All the comments here have me confused.

Yes, the confederate flag has a racist history

But some people view it as an icon of rebellion.

Regardless, destroying someone else's property is not cool and weakens your point.

Yea, I'm actually surprised at the amount of support for the confederate flag on the Houston subreddit.

I'm not. Have you seen the outrage there is for some fucking rims?

I sense hatred.

" I won't shoot'em but I gots a shovel, if you know what I mean"

That your full of horse shit? Lol.

Sounds like premeditation to me.

Premeditated what? Defense of property?

Implying that you want people to come vandalize your home so you can beat the shit out of them could be argued by even an average lawyer to be premeditated assault. Leaving that part out of the article would have made it a different story.

It's crazy how many people don't understand the reason this flag is so controversial. It's a symbol of hate, and a part of history you want to never be reminded about. If you can't even see that side of the argument then you've got some race issues that need to be dealt with.

Growing up with the Dukes of Hazzard as my favorite TV show, I fail to see the apparent race issues in the show that "I need to deal with".

The Dukes of Hazzard is fallout, it is not the primary reason.

I just watched a kkk documentary about them recruiting veterans and all of them were representing that flag with pride. I'm with you, I don't understand why people don't see how its associated with hate.

I don't understand why people don't see how its associated with hate.

They know and they don't care. They know that "heritage not hate"== "a heritage of hate" but they don't care.

Should it not be their right to fly whatever kind of flag that they want though? I thought everyone had a right to believe in whatever BS they want to. Does that mean that someone should be able to shoot them, beat them up, or burn their house down like patssle so elequently put it? Who is more wrong here, the person that flies a flag that is offensive, or the person that trespasses and commits arson?

Wasn't the Mexican a symbol of hate? Pretty sure a few decades before the civil war Santa Anna was killing anyone who wasn't Mexican

Do you see the same flag of hate that I do?

I can almost guarantee you the next "deport the mexicans" rally will have prominent use of the stars and stripes.

Literally anything can be controversial if you get enough people to bitch about it. Fortunately for us, Native Americans number so few that their objections to our flag mean nothing even though we committed some of our worst atrocities with it as our standard.

If you think burning a confederate flag is some rational result of its controversy then I assume you take the same attitude towards the stars and stripes. They both are symbols of hate.

Those people are holding the American flag while trying to oppose what America wants to happen.

The Confederate flag was flown on battle grounds directly in opposition to the American flag while trying to kill American soldiers. They wanted to abandon America and the American flag.

"What America wants to happen." WTF does that even mean? Those people are "America."

They, as Americans, dont want integration. Just like we, as Americans, might want any number of divisive political objectives. Would you say that Americans who opposed the Iraq war who were flying American flags were "trying to oppose what America wants to happen"? See how stupid that sounds?

America represents a lot of different things to different people. To many Native Americans, each one of those Stars on the stars and stripes represents an instance where white settlers kill many Natives, drove them off their land, confined them to concentration camps (i.e. reservations) and then codified their conquest by making it a part of their new government. Lets all salute the flag for that, right?

What do you think the American flag means to millions of Vietnamese and Iraqis who were killed when we invaded their countries?

The Confederate flag was flown on battle grounds directly in opposition to the American flag while trying to kill American soldiers. They wanted to abandon America and the American flag.

They wanted to save the "America" they had joined in 1776. The Confederate soldiers in many instances were just as "American" as the soldiers in the Union, they just didnt agree with what the Federal government was going to do.

Not a single slave ship ever flew the Confederate flag. Do you know how many slave ships flew the stars and stripes?

Look at the America you are defending? Did you enjoy your 4th of July, you genocidal racist?

So now vandalism is okay? That's what you are saying?

Vandalism isn't ok, but if the Westboro Baptist Church was marginally damaged, I wouldn't feel any pity for them either.

So now people who fly the Confederate flag are comparable to WBC?

Not nearly as well funded or organized, no.

he mounted it on his mother's home

Mama...I love you so much I'm going to hang a flag on your house that might get you shot, beat up, or your house burned down.

I hope they catch who ever did this and lock them away in prison.

"I ain't going to shoot you" - see that's exactly what the criminals want, you to take a soft stance.

ugh, someone put up a confederate flag on the same pole as the american flag two doors down from my mom.

People who fly it are just trolling and are likely idiots who can't hold competing ideas in their head simultaneously and summarily reject the one that forces further introspection. They are the mental equivalent of a lazy boy chair that can only fit one wide ass.

I got a little stinkface looking at it but just rolled my eyes and was done with it. I could go on about how fucking stupid it is to put both flags on the same pole (or any two flags on the same pole), but I also could go on about how a dog ate my cat's poop right out of the box once. It was my friend's dog and he was shamed all day for it.

I'm generally not one to condone prejudice but when you willingly wrap yourself in the stars and bars the "pre" part of that begins to crumble and you are advertising to the world that you're either stupid, racist, or both. Probably both.
