Silicon valley season 2. It's on HBO, written by Mike Judge, and based on his time in Silicon Valley in the 80s. It's a great show.

Edit: it is set in the current time, but he drew on his experiences from silicon valley in the 80s

Edit #2: jesus christ you people saying "its in modern times" have no reading comprehension skills. Learn what "based on" means.

Yeah the paper cites Vinith Misra who is a Stanford Ph.D student and he was the guy brought in to advise on how to make the algorithm behind Pied Piper plausible enough for TV.

I think instead of a mass exodus from Reddit, there's going to be a restructuring in management and everything's going to be fine and dandy.

Such a gorgeous device, and the UI is stunning, shame Microsoft has bastardized it since.

Thats a zune??? It looks awesome. Even the logo on the back is great.

Zune really was a great device. The market place had unlimited music for 10$ that game you a DRM free album every month. (10 or so songs). It paid for it self. So It didn't have crazy apps that made the Ipod touch a huge success. As far as a Music player goes, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I miss my Zune, I've had an iPod and a Zune and the Zune was hands down the better.

I wish Zune would of took off in the direction of the Iphone.

If they had taken the direction of the Zune and made it the Windows phone I would have one. I don't like the way they made the live tiles on the Windows phone at all.

Let's not forget it was one of the first devices (if not the first) to be almost entirely screen, while the iPod wanted you to watch videos on its tiny 1"x2" screen that was smaller than the navigation buttons/wheel.

Plus, built-in radio tuner!

That was the Zune HD. It featured a touchscreen, much better UI, games, and some other features. It was gorgeous, thin, and responsive for the time. Unfortunately, it launched about 3 years after the initial Zune came out, and the name had been tarnished by then (although I had one of the big, chunky, non-touchscreen 120GB Zunes and loved it to death). It was also released about 2 years after the first iPod Touch, making it feel like it was too late to the party.

Look at us now

So in love with the way we are.

Fun fact - the lyrics were fanmade, and originally the song wasn't even meant to have lyrics. The dude who ended up doing the vocals tweeted him with the recording while deadmau5 was still tinkering with the song. He was so excited about the fan's work that they ended up actually recording it in a studio.

All Reddit had/has to do to not let Reddit die is not fuck up and do something stupid or make a massive terrible change. They're fucking up.

Not Atko, for sure.

The pic is funny obviously but the problem isn't improper server management, It's server capacity. Just imagine how much people are trying to reach Voat after this.

When the FPH fiasco happened, Atko stepped up and got new servers because people donated a bunch of money. I hope this time he can come through again.

I believe in this particular screen cap from the show "Silicon Valley," their issue wasnt server management either but server capacity. They were rushing to get more hardware up and running due to a huge spike in viewers of their livestream.

Some could claim that the hardware would have been fine if it wasn't too busy apologizing for Dinesh's shit codebase.

Can anyone tell me what voat.co is and why it's our next landing spot?

It looks exactly like reddit, same setup with upvotes and downvotes as far as I can tell, with subreddits called subverses, but it's just getting started so they don't have as stable a network as reddit does. Their main point is to "avoid the censorship of reddit".

Their main point is to "avoid the censorship of reddit".

And wasn't that pretty much the point of reddit when people left digg?

I mean, the problem you run into here is that as things grow and become more popular, you somehow have to make money to keep it going. Hell reddit makes money and they still have trouble keeping the oops page from showing. At some point, if voat grows and takes over for reddit, they'll be in the same boat having to sell advertising and premium features to pay for the servers. And then they'll have advertisers to appease, and pressure to remove the sketchy subs and limit mod powers and yada yada yada.

So to me hearing that Voat is all about avoiding censorship is great, but I'd be much more impressed if they laid out a plan for how they intend to continue doing that once the site grows to reddit scale (assuming it ever does). Starting up a new site with the promise of free speech and hands off moderation is no big deal. Growing that site is what's hard.

No. Leaving Digg was largely about the unworkable redesign, not censorship. There were some censorship issues, but that's not why most people left.

I think it was more about the way it was managed. The unworkable redesign, after ignoring user feedback and pursing profit over the community, was the issue. The redesign was a symptom of that. Had management not been so clueless and determined to ignore their user base the redesign would never have happened.

It's the same issue now, people are upset because the management is not listening, not transparent and allegedly pursing profits over the concerns of the community. Sure in digg's case a redesign might have been the final straw, but something else could easily happen here that will be the final straw.

Well yeah that will inevitably happen, it's a cycle

and all the clever advertising

If voat hires victoria, its game over.

They should probably make their site work before hiring staff.

  • Voat can't afford her.
  • Voat has significantly less traffic than Reddit does, so celebrities have little incentive to do an AMA.
  • Even if all of this was overcome, Voat simply can't handle the traffic.
  • Voat will never improve unless it's community becomes far less toxic and self destructive.

Edit: A lot of people are asking why I feel that way about Voat on the last point. Here's what I've replied to others. I still encourage others to try it out for themselves, as I plan to give it another chance in the future when this nonsense dies down:

If it were up right now I'd say go look for yourself, but it's down because of all this stuff with Reddit probably.

Everytime I've gone, the content seemed interesting, but the comments and community act like their all the hate subs rolled into one. Paranoid conspiracy theorists get top comments and make no sense, hatred for Pao or whoever else is shoehorned into the discussion, and they constantly mention Reddit to put it down. It's just so incredibly negative and hostile. Hardly a place to go for entertainment or to relax.

And this is just my experience. Give it a chance when it comes up if you like. I really wouldn't mind a competitor to Reddit, I just think Voat's policy of complete user freedom is going to end up creating a really terrible site.

Voat will never improve unless it's community becomes far less toxic and self destructive.

Can you elaborate? I've paid zero attention to voat.

So, where is the massive migration going? Is it voat.co? We could go back to Digg...

Digg seems to want Facebook and Twitter accounts for ID, so much less anonymity, so no. Digg won't be happening.

Digg isn't what it used to be. Now it's just a news site. No discussions, comments, voting, etc.

Nowhere, the majority of this is slacktivism at its best.

Considering many of us (myself included) were part of the great Digg exodus of 2010, and much of Digg came from Fark, I wouldn't be so sure. Link aggregators come and go.

If Voat can handle the traffic (which it can't atm), I'd probably switch.

2010 was pretty long ago, and i cant remember for sure, but i think fark got too shitty for me around 2004.

theres probably a lot of people that have been using link aggregators for 10 years, but really the majority probably havent even been at it since digg was still the go-to 5 years ago.

especially since it's summer.

/r/justsaynope[1] July 10 has been suggested as a no reddit day. Don't post, comment, or even load the site. Go through the weekend if you can. Edit: If every person that thought "this will never happen" actually went along with it, it would happen. There seems to be a lot of people upset and few willing to even find something to do other than reddit for a few days. I'm open to other ideas, but this is the only hope normal users have to make any kind of meaningful impact here. EDIT2: spread the message guys, copy this comment on big subreddits, comment on high karma posts, make posts with this message. We need people to see this in order to work and to hit where it hurts!

I close a reddit tab, open a new tab, and mindlessly type in reddit.com before I've even processed what I'm actually doing.
