Even though NYCFC are the team to hate in MLS right now, you can't deny they are bringing attention to the league.

Also, that LA v NYCFC match in August just got a bit more interesting

Especially if LA get Dos Santos

Yep, absolutely. That match actually was moved up by two hours recently. My guess is because it allows the UK audience to see Gerrard v Lampard again

Smart decision! Maybe the EPL should consider playing their games at 1 in the morning so that I don't have to wake up so early!

Is there a way that three teams can play each other so that we can get LA v NYCFC v Orlando with Kaka+Chicharito?

MLS all-star game should start looking like a European testimonial match pretty soon.

[–]San Jose EarthquakesSomeCruzDude 1

Wonder if they'll be in the ASG even though Lampard, Gerrard, Pirlo, etc. will play less than half a season.

If not, definitely happy to see them all next year at the ASG in San Jose...

[–]Triig 1

All Star voting is already going on for this year. Unless they're some of the players the coach puts in, there's no way they'll be in.

[–]United StatesOutcomedawolves 26

Only if Orlando cashes in their Money in the Bank during the LA vs NYCFC match

Waiting through that grueling match before taking on the champion! Devious but ingenious!

On this day I see clearly

[–]West Ham UnitedDirtD4er 6

I'm sure LA could get the rules changed to allow it

Indeed there is

Sorry about the Norwegian.

Why are they the team to hate? I'm trying to get into MLS but I don't know what team to pick and thought about NYCFC because I'm from NY.

[–]New York City FCToTheBattery 173

NY sports team + owned by CFG + Yankee Stadium. We're pretty easy targets tbf.

Doesn't matter to me, it's been great supporting this team so far. Just got back from Montreal, amazing day out.

what is CFG?

City Football Group, also owners of Manchester City and Melbourne City. The biggest issue is they have in a way become "Man City Jr." or a feeder club, which is why many of their own fans hate the ownership.

[–]Eintracht FrankfurtAMeierFussballgott 18

What did they expect though? Same with the red bull teams. All feeder teams for Leipzig.

[–]New York Red Bullsdgmz 48

biggest and maybe only example (since they've only been around for half a season now) is how they handled Frank Lampard's signing. marketed as a signing for NYCFC, supposed to arrive on day one of our season (which starts in early spring). instead seemingly illegal moves were made to extend his contract with MCFC so that he could stay with them. turns out FL never had a contract with NYC.

Thierry, Cahill, Marquez, Rost, Juan Pablo... all came to the club when announced. no trickery.

Also many of our exports never went out to RB Salzburg or Leipzig. If anything RB Salzburg gave us a floundering waste of time in Ernst Obster a few years back.

EDIT: I do not know how the relationship between high profile/up and coming players are handled between the german and austrian red bull sides.

You can't support them. But i'm sure you're all well aware of that by now.

Doesn't help to be heavily affiliated with Man City either. They're taking on the hate that Man City have built up in the last few years from the start.

You may not be able to support a financial group, but you can sure as hell hate one.

When mentioning CFG he's mentioning City Football Group, aka Man City Owners.

Isn't it MFG?

I mean, that's who we are rooting for anyway! ;)

[–]AEK Athensoodja 1

What's it like watching the games from the outfield bleachers, though? Every time I see a game on TV it just feels claustrophobic and weird.

The Lampard fiasco and the fact they play in a baseball stadium are the main reasons why. But if you're from New York, that's more than enough reason to support them!

What about Red Bulls?

Red Bulls are a different beast... Of course the name/ownership doesn't help, but they do a decent amount right. They have a nice stadium, and for the most part are pretty well ran, but after Henry and Cahill left things went downhill on the pitch.

Also, the fact they actually play in New Jersey and not New York leads to some hate.

the fact they actually play in New Jersey and not New York leads to some hate.

That explains it.

Well not really there are other NYC based sports teams who play NJ but are NY, like Jets and Giants

I know someone already answered you, but i'd like to point out that these are politics mostly out of RBNY's hands. Thing is, Giants stadium was created in Jersey because it was genuinely a good location for a sports team, as far as traffic and commute go. Giants and Jets only moved in after a good tenure in the City, but they never identified with their surroundings (not until they built Meadowlands and they started giving back to their (local) community. The Red Bulls/Metrostars were always based in New Jersey, and were always keen on moving between stadiums in and around North Jersey. Their first stadium was the Giants stadium, and once Red Bulls really got motivated, they built their own stadium even deeper in the heart of Jersey, even greatly improving the area (Newark and Harrison). The Red Bulls are Jersey's first real answer to a serious local sports team (bar: the Devils). (because: y'know, the Nets moved to Brooklyn the first chance they got).

If you want to see what standard every New Yorker wants the Red Bulls to meet, look no further than the Cosmos, who are not only out of their element financially, and in the supporter front, they're still doing everything in their power to finance a local stadium in the Queens/Long Island area. And now that the New York Islanders are moving back to Brooklyn (Barclay's Center), the Cosmos may actually reach their goal. (i should note: Raul plays for them now).

New York City FC did in half a season, what the Red Bulls should've done a long time ago: they gave back and welcomed NYC's community. They've improved the football/soccer fields in and around the city (and Brooklyn/Queens), donated to local schools and created programs all over the city, as opposed to the Red Bulls who only really held camps around North Jersey. Now kids in New York City can play in serious leagues and be in the scouts' spotlight, while genuinely enjoying the sport. IMO though, what we really need is a title. I know that's way too much to ask for NYCFC, as they're new, but I have a gut feeling that its only a season or two away.

And yes, as dirty as it sounds (because money is involved), once New York City has its first soccer parade, MLS might just get huge. (don't underestimate how populated and proud NYC can get).

The Red Bulls can't compete with NYCFC as far as being a local NYC team goes. They kind of can't even compete with the Cosmos.

[–]New York Red Bullsbyrdan 1

RBNY does plenty of youth soccer work across both states including very prominently in the Lower East Side every year, and in any case, the average new nycfc fan has no idea about that kind of work being done by either club.

NYCFC has been a huge marketing success so far for three reasons:

  1. they launched a really sharp brand identity right after a World Cup,
  2. they are associated with two other clubs that hold cultural cache with two important groups: soccer fans who already respect English soccer and the DPs they brought over and Yankees fans who are willing/excited to check out soccer in familiar environs,
  3. and most importantly, NYCFC wasn't burdened by the residual 90s MLS brand association. you see this across the entire league: original, and even successful on the field franchises haven't caught on in the same way as teams such as Toronto, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, or even Montreal, who were able to enter into their sports market post-Beckham, when the league was more respected, millions of American kids had finally started watching the world cups and playing FIFA, and the sport as a whole was no longer viewed as similarly to arena football.

What is definitely certain pertaining to number three, is that the Red Bulls botched this opportunity to rebrand to catch more of the city, I won't say otherwise. but it's not just because the stadium is in New Jersey, it's because they failed to overcome these branding factors successfully, like SKC did with aplomb. hell, they barely even promoted the team at all, not to mention within the city. City is actively discovering that building a stadium inside the city limits isn't as easily done as said. They have, however, discovered that if you partner with the Yankees and make a Times Square tour bus brochure your media guide, that people will love it. I'm very curious to see how this transfers over when city finally gets its own stadium that will inevitably be further out than Yankee Stadium, and perhaps as intimidating as even the gasp PATH train.

and the idea that the Red Bulls should look to the Cosmos is laughable, since their obstinance in negotiating has actively kept them in the second division, when they by all means could have been the second New York franchise themselves if they had accepted the same parity terms that even Sheikh Mansour found palatable. and in any case, slowly moving to build an okay stadium out in Belmont is in no way more ambitious than actually building a world-class stadium in Harrison.

tl;dr a team with a stadium in Harrison, New Jersey can compete to be a New York local team if it gets its branding more in order, and continues to have a couple of winning seasons while City is still homeless and the Yankees association becomes less strong

edit: format

[–]New York City FCperpetual_student 6

The Giants played in NY for 50 years and the Jets for 20 before moving to East Rutherford. RB never played home matches in NY, even as the Metrostars.

[–]Real JuventudTHIS_IS_SO_HILARIOUS 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

And someone like me are waiting for them to use New Jersey, the fact is we have no control over this matter.

I suppose if you want a like-for-like replacement there isn't really one in Juve. Maybe if they can tempt Verratti away from P$G.

[–]New York Red Bullsdgmz 3

lampard and pirlo are gonna need some time to adjust to this league where everyone is in mid season form while they are still getting in it. the mid season signing slump has hit every big signing for the MLS. not saying that they'll be pushovers, but i'd be hesitant to say they'll be dominant out of the gate.

Honest thought: the 'retirement league' jeers seem to have...lessened this season.

Is that because players are consistently coming here now and people are recognizing MLS isnt completely awful, or the joke is just dead?

[–]Hamburger SVSvorky 89

Okay, honest answer from the outside:

MLS isn't called a retirement league because it's awful, it's because there's a disconnect between level of play an pay.

Pirlo wasn't signed because he's the most effective use of that money from a footballing standpoint. You could get a couple good players for his kind of wages instead of a legend who is frankly past it and would end up with a better team. But that's not possible with these weird designated player rules.

He's there because he's a big name and MLS is trying to get people to watch. And he isn't going because it's the highest level he can still play it, he's going because no club in Europe is going to pay him as much anymore. Because again, it doesn't make sense purely on a footballing basis.

So the club signed him for his name rather than ability, and he's going for money rather than level of competition. Football takes a back seat to business for the first time in his career, hence "retirement league".

Not to say money doesn't rule football in Europe as well, but almost universally a better pay goes hand in hand with a higher level of competition. so it's not as much of an issue.

It's a catch-22. MLS has money to throw around, but young talented players don't want to come here, and if they do then people complain (look at the countless fans crying for Chica to NOT come to MLS). If they can bring in a player with talent that also increases viewers, then it's a good deal.

And you have the wrong idea about it being business before competition. If he comes in with that attitude, he will be hated by the fans. He has to come in with full passion and willingness to compete. Beckham had fans jumping into the field to get in his face and yell at him when he was treating it more as business. It wasn't until he got serious that people appreciated him. So yes, his decisicon to come here may have been because of the money, but he will quickly learn this isn't a retirement league: play seriously or go home.

I think the Gio/Chicha scenario will actually be the first signs that the gamble is working. If you can convince both of those guys to come then it means two things: 1.) Money is really hard to say no to and 2.) Young Talent is now a part of the MLS. Get those two players here and the rest will follow. It's a bit different from getting Bradley and Dempsey because they're actually American and it's their domestic league. But if Gio/Chicha come to the MLS then you're going to have a TON more Mexican youngsters starting to look at the MLS more seriously.

TON more Mexican youngsters starting to look at the MLS more seriously.

While I agree with everything you said. i question if MLS is ready to start to compete with LigaMX for players especially if they are not DP's. My understanding is the LigaMX is the best paying league in the hemisphere and average wages blow MLS out of the water (except for DP's). So unless these youngish Mexicans are established National team stars that can command DP money they will be staying in LigaMX or Europe.

Well these players could still do it in Europe. Pirlo was in the UCL final for gods sake. I think it's a retirement league still. Just it has supporters here now, where as the middle east/chinese teams don't.

I've been to MLS games and Chinese Super league games and some of the Chinese fans can be absolutely crazy. Beijing Guoan sells out their stadium regularly, and Chengdu blades was pretty packed for the one game I went. Just because it's not top level football doesn't mean teams don't have supporters. In fact, compared to the MLS, I'd say that despite the footballing level of the Chinese teams being lower, the fans are much more like their European counterparts (for better and for worse).

I don't think the MLS is completely awful, but it's largely a retirement league in my eyes. I mean Pirlo is joining the club at the age of 36.

All three Inter, Juve and Milan vs NYCFC.

We will miss you Pirlo!!

[–]FC Santa ClausWallballs 5

Their midfield will be good, at least

Who needs defense when you have Lampard and Pirlo?

they also have Iraola and Angelino coming in to shelter the defense, as well as Tefu Mashmaite from the Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa

a Wingert, Facey, Iraola and Angelino back four isnt terrible

EDIT: South Africa, not America

...goodbye my love.

sobs uncontrollably

[–]Bayern MünchenRCiancimino 21

I wish people wouldn't shit on the MLS so much....We are trying to build the sport...it's not going to happen overnight.

[–]Real Salt LakeAflimacon 6

I don't think Bayern Munich talk about the MLS much.

Goodbye and thank you, Mozart <3

[–]United Statesaidsfarts 7

I still don't think it has sunk in that I live in the same town as Pirlo, Lampard, and Villa.

[–]Juventuswhats_the_deal22 3ポイント4ポイント  (2子コメント)

Right? Villa looked at my friends house to rent his assistant came to my office for Villas vehicle registration. I hope these guys pass around the good word to each other!

Pirlo and Lampard in the Midfield feeding balls to David Villa. Would have been interesting 5 years ago!

[–]ArsenalHoney_Otter 72ポイント73ポイント  (19子コメント)

Pirlo and Lampard in midfield. The rest of their midfielders had better have some pretty good legs on them...

Diskerund is getting horse lungs implanted and an extra heart as we speak.

[–]New England Revolutionbwadams12 22

Doesn't matter when the pitch is like 80 yards long.

[–]New York City FCNYCsoccerfan 35

NYCFC field size 110 yards x 70 yards

New England field size 115 yards x 75 yards

Oh the humanity!

And before you go and say "at least we don't play in a a baseball stadium" I'll remind you that New England has played in a NFL stadium (on turf) without any public transportation links for 13 years.

[–]New England Revolutionbwadams12 28

NYCFC field is officially the smallest allowable, and it's probably not actually even that big. That said, I love watching games at Yankee Stadium because it's like a pinball game. The only real gripe I have is that the camera angle sucks.

And you will never, ever, hear me say one thing positive about Gillette as a soccer venue.

[–]New York City FCNYCsoccerfan 7

I can agree with the camera angles. I have season tickets so I don't watch the games on TV unless it's a replay.

My god when I watched the replay I thought the angles were shit. Why they haven't set up a camera stand somewhere reasonable is beyond me.

I feel sorry for people who have to watch it at home.

[–]Real Salt LakeAflimacon 2

Yankee Stadium is a bad soccer venue. The fact that Gillette Stadium is also a bad soccer venue does not make the first statement any less valid.

Most soccer-specific stadiums have a pitch size of 120x75.

shut up it will still be interesting

Just a more deliberately paced level of interesting.

One could argue that anything Pirlo deliberatery does is deliberately very deliberately paced.

There's a lot of trophies between those 3. Hopefully they'll get more.

Juventus and NYCFC should play a friendly or something. Would be fun and I'm sure they'd draw a big crowd.

[–]LiverpoolMIkey_F 5ポイント6ポイント  (2子コメント)

Another big signing for the MLS... What about the A-League? :(

[–]LiverpoolTsing_Tao 5ポイント6ポイント  (12子コメント)

I wonder what the incentive was to go to NYCFC? Maybe the challenge to help build a new team from the ground up?

[–]Evertonmidnight_thunder 29ポイント30ポイント  (9子コメント)

Living in NY. He can live it up, all in relative anonymity. Henry specifically stated how much he liked walking down the street, and only being recognized every once in a while.

It's not that they're not recognized, it's that seeing someone famous walking down the street isn't really special in New York. You go about your business, and let them go about theirs.

[–]Juventuswhats_the_deal22 7ポイント8ポイント  (0子コメント)

Then he's got another thing coming if he crosses paths with me in the street.

[–]LiverpoolTsing_Tao 7ポイント8ポイント  (5子コメント)

Thats a pretty good reason :) NY is filled with stars!

Money most likely. Also, no Pirlo, no party. New York seems as good a place as any to party.

Question - Is he still aiming to play for Italy during Euro 2016?

Ladies and gentlemen, America just became a little classier

Nice. I'm definitely going to some NYCFC games now.

Great day for American Soccer!

LA vs NYCFC is going to be awesome! Gerrard, Keane, Zardes, Lampard, Mix, Pirlo and Villa.... so many great players and legends!

Honestly I just want to go see an NYCFC game so bad now. 30 mins away but it feels like 3 years.

We will never forget your magnificent beard, My dear Pirlo.

I kinda wished he signed somewhere other than NYC. Say, Chicago.
