Anybody accused of rape is innocent until proven guilty. We have a trial for a reason, and not every false accusation is by some conniving temptress in a dark smokey room either wanting to undo mankind. Circumstances can be messy, eye witness accounts are always imperfect and alcohol makes things like consent 10x more complicated. Rape is classed as more serious than battery and less serious than murder, and those standards for proof need to be and are applied, the purpose of trial - not that our justice system is perfect - is to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that rape occurred and we accept that some will get off free who committed rape because of these strict standards. These boogeymen stories popularised by tabloids and trolls are drops compared to the ocean of good convictions based on good evidence, and think of the motivation and historic setting of those lobbying for stricter standards, after all we don't exist in a vacuum. "She deserved it", "she shouldn't have gotten drunk" or "what did she do to invite it". No thank you, when there's an accusation it is tested to be false by the full force of the law, and is as good as the justice system in that respect.

As for accusations that are proven false, at present there are some laws in place that can be proceeded against claimants such as perjury and contempt of court. I hear anecdotally that righteous defendants, relieved to be vindicated as not-guilty, rarely chase it up, and in many ways it is difficult to prove without confusion as with all crime, but that's something that can and should be looked at. It's attempted murder almost, in my opinion, to try to rob someone of years of their life for a crime not committed, so of course the justice system can be improved.

All I would say, and I don't know you, is that when you find yourself jeering at the few percent of cases that are fabricated intentionally or unintentionally, (and again much less so than other crimes) just take a look to your left and right at who stands with you, the outspoken misogynists in the media, the traditionalists with their old-fashioned views about dress-sense, the fratboys who get piss-drunk and take no responsibility and actively cover things up, and the throngs of colleges that collude in covering up the epidemic of rapes on campus. With friends like these, who needs enemies.
