Notes
Obviously, you know that this site is not the Chromium official website. As a regular user (not an expert), I created it because I did not find a simple way to download good releases. I try to keep it as safe and fast as possible! ;) This is absolutely a non-profit site. Please, read the #privacy-policy (on the right side). In short:
- The official website is development oriented. Users are invited to download Google Chrome
- The official download page gives to users only Nightly builds (using the official Snapshots repository)
- This site (and especially its other page) give to users the best builds (using the official Continuous repository)
All downloads are from official sources only:
- Google Storage for official builds (Check the Buildbot ^^)
- SourceForge servers for other free and open-source builds
Explanation...
1. Project
Chromium exists since 2008. It is the free and open-source project (#features) behind the famous Google Chrome browser. Intrinsically, Chromium is a Google project maintained by many authors (developers, graphic designers...) from Google, Opera, Yandex, Samsung, Intel, Nvidia...2. Stable Chromium version
Officially, Chromium does not have a stable release. It is continually in development. Google Chrome is the stable release... but is not open-source.In fact, Chromium has a stable version. ^^
Example: The current stable version number on #linux is 43.0.2357.130. There are 130 patches which correct many issues. Because Chromium is open-source (#source-code), anybody can build it. You must be a developer to do this. Just get the current stable version (43.0.2357.130) from the official Git repository and build it! Add new features, correct bugs...
The stable version is used in:
- Google Chrome and Chrome OS (obviously!)
- Opera (Official Chromium developers)
- Yandex browser (Official Chromium developers)
- the FreeSMUG build, on #mac
- many #linux distributions
- other Chromium-based browsers
- other projects like Chromium Embedded Framework, Atom (text editor)
3. Development
Basically, Chromium has few versions every day, but you can stick with a version for about a month before you need to upgrade.Snapshots builds are compiles of the Chromium code whenever there are submitted code changes. A snapshot build will be created as long as the code compiles successfully. Each snapshot build is then run through the automated tests (unit, browser and layout tests). If that snapshot build successfully passes the automated tests, it is copied to the Continuous builds.
In resume:
- Snapshots: Untested and may be unstable versions (known as Nightly builds). Official download page
- Continuous: Tested and more stable versions (known as LKGR builds). Also used by Google Chrome channels: Canary, Dev, Beta and Stable.
4. Finally
This site uses the official Continuous repository. Moreover, there is no downloadable build with "failure" or other bad result on this website. My engine get directly results from the Buildbot. It does not read LAST_CHANGE text files.
So, I give you the opportunity to download only nice Chromium releases.
If you want, check the multilingual page: → download/
This entire website (#news and #api included) is auto-updated each hour by the server itself.
Thanks for your attention.
Have a good time! ;)
Features
Chromium vs Google Chrome.Chromium browser has:
- only open-source licenses (BSD license, MIT license, LGPL, MS-PL and MPL/GPL/LGPL tri-licensed code) plus unlicensed files
- a blue-colored logo
- the similar sandboxed processes as Google Chrome
- the similar UI and settings as Google Chrome
- the built-in Chrome PDF Viewer (known as PDFium)
- the built-in Chromoting Viewer (To use it, you need to first install the Chrome Remote Desktop app)
- the built-in Google Native Client
- the built-in Print preview and print system
- no stable version offered by the Google team (aka The Chromium Authors)
- no digital signature
- no auto-update system (Solutions: Use an #updater • Use PPA on #linux)
- no built-in Flash player (Solution: Check the #flash part)
- no support of proprietary codecs (AAC, MP3, H.264) (Solution: Check the #html5-audio-video part)
- no user RLZ identifier
- no user metrics (usage statistics) (opt-in option)
- no crash report (opt-in option)
- More details on the official site, focused on Linux.
More information about Google Chrome plugins
Some developers maintain forks of Chromium that offer more features and enhancements. Thanks a lot for developers! ;)
And if you want to follow new Chromium features, check the Google+ posts of an official Chromium developer
Flash
There are 2 types of Flash plugin for Chromium:- The PPAPI plugin: PepperFlash
- The NPAPI plugin: Flash Player (#npapi • Note: NPAPI deprecation)
PepperFlash is more secure because it works in sandboxed processes.
Great!
On Windows, Chomium find PPAPI Flash (.dll file) without command-line flags.
I tested on Win7 (64-bit) and WinXP (32-bit) with Chromium (32/64-bit) + Adobe's Flash installers → It works!
Now the tutorial is simpler:

Now, the full installation tutorial...
(If Google Chrome is already installed, go directly to the step 3)
1. Get PepperFlash (PPAPI)
This plugin is a non-free (proprietary) software developed by Adobe, and distributed bundled with Google Chrome. So get it from the official sources: Adobe or Google.1.1 From Adobe
Different official ways:- Stable version - Download page: Adobe Flash Player (Other versions) (Choose your OS and the PPAPI version)
- Stable version - Direct link: install_flash_player_ppapi.exe (Windows)
- Stable version - Direct link: install_flash_player_osx_ppapi.dmg (Mac)
- Stable version - Alternative page: Adobe Flash Player Distribution
- Beta version - From Adobe Labs (Search "PPAPI" and "Chromium" for your platform)
After install, the plugin path will be:
- On a 64-bit #windows:
- C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\pepflashplayer64_[version].dll (64-bit version)
- C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\pepflashplayer32_[version].dll (32-bit version)
- C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\pepflashplayer32_[version].dll (32-bit version)
1.2 From Google Chrome
Canary channel:- On #windows, get pepflashplayer.dll from Chrome Canary (64-bit) if you use 64-bit Chromium
- On #windows, get pepflashplayer.dll from Chrome Canary (32-bit) if you use 32-bit Chromium
- On #mac, get PepperFlashPlayer.plugin from Chrome Canary (64-bit)
Optionally, get the Flash version number:
(If you want to see the correct version number on Chromium internal pages)
- On all platforms, open the manifest.json text file in the PepperFlash folder.
- On Windows, you can do a right-click → Properties → Version, on the .dll file
2. Change the plugin directory
If you want, prefer a short path for the plugin. It will be easier for the next step. ^^Example on Windows: Put this .dll file in a path like C:\PepperFlash\ (Create the directory if needed)
3. Add command-line flags
By default, Chromium does not know PepperFlash exists.Use theses #command-line-flags:
- --ppapi-flash-path=[plugin path]
- --ppapi-flash-version=[plugin version]
- And optionally --allow-outdated-plugins to disable browser notifications about outdated plugins
On #windows, create a Chromium shortcut. Then go to its properties and edit the target field:
--ppapi-flash-path="C:\PepperFlash\pepflashplayer.dll" --ppapi-flash-version="18.0.0.160" --allow-outdated-plugins
On #mac, you will need to launch it from the command-line (in the Terminal):
/Applications/Chromium.app/Contents/MacOS/Chromium --ppapi-flash-path=/Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/PepperFlashPlayer/PepperFlashPlayer.plugin --ppapi-flash-version=18.0.0.160&
The "&" at the end is not a typo. It is there to make sure Chromium is launched in a separate thread. Without the "&", Chromium would exit as soon as you quit the Terminal. Moreover, to simplify the Chromium launch, check How to create simple Mac apps from shell scripts (Archive: 1). See the #comment-344 too! 4. Restart the browser
Relaunch it to apply changes.5. Check the installation
- Type chrome://flash in your address bar to check your Flash plugin used.
- Type chrome://plugins to see all plugins.
- For update, check the Flash Player version on the official page.
- For security information, see the security bulletins and advisories
6. Enjoy!
Now, even after browser updates, Chromium uses PepperFlash. ^^Get Flash Player (NPAPI)
Note: If PepperFlash is still installed, you needn't to install this following plugin!End of NPAPI plugin support for Chromium!
Chromium build 45.0.2416.0 (331982) is the last version which still has NPAPI plugin support enabled via chrome://flags or group policy registry (https://codereview.chromium.org/1158423003/#ps1).
Solutions to still use NPAPI plugins:
Jerry • Monday, 1 Jun 2015 • NPAPI deprecation

Solutions to still use NPAPI plugins:
- Use the --enable-npapi-for-testing flag... but available until when?
- or install an older Chromium version (Ex: 331982, 331959, 331938, 331935...)
- or install the IE Tab addon which allows users to view pages using the IE layout engine
- or use Firefox browser (Info about plugins)

By default, NPAPI plugins are disabled. So enable the option on chrome://flags/#enable-npapi (Screenshot). Note that if PepperFlash (PPAPI) is also installed, it will be the default plugin (screenshot).
For info, Flash Player is labeled Shockwave Flash in IE and Firefox.
HTML5 audio/video
By default, Chromium does not support proprietary codecs (AAC, MP3, H.264/MP4) in the HTML <audio> and <video> elements.ffmpegsumo for Windows users
On Windows, ffmpegsumo.dll is gone since 4 June 2015. I tested to replace chrome_child.dll but it did not work at all.

Focused on Google Chrome:
Browsers
This is my personal recommendation for desktop and mobile web browsers.Open-source browsers:
- Firefox
- Chromium
- Midori (WebKit)
- QupZilla (WebKit)
- Pale Moon (Firefox based)
- Waterfox (64-bit Firefox based)
- Cyberfox (32/64bit Firefox based)
- Tor Browser Bundle (Firefox based using Tor, an anonymity network)
- Dooble (WebKit)
- NetSurf (works on any OS)
- Otter Browser (It recreates classic Opera 12.x)
- or all other open-source browser in general.
Proprietary browsers:
- Opera (Chromium based • Opera team has created some browser features like tabs, speed-dial, internal proxy... • It exists since 1994)
- Vivaldi (Chromium based • Founded by former co-founder and CEO of Opera Software)
- Google Chrome (Chromium based • Google is the official hoster of Chromium project)
- Dolphin (Mobile browser for Android and iOS)
- Safari on Mac
I do not recommend:
- Comodo Dragon (Proprietary • Good and famous company but its Chromium is ever outdated compared to the #stable-chromium-version)
- SRWare Iron (Proprietary • No source code available since 2011, Archive: 1)
- Epic Browser (Proprietary)
- or other proprietary browser with "better privacy" than Google Chrome.
Why not recommended?
Because all of these browsers are closed-source, outdated and based on Chromium like Google Chrome and Opera! ^^ and you can do it all by yourself. More on #privacy...
Moreover, InsanityBit explains this very well on his blog: SRWare Iron Browser – A private alternative to Chrome? (Archives: 1, 2)
Note if a new browser with "better privacy" than Google Chrome is based on Chromium and is fully open-source, it should be ok for me. But... Google is famous. Its private policy and marketing strategy are well known. So you have to ask you some questions. Do you trust in an unknown team more than Google? Is an outdated Chromium fork? Google warms! (Archive: 1)
Few free and open-source Chromium forks:
- Aviator Browser (No wikipedia page, No private policy on site, Outdated browser, Info on Reddit)
- Superbird Browser (No wikipedia page, No private policy on site, Outdated browser)
- Iridium Browser (No wikipedia page, No private policy on site, Outdated browser, Info on Hacker News)
Privacy
For a better privacy protection, use open-source #browsers like Chromium or Firefox. Do not forget: It is open-source does not mean it is secure and respects user privacy (secure ≠ private). But, if your browser is fully "open-source", it means that somebody with the capability can review the #source-code. And with versioning tools like SVN or Git, it is easy for developers to find malicious code. This is better for secure browsing and user privacy! ^^1. Browser update
The reason for updating to the latest version is security. As security threats are found, they are fixed. Using an old version may expose you to a number of security issues. Browsers are far more subject to hacking than other software.2. Browser settings
- Do not log in with a Google account
- Do not save passwords in the browser (Prefer a free and open-source password manager like KeePass or Password Safe)
- Enable incognito (or private) mode (Ctrl+Shift+N shortcut • Use a #flag to start Chromium in this mode)
- Disable all options in the "Privacy" section because most of them uses an external Google service. Example: Google Safe Browsing about the phishing and malware protection (chrome://settings → [Show advanced settings...] → Privacy)
- Prevent any plug-ins from running automatically (chrome://settings/content → Plug-ins → Let me choose when to run plugin content)
3. Hosts file
Modify your hosts file to protect your OS from many types of spyware and malware:- hpHosts (A Malwarebytes product)
- Dan Pollock's list
- MVPS HOSTS
- Malware Domain List
- Peter Lowe's list
4. Search engines
Choose a web search/metasearch engine which respect your privacy:- DuckDuckGo (uses Bing, Yahoo!, Yandex, Wikipedia... results • To search without JS, choose the html or lite version)
- Startpage (uses Google results • No IP address saved, no cookie, proxy available...)
- Ixquick (uses Yahoo!, AOL, Gigablast... results • No IP address saved, no cookie, proxy available...)
- YaCy (A peer-to-peer search engine)
- MetaGer (uses Yahoo!, Yandex... results • No IP address saved, proxy and TOR available...)
If you are a web developer, do it yourself ^^
- MySearch (uses Google and other engines • Source code in Python • Author: @tuxicoman)
- Searx (uses many search engines • Source code in Python • Author: Adam Tauber, @Searx_engine • Fork: Searx)
- Googol (uses Google results • Source code in PHP • Author: Bronco)
Other metasearch engines: Ecosia, Unbubble, Privatelee, Mamma...
5. Extensions
Note: Extensions hosted on the Chrome Web Store are updated via the Chrome update mechanism (cf. Chromium source code) which developers and users do not control. Also, check #external-extension-installation if you want! ^^Free add-ons:
- µBlock Origin (Block ads, scripts and popups • Other alternatives: Adblock Plus, NoScript, Adguard, ScriptSafe, FlashBlock)
- µMatrix (Stop everyone from tracking you • Other alternatives: Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, Blur, RequestPolicy)
- HTTPS Everywhere (Shunt your connection to SSL whenever possible and will try to find secure versions of the sites you visit)
- WOT (Web Of Trust) (Display sites quality → A good way to prevent phishing and malware • Other alternatives: Webutation, Flagfox)
- Referer Control (Control the HTTP Referer on a per-site basis • Other alternatives: Smart Referer, Web Developer)
- ZenMate (Unblocks websites. Encrypts the browser traffic • Other alternatives: Hola, Gom VPN, DotVPN)
Note: µBlock Origin is pattern-based filtering, while µMatrix is matrix-based filtering which gives you more control over the filtering process. Using µBlock with µMatrix
6. Tools
- Firewall
- VPN
- Anonymous proxy
- Tor
- Freenet
- I2P
Also, read the official Chromium privacy
Just a last thing: If you disable sandbox in Chromium (with the --no-sandbox #flag), the Google team says to use another browser like Firefox because Chromium without sandbox is very vulnerable and insecure. This setting must be used only by developers.
Malware
You have downloaded Chromium and your antivirus detect a malicious software like a virus or trojan. It is a false positive. The detection is generic (heuristic). There is absolutely no backdoor or other malware inside. Remember that the full #source-code is available! More on #privacy...These reports are known for few years ago:
- https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=32751
Advice:
- Make sure you download Chromium from official servers (like on this site ^^)
- Prefer an open-source #updater
Free tools to check your system:

@558, Thanks for your Chromium updater. ;)
@Pai, The last version is 333350. Next version (333471) has not ffmpegsumo.dll.
• https://storage.googleapis.com/chromium-browser-continuous/index.html?prefix=Win/333350/ (Win 32-bit)

Even after enabling the command-line flags as per #flash, and making sure to update the last flag from:
--ppapi-flash-version=18.0.0.160&
to:
--ppapi-flash-version=18.0.0.194& (Adobe's latest version as per https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?fpchrome).
I finally found a solution ( https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1819231 ) which basically requires you to close Chromium, edit the manifest.json (/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/PepperFlashPlayer) by changing "x-ppapi-arch" "mac" to "x-ppapi-arch": "x64", save file, restart Chromium.
After doing this, chrome://flash/ finally showed "Flash plugin: 18.0.0.194 /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/PepperFlashPlayer/PepperFlashPlayer.plugin" (instead of "Not Installed") and chrome://plugins/ also showed "Adobe Flash Player - Version: 18.0.0.194" as enabled (instead of not showing up at all).
I hope this helps some folks if they are having the same issue.
Cheers,
It might be a bad virus definition update from Avast because I was using it for awhile, left it open and when I came back home, my shortcut wasn't working anymore. Avast deleted the chrome.exe. And when I tried to unzip it, Avast would delete it.
It also detected something in a .xul file (in AppData - forgot to note it)
Although I could have put an exclusion, I went back to 44.0.2383.0 to see if more info gets out about it.
I just tried to unzip it again and Avast didn't say anything. I'm writing this with 45.0.2442.0
So like I said, it is probably a bad virus definition update and it got fixed afterward.
Cheers!
@public.user, Very interesting! Thanks for sharing. I will update this site in few days.
@Anonymous, Check the #malware section. This is certainly a false positive.
