Trivia fact: Ottawa was the team in Boston that day, the game got delayed to the end of the season.

I remember a Leafs and Sens game Ottawa was pushed a couple of weeks after the shooting at Parliament. To a Sunday, I think.

And we got to play your first game after the shooting. It was powerful to watch

True. Regardless of the team, I'm glad that time and time again, franchises from many sports honour their place in the city culture and pay tribute to local tragedies, and tragedies in other cities, too. Like for the Boston Marathon bombing, I really liked how Philly had the "From one tough city to another" billboards, and for the Ottawa shooting, that Oh Canada at the Penguins-Stars game.

If you look at that picture of Messier again, you'll notice the Rangers' jersey says "New York" instead of "Rangers." This was a one-time-only jersey as well—both teams auctioned off their game jerseys for 9/11-related charities.

[–]JefflerCanada - IIHF 24

Technically, the Rangers did have a "NEW YORK" jersey in that style in the 80's, but yes, it was a one-off for its time.

I know, but if you want to get really technical, it was still a rare occurrence to see the Rangers in those jerseys… at MSG, at least. When they regularly wore "New York"-emblazoned blue jerseys from 1979 to 1987, they were away jerseys.

[–]OnlyFactsNoContextMTL - NHL 5

It's pretty normal in sports to have the name of your town on the away jersey and the franchise name on the home jersey.

I thought we'd see more interesting jersey changes when the NHL went from White at Home to White on the road.

He left a bad taste in their mouth after his time there and it's well deserved. He replaced Trevor Linden as captain who was a fan favorite, demanded to wear the number they had unofficially retired and I'm sure I'm missing a few things. He was a great hockey player and a hell of a leader with New York, but he did not do a great job in his time with Vancouver.

Ran over Linden in the playoffs when he was already down and injured. Replaced Linden as captain, demanded a retired number, played like he didn't give a fuck, didn't lead at all, was personal close friends with the GM and other management, forced Linden and other players out, had a secretive deal with the team where he would earn a bonus if team revenue went up a certain amount during his time there, later sued the Canucks for $6 million. He's a greedy self centered piece of shit and we fucking hate his filthy guts. I'm sure i missed a few things too.

He sued because of a clause that stated that he'd get money if the franchise grew in worth. This clause ended in 2002 (If I recall correctly), and so he was paid 6 million because Naslund/Bertuzzi/Morrison were amazingly fun to watch.

IIRC those types of clauses are now illegal in the latest CBA.

Hmmmm. Agree to disagree.

You don't think Bertuzzi (before the whole Moore incident) was fun to watch? The guy would have two defenders on him, be stick handling with one hand allowing Naslund to get open to wire his shot from the half boards?

Bertuzzi was the penultimate power forward of the time and I'd like to know your reasoning why not?

[–]ClaudeLemieuxCOL - NHL 1

Because of the Moore incident. And his absolute joke of a penalty

Which didn't happen until 2 years after the Messier clause ended (which is what we're talking about). Up until that incident he was incredibly fun to watch because it was so much talent.

And Todd, though his NHL punishment should have been more severe was crucified in the public eye. He was vilified for months afterwards in the Vancouver press alone. And I believe that other players should have shared the blame considering the dogpile that happened immediately after had to have had some effect on the outcome of Moore's injury.

I was working with Steve and Dominic's uncle at the time, and he let on that the family thought the same as well.

Here is a Rangers fan take on it, as someone who lived through it and loved Messier when he lead the team to the Cup (I was 12 when they won it):

Messier very famously lead the Rangers to their first Cup in forever. He was also very famously a leader: not only with the Rangers but he was known for it with the Oilers and even got a Cup without Gretzky after he was traded to LA.

After the 97 season, Messier's contract was up and the Rangers didn't think he was worth over $6.5m per season (he wanted $20m for three years). They had also just signed Gretzky and Pat LaFontaine, so they thought they were fine with centers. Most fans at the time wanted Messier to come back and there wasn't a salary cap either so it's not like them throwing money at him (something they did often) would have had any real downside.

The Canucks, meanwhile, were on a downswing. After their Cup run in '94 (they were the seven seed) they had gotten swept in the second round the following season, lost in the first round the season after that and missed the playoffs entirely after that. They were desperate to improve their situation, and they had actually been turned down by Gretzky the year before for the Rangers in spite of him offering them more money (they basically gave him an ultimatum which of course always works out great when trying to sign a high profile kind of guy). So they looked to Messier. They gave him the money he wanted and they even gave him the captaincy and his number which had been out of circulation (but not officially retired) since 1974 when Wayne Maki died.

Here's the thing though: Pat Quinn (Canucks GM) gave in to Messier because he thought he would somehow do for the Canucks what he did for the Rangers, either because he actually believed it or because the new Canucks owners thought it. He didn't have to say yes to any of those things. Anyway it ended up costing Quinn his job and he was replaced with Mike Keenan who is an absurd man and really the guy Canucks fans should hate since he traded away Linden (and a number of other players).

However, a thing you might not hear Canucks fans mention, is because the team played so badly when Keenan and Messier was there they were able to land them the Sedins. A guy who the Canucks got as part of the Linden trade, Brian McCabe, was a huge part of landing Henrik Sedin. The Cancuks already had the second overall pick, which they used to draft Daniel. McCabe was traded to the Blackhawks for the 4th overall pick, which was flipped to the Lightning for the first overall pick (plus two later round picks) which was then flipped to the Thrashers for the second overall pick. Boom, Sedins on the same team.

Anyway I don't think Canucks fans hate for Messier is unjustified, since it sounds like he wasn't the best guy for the team, but it also sounds like the team was kind of a mess at the time and Messier is just a decent guy to pile blame/hate on. There were never any issues with him in New York, even when the team was awful during his final years. I don't think he should have accepted the captaincy in Vancouver, but he was also brought in to lead the team so who the hell knows? I do think that nobody should ever hire Mike Keenan to do anything, but that's a separate issue (and one teams only very recently started to understand; I'm looking at you, Panthers).

Anyway the Canucks waived him and eventually became a super good team that was basically one ridiculous Tim Thomas performance away from landing the Cup for the first time, and that was all built from things that happened as far back as when Messier (and Keenan) was ruining everyone's lives in Vancouver. The Rangers re-signed him after that and never even sniffed the playoffs during his second stint here.

Just a correction.

After the 97 season, Messier's contract was up and the Rangers didn't think he was worth over $6.5m per season (he wanted $20m for three years). They had also just signed Gretzky and Pat LaFontaine, so they thought they were fine with centers.

They actually had just signed Brian Skudland and Mike Keane. Messier went on to sign with Vancouver shortly after. Dave Checketts the President of MSG (who was more of a Basketball guy) refused to give Messier the $6.5+ a year contract, despite just having resigned Patrik Ewing to a huge contract earlier in the year. It was a slap in the face to Messier who had actually won a championship. The Lafontaine trade came during pre-season after Messier had already left. And Gretzky was signed the summer previously, as Messier and Gretz played together for the season going to the ECF losing to Lindros and the Flyers.

Yeah, didn't mean to imply that Gretz was signed the same season Messier left. I was actually pretty tired and slightly drunk when I wrote that post (yay, World Cup!). Thanks for clarification on LaFontaine though.

The thing about Kennan replacing Quinn was partly a decision that Messier pushed to ownership and was famously a part of the decision making on the team since he was close to Kennan.

Many players came out and stated that Messier was clearly part of roster decisions.

Right, but why let a player have that kind of power? The Rangers never let him do that! I mean, they were perfectly capable of making their own hilariously awful roster decisions without consulting Messier, but I digress. You're putting a player with zero team building experience in charge (in whatever capacity) of shaping your roster? That seems... like a bad idea. Clearly the team figured it out since Mess was gone after three years (and Keenan only made it one season) but still.

Because the owners were dumb? They were the ones that allowed this to happen. It was also the owners first season as the owners since they got control of the Canucks through some shadowy deals.

(They were supposed to be co-owners with the owners that the Canucks had since expansion, because the owners had gone over budget in building a new arena but secretly grabbed some stocks to get past 50% ownership of the team)

[–]TibetzzVAN - NHL 16

And then Linden got traded. So yeah. Kind of a prick.

Someone made the definitive write up with news sources, player quotes and management quotes into explaining it.

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/showthread.php?t=1385597

Short story to it, him and Kennan was a cancer to the team. He showed no heart, no grit and no passion like he never did before, he just showed up for his pay check (he was also one of the most paid players in the league getting 6 million a year)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Maki

TL;DR Guy died of brain cancer in 1974, his number 11 was never issued again until Messier demanded it. One of his biggest fuckups he ever did.

Had he not done that, I would 100 percent respect Messier, but that leaves a bad taste in my mouth as a hockey fan, still an incredible fucking player and one of the best Oilers and best Rangers hockey players to ever fucking play the game. But that? And the fact he was given the C over Trevor Linden was beyond fucked up.

Trevor Linden and Pavel Bure were the heart and soul of that team in the 90's, that's not even disputable, that's a god damn fact, and to disrespect one of your core players like that is mind boggling.

And to top it off, the Canucks management to this day are a bunch of idiots. (Trading 3 starting goalies in a span of 2 years)

But then we noticed that the Sabres jerseys said "New York" across the front instead of their old logo. Boos quickly turned to cheers and it was a nice show of unity between two New York teams during a time where it was really hard to cheer for anything. Keep in mind that Ground Zero was still a smoldering mess just a few miles away. It was a pretty emotional night and one of the most memorable home openers I had the privilege of attending.

Canucks fans should be banned from any thread mentioning Messier. We get it, you hate him.

I didn't realize he was still playing in 2001. I thought he retired in 1999 or 1998?

[–]ThrowinderSinghDET - NHL 7

Gretzky retired in 99, and Mess was still there.

He retired during the 04/05 lockout. Gretzky retired in 1999 with NYR

Ok. I guess I was thinking of Gretzky.

Nope, he was ruining the Canucks those years.

Then they bought out his contract and he ran back to the Rangers.

I don't give a shit what team you're a fan of. This is a powerful image and Messier is one of the greats, history with your team or not. Grow up.

Favourite player of all time. Thanks for sharing OP.

I see you don't get along well with Canucks fans.

you put shame to that username /s

Wow that was powerful. Woah. I had a friend that lost her dad during 9/11 it was really devastating. She said to lose her dad that way was way worse than imaginable

Pretty sad that every single thing involving Mark Messier (including an iconic, powerful image with such massive circumstances surrounding it) has to be taken over by Canucks fans harping on an old joke/grudge.

No American city (or maybe even any city abroad) has ever been struck with such a display of terrorism, and the strength of the city was largely tied to the city's symbolic leaders showing courage and standing for nothing less than pride and a return to normalcy.

I'm honestly pretty pissed off at the Canucks fans who participated in the "Fuck Messier" circlejerk in this of all threads. This isn't about you. And maybe one day another fanbase will circlejerk around the captain of your cup winning team.

[–]HappyHaplessVAN - NHL 16

Am I missing something here? The one guy who said "Fuck Messier" was downvoted to oblivion. Nobody on this thread made this about them.

[–]DicNavisNYR - NHL 9

One guy said only "Fuck Messier" and he stands at 1 point, but the top comment and all of that comment's 21 children comments are about why the Canucks fans hate Messier. It totally took over the beginning of the thread.

then downvote it if you don't think it contributes, hide the conversation you aren't interested in, and move on with the thread

i mean, you're annoyed the threads being derailed by comments about messier yet somehow slamming the entire canucks fanbase is super relevant?

At this point half the comments are about why canucks fans dont like Messier and the other half are Rangers fans bitching about the first half.

The beautiful part of reddit id the fact that you can start your own discussion on any relevent topic. If you dont like people discussing that part of his career then start a discussion about a different part; maybe this part.

You whining and complain about the discussion being off topic of the picture is hypocritical.

[–]EasyKreiderNYR - NHL -4

Its the top of the god damn thread you depressed, bitter fucks. There's a reason you pessimistic fucks have never won a cup. Maybe if you cry less, and support your team more you might see different results. Then again, your entire city will probably just throw a collective temper tantrum after another early playoff exit, because that's the only thing the Nucks are good at. Whining.

[–]AmIStillShadowbannedTOR - NHL 22

Every fucking thread, it's incredibly annoying. But, cant expect much else from the most bitter fanbase in the league.

[–]ScrewbitNYR - NHL 11

Plus there are a ton of Nucks fans in this sub, way more than Rangers fans so its a losing cause.

[–]AmIStillShadowbannedTOR - NHL 1

Yep, whole profiles been hit by a downvote train, but what're you gonna do.

Come on, man. Those are some pretty broad strokes, don't you think?

[–]AmIStillShadowbannedTOR - NHL 24

I'm not joking, find any thread about Messier that isn't hijacked by angry Nucks fans. 2nd most points in NHL history and his name can't be brought up without a thousand Vancouver fans echoing "fuck Messier".

You'll also find in this thread a Canuck fan casually mentioning it then acting like a good dude, and someone else inquiring why Canuck fans hate Messier. THAT is the real issue... People asking, and us being way to giddy to oblige.

Harden the fuck up.

I was in Kindergarten when 9/11 happened, but even back then I remember it so clear and vivid. Great pic OP thanks for sharing.

That's Chief Ray Downey's (Killed on 9/11) helmet. Chief Downey was a member of the FDNY hockey team and a very well known and respected firefighter. Here is the FDNY Hockey teams article about him and how Messier ended up wearing the helmet. http://fdnyhockey.org/chief-ray-downey/
