It's a lose-lose. Either pregnant women flee danger to ensure the safety of their unborn children (pretty important in a post-apocalyptic world). Or they fight and potentially die and you have an outrage that the game murders pregnant women.

The lesser evil, and honestly more logical action, is for them to flee.

The non-pregnant women in this game are every bit as combat capable as the men. And pregnant or not, the women are always as good at production and training.

There simply is no offense to be taken unless you are a terrible person who must be offended in some way by everything. And if it bothers you that much, play a vault that abstains from sex/pregnancy. Boost your population solely via lunch boxes and radio rooms.

Actually, I had a vault that practiced abstinence because I was tired of tracking the gene pool. After the first 16 dwellers on day one, the next two weeks saw literally no new dwellers, despite opening 10+ lunchboxes. After that I rage quit the vault. Earlier this morning, really. So I surmise that without increasing population via breeding, new dwellers will not arrive at the vault.

This was only one case, and I will admit I did not document it. This should replicated to see if others have the same results.

Makes sense in the FO universe. Why would a vault let anyone in and, if they didn't let people in in addition to not breeding, how would they maintain any sort of population?

I actually have an abstinence vault. No sex. No lunch box exploit. No bought lunch boxes. I'm at 19 dwellers (I haven't bothered counting how many lunch box missions I've suffered through, but it's been a lot). I just need to get lucky on one more lunch box and the radio room will be unlocked. I'm going to persist until it happens or raiders kill my 19 dwellers (and that's also very possible; we had some bad casualty counts earlier on).

the game murders pregnant women

That's the key. Can you imagine the fabricated uproar?

It could have worked thusly:

For every M-F couple in the Vault there is a 5% chance of a baby per hour (or something like that), such that kids just appear occasionally, no pregnancy per se, and certainly no "breeding" of your dwellers.

Would definitely feel a bit less creepy that way.

You're right. That would have made for a plausible and non-creepy solution. It does take away the fun and strategy of stat joining and skin/hair color combos, as well as being able to better manage population than sending every new young adult out to their death, but it is nonetheless a solid solution.

She's right, she's just completely missed the point.

The idea that women are babymakers is also mocked in the Fallout 3 trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYZpR51XgW0 (It's also made pretty clear that the girl is made pretty uncomfortable by that expectation.)

The entire point of fallout is to mock the social and political norms of the 1950s.

The game is supposed to be sexist. It's a darkly humorous look at how the potential of vault life might be presented by the dominant ideology.

Is she Mr. Fantastic because that was a huge reach

Speaking as a dyed-in-the-wool internet feminist, I noticed that as well. I also noticed that I'd be upset if any of my dwellers were like, "um, excuse me. I'm actually not a breeder," or "can I not? I had a child very recently". VAULT 270 NEEDS BABIES!

I settled on the observation that in a survival-focused autocratic society where breeding is regulated and demanded, a patriarchy (along with other oppressive systems) was inevitable. Before you hit a critical mass of dwellers, it's more valuable to impregnate women and arm men and distribute the men to more accident prone positions so that when you decide to expand your numbers you can allow the women to hide. What do you call a society where men have all the jobs and all the guns?

Fortunately, once you have plenty of people, it starts making more sense to empower women, but in my own vault, I'm still in an equalizing phase. It's kind of nice to think of a more progressive society growing from a sketchy autocratic ruin.

I think it would benefit the game to assign personalities, friendships/loves, objections and rebellions to the dwellers. Not only would that generally help add depth to the game, it would help aleve AS's objection, since there may be dwellers who may express their preferences. The player can act as a good cop overseer and make sure that people's wishes are respected or can act as a bad cop overseer and make demands for the good of the many that rolls over the wishes of the few.

If the overseer was a woman shouldn't it be a matriarchy?

No, patriarchy is a certain form of order rather than simply a man being in charge.

Ah so its just named after men because equality or something. Well what ever it is it should never be used to show inherent biases of feminisim against men.

Your post seems confused. Think of the Catholic Church, which reflects the governing ideas of a lot of hierarchies throughout history until around a century ago. It's run entirely by men and ordered around that - the entire system is based on men. It's a patriarchy. A female pope wouldn't change that the whole system is based around men.

It has nothing to do with equality? I think you're bringing your own issues into it.

Surprise surprise, someone who makes hundreds of thousands of dollars finding sexism everywhere and reporting it managed to find sexism somewhere so she could report it.

In other news, Doom and Fallout are violent games.

I can make money for pointing out sexism? Please, tell me more.

The "In it for the money" criticism might be the dumbest insult of Sarkeesian I've ever seen.

It's not a great way to make money, that's absurd. And she's faced disgusting levels of harassment that will follow her for her entire life. How much is that worth?

Suggesting that criticism of games from a feminist perspective is ignorant is really bizarre because it's literally the opposite of ignorance. She's looking at gaming through a new lens, bringing a new perspective on the medium. You can disagree with it, but it's certainly something new and different than most of the mainstream coverage. In what way is that ignorant?

brb, crippling my head with a fat man.

A pregnant woman firing a combat shotgun can not be good for the baby. If you can't drink too much caffeine then the adrenaline from fire or fighting would be harmful to it as well. Living in a vault in the year 2077+ should imply that women are knowledgeable of these things, as most are today. Guess all women today don't know proper child carrying safety, though.

Yeah I saw someone else post a link to a YouTube rant, it was pretty funny. That lady needs to take a chill pill. Not every game mechanic is built to make women less equal to men.

I was thinking while playing that people would be offended by this

Serious question: can I kill the pregnant woman somehow? I got that bug, and am at 200 dwellers, and the pregnant woman piss me off because they just run around. Maybe another bug to send them to wasteland to die or something?

This is outrageous, some of my most powerful characters, like Star Paldin cross are women. Sexism? Hardly. meritocracy.

The running from danger felt a lot less odd than getting pregnant instantly raising happiness to 100%.

      "actively encouraging patriarchal norms"

Yeah, she's got no real argument here.

Shes really is the ultimate attention whore. I am glad I am seeing less and less of her.

This lady suggests gaming is sexist, so I'll call her a whore. That'll show her.

"Attention Whore" - Label given to any person who craves attention to such an extent that they will do anything to receive it. The type of attention (negative or positive) does not matter.

Yes, I am aware of the Internet. You're still kind of an idiot.

Wait, sorry, this is an edit. You're an utter moron and probably a sexist idiot for thinking she's discussing gender issues in gaming for the attention. That's what reality shows are for, and you're trying to undercut her entire motivation because you couldn't possibly respond intelligently to anything she says.

Seriously the professional umbrage takers are going after this game now?
