This really is strange.

This subreddit is probably Reddit's most valuable subreddit in terms of positive press and who it attracts.

Crazy to see this much disconnect between admins and the mods of a sub this size.

My paranoid side thinks that they want total control over iAMA, in order to put forward only the questions that they want and delete anything that goes against their interests.

When you start getting business people involved that's a mindset that goes deep. Anyone involved in marketing and PR would be very, very nervous to let a bunch of volunteers run such a large section of the website. In many ways, Reddit has put it's brand name in the hands of the mods, and thats something old school business people would never let happen.

Yet it worked, and really only fails when they stick their fingers into things.

It worked in the sense of building a popular web site, but did it work in terms of building a business? By the yardstick of businesspeople, reddit is a spectacular failure. It's built a community, but it hasn't found a way to monetize that community. As a result, it needs 6 billion page views a month just to keep the lights on and the servers running.

Reddit (the company) ought to be good at this. Reddit ads are unique in the digital landscape in the level of targeting they can offer. This should be a huge moneymaker. But there are two problems: first, targeting doesn't scale. How would you sell Coke to redditors? There isn't a subreddit for sugary beverages. Coke only cares about gross demographic targeting. Reddit shines if you want to sell something very specific. If you want to sell model rockets in Idaho, you can easily zoom in on people who are subscribed to model rocketry and Idaho subreddits. But that means reddit has to sell to a large number of small advertisers, not a small number of large ones.

And that's where the second problem comes in. So you want to sell reddit ads to the model rocket shop in Idaho. This is not a dildo shop in the Tenderloin. It's probably run by a mom and pop who see their purpose as making life more fun for kids (and maybe teaching them something). So assuming the Reddit Corp. sales force reaches them at all, at some point, mom and pop are going to visit the site to see what they're getting into.

And they're going to find a (to them) toxic brew of pornography, atheism, gore and hate speech. What makes this community what it is, and not something more like Facebook, is that Christian grandmothers are repulsed by it, so we can post photos of mangled children to /r/wtf without them complaining. And that's all fine and good, until we want their money.

So what is Reddit Corp. supposed to do? Keep their hands off the site and slowly go broke, or Disneyfy everything and maybe make money (or maybe rapidly go broke)?

I don't know the answer, but I know it's not as simple as just not sticking their fingers into things.

Ideally, I'd like to see something like a Reddit Foundation that does what reddit is good at, but as a non-profit, making just enough to keep the lights on the salaries paid.

you basically picked a random example and expanded on it as if that were the only possibility, and to boot you hand-picked details that support your conclusion.

in fact it would be really easy to advertise on reddit. the framework is already there. let me pull a random example out of my ass: gaming PC companies (sites like cyberpower, ibuypower, etc. as well as newegg) could simply target /r/battlestations. simple.

i've always felt like the advertising framework had been there for years but has never been utilized even a little bit. there's all these ads for subreddits and "thank you for not using adblock ..." i'd be totally fine with reddit replacing those with actual ads, but why do they seem to be trying to monetize AMAs first?

As a result, we will no longer be working with the admins to put together AMAs. Anyone seeking to schedule an AMA can simply message the moderators or email us

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did the IAMA mods just... declare their independence from the Reddit administration?

July 3rd, 2015, we celebrate our independence day!

I feel they could have just waited a little longer...

Nah that's like having your birthday on Christmas, it sounds nice but then you realize all it means is everyone pretends that their Christmas party is also your birthday.

Also, random plug, some dude made a reddit2.0 substitute while this site figures out its drama. http://eerrii.com/

It's perfectly between Canada and America independence I love it

Not only that, but the Declaration of Independence was actually ready July 2, it just didn't get finished signing until July 4!

Edit: See /u/strychnineman's comment, the vote was July 2, it was printed July 4, and the signatures came later.

President Thomas Whitmore: Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.... The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfill that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfill that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite!

~Charlie Chaplin

I suppose that's kind of what happening. Appropriate timing!

You guys have put them in a really tough position. If the admins now come in and fire all the mods, the integrity of AMA will basically be ruined. And now that you have control they can't monetize it how they want. Kudos for having the balls to stand up to them.

If the admins now come in and fire all the mods, the integrity of AMA will basically be ruined.

That won't just ruin the integrity of /r/IAMA, it will cause a major shitstorm site-wide and could conceivably ruin reddit once and for all. Admins have always been 'hands off' and, as far as I'm aware, have never forcefully removed moderators/creators from subreddits. If we woke up tomorrow and all the IAMA mods were removed to be replaced by some employee of Reddit, it will be clear evidence they're doing something nefarious - like turning this subreddit into some additional source of revenue by charging people to have an AMA hosted here.

they removed a wow mod when he was basically holding the sub hostage to get things from blizzard. the full story's somewhere else but you can't really be mad at them for that one

Or, alternatively, it might simply lead to a drop of users while the apathetic majority still reads the new AMAs because they couldn't care less.

I think that's been the general trend for a while now.

While I doubt the admins will replace the leadership of r/IAmA, at least in the short term, I'd be surprised if they didn't implement a way to prevent their default subs from being set to private now that there's precedent for it being used as a form of protest.

Can't the admins just ban you all and control this subreddit themselves if they wanted?

As said elsewhere: We have spent a lot of time learning how to make this sub run. A new team is going to need time to sort that out, and by the time they do, I suspect users will have given up on this subreddit as the quality quickly declines. You can replace us slowly one by one, but as a large group, the sub will clearly suffer.

How do you plan to verify AMAs going forth?

The information we have requested is essential to ensure that money is not changing hands at any point in the procedure which is necessary for /r/IAmA to remain equal and egalitarian.

I fully support you doing this, but how do you plan to go about it?

Anyone seeking to schedule an AMA can simply message the moderators or email us at AMAVerify@gmail.com[5] , and we'd be happy to assist and help prepare them for the AMA in any way. We will also be making some future changes to our requirements to cope with Victoria's absence. Most of these will be behind- the-scenes tweaks to how we help arrange AMAs beforehand, but if there are any rule changes we will let you all know in a sticky post.

That's exactly what this is. This is a shot across the bow of the owners of this website.

The moderators just told the owners they won't work with their employees, or allow the owners to control the editorial content of their own site.

Frankly, that doesn't bode well for the moderators, who will shortly have their keys to the site taken away from them. There's simply no way the owners of Reddit will allow the moderators to wield that sort of power (even though they probably should allow it.)

Think of it as the reporters and editors of a newspaper telling the advertising side of the newspaper that they won't interview their advertisers and try to fake out readers that such interviews constitute "news."

What the moderators are saying is that there should be a wall between the editorial and business sides of Reddit. The advertising side has breached the wall, and fired the person advocating for the editorial side (Victoria).

This would be a surefire way to nuke the brand that reddit had been building over the past years.

"Please create communities for us, for free, until they become big enough for us to make money off of, and then we'll take them from you and run them ourselves."

Yep, definitely doesn't inspire

Except the admins have always held that how a sub runs is completely up to it's mods (as long as it doesn't break on of the rules of reddit).

Except the admins have always held that how a sub runs is completely up to it's mods (as long as it doesn't break on of the rules of reddit).

Which have become increasingly hazey in the last couple of months.

The admins have always made the rules. Therefore, they can change the rules. They are changing the rules.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Redditors are created equal, that they are endowed by their Mods with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Karma.

This does not bode well for Reddit. Now the subs don't trust the admins and the admins REALLY don't trust the subs.

I'm just waiting for admins to take over the most popular and lucrative subreddits by force.

They won't and if they do that is going to be a whole different shitfest. That would be the end of Reddit. You're talking about mass exodus.

A side I hadn't thought of before until now is that the two people they let go were in charge of "managing" specific subreddits. The only advantage I can get out of this is that hopefully there are less admin mods now.

Two people? Victoria and who else?

So they fired the two essentially universally beloved faces of Reddit who drove the most positive publicity, generated the most buzz and represented this site with their kind and friendly nature to the world.

What's the next step of this awesome plan to monetize Reddit?

Not just in charge, he created reddit gifts, long before reddit got involved officially.

[–]Ezwa 75

Yep.

"Hey, you're doing a cool thing, wanna get on board with us to expand this great thing ?"

"ok bye now lol"

More specifically, the two admins that were let go were vocal about maintaining quality rather than trying to monetize their subs.

I'm a little surprised you came back this quickly

Don't be. It's the internet. 1 day passing is like, 3 weeks internet time.

For real. Try skipping Reddit for a day and you have 5 new memes, 30 inside jokes and so on. Keeping up is like a full time job lol

I ended up on Facebook this morning and was forced to remember why I don't do that anymore. Now I'm forced to read an actual book, like a filthy scholar.

Now do an AMA with Victoria

Seconded

It's almost necessary at this point

It will go down as the most viewed and presented AMA in internet history.

Do an AMA with Victoria and Chairman Pao

This. Would be amazing.

a Pao AMA would be nothing but lame PR talk to softball questions

On a scale from one to triggered how deeply did the Internet hurt you Glorious Pao?

Let's be honest, it would literally be nothing but pictures of Hitler saying "STOP BUYING REDDIT GOLD"

Everything she said would be downvoted into oblivion, yet still gilded because she gilds her own comments to give the illusion of supporters.

A gilding is literally showing one supporter. Unless she gets 4k gildings per comment she will still be outnumbered and everyone knows it.

There was that one guy who got like four thousand gold just so someone else would eat a donkey dick.

This isn't going to happen. I'm sure she signed a nondisclosure agreement and we all know how willing Pao is to try to sue somebody.

Victoria's Secret

You clever dog you. I'd buy you gold if there wasn't a gold strike happening. This emoji of a nice bouquet of summer flowers will have to do. 💐

Now instead of gilding were going to start "arranging"

Some user on /r/pcmasterrace suggested using Steam gifts as a new, actually useful gold. Sounds like a pretty good idea.

Exactly. Everyone wants Victoria to spill the beans but that would put her in a compromising position. It would put her at risk of legal action from reddit, it would impact her future job prospects, and if it turns out she was unfairly terminated it would affect her ability to take legal action against reddit.

Victoria; keep your mouth shut for the time being.

I doubt she has any solid beans to spill. My read-between-the-lines of this is that she was not given an explanation, but instead was offered a fat severance package. This is called termination without cause, and companies do it all the time when they want to be rid of someone who's doing their job well (and so can't be terminated with cause), but they want rid of anyway.

Always included in a deal like that is a signed document promising not to disparage or take any action against the company, or to discuss details of the agreement.

Oh God yes. I pity the first celebrity that does a Reddit/Poa Sanctioned AMA. Surely the celebrity's PR team cant view it as anything but negative at this time.

Does anyone know why she was fired ?

Nope, one person claimed to know somebody at reddit who said that it was over her objection to video AMAs, but there's been no proof of that.

'Video AMAs' tend to be horrible.

In that it is very easy to only answer the easy questions and there is little way for the community to decide which questions they want answered.

As a result, we will no longer be working with the admins to put together AMAs. Anyone seeking to schedule an AMA can simply message the moderators or email us at AMAVerify@gmail.com, and we'd be happy to assist and help prepare them for the AMA in any way.

The important part. Well, it's all important, so read all of it.

So basically, the amount of high profile AMAs will drop significantly from here on out, right?

I assume the /r/IAMA team will try their best to make sure this doesn't happen.

We will do our best to try and maintain high profile AMAs, but obviously with the loss of chooter, it will be difficult.

Edit: spelling

Has your mod team considered separating IAMA from reddit entirely? You have enough following where that could seem a realistic option. There could be format changes too specific to AMA's that would make sense when you don't have to be compatible with the rest of Reddit.

Just curious if that thought was even bounced around.

It's really just a matter of time before the admins seize this sub (and probably the rest of the defaults as well). They should take it offsite if they want it to survive.

There were plenty of high-profile AMAs before Victoria's involvement. The problem was that they were oftentimes uninteresting PR/promotional style writing, without much engagement. The Morgan Freeman AMA is a perfect example; it's generally believed the entire thing was written by his PR team.

No way, are you kidding? The only way it could have sucked so bad is if it were actually him.

If it were a pr team, it would have had a lot more positive, generic tone to it with good spelling and grammar and lots of answers. It would not have been these standoffish three word answers that made him seem like a prick if there were A-list level celebrity pr professionals involved.

To my understanding it's unclear if anybody from his team was actually involved. It may have been entirely fake. The "proof" the admins accepted (without Victoria there) was absolute shit.

I'd rather the mods take it than some admin team even if quality drops for a time.

It might, but it's up to us to stop it. Us, as in, the userbase. We need to stick to our guns and support the Mods here at /r/IAMA

The people doing the AMA's are here for one reason, and one reason only and that is exposure for them, their movie, their book, whatever.

I will be here for the community, because that is what we, at the end of the day. A community. And nothing the admins do will change that.

The moderators have declared their independence!

Reddit management completely shut out of the reddit crown jewel ? Smooth

A very strong move indeed.

There was a lot of discussion on this, and we decided it was for the best at this time.

Honestly I hadn't thought of this solution in all the time that reddit was down, and I think it's arguably the best for the future of reddit and the sub. I guess the original creators did give us the tools to police ourselves independently. That was after all one of the founding principles of reddit. We shouldn't let reddit's 'owners' take that away from us. Either way I think you've made a choice that will please a lot of the community :)

We really need some sort of assurances from the mods that they are not being hoodwinked - not here, we all believe you and we believe in AMA... But we also know there is a lot of money interested in ruining the successful format we have enjoyed. The overall impression people are getting from Victoria's departure was that reddit wants AMAs to be more marketing and less actual AMA, because that is what Victoria was so excellent at preventing.

I wish the mods the best on their quest to find a way to do this without her, and applaud their integrity.

I know, I love it. Admins won't do their job? Fuck em, we'll do it ourselves

I know, I love it. Admins won't do their job? Fuck em, we'll do it ourselves Admins ban the current mods of IAmA and install new ones so that they money could flow.

FTFY.

But if that does happen, word will get out and people will be outraged. It would be one of the worst moves admins could make right now.

Nice, lot's of talk of IAmA switching to pre-screened questions because of admin pressure. I hope that never happens and that the lines of communications stay two-way and direct.

Pre-screened questions will not happen.

How did the admins respond to this action?

There was a lack of foresight, organization, and planning. You can read through kn0thing's comments for an idea.

I read through them. That guy doesn't sound like the kind of guy I'd want in my community. Maybe we should kick him out.

Considering "this action" happened less than ten minutes ago...

Are they really going to let you do this? AMAs are probably the largest draw for this website. You exclude admins from the process and they're gonna take this sub over.

But then it escalates... and popcorn is delicious.

Ah yes. A hostile takeover. I'm sure that will go over well.

If they try that, this blackout is going to be a drop in the bucket compared to what's coming their way.

As a result, we will no longer be working with the admins to put together AMAs.

This is perfect. Shame you won't be getting paid to do this job however because you deserve it.

We don't need money to find fulfillment in what we do. We love the site, usually, we love the users. We love the team we work with, and we love our volunteer job.

We're just glad it's going in the right direction (we think) at this point.

This is probably the nicest and most effective vote of "No Confidence" I've ever seen from Reddit Mods. Well done!

Can Victoria be named a Mod?

edit: I can honestly say that gold made my entire life. Thank you so much!

If she wants, I think we would all welcome her.

That would be a great idea. If /u/chooter is willing, she would be an immensely influential addition to the moderating team if they are serious about pulling away from Reddit admins to organise and conduct AMAs.

Seriously, how is this giving the admins a big FU? If she came back to help, she's now working for free. The mods already work for free (economically, I have no idea how they do it -- but thanks!). Now Reddit can sit back and have Victoria do her old job without even paying her. That just sounds like BS.

Victoria is WAY too good of a public relations person to do this sort of stuff for free. If she came to DC, I'm sure she could easily find a six-figure job within a few weeks.

Victoria knows she's very good at what she does -- the mods have already said they won't be able to do what they did without her, regardless of her capacity as a Reddit employee. Like the Joker said (and this is one of the most important things I've learned in life)

"If you're good at something, never do it for free."

Victoria: If you're interested in D.C. life, PM me.

its only a big FU in the sense that if r/iama was able to do all ama's on its own (with or without victoria) reddit doesnt get any money from them. theoretically what reddit wanted (why this whole thing started) is because they want their team to talk to PR people and then money will have to exchange hands for the ama to even happen. It would be a significant increase in their money intake. ...so basically people dont want that to happen because then we would get boring ama's where people are just trying to sell reddit their movies or whatever (see: https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/p9a1v/im_woody_harrelson_ama Pretty much the worst ama ever)

Yea that's a great idea. Company fires her so "in protest" she continues on doing her old job for free. That'll teach 'em!!!

Yea exactly. Why would she even want anything to do with reddit at this point? The whole thing has left a sour taste in my mouth. I can't even imagine how she feels.

What will become of the AMAs that were scheduled to occur during the downtime? Will they be rescheduled?

We would love to reschedule them! Anyone interested can email us at amaverify@gmail.com and we will get everything set up and moving forward.

I quite enjoyed it while subreddits were offline and admins crying for reopening them again.

When the admins find that their main cash cow is going to be tough to milk the next day, they are going to start crying again soon. Let's see how this plays out, kudos to the mods of this sub for a great move though.

Expect a /r/blog or /r/announcements bullshit post filled with corporate speak anytime now.

I'm actually surprised reddit hasn't done a corporate takeover of certain defaults. Especially IAmA, considering reddit developed an app specifically for this subreddit.

I nominate Victoria to do the first new AMA

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DACVAK AMA?

I'm assuming they didn't like this part:

When someone at our company meeting someone bluntly asked "You stated you were the interim CEO and that reddit was looking for one to replace Yishan. Are we still looking for a new CEO, and if not, why should we trust you to do the job?" She literally responded with "You'll have to pry this position from my cold, dead hands!!!" which was met with applause. To be totally honest, I just sat there dumbfounded. It was one of the most non-answers I had ever heard.

-Dacvak

So are AMA's going to be less personable now? I really enjoyed reading several AMA's where you could tell Victoria and the guest were cracking jokes together with the way she answered.

We are going to try our best to not let that change, even if that means we get on the phone with people to walk them through AMAs. We will do everything we can to keep the quality you love.

I have to say you guys are a class act. You outclassed /u/kn0thing, Ellen Pao, and whoever is putting the financial pressure to monetize AMAs. Good job and fuck the man. drops mic

EDIT: Obligatory thanks for the gold- but I'd rather you put your money towards something more worthy. My favorite is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation considering I have a son with CF. :]

EDIT 2: I've decided to quit moderating on reddit. It was fun while it lasted.

This still seems like an unsatisfactory outcome. Nothing seems to have been resolved, and there is just now a huge undertone of mistrust. Doesn't bode well for the future.

It doesn't. The admins dropped us in it and our easiest out was working with an unknown team. We're choosing a different option. We may have to space out AMAs a bit more now and the degree of handholding will also have to be toned down, but we think it's more important to have high quality AMAs rather than a high quantity of AMAs. And for now, we don't trust anyone else to maintain the level of quality we want.

Can you go into detail about what information you guys requested that wasn't given?

The information we have requested is essential to ensure that money is not changing hands at any point in the procedure which is necessary for /r/IAmA to remain equal and egalitarian.

We wanted to know who specifically was on the team and what sort of accountability they had. We also wanted oversight since they'd be representing this subreddit and being it's public face. The answers have been unsatisfactory thus far. We're willing to work with admin to come to an equitable agreement, but we have some basic requirements that we have to be sure are being fulfilled. I can't really go into more detail without delving into our methods and techniques, sorry.

Now I'm wondering what trade secrets there are relating to AMAs.

Think about it. What other internet site allows for interaction between consumers and products on the scale of reddit. If a company wants to promote a product, in the case of reddit mostly movies, they can send an actor or whoever to promote it.

There is obviously the chance at monetizing this service, if the mods are not comfortable with the answers they got about the group of admins controlling who does AMAs then their only solution is to bypass them completely.

That is not to mention that it has been stated that Victoria made sure it was the person doing the AMA and not a rep/agent. Something that tried to be done and most likely will again in the future.

The fact is that without an admin fighting for real and quality AMAs, the mods need to take it upon themselves to get that proof and ensure that there no shady business.

It'd not over yet - the mods have taken Reddit's primary PR tool from the admins. The admins now either have to up their game or sack the IAMA mod team to get it back. Either way it'll be interesting!

I have a feeling if they did that, after all the hard work and dedication over the years from the mod team, there would be even more of a backlash.

It would kill reddit. Every single AMA from then on would be brigaded harder than Unidan. Celebs wouldn't come here due to the caustic nature of the interaction. Public statements against reddit would come out. Advertisers would pull out.

It would be bad.

Ellen Pao will be the end of reddit.

*is

Ellen Pao will be the end of is.

Agreed. I also think this was the right decision. I was concerned that r/iama mods would just quit and give control of this subreddit to corporate. This forces them to either pull back or push forward entirely. Good job.

Well /u/Dacvak's AMA is getting nuked. No longer shows up on the /r/IAmA page and his responses are getting deleted. Somebody's not happy about it.

When I saw his ama my first thought actually was this: I wonder how long they'll let this be up. It took almost 20-30 mins before they removed it. I have a very sinking feeling in my stomach about the way this site's going :-(

Bitch about not enough women being employed within IT related jobs, then sack Victoria. Good job Pao you fucking moron.

I just hope that everyone remembers this and it doesn't get swept under the rug as these things usual do.

I wonder if Victoria will try and sue Pao for "gender discrimination".

it's good to have some information out, I wish you guys (mod team) the best of luck in getting everything back in track. And I hope to see /u/chooter on here some more, if just as a user

This is the classiest thing to come out of this whole debacle.

Affected mods handling the situation with professionalism, rational decisions and well written announcements. Reddit admins... let's say less professionalism.

Why don't you make /u/Chooter a mod here?

Now she can help Reddit by working for free! That will show corporate!

It seems like this is all blowing over too quickly.

Interesting definition of blowing over. The post basically says "fuck you Reddit staff, you fucked up for the last time and we're done with you, we can do this without you and frankly it will be more trustworthy and honest that way."

"We're done with you Reddit staff, but we're still gonna use your website and continue to provide a large amount of traffic"

I agree, it's a weak strike.

A bigger "fuck you" would be to move the system to another site/its own site. It's currently more like "fuck you.... But we still need all this infrastructure of the site you have in place, so we'll stay"

This is how little a shit /u/kn0thing gives about the community.

The information we have requested is essential to ensure that money is not changing hands at any point in the procedure which is necessary for /r/IAmA[4] to remain equal and egalitarian. As a result, we will no longer be working with the admins to put together AMAs. Anyone seeking to schedule an AMA can simply message the moderators or email us at AMAVerify@gmail.com[5] , and we'd be happy to assist and help prepare them for the AMA in any way.

And there it is, the knife cutting into the very fabric which makes up the veil of opaque Reddit to reveal what the users want - transparency.

Bravo.

What a complete mess. I feel bad for Victoria and the mods that have to deal with reddit admins. The admins seem to be the sweep-it-under-the-rug style people and that is not good for a place like reddit.

Thanks for taking matters into your own hands. Here's some reddit gol... Heres a pat on the back.

Let's ditch this place and go where Victoria goes.

Has the mod team considered trying to build a separate AMA site apart from reddit? It seems like the admins no longer have the right ideas for what direction IAmA should be going. It'd be a good deal of work, but if it meant getting out from under the admins' thumbs, at least...

The issue is less viewers would come from it. This sub is already established and well known as well as accessible. A large majority of (my) the appeal of Reddit is one's varied interests all being on one site
