"Amazing genderfluid weirdo makes kid realize he's also genderfluid. Can confirm, am sparkly pants."
As soon as I saw the title, I knew the thread would be shit. /r/thathappened has been turning into TiA, and this thread proves it.
The OP posts a Tumblr screencap where a genderfluid (probably teenage) user meets kindergarten boy, who shows up in a sparkly shirt with yoga pants the next day. The responses are what you would expect.
I'm something of a LGBT supporter. I've been to PRIDE marches, I was even a member of the Gay Straight Alliance back in the late 90's during highschool. I say all that to say this. Genderfluidity is the dumbest shit I've ever heard of.
what once was known as a 'mood' is now a sexual identity. get the fuck out of here. "I feel male today." what does that even mean? more aggressive? more interested in certain topics or hobbies? or does that mean you just feel like wearing 'men's fashion'?
"I feel female today." ??????????? what is going on here. how is anybody letting people get away with some shit like this. just picking your gender whenever you want for whatever reason you want. at least transgender people are making a decision..and they've done studies that find some legit brain differences in trans people..
but gender fluid? come the fuck on. if I meet a person over the age of 24 that identifies as Gender Fluid, I am immediately walking away and never speaking to them again. +165
"I'm not bigoted, I have gay friends."
Of course, this post just opens the floodgates.
a girl i met online said she wad pan sexual and i was dissapointed because im a tupperwaresexual and we are into two different types of cook ware. +39
I don't know what's so hard to understand. Sometimes I wake up and I have a penis, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I wake up without one but then find it later, usually under the couch. I adjust my gender accordingly. +82
People can only be gender fluid at certain latitudes. Too high and they're gender solid, too low and they're gender gaseous. Maybe you just don't live in an appropriately moderate climate to have experienced gender in its fluid state. +14
This shit is just like the attack helicopter copypasta.
Gender fluid is basically reinforcing traditional gender roles. I'm surprised no one's called them out on that. +35
I think the real problem is people don't know the difference between biological sex and gender. Gender is a social construct and is used to define certain roles for biological sex. Genderfluid most definitely enforces gender roles and goes against everything feminism is for. +4
"No, YOU'RE the real problem. >:("
You just know the second guy complains about third-wave feminism "ruining" the movement.
I'm sure this was written by a 15-year-old that was experiencing the requisite identity crisis of high school and she's clutching to this lifestyle, but treating it as a subculture. It's like when a 9th grader reads a Scott Pilgrim book and starts blathering, "Oh, I'm such a comic book nerd! People wnt 2 make fun of me but I love the stuff I love! I'm just a nerd! #geeklyfe."
The entirety of these types of posts comes off as passive mockery of the life choices of others. I'm sure in a few years this girl will be into video games, or punk rock, or bowling and she'll be posting stuff like, "then the little kid wore a Portal 2 shirt aND EVERYONE ACCEPTED IT." People that so badly want to be unique that they'll cling to, and get militant about, any cause they think might make them seem "subversive" or "edgy." It's sad that the online presence of legitimate lifestyle is being treated like some teenage craze. +15
TIL gender identity is just a teenage fad.
And since it's Reddit, it's always time to shit on trans people.
Yes, but if you do people will down vote you online because their instinct tells them that you're somehow being ignorant.
"I was born a woman but feel like a man"
How would you know? You've never been a man, you just don't identify with things that are deemed "feminine" so you assume you fall into the other camp. For some reason this makes sense to people and thinking otherwise makes you narrow-minded. +4
I've known transgender people and it still isn't clear to me that it's as cut and dry as "I was born in the wrong body". I don't see it as a rejection of gender roles, because it's much easier to simply be a masculine woman or feminine man than it is to remove your genitalia, but rather as a mental disorder caused by a hormone imbalance (most likely). The simple fact is, you can't identify as something you've never been. Being a man or a woman is more than "feeling" like a man or woman, it's not a state of mind, it's a descriptor of your sex. You can feel like a different gender, but you can't feel like a different sex. Feeling like a gender is inherently buying into what that gender represents. I can't identify as a black man, because I've never been one; I don't know what it means to be one other than going off of my stereotyped idea of what a black man is like.
Frankly, I feel nothing but pity for people who are so confused that they need to mutilate their body or subject it to potent chemicals to feel comfortable. That pity is why I don't bash transsexuals, not because I support their decisions. They don't feel right and they're doing what they can to feel better, nothing wrong with that, I just don't agree with the methods or the rationale. +1
Another fine Redditor also agrees that trans people are mentally ill.
I'm sure they're pretty reasonable. It's a complicated issue. made more complicated by the fact that not every transgender person is the same. I'm 100% sure there are some transgender people out there, that, if given a different childhood and influences, would have grown up to 100% identify with their born sex. I'm sure that there are some that need to be on certain medication for mental illness.
it's never cut and dry like people try to make it out to be. same with anything really. +8
Then posters start whining that others will think they're bigots due to Reddit's "hyper-progressive atmosphere".
Not all of the poop is highly upvoted, but I'm sure there will be more in the future since the thread is still young.
