We as a country used to be terrible people and decided that black people were worth 3/5ths of a white person when deciding on representation, however now we can look back on those times and realize that we were terrible and make jokes about it in the hopes that it puts the notion of racial inequality behind us. reddit gold is used to show appreciation for certain things and crap so in this instance and as you pointed out, possibly other instances, this joke was funny enough for someone to spend actual money on the person.

Oh man, I saw this referenced somewhere the other day and I didn't get it (I'm not American). But I recently found out that to solve problems with population estimates among American colonies with large and small slave numbers or something they made 'non-whites' worth 3/5th of a person. Is this correct? Do you remember where i was referenced?
