So anyway why did you go on to give detailed statements to thirdparty newsfeeds first, before speaking to us? The place with the tagline 'the frontpage of the internet'? The people you slighted in the first place? Hell even buzzfeed got info before this statement from you...

Edit: Ellen responded to me, but I anticipate she will be heavily downvoted so here's the reply

"It was hard to communicate on the site, because my comments were being downvoted. I did comment here and was communicating on a private subreddit. I'm here now."

Publicity. Trying to do immediate damage control for the media

EDIT: To everyone who's just seeing this thread now, make sure you expand child comments (or go to her profile) because Ellen is responding a lot, she's just being heavily downvoted

And it did work, partially. Many 3rd part sites wrote articles that portrayed redditors as the evil and Ellen Pao/admins as the victimized admins.

Really? Everything that I saw was more sympathetic to the redditors, but then again I get all of my news from reddit.

Which makes me think this announcement is mostly just baseless pandering to a user base she doesn't care about.

Wosre, I don't see this as an apology to the users, but an apology to the mods.

To the users, reddit is slowly becoming more controlled by a small group of well connected mods. They censor anything they dislike & ruin reddit.

The buzzfeed one hurt the most.

10 Ways You Won't Believe That reddit Users Can Go Fuck Themselves!

They had to post something. I mean so many defaults closed for the day they had to get news and other bits from somewhere.

They went down the list of who was more important to apologize to. News organizations came first, we came last.

Because going to a thread immediately just got -1000 votes and lots of, "Ellen Pao is a cunt" replies. No one is under any obligation to engage when that's whats being thrown at them.

Because she didn't want the media wildfire to spread any faster, and the damage was already done with us.

The mods are the ones that really deserved to be addressed first though.

It was hard to communicate on the site, because my comments were being downvoted. I did comment here and was communicating on a private subreddit. I'm here now.

Edit: missing space

Why are you all of a sudden regretting things that have been years in the making? This is so far from genuine it's almost laughable.

How about apologizing for calling your strongest user base insignificant ?

When did that hapen?

Y u admins so rude

[–]Zadujj 1

There's no basis whatsoever to the claim that the complainers are the content creators.

Well this doesn't sound like an HR memo at all. /s

Thank you for finally apologizing on here, instead of through media interviews. Should've come to your community first, instead of the press. But you also miss the point. You say a majority of reddit users don't care. But, those of us who create content for the lurkers care. Acting flippant isn't a good way to get us on your side.

It's absurd how many days it took for this to happen.

What, that it took until the next business day?

Considering there were statements to the media over the weekend, yes.

If it's not a landmark firing (It wasn't), you should really do your succession planning before instead of after you fire somebody, so whatever statement that should have been made should have already been written. It shouldn't have taken extra time.

[–]Ddodds 0

The level of fuck up sometimes requires people to come in on expected days off to damage control.

Okay.

"We're sorry you're angry, but also the angry people are an insignificant majority that don't really matter."

I know it's minor, but I appreciate how direct the wording of the apology was. No "I'm sorry if you were upset" or "I'm sorry you feel that way" unlike many "political" apologies; rather it was a straight to the point nostra culpa "We screwed up."

Be interesting to see where this goes.

Thanks for the announcement. I wasn't expecting it to actually come. Quick question: Will those devs be communicating with us at /r/Toolbox?

I appreciate that you guys are acknowledging the problem and at least dating you'll try to fix it. That's certainly better than ignoring the problem or, worse, outright saying one doesn't exist.

I just hope this all isn't a "Please understand" a la Nintendo. Words are better than silence, but they aren't as good as actual tangible change.

Several Questions:

Can you respond to the change.org petition which is (as of this moment) currently at 170K~ signers and growing?

Will you step down as most redditors currently see you as the problem, not the solution?

How do you plan to gain back the community's trust?

I don't really care what you have to say. This is PR bullshit and you don't have a leg to stand on.

Why was Victoria fired?

I believe it's against the law for an employer to disclose that. Correct me if I'm wrong

Not against the law, but standard business etiquette. Similar to giving an employer 2 weeks notice before quitting.

I'm pretty sure you're right. Unless the former employee waives that right (by discussing it publicly themself).

We don’t talk about individual employees out of respect for their privacy.

With our announcement on Friday, we're phasing out our role being in-between interesting people and the reddit audience so that we can focus on helping remarkable people become redditors, not just stop by on a press tour.

The responsibilities of our talent relations team going forward is about integrating celebrities, politicians, and noteworthy people as consistent posters (like Arnold, Snoop, or Bernie Sanders) rather than one off occurrences. Instead of just working with them once a year to promote something via AMA, we want to be a resource to help them to actually join the reddit community (Arnold does this remarkably well).

We're still introducing and sourcing talent for AMAs, just now giving the moderators the autonomy to conduct them themselves.

In the interim, our Director of Outreach, Ashley, and Creative Projects Manager, Michael, have been filling this role (in addition to their other work), but we're looking to hire someone for the role of Talent Relations full-time to take over.

With our announcement on Friday, we're phasing out our role being in-between interesting people and the reddit audience

I like how you phrase this like it was your decision and not that of the IAMA mods.

Where the fuck is Victoria?

I spoke to her this morning. She's at home and seems to be in high spirits.

Why did you talk to everyone but reddit, we are the community and you ignored us. Its obvious you don't know much about the community here at all. Why don't you keep working on these positive changes but you yourself should make a real effort to become apart of and involved in the wonderful thing called reddit.

OP will deliver...

The users have no confidence in you. You should resign immediately, for the good of the company.

ELLEN PAO IT'S TIME TO RESIGN

She's running this ship into the ground. Guaranteed.

[–]Zangin 1

I'm really disappointed that she didn't respond to the petition against her.

Too little too late, you've shown your true colors.

What about censorship? Your post is all about placating moderators (which are essentially unpaid employees and do server attention). However there is NOTHING about the overt censorship occurring on Reddit. Posts about Ellen Pao suddenly disappear, Reddit censorship, and other issues that are most certainly NOT harassing anyone end up in shadowbans for users.

Your apology is not accepted.

It took you this long to reply, and this is what we get? Some bullshit apology that looks way to similar to what you told the moderators, just barely tweaked to more direct it to the normal users. Waste of time.

Thanks for the apology.

A day late and a dollar short, IMO.

Words are easy, actions are hard.

I want a response to the change.org petition. Also what is the direction that you want to take reddit too? Transparency please.

Don't gild! Use AdBlock!

Just say NOPE on July 1

/r/JustsayNope/

It's a good thing to apologize and acknowledge you fucked up. Now don't be like that episode of South Park and keep fucking up and keep apologizing. It only works once, okay?

Looking forward to the improvements in the coming months! And if not, I'm looking forward to the implosion!

Okay, but what about u/chooter.

Will you be having somebody fill the role that Victoria Taylor (chooter) filled? She was an important part of the community.

We completely understand if you can't (for legal/ethical reasons) comment directly on the firing of chooter... but clearly her role was vital. What are you doing to fill that gap?

So you'll be stepping down as CEO, right?

REMINDER EVERYONE: DO NOT BUY GOLD IN THIS THREAD

Does this mean, at some point, you'll tell us why Victoria was fired? Because a whole lot of the backlash was down to her being fired with no notice or reason given.

The masses will not be satisfied until Pao is out.

Can u/deimorz start by explaining why Victoria was let go? While you're at it, care to elaborate on why some subs get banned but subs like SRS continue to exist despite doxxing, brigading, and violating other site rules?

Admitting is the first step.

I'm having flashbacks to a recent break-up.

You've been promising mod tools for longer than I care to remember and they are still "coming soon." At this point your word alone means nothing. Actions will be the way to make it up to the community. Not words. Get to work.

Looking forward to seeing the coming developments. I'm hopeful!

this kinda feels like a "reddit pls" moment from the admins

WE WANT VICTORIA

South park: We're Sorry [ Video Here ] We're Sorry. SORRY. WE'RE SORRY SOOOOORRRRyyyyyy

You keep saying "we"....

You should be saying "I"...

this gon' be goooooooood

What is your reaction to the Change.org petition that has just over 170,000 signatures calling for your resignation??

And are people being shadowbanned for criticizing you/Reddit??

Shitstorm inc.

[–]Wakers 2

We screwed up. Not just on July 2, but also over the past several years

Already trying to deflect criticism away from your own regieme within the opening sentence.

It's not sincere.

Talking to major media outlets before addressing the community on your own social platform demonstrates incompetence.

Not a good start.

They are just words, but they are important words for the community to hear. Fixing the mod issues and communication with admins is a definite step in the right direction.

Hopefully this will be the start of a healthier dialogue between admins and mods/users when it comes to functionality and communication issues on Reddit.

Let's hope this actually happens.

Well, this is a first step to transparancy... so thats good I suppose..

Currently, im very excited to see what is the next reason is for the Voat servers to die...

I think the damage is done. There's little you can do to prevent users from looking for a new platform at this point...

[–]Anuvkh 6

Everything no one wanted.

Does this bring back Victoria? Nope.

Pao out.

What is this commitment to fixing things in six months?

So..... this isn't an apology to the users/community, but to the Moderators? Lol...

The main issue, clearly, is the divide between Reddit the website and Reddit the business. Finding a balance to please both can obviously be quite difficult, but you'd be surprised to see the positive feedback and ideas the communities will have that could prop up the business side if you actively listen. I hope we can better the site thru this.

Some ideas, of course, are crazy (https://www.reddit.com/r/CrazyIdeas/comments/3cauxn/community_buyout_of_reddit/) but at least some are trying

1 comment per second. GL replying to all of this.

Yeah, good luck with this.

Why was Victoria fired?

Wonder what the admins think of pao

What about Victoria? Why was she let go?

I actually don't think its legal for them to disclose that

Allow freedom of speech and expression of ideas to return, stop censoring offensive ideas

Interesting to see how this pans out...

This is gold.

u/ekjp can you give us a rundown of the new cool things you are working on for us that still remain a surprise?

That click on the "save" button must have been hard.

Well its great that you admit to screwing up. Maybe we should all work together to make /r/reddit a better place for everyone.

As a person who has dealt with this kind of public backlash, though on a less huge scale, please do not be the person that throws themselves upon the pyre for public humiliation and anger. No need to sacrifice one person for many peoples' mistakes.

Too little, too late. You went to a news station days before you came to us, your user base. I can understand CYA but come on, they're not the ones who keep this site running, we are.

All aboard the Ellen Pao pun train!

Ok. But you still replaced a decent employee with a monolithic and vague team of individuals which can't seem to do even a fraction of the job they did. So apologies aren't really worth much here. Most of us upset folks want to see real changes meant to improve the community not reddit corporate.

Better late than never..

Begging Victoria to come back would also be a nice start.

Are we just suppose to pm /u/krispykrackers?

I haven't decided yet what the best channel of communication with me will be. PM's are fine for now, but I'm thinking having a designated subreddit would be more organized. Let me know if you have ideas, too. Maybe there's something better I haven't thought of yet.

But remember: most of us aren't interested in this.

You don't seem to be actually apologising for what people are angry about.

Either you are deflecting or you don't even know what's going on with your company at a very fundamental level. I don't know which is worse.

Sooo.... What happened to Victoria?

I hope no one gilds this.

We totally believe you.

Just kidding. Congratulations on acknowledging your mistakes. It'll make it easier for you to say the same thing next year when you guys repeat your screw ups.

I'm only still here because I don't really have a choice, there's no where else to go. But when there is, you can guarantee a lot of us are jumping ship. Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice, yeah not gonna happen.

This isn't an apology, and the key things that should have been addressed have not been in this post. More lip service.

We don't believe you. Resign and fuck off.

Stop it. You were already going to push these new changes onto us, regardless of our actions or not, so please stop patronizing us.

You DON'T have the answers, you DID shit on your community, via news outlets, and you DON'T have the respect, nor ability to post such a self-serving message.

Get out of here. I'm starting to already.

Oh boy you sure are afraid

Between you and me, no need to apologize. A few self-important redditors found out that maybe the world doesn't revolve around them and threw a hissy fit.

If takes balls to post this though, thanks for responding to it now instead of ignoring it. I hope reddit wil last a lof of more years!

Weird. There seems to be a lot of angry people in here for such a small vocal minority.

Why did it take so long for you to acknowledge this PR disaster? Not only that, all you did was promise us you'll do more than promise things. I'd love to see some decisive plans, time lines, and more information as to what led to the meltdown the past few days. We want details.

This website has been rather embarrassing to use over the past few weeks. I never used to tell people I was on Reddit...now I suggest people avoid it. I few embarrassed for everyone.

And why exactly should we believe a word you type?

This entire post is blatant PR bullshit.

Also:

We’re also going to figure out the best way for more administrators, including myself, to talk more often with the whole community

It's not like this is a message board or anything....

I appreciate that reddit is trying to make steps to rectify its errors. However, many, including myself, feel that we don't want you as the head of this company - I think that many, including the almost 200,000 who have signed the petition to have you removed, agree with that.

That said, why haven't you stepped down from your role at reddit yet?

What about Victoria?

Too little too late?

[–]______Last_Christmas 7ポイント8ポイント  (3子コメント)

Put tape over the clear areas on each side of the empty cartridge where the printer checks ink levels. I covered mine with black electrical tape and now it thinks all my color cartridges are full, allowing me to print in black and white with my black cartridge and not bug me about the others.

What? A heartfelt apology? Where will I get my drama now!?

This is going to end well

I wonder if this will change anything and if so, how will it effect reddit?

Too little too late.
