I just wanted to post my pictures of the HMS Victoria... :(

I tested this out by posting a picture of Old Vicky from shortly after the assassination attempt made 73 years ago today.

I just wanted to discuss an important and controversial historical figure. :(

I just wanted to post cool pictures of a Crown Victoria!

And then x-post them to Autos

cool pictures

crown Victoria

Choose one

He said the picture was cool, not the car itself.

Crown vic, the cop car, is quite cool. If I lived in the states I would probably have one.

I was trying to educate people on the Victoria Cross :(

just find a way to get through the filter.

Vic-tor-ia

Victor ia

Vic toria

etc

No. They're permabanning anyone who is supporting the blackout from /r/Pics.

I have yet to be banned after posting something in support of Victoria.

I was, when I questioned the ban I was told it was part of damage control

Filters developed and tested with FPH are working. They can regulate content of front page. No more Streisand Effect, no more grass roots organizing if Reddit Corp doesn't like it.

I'm just hijacking your comment to say that new posts in r/TodayILearned are also being hidden.

I just made a post there that had the word "Victoria" in it. Here is a screenshot but it isn't showing up in the new queue or in search anymore and it hasn't received any more upvotes or downvotes since the first minute when it was posted.

It's all based on keyword matching, and is trivial to evade.

Good enough to wipe out 90% and make the remaining 10% controllable by manual permabanning.

Have you seen /r/all?

It took some time for admins to take control last time too.

I think people just stopped caring.

You would have posts with 3k upvotes on rising that would never show up in the front page back then.

That's just not true.

http://imgur.com/0rTQ1jJ

Yes it was. The front page was heavily censored to keep the FPH outrage out of it. I dont see wat you are trying to prove with that picture.

That's the front page, like day 2 of the fattening.

Clearly it wasn't happening on the scale you say if that was up there.

day 2

posts were going up for like a week after the FPH ban. you could go to r/all/rising and posts with thousands of upvotes wouldn't appear on r/all.

Pfft... you think that's bad? have you seen /r/noall?

I finally got around to making my descendents joke!

I don't know about you, but it didn't take long for the /fatpeoplehate drama to disappear from my /all a few weeks ago... I doubt it'll be much different with this.

[–]_X____sign_here____ 21ポイント22ポイント  (19子コメント)

I disagree. Many people disliked FPH. When it was nuked, many people didn't care.

The problem isn't that the userbase will forget as quickly and stop posting about it... the problem is the suppression of those users will get stronger until they're no longer seen unless you actively look for them. Just like with FPH.

They have a bigger reason to suppress this than they did with the banning of FPH for the very reason you mentioned.

[–]_X____sign_here____ 22ポイント23ポイント  (1子コメント)

Yup. Then Reddit turns to myspace.

That's the ebb and flow of websites. Popular one day, tumbleweed factories the next.

It is Reddit's turn to die. The writing is on the wall. The admin are just helping facilitate it.

Well that didn't take long. Went from 20/25 posts about the blackout on my front page to 1/25 in the span of 20 hours.

the problem is the suppression of those users will get stronger until they're no longer seen unless you actively look for them.

This kills the Reddit.

Major subs are still going dark /r/Frugal just went dark in the last hour. This isn't going to just blow over like FPH.

When fph was small, it was actually fairly light hearted and funny. But as it grew it got nastier and more hateful until it was nothing short of a hate group, so I unsubscribed and stopped paying any attention to it. But that doesn't mean it should have been banned. People have the right to say whatever they like, and as a supposed free-speech platform (HA) Reddit should not have banned it. They were doing nothing illegal, and had good moderation preventing brigading and such. It was closed down because the admins disagreed with the premise, which is wrong wrong wrong.

They might cleanse the frontpage but as long as all those subreddits remain dark they will be forced to take notice.

it's huge if it's true, but think - anyone with an ounce of HTML and CSS knowledge could fake that and take a pic.

not saying it's not real, but offering a healthy dose of skepticism until we know for sure

Read this as well. I am very nearly convinced.

Edit: Maybe this is fake.

Edit 2: Here is evidence that it is fake. In light of this, we should remain skeptical of both claims.

I find the current management practices of Ellen Pao and the rest of the administrative team to be contrary to the core values that Reddit was founded on. I feel that the collective administrative team has fallen out of touch with the Reddit community. I support boycotting Reddit advertisers until positive change has been made between the management team of Reddit, the volunteer community moderators who run individual subreddits, and the community itself. More information can be found here.

This post-hoc remark was added by a userscript. If you would like to use this userscript and are having trouble, please refer to the document linked above or message /u/stupidgoddamnjerk.

Thanks for the find, but can you give a little more context as to what happened there, what it means and to the proof, preferably with archive links. This could be a very big deal.

EDIT: I'll just repost your other comment, for the others to see here. That should be enough. Thanks for the digging, great find.

u/OlympicHockey

Leaked screenshots of Ellen Pao show up. One is discussion with KnotKnox about changing usernames. The second is Ellen Pao ordering r/pics to be made public. Most assume they're fake. KnotKnox then says their PM's with Admins is their business and their business alone and asks each user that posts the screenshot to remove it basically confirming that the Ellen Pao leaks are real and the CEO is ordering subs public when they were protesting in private.

I heard the entire thing was constructed using HTML and CSS. it has to be fake.. right?

I would be very careful otherwise, but the response by the mod is a bit suspicious. I find it very strange though, to the point of being unbelievable that Ellen Pao (who somewhat unfairly and unproductively is often pointed out as the single culprit for everything going wrong with reddit) would take this direct action about this one particular sub. Banning certain subreddits, firing certain people etc. might be unpopular and against the interests of the userbase, but it makes sense in a certain context (commercialisation and monetisation). Having this one popular sub back up does very little in that regard. The only way in which it would make sense is that while a) it (also) provides content for the regulars it b) gives the outraged a channel to vent their frustration on the one hand while the overzaelous shitposts can be used as a tool to paint Pao and the company as the victims in order to muddy the waters on the other hand.

That's not really the issue though. Again it's the lack of communication, transparency and seemingly respect for the userbase, which provides the company with content and revenue.

It is as a courtesy to imgur that they want pics up so badly. Imgur traffic would be hit badly by continued pics blackout.

That's a very good point. I know there are now imgurians who view themselves as a different social group from reddit, but I still think that the vast majority of imgur posts go up and reddit, and considering the interlinked (financial) history of both sites, I can see why that would be even more important than IAMA or, other more text-based subreddits.

imgur and reddit are not loosely financially linked. The same consortium of investors has spent millions of dollar on both organizations.

imgur and reddit are, for all intents and purposes, two divisions of the same business.

You make a good to point for people who might be unaware who the shared interests between imgur and reddit. A substantial amount of capital for Reddit and Imgur comes from the same shareholders, creating synergy effects for these shareholders. This means that if reddit could profit as a company by going against the interests of imgur, it might still not be desirable from a common investor standpoint to pursue such actions.

I worded it the way I did to make clear, that in fact Imgur is not a duaghter or direct corporate affiliate of reddit. If the two companies were part of a single corporate entity it would be less of a problem actually, if management was focused on furthering the interest of that single entity, as all shareholders would profit. However, if both companies represent two different entities, that might actually be competitors (which is definitely true to some extent regarding the picture sharing market) the interest of shareholders who are invested in both companies is prioritized compared to those who aren't. Treating companies with a few shared shareholders as one entity is not only morally wrong, but also legally questionable. So, saying the two companies are essentially the same business is rather dangerous.

To be clear, I'm not attacking you for your comment, because what you described is exactly how it practically appears. The issue is that the management should not treat it like that's the case. And one more thing, we are talking hypotheticals right now, based on educated assumptions, because we still lack proper information and context. These hypotheticals still can help explain certain company actions and lead to a better understanding of why and how companies do the things they do.

[–]Affordable_Z_Jobs 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

Really hard not to take you for a corporate shill considering Imgur was built off of reddit.

To say they are not connected is fucking idiotic at best. One (imgur) only exists from the other.

You can mount all the arguments you would like about shareholder fuckery, but to dismiss Imgur's entire history discredit's you.

Plus you sound like a lawyer or a fuckwit with a thesaurus.

The lack of communication came when Pao took CEO. If you look at her work history of being fired, she doesn't like to work with a work culture but like to be a dictator. Since she is CEO she is responsible for everything good or bad that happen to reddit. She is not transparent even though it is a reddit rule; to be honest she puts ban hammers down and will not talk about anything.

All of this makes your point mute.

[–]Soular 0

Frankly its easy as hell to save a webpage and edit it. Try it. Right click this page, save as..., open it up with a text editor, control + F your name to find your it and at the end of the line you'll see your comment. Edit, save, double click, screen shot browser, done. Messages are no different.

So it would be impossible to tell, which of course makes me skeptical.

While there is no doubt to me that this probably an accurate depiction of her voice, I would prefer if you didn't compare the great and noble Emperor Sheev Palpatine to the vile and corrupt slime that is Chairman Pao

Oh god why did you remind me his fucking first name is Sheev.

Side note: While I like the name Sheev, I despise the concept of medicholrians.

There's nothing wrong with the name as far as Star Wars sounding names go it just sounds really fucking funny to me and I can't take the emperor as seriously.

I agree 100% on the midi-chlorians as well, but I really liked the way the Clone Wars cartoon handled them.

Yeah, but how could somebody just get into his account. Is that person stupid enough to give their credentials to some random internet stranger. Especially at times like these?

Now here's the thing that I don't understand. People know that reddit accounts hold on to this stuff and that accounts can be broken in to, why would they use Reddit to discuss this stuff? Why wouldn't they use email, phone, or chat? This all seems fishy.

Kristine (KK) has been on the modlist for 5 years. I can tell you right now, she is one of the admins everyone likes, and is setting herself apart from this. I mod 2 subs that have gone private, one of those being /r/iama, so you know I'm not some shill trying to get you all to shut up, but Kristine is not to blame for this. My best guess? The mods, without any admin input at all, put in an automod condition to flag the word Victoria in order to stop the relentless submissions around it, and try to get the sub back on track.

Thanks for the input. Would you speculate an automod filter for dominating topics is often used on r/pics to normalize its content?

Without a doubt. Before it was integrated into reddit, automoderator was on the list of well over 1000 subreddits. If you look at /u/automoderator's userpage now, you'll see just how many there are. It is a vital component to modding, and filtering certain topics makes things much easier for the team. As to what /r/pics has flagged, I cannot possibly say, but I'm willing to bet 'victoria' is.

This makes sense. It'd probably worry users less if the r/pics mods were more transparent about filtered topics. Then again, maybe that'd just make it easier to game the filter.

I think it's on track just fine- I like seeing these people shit on reddit. Wanna see more of it actually.

    <\rant>

I woke up expecting an official response from Ellen Pao. Instead they are just trying to censor and do damage control. There is no hope for Reddit anymore. Goodbye, old friend.

Let's be clear about what's going on.

Victoria is fired because Pao wants the site profitable so she can sell it and pay their debts for being ponzi-scheming fucks.

They're going to increasingly move the site towards corporate interests until the entire thing, particularly IAMA, is the same bullshit as corporate media is right now. Reddit will become Fox News the website, it's already been going that direction for a while.

Victoria's most under-recognized job was cutting the bullshit, shillery, and corporate propaganda from IAMAs, keeping them useful, and so actual hard questions were answered.

This doesn't make anyone money. It's productive and the right thing, but what corporation wants to be asked hard question by people with links to data at their finger tips?

They want to move towards videos, AKA, advertisements. There's going to be less scrutiny, more propaganda, more people mislead, more wasted money, more fat fucks, just everything bad. It's now a corporate platform and it will increasingly become one until Pao can afford to pay her debts, at which point it will be sold to the highest bidder, and the guillotine will drop.

Yup I'll get right on that Change.org petition. One day they'll alllllllll start working and make the site more than just clickbait city for armchair protestors who don't really care enough about change to do anything.

Tori is short for Victoria. It's also the name of some kind of military or cultural thing that I can't remember because it's not American.

Looking at the front page, it's a lot of shitposts that should belong to /r/circlejerk but seeing that outlet is closed...yeah...

And /u/qgyh2 will do what he's always dine in these situations, which is to say "absolutely nothing."

I wonder if there's a way to talk the RES guys into giving us a button to hide all subreddits (like /r/pics) who don't join the blackout?

But... I wanted to post my fascist confederate game on Victoria 2 where I colonized all of Africa and chose the "remove the undesirables" decision... :(

    Victoria Falls?

    Or was she pushed?

And now Harrowdown Hill is playing in my head. Thanks. I love that song. It's also pretty appropriate to this situation.

I can't believe I've never seen that video before. Awesome! I think The Eraser is better today that it was nine years ago.

You just blew my mind-- I can't believe it was a whole nine years ago that The Eraser came out. I know it seems cliche to say it, but it seems like almost yesterday.

Yep. I posted a picture of the HMS Victoria firing a broadside. Removed, as far as I can tell.

Could we be witnessing the beginning of the end for reddit? Is it about to become the next Digg? Where do we go next? After the disgusting censorship on their default /r/news sub concerning the TPP I'm ready for reddit to go away- looking forward to it actually.

    Fucking censorship. Fuck that shit.

Seriously, this is sickening and appalling at the same time.

    And I have proof!

It's just plain manipulation. At this point we can only assume they are doing it everywhere.

Reddit is over. All the jokes about chairman Pao are painfully true. The level of manipulation is on par with a traditional dictatorship.

Reddit decides what goes in the frontpage.

They're also banning anyone who posts anything "circlejerky".

Does this mean i can't post pictures of Victoria II?

I liked victoria. So what point are you trying to make. Do you own reddit?
