Looks like /r/fatpeoplehate went dark too.

[–]tha_real_stabulous 0ポイント1ポイント  (2子コメント)

Seriously though, they said on the live thread that /r/circlejerk went dark but it's been down for a while before today.

It was down, then back up, and now it's down again with a parody description.

That's true, but it did change its reason for going private to something mirroring that of IamA and the other subs, so it's at least somewhat in support as of now?

it's been dark for some time

After the FPH drama, they're definitely used to it.

Apparently not enough to fix their shit so it works.

There is no such thing. The kind of traffic spike you see in this kind of spillover event is tens or hundreds of times your normal maximum traffic. Back when the "digg hug of death" was a meme, lots of web devs posted traffic charts--a site expecting a few hundred or a few thousand visitors an hour can't magically scale up to hundreds a second. The investments required would sink a site of almost any size.

Azure and EC2 can both handle this just fine with their "elastic load balancing" options. You just have to write software that can handle new machines spinning up when your traffic spikes.

So why does Reddit itself still go down so often? Weren't they using such a service?

Explanations are here, http://www.redditstatus.com/history

But it's usually not a scaling issue, but some other issue. There's a lot to running a site like reddit.

They provision manually. Hence giving all of their servers cute names, etc.

Sure... but be prepared to scale up your wallet, too.

For a couple of hours. It's not nearly as bad as provisioning for spikes yourself. It's pretty much the cheapest option.

Assuming that advertising is your revenue source, you can't afford to go down, and you may even make money on scaling up.

Which costs more. Having that elastic load balancing is a cost that most sites will never need to deal with.

There's also the issue of bandwidth. You still need to be paying for access to a massive pipe (with the elastic load balancing you pay for the potential need to use it) to deal with the influx. It doesn't matter if you're running multiple servers efficiently if your internet can't take the influx.

[–]tha_real_stabulous 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

oh come on, it's a tradition. If anything, the fact that voat goes down every time more than two people think about it at the same time is proof that it can play in the same league as imgur, 4chan, and reddit.

As a sysadmin-ish, scaling up this quickly isn't easy.

I feel like somebody needs to go give the operators of voat a hug.

This made me join. Not that I'm leaving Reddit, because I'm not. All this drama is temporary, but it made me at least go look at Voat. And I have this to say....

Holy shit, it's almost a photocopy of Reddit. If things go bad here, we can just go there if they got their traffic issues in order.

I wonder if they could be sued into oblivion, though. It's legitimately a ripoff.

Ripping off the concept of a site is not illegal.

[–]Zanir 7

I don't really understand. Was Victoria a particularly important person? She seems to have been fired for a reason nobody really knows yet, so I'm uh... at a loss.

Victoria coordinated all of the celebrity AMAs (or all of the important AMAs? Not sure).

They fired her without considering how any of the AMAs that are coming up in the next few days are going to be conducted. One of the /r/books mods was over at /r/subredditdrama wondering how exactly they were supposed to contact the several authors that have AMAs coming up.

TLDR Victoria made the whole system work, and without her it instantly breaks.

Read Karmanaut's /r/outoftheloop post for a much better explanation.

[–]Zanir 1

Ah, I understand now. Thank you.

Not to mention that one guy flew out from California today to do an AMA only to find that Victoria wasn't there.

She's also was volunteering to work unpaid to coordinate AMAs that were upcoming so the mod teams weren't left hanging, but is not allowed to by the reddit admins.

She was probably the best admin there was in terms of communication between a dominos and mods, and now that she's gone, the mods of large subs are getting fed up with site admins for their inaction for the good of mods.

I understand how important she is, I'm just racking my brain as to what was so heinous that she was fired so quickly. If they had planned to fire her, they would have brought someone up to speed to replace her. This seems like they had no intention of firing her, but she did something majorly wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I love /u/chooter's AMAs, but this looks like she did something very bad.

Or management is incompetent and didn't think the blow out would be this big. Wouldn't be the first time they didn't put in place contingencies.

That's true. They could be complete asshats for all we know.

Also, from what I've seen, mods are more upset that there was no communication from the admins regarding her firing. They found out through someone who was supposed to do an AMA today, and talked to reddit. It's the anger over a continuous trend of admins failing to help/communicate with mods.

That makes much more sense! Thank you!

That's true. They are complete asshats.

I feel weird about all their public comments, it's always BLA BLA give us Money! It feels like a huge money grab.

The site is run by two college students who are actually losing money currently from server costs. It may sound like a money grab but they actually do need the money to keep up and running. It doesn't help that Paypal suspended their account as well.

AFAIK its ran/hosted by one guy without any monetary support from any company trying to scale with a website that has a multibillion dollar company behind it. I'd ask for money too.

who is the multibillion dollar company?

On top of that, he's a student.

Damnit Voat, why can't you learn and get scalable hosting

Something interesting to note is the deleted comments that can be found here. They appear to be from /u/Agnostalypse -I can still see them on his userpage. Does this mean that those comments have been deleted by a mod and not him?

Also, I screenshotted the comments in case they disappear from his page. You can see them here and here.

I know, I have a nasty habit of having tabs open for various projects. Right now I have a million research tabs open for a homeopathic podcast parody I'm planning. Sorry you guys can't snoop on my tabs, I know that's the best part of some screenshots! ;)

One sentence in two hours of silence gives the most potent podcast strength.

This is going to be very interesting.

    I'll say!

Can I give a suggestion (maybe an unpopular one), no matter how dumb this gets, I recommend to not call Pao names (like Chairman Pao). There really is no point to it and just degrades any actual conversation/criticism.

Just a thought while this is not the biggest thing on reddit.

I don't think that's an unpopular opinion. I totally agree with you. Inevitably, there will be users who blame Pao for this, but this time I think the anger directed towards the admins as a whole.

Yeah. I think we should wait before we actually decide that they are evil (it's possible that Victoria was justifiably fired). I think it is safe to say that the situation was poorly handled!

The admins have a history of handling things poorly, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Yeah, what are we at, way over 50 subreddits?

No idea, the OP of the post in /r/SRD hasn't updated it yet. This shit is crazy! Is this the end of Reddit?

I highly doubt it, but it has not been a good month for reddit.

I was with reddit for the ban of FPH (though handled poorly), because the other side was hateful, sexist (very) and racist.

But this admin blackout/ everything that /u/kn0thing has said in the past hour is super unprofessional and dumb.

Haha yeah, I can't believe he said this. It's like he's trying to piss everyone off.

At this point, we dont know. These are dark times my friend.

Yeah, the whole situation is unfortunate since it could have been easily prevented if the admins had communicated with the mods of /r/iama.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/3bxduw/why_was_riama_along_with_a_number_of_other_large/csqffa0

I think that thread makes a really good point. While it may not be directly the fault of Pao, it still definitely reflects on her, especially when people are so against her in the first place.

I don't disagree that you can blame (up to a point) the CEO of reddit for it's failings (the past hour would be a great example of that), but my point was to not call her Chairman Pao and (adding further now) to do death/rape threats against her. The racism/sexist going against her recently was just dumb. That does not mean criticism/blame is not fine.

Oh! Sorry, I miss understood. I absolutely agree with that.

We really need to emphasize that while /u/Chooter's departure is unfortunate, it's only a catalyst for what we're seeing now. All the mods deciding to shut down their communities are doing it because of the lack of communication from the admins and underappreciation for the volunteer work they provide to run their communities.

Agreed. If this was JUST Victoria, it wouldn't be blowing up to the degree that it is.

Yes, I meant for my question to mean more about how she felt about being the catalyst for all this.

Oh, your question is good. I just meant in general. A lot of the news articles that you're posting in the live feed only focus on Victoria as the reason for all of this, which is partially untrue.

/r/fallout might be up but /r/FalloutMods is set to private

Karmanaut's explanation is still up, afaik. None of us at OOTL have removed it, and it doesn't show as being removed in his comment history.

      Damn, they deleted karmanaut's post?

/u/Clockwork757 I refreshed my cache, comment is still there.

/u/SlendyTheMan Looks like /r/fallout is down again

Internal moderator fight going on? Possible. Any /r/fallout mods around?

I messaged the main subreddits I use, /r/Hpfanfiction, /r/2007scape, and /r/mindcrack, as I know most of the moderators. They're expected not to join in, as they are small enough not to matter. /r/hpfanfiction already has said they won't.

Did they or did they not delete karmanaut's post?

The post about karmanaut's post getting deleted, has been deleted.

9 out of 13 defaults now??

Man stop posting about subs that wont be going dark. The feed is moving too fast already.

With the default spreadsheet, might it be possible to specifically mark the ones who are explicitly not going dark as opposed to those who might still?

/u/Chooter, I'm curious to know what your opinion on all the subs going dark for you is? And I'd also like to say that I and the community appreciate everything you've done, and I wish you nothing but the best.

Holy shit just read through /u/kn0thing's comments, that guy is a complete arrogant tool. He's making fun of the people that are doing his fucking work and are concerned about the quality of reddit. If this guy is in charge of /r/iama from now on that sub may as well stay private.
