left look like black beans. Cilantro and green onions on top. I just can't figure out what is underneath the chicken. Rice? Sauteed onion?

thank you ill try to make it this weekend

Buy a crock pot. You can probably find one at your local grocery store, or on Amazon for under $50.

Chicken Taco Soup:

  • 2 or 3 chicken breasts
  • 1 can of beans, any kind
  • 1 can of corn
  • 1 16oz jar of salsa, any kind
  • 1 can of tomato paste
  • 1 package of taco seasoning
  • 2/3 cup quinoa.
  • 3 cups chicken broth

Put everything in the crock pot. Turn the crock pot to high for 4-6 hours or low for 8-10 hours, depending on how early in the day to start. Shred the chicken with a fork when it's done, then add the shredded chicken back into the pot.

It takes 5 minutes to throw it in and turn it on before school/work, and have a hot meal when you get home. I sprinkle some grated cheese on top and eat with with tortilla chips. It'll make enough for 8-10 meals. Cheap, easy.

thanks, im going to the store after work.

Or you could take that recipe minus the broth, get some tortillas, add some melted cheese, and make some tacos/burritos.

It looks like chicken over rice (or quinoa ) with cilantro and green onions as garnish. Served with kidney beans and cherry tomatoes.

Ferrari-Carano, nice. My dad actually worked for the Carano family and transported the model for the vineyard they were building. Story will probably get buried but I always remember it when I see the wine.

Very nice, take out the booze and you're gonna be hitting whatever weight loss goal you want.

I don't care if you put popcorn in your wine. I want your table.

The smoked chipotle Tabasco makes that whole meal.

Ouch. Shame about the tobasco instead of Frank's Red Hot.

Red kidney beans....do you guys eat those from a can always or do you cook them from the actual packaging of raw beans?

I don't wanna eat them from a can all the time because...preservatives....but when I boil the uncooked/healthier ones, they just stay hard and are uneatable even after doing it for more than half an hour.

You have to cook red beans for at least 2 hours. I usually cook them for 3 hours.

Source: I'm from New Orleans.

But I do believe the beans in this picture are black beans. Which I would also cook for several hours.

Upvoted for the controversy. Or as some would say "contravecy"

That is actually a pretty healthy dinner for one. The foodie neckbeard rage is delicious (made of clarified herb infused butter from France).

Try Red wine next time. You won't need ice.
