As a result, we will no longer be working with the admins to put together AMAs. Anyone seeking to schedule an AMA can simply message the moderators or email us at AMAVerify@gmail.com, and we'd be happy to assist and help prepare them for the AMA in any way.

The important part. Well, it's all important, so read all of it.

So basically, the amount of high profile AMAs will drop significantly from here on out, right?

I assume the /r/IAMA team will try their best to make sure this doesn't happen.

We will do our best to try and maintain high profile AMAs, but obviously with the lose of chooter, it will be difficult.

Not really. The AMAs were helped by Vic, sure.

But at the end of the day they came to /r/IAma

You're vastly underestimating how much she did for this subreddit. Many of the AMA celebrities were people who didn't use Reddit, and so had no clue how to actually run one. Vic arranged, ran, transcribed, and generally made it a smooth process for everyone involved. Unless they somehow replace her with another physical presence, expect the quality of AMAs to go to shit.

Hopefully the mods will figure it out.

I'd rather the mods take it than some admin team even if quality drops for a time.

In the end, was this all for nothing?

It's not nothing to take control of one of the largest subreddits on the site away from the paid staff who utilise it as one of their biggest moneymakers.

And if the admins try to take it back...well then that's probably just pouring gasoline on the fire.

I know, I love it. Admins won't do their job? Fuck em, we'll do it ourselves

A very strong move indeed.

Why would they continue to go on supporting Reddit through their labor for free though?

Love for the work, a huge userbase, and proabbly holding out until a better platform than voat comes around to migrate to.

There was a lot of discussion on this, and we decided it was for the best at this time.

We really need some sort of assurances from the mods that they are not being hoodwinked - not here, we all believe you and we believe in AMA... But we also know there is a lot of money interested in ruining the successful format we have enjoyed. The overall impression people are getting from Victoria's departure was that reddit wants AMAs to be more marketing and less actual AMA, because that is what Victoria was so excellent at preventing.

I wish the mods the best on their quest to find a way to do this without her, and applaud their integrity.

The moderators have declared their independence!

[–]Silkku 3

I wonder how this is going to affect the quality of future AMAs though, from what I gathered Victoria has been doing a lot of work behind the scenes

[–]SUSAN_IS_A_BITCH 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think if anything it'll make the mods try harder to maintain or improve the quality of AMAs as a kind of "We can do this ourselves" statement. At first it may be rocky as they figure out their new system, but I don't think this will affect AMA quality long term.

I also expect to see a mod or mods in charge of calling AMA clients and helping them with the AMA, just generally doing what Victoria did.

They should add "TLDR: Read the whole fucking thing"

Now do an AMA with Victoria

[–]that_guy_next_to_you 184ポイント185ポイント  (14子コメント)

I'm a little surprised you came back this quickly

Don't be. It's the internet. 1 day passing is like, 3 weeks internet time.

For real. Try skipping Reddit for a day and you have 5 new memes, 30 inside jokes and so on. Keeping up is like a full time job lol

Word, last night felt like 2 weeks.

I agree, but in the end, what good is a voice if you aren't using it to express genuine thought? Well done mods.

Yea, same, for as big of a deal as this all was/is I thought keeping the sub private would last at least through the weekend.

Not surprising at all. They simple realized that a foot-stomping take-their-ball-home temper tantrum worthy of a six year old was not going to get them anywhere, and instead finally decided to try doing something potentially constructive.

I have to say you guys are a class act. You outclassed /u/kn0thing, Ellen Pao, and whoever is putting the financial pressure to monetize AMAs. Good job and fuck the man. drops mic

This still seems like an unsatisfactory outcome. Nothing seems to have been resolved, and there is just now a huge undertone of mistrust. Doesn't bode well for the future.

It doesn't. The admins dropped us in it and our easiest out was working with an unknown team. We're choosing a different option. We may have to space out AMAs a bit more now and the degree of handholding will also have to be toned down, but we think it's more important to have high quality AMAs rather than a high quantity of AMAs. And for now, we don't trust anyone else to maintain the level of quality we want.

It'd not over yet - the mods have taken Reddit's primary PR tool from the admins. The admins now either have to up their game or sack the IAMA mod team to get it back. Either way it'll be interesting!

Ellen Pao will be the end of reddit.

They can't fire her - she'll sue them for gender discrimination!

I feel she's taking advantage of the site for personal financial gain

And personal propagation of her political views

All aboard the voat boat

If they can improve their servers to handle traffic, I'm there

Picks mic back up, stares akwardly

"Uh, what he said"

Dude, don't take stuff you found on the floor. You don't know where it's been.

Agreed. I also think this was the right decision. I was concerned that r/iama mods would just quit and give control of this subreddit to corporate. This forces them to either pull back or push forward entirely. Good job.

There is no evidence this has anything to do with monetization

and whoever is putting the financial pressure to monetize AMAs

source?

Read the OP- the IAMA mods resisted attempts to let reddit inc control the flow of information in /r/iama because of concern about money changing hands.

The information we have requested is essential to ensure that money is not changing hands at any point in the procedure which is necessary for /r/IAmA to remain equal and egalitarian

[–]Yugiah 6

Yeah to me this is a huge fucking deal. Props to the mods for being outright about it.

I think this is an assumption based on the money changing hands thing by OP. Let's take a minute to research this and see if there is any foundation for it before it blows up into another Reddit conspiracy.

Everyone (including the admins) need to remember if you aren't paying anything to use the service, you are what's being sold. The reddit community is whats makes this site profitable. They make money off us, not the other way around. I'm not saying they need to cater to us, but the sheer greed of the execs is going to kill this site.

<3 Solid, you're awesome

Nice, lot's of talk of IAmA switching to pre-screened questions because of admin pressure. I hope that never happens and that the lines of communications stay two-way and direct.

Pre-screened questions will not happen.

How did the admins respond to this action?

There was a lack of foresight, organization, and planning. You can read through kn0thing's comments for an idea.

Considering "this action" happened less than ten minutes ago...

Can Victoria be named a Mod?

can we get back to rampart

Ugh, enough about Rampart. I just want to hear more about Rampart.

It seems like this is all blowing over too quickly.

Interesting definition of blowing over. The post basically says "fuck you Reddit staff, you fucked up for the last time and we're done with you, we can do this without you and frankly it will be more trustworthy and honest that way."

"We're done with you Reddit staff, but we're still gonna use your website and continue to provide a large amount of traffic"

I agree, it's a weak strike.

A bigger "fuck you" would be to move the system to another site/its own site. It's currently more like "fuck you.... But we still need all this infrastructure of the site you have in place, so we'll stay"

Making the subreddit private for one day isn't a strong enough message in my opinion.

/r/IAMA only went private to determine how they were going to function without Victoria. It was the other defaults and subreddits that turned it into a sort of strike.

And now the mods opinion here is that they'll still continue to make reddit money by hosting AMAs. Makes perfect sense.

[–]Silkku 6

Yeah, we barely made it to Winchester

...but I spent all night practicing mah pitchforkin'

Let's just hope reddit staff, know they now have to make some changes, maybe it would be great with a longer strike!?

I nominate Victoria to do the first new AMA

Has the mod team considered trying to build a separate AMA site apart from reddit? It seems like the admins no longer have the right ideas for what direction IAmA should be going. It'd be a good deal of work, but if it meant getting out from under the admins' thumbs, at least...

The issue is less viewers would come from it. This sub is already established and well known as well as accessible. A large majority of (my) the appeal of Reddit is one's varied interests all being on one site

I quite enjoyed it while subreddits were offline and admins crying for reopening them again.

Hahah yes. This is absolutely the best way. Now we'll know that there are actual people verifying the AMAs, not just random mid-level marketers.

Let's ditch this place and go where Victoria goes.

I want to buy you gold, but I don't want to support the admins...WHAT DO I DO?!

Donate to a charity in his/her name , dunno who Iamamods is tho, lol

Someone had the great idea earlier to give steam/amazon gift cards for the same amount as reddit gold! I would do that.

Victoria will be missed, and her lack of presence will definitely be felt in the coming weeks. I mean, how do the admins think this sub is gonna function without the woman that basically dictates almost all of the AMAs?

So are AMA's going to be less personable now? I really enjoyed reading several AMA's where you could tell Victoria and the guest were cracking jokes together with the way she answered.

Why did yall choose to re-open?

We want the community to persist. We never closed in protest, we closed to sort out what to do without Victoria. We feel we have reached a tenable situation and thus we are ready to get back to modding this subreddit.

Read the post. It's not that long.

This does not bode well for Reddit. Now the subs don't trust the admins and the admins REALLY don't trust the subs.

it's good to have some information out, I wish you guys (mod team) the best of luck in getting everything back in track. And I hope to see /u/chooter on here some more, if just as a user

That was the shortest-lived protest I've seen since /r/pics sold out back in '15.

This really is strange.

This subreddit is probably Reddit's most valuable subreddit in terms of positive press and who it attracts.

Crazy to see this much disconnect between admins and the mods of a sub this size.

Sorry folks. I'm dropping out.

Anyone seeking to schedule an AMA can simply message the moderators or email us at AMAVerify@gmail.com, and we'd be happy to assist and help prepare them for the AMA in any way.

Good to see that you're changing the way AMA are run so this doesn't happen again.

I still think you guys should continue with the blackout. This subreddit was the catalyst to the whole 'movement', and now that you guys are open again all the other subreddits will probably follow suit. Reddit needs some serious change and the only way to bring it is to continue protesting the admins practices.

Can we stop taking AMAs from fucking celebrities so often? All they ever have to talk about is some fucking movie or book they're shilling. Enough with the commercialization already. I just want to hear real things from real people.

Why don't we crowdfund this sup to pay her for this sub?

Yeah reddit administration kinda screwed the pooch on this one. Looking forward to seeing the no-admin handling of future AMA's

Tell us how you plan to cope with Pao's presence, not Victoria absence.

As a result, we will no longer be working with the admins to put together AMAs.

This is perfect. Shame you won't be getting paid to do this job however because you deserve it.

Thanks for taking matters into your own hands. Here's some reddit gol... Heres a pat on the back.

I wish Victoria came back ;(

Are they really going to let you do this? AMAs are probably the largest draw for this website. You exclude admins from the process and they're gonna take this sub over.

I understand that you went dark due to sheer necessity, but now that "going dark" has become a form of protest, do you think it might be more beneficial to stay dark a little longer with your fellow subs?

We haven't even gotten an official response through one of the Admin blogs.

Please consider at least leaving the sub restricted for now, you are the spearhead of this movement, hence why people cant scream at YOU to keep the reddit private.

You should've waited longer.

But muh pitchforks

Great work guys, keep it up! Even tho Reddit admins wants to destroy what you have been doing these past years...

Hopefully some form of resolution can arise.

What a sad day.

Good on you guys sticking it to the Reddit Admins, they have shown such a disregard and disconnect from this community.

It's gonna be hard for you guys to carry the weight of AMAs, but I believe in you.

What a complete mess. I feel bad for Victoria and the mods that have to deal with reddit admins. The admins seem to be the sweep-it-under-the-rug style people and that is not good for a place like reddit.

This was handled professionally. I will tell my grandchildren about blackout2015

Well, that was suspiciously quick.

Please go private again in the future, just as a protest. Maybe with other larger subs, on a predetermined day or something.

Not just to this particular fuck-up, but as a loud, deafening protest to terrible joke that reddit's administration has become.

One clear, loud message: we are not happy.

Either way, I'm so glad you had the backbone to do this. I'm sure there was plenty of pressure in you all.

I'm really amazed at what the power of the people can do. I know it sounds sappy, or sounds kinda out there, but this was a clear case of when people band together, they can and will cripple a functioning system.

Kudos to you for sticking to your guns! Clap Clap

Oh, and thank you /u/chooter for everything!

[–]Mlutes 1

Damn. This was handled fantastically. Proud day to be a Redditor. Disappointed at the way that the admins have handled this. Fuck them

Welp, reddit's going to hell in a handbasket. They'll soon turn into Myspace.

AMA request: Victoria Taylor

So, do we buy more pitchforks, or put them away?

AMA request: Jesse Jackson on his meds

I just want to thank you guys, the mods, for being respectful and not weaseling yourselves out of the situation.

[–]OP_IS_A_FUCKFACE 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

As a result, we will no longer be working with the admins to put together AMAs.

Damn.

I hope the reddit community can weather the storm that is the horrible administration of this site. This is a good first step.

As a result, we will no longer be working with the admins to put together AMAs. Anyone seeking to schedule an AMA can simply message the moderators or email us

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did the IAMA mods just... declare their independence from the Reddit administration?

Very classy and professional inspite of everything that is going on. I tip my fedora to you!

I'm glad you guys have a plan where the admins have failed. Serious respect for the lot of you.

I thought you guys would be out longer.

YES! I LOVE YOU GUYS AND SUPPORT YOU 100%. EFF THE ADMINS

What do you guys think about the future of Reddit as a whole?

Good on you guys. You're one of the few who haven't caved to the empty promises the admins are spewing right now.

Its your ball, take it and go home if those guys don't want to play fair.

And now the admins step in with damage control

Eating popcorn.gif

I think you guys should stay private a bit longer, we shouldn't let the admins let this blow over so easily.

So, in other words, Reddit will return to normal, winning the war. Reopening doesn't hit them in the pocketbook, making them question their admin decisions.

"...we cannot be sure that everything is being arranged honestly and in accordance with our rules. The information we have requested is essential to ensure that money is not changing hands at any point in the procedure which is necessary for /r/IAmA to remain equal and egalitarian. As a result, we will no longer be working with the admins to put together AMAs"

claps hands

Any ama run by the admin team is going to be shit on by the site, interesting to see how it turns out

So this thing lasted about one day?

Why isn't Victoria doing an ama on all this?

Is there a Voat alt to Ama yet?

Welcome to the new world.

Good luck guys. Watch your backs, ok? Backup plans; make them. That game is probably not over for CorpoReddit.

The biggest "Fuck You" to the admins of reddit in recent history.

Great work, and now we wait for the slow tragic fall of reddit.

Voat.co is a good alternative for anyone interested. It is upgrading now to handle all the new users, and so bookmark it for later.

Thanks again, on behalf of all moderators and users of reddit. This was a risky move on your part, but an important stance to take.

Any plans to see if /u/Chooter would be willing to work with you guys? I think having her completely on your side would work in your favor, as her experience would be a big benefit to the new system of conducting AMAs. Hopefully her firing doesn't mean she can't help you out.

Make /u/Chooter part of the /r/IAmA mod team, and let her continue? If she wants to, of course.

Why don't you make /u/Chooter a mod here?

Fuck you, bring back Victoria

So what you are saying is everyone needs to fill u/kn0thing's message box with dic pics... This is of course a question as I'm unclear of the message.. I'm just trying to clarify what the OP has stated..

I of course wouldn't condone the idea of sending dic pics to u/kn0thing's mail box...

all this shit.. and I just want to know the answer to one question: why was she let go?

Haven't you missed the part where your shutdown sparked a mass protest about Reddit mods not being supported by the admins here?

But, but I have pitchforks!!

Lock it back down man. Reddit needs to burn.

The information we have requested is essential to ensure that money is not changing hands at any point in the procedure which is necessary for /r/IAmA[4] to remain equal and egalitarian. As a result, we will no longer be working with the admins to put together AMAs. Anyone seeking to schedule an AMA can simply message the moderators or email us at AMAVerify@gmail.com[5] , and we'd be happy to assist and help prepare them for the AMA in any way.

And there it is, the knife cutting into the very fabric which makes up the veil of opaque Reddit to reveal what the users want - transparency.

Bravo.

why is my front page blank though? its been like that for a few days, even though im subscribed to different subs

Most subs went private so you can't view any content on them

I wonder if there are any volunteer redditors who would be able to facilitate AMAs and whose expenses could be covered with crowdsourced Paypal. Preferably someone with a reputation for conducting interviews for an online audience. Maybe someone with experience doing just that.

Good work.

What these people are doing effects every one of us, and I support you and the blackout 100%.

It just won't be the same with Victoria..

Never change a running system

Love that this is on the front page with 30 points. The whole solidarity thing is really shutting shit down.

What will become of the AMAs that were scheduled to occur during the downtime? Will they be rescheduled?

We would love to reschedule them! Anyone interested can email us at amaverify@gmail.com and we will get everything set up and moving forward.

Good luck to you guys, thanks for all of the work you've been doing

I love you guys!

I'm just glad that we're back. I'm all for making life easier for mods, but hopefully in a way that doesn't make everyone jump ship. I like Reddit! I want it to stay and flourish!

One question, now that I think about it, do you guys foresee a solution that benefits everyone during the time you took offline (and I assume discussing with the admins)?

I find this all to be very funny.

I really doubt things will ever be the same from this point on. But good job for bringing /r/IAmA back, hopefully it won't be completely destroyed at this point.

I cried the entire time all the subbreddits were private.

Good luck in the future. I know it may get a bit harder to work out AMAs but I think the mods can do it.

What does this mean for the AMA's already scheduled?

Thanks for bringing it back, and hopefully you can set a proper /r/iama without Victoria.

All the best to you guys!

now if only the 'solidarity' blackouts could set their subreddits public again as well so I can go back to redditing...
