Well, you can expect the Gaming Media, which has not a shred of integrity left to it, to engage in plenty of yellow journalism, and with a very hostile tone towards Star Citizen. It's all about the politics. The Media is filled with Social Justice Warriors pushing a political agenda. They claim the right to smear, defame, edit, censor, and even ban anything that runs afoul of that agenda:
Star Citizen has a target on its back, for the following ideological reasons:
1) The back story does not put large, centralized government in a very kind light. For a Progressive Movement that is about to achieve stealth Global Governance through the Trans Pacific Partnership, this is intolerable;
2) Star Citizen is, shall we say, ever so slightly PRO GUN, and pro-2nd Amendment. This alone will gin up buckets of vitriol and bile from the SJW crowd;
3) Star Citizen's fan base is 98% male. Obviously, the SJW expect CIG to rewrite the game until it appeals predominately to females. Which is never going to happen short of turning it into a 3D Candy Crush Simulator. But Harpies Gonna Harp...and nag, and engage in any manner of histrionics;
4) Star Citizen is unabashedly pro-capitalist. If the SJW were writing the story, the year 2944 would see the final victory of communism, and every comrade would be flying a government supplied Aurora, obediently working the job assigned to them by the UEE. Imagine a game like that, where after you sign up, the GAME TELLS YOU what your career will be;
5) Due to reason #4 above, Star Citizen is also very individualistic, celebrating the ethics of hard work and good old fashioned gumption. Individualism is anathema to the cultist group think of the SJW crowd.
So, of course when they had the chance, they jumped on the misleading headline of "indefinitely delayed". Meh!
The article doesn't say anything that wasn't already said in Chris' letter, so we already know.
Indefinitely simply means a little while longer, while they resolve the problems with the netcode.
I wouldn't get my panties in a bunch over it.
+1 Gotta agree with your statement.
Obivously its better that CIG releases a good product, than just throwing what they got out to the public like many major publishing firms do.......to mention a certain batman game they had to stop selling due to it.

Thing is.. they can say delayed indefinitely, but at the same time.. wtf are the doubters and those of you who don't seem to understand that building this from the ground up and rebuilding certain things that cannot support (netcode) what they are doing takes time, wtf are all of you and the doubters going to say when those weekly updates that CR promised in regards to the FPS going to say then. Not like any of the doubters can wave their magic wand and fix the same issues.. but yet they will still complain. I say screw them and will be like the parent on a long ass road trip with the kids... We will get there when we get there now sit down, shut up and look at the pretty countryside we are driving through.
Ya ever get the feeling that the loudest complainers are from the "We Want It Yesterday" generation?
If i go an develope something the following happens, example i start in january.
- January, i start and set a Goal for April. - I do Reviews of the work done in regular timeframes either by the time or work done. - I have Goals of the sub-modules for that product. - If in danger of not meeting these goals i will do a breakdown lets say after half of the time. - Before time runs out i do a "final Review" with a summary/breakdown how much of the work has been done and eventually whats left.
And exactly by that time i would have expected that CIG would have placed an post, sorry guys, we not gonna make it, in fact it we only have approx. 40% of the work done.
What CIG did? They didnt do anything, waited till the moaning started, did a post, waited again a long time, just placed ridicoulous comments in other posts or streams, finally they said sorry, we dont know how long it will take but it will need some more time.
This is why i lost any faith in CIG and what they are doing. For the case you describe open development as "we dont have control and no visibility about what we are doing" i would be really worried and all others should be as well as this could mean CIG would maybe have enough funds or maybe need another 100 Million.
Yes, i never worked for the Software industries but i'am working in IT for almost 20 years and i did some Project work myself and more important, i worked with People who where actively driving for results also in pretty large Projects. I also know if it comes to a critical Point that some People tend to say, we dont need to tell them everything. And yes, the second Option is the one which is more likely to me here, as much as i didnt appreciate it but it really have the Impression after this Story here.
unfortunately, the naysayers are usually the loudest. the negativity brings everybody down. this game is only in its infancy. when you see something cool, its only natural that you want more and you want it now.
Avoiding dates is our goal, but it just gets you articles about how the game is delayed indefinitely :)
It's frustrating, because 'delayed indefinitely' is usually PR code name for 'they gave up'; Starcraft Ghost isn't cancelled, it's delayed indefinitely (... and the staff has been reassigned to other projects and it will never happen unless we decide to reuse the name someday)... Star Marine is delayed indefinitely only in so far as we don't have a release date to give you today... but we're hard at work fixing the issues we've identified, with more people involved than ever before (some of our top guys are in Denver this week, in fact!) And we're going to tell you how that's going until it happens. Hopefully folks who take the time to actually read Chris' messages can make up their own minds.
I think the decision to not give a definite release date and instead keep us updated with weekly postings, was the right one.
As long as you let people know what the latest blocker is, I don't mind the delay until release.
I honestly believe this would be the solution folks.
Doesn't have to be very detailed or even deadly accurate, but at least set some high level expectations and then keep updating them as you go....
granted that CIG could have talked about the issues earlier but in most ways they have. Look back at the reports and read what they are talking about, plus keep in mind that they were trying to get it all together for Patch 1.2.
As for being an IT, I am as well for about just as long and yes.. you do have to keep the stakeholders in the project updated, and just like the fans here.. some of the stakeholders may or may not understand the reasoning behind why there are delays because they do not have the expertise in the field.. They just want the project completed and if they have their way, you know as well as I do that projects can then be rushed before they are ready.
On one hand what CIG is doing is great from a bystander viewpoint.. We are watching this game being built... but then again... it can be like watching paint drying on a wall... especially when there are setbacks.
Thing is.. anyone who says that CIG has not been transparent during this process... ehh.. I think they need to redefine their expectations on transparency. For myself, I feel that they are doing what they need to do and keeping us in the loop. I do not feel the need to get day by day updates (not that is what you were advocating) but while i do understand your point... I just think CIG should keep moving forward and doing what they are doing to get this issues worked through and improve the overall experience and continue giving the updates as they have been.
Ben Lesnick, ultimate master of patience. You deserve a medal with a smile on it.
It's time to create a new slogan on this forum: "Yes, we can... wait."
I'd wear that medal for sure. In fear of watching this thread just plummet into some kind of senseless brawl I'll just say I think they've done an admirable job telling us about the concepts and development components that need to be done, are being done, and that must come together for the end-products. I for one continue to happily ride along with this project -- good job to all of you at CIG, it is clear you are committed to pushing boundaries and creating something we all want to be proud of.
I think, there are a lot of misconceptions floating around... but lets start small, shall we?
1.) This game will take years to be written. If I compare other titles in the past with this, only few games come to my mind. Lets say, something like Skyrim but just 10 times the content and stuff that has to be implemented to run it. (If thats even enough)
So, such games take time. A project like Skyrim would take... lets say: 5 years of production time. The game studio will work on it for 4 years and in the last year, they will start to roll out stuff to the public and the media. The result is, that the impression of a fan would be, that they only need a year to work on it, but its in fact 5 or more.
If you open up the Dev-process, you will sit along all those 5 years and with expectations of the average joe, most of the community would scream "Vaporware" at a certain point, because they are sick of waiting. But in both cases, if you open up the Dev-process or let it be closed, you wait 5 years. People around here screaming for "losing trust" have... to be honest, absolutely no idea about game development and just post to get a little attention - which it pretty morbid if you think about it for a second. They try to damage the work of over 500 people and kick on the dreams of about 1.000.000 people just to get a little attention. I guess I should stop here analysing those people as you all should be aware of what I think about those people by now. (And they deserve it)
Thing is: With the scale of Star Citizen, I guess that this game will take about 4-5 years of development time to get the skeleton out of the door and another 3-4 years to refine it and fill it with flesh and soul.
2.) Other game publishers don't like Star Citizen, as Star Citizen poses a threat to them. An independent project with massive amounts of funding (which leaves them behind) and a massive amount of players which will, when successful, have a game in their hands that will leave them away from any other sub-par game for the next 10 years. Which means: If the game is successful, another big chunk of players will join the game, lets the other major AAA titles in the store rust away and the industry is forced to bring another title at roughly the same quality level as Star Citizen - which will cost them more than 80M bucks. So they do not only lose money, but also a good chunk of the fundament they try to make into money. As such, the press will by more or less legit methods be "paid" to make bad publicity about Star Citizen. I'm talking here in an indirect way. I don't think, a press company will take oben bribes, because the bad PR out of that will destroy that press company, but they will try more underhanded methods.
3.) The press cannot expect to get any form of "sponsoring" from Star Citizen, as the bigger publishers do. (Making Ads on their webpages/magazines) The motivation about not being positive towards SC should be clear here. I'm not saying negative - but they have no reason to be "nice" beside losing their customers if they overdo it with the negativity.
4.) As already said: Harpies Gonna Harp. Its similar to point 1, but expanded to the whole net and not just this forum.
Cry woe, destruction, ruin and decay: The worst is death, and death will have his day.
AC feels sort of "cramped" & "Arcadey". The flight feels a tad too responsive and artificial. Also the way the POV is positioned I feel like the cockpit is just a physical extension of the HUD and literally in my face. I'm just not getting the vibe that I'm sitting in a machine yet. I feel more like an implant than a human sometimes.
Star Marine i hope is something that truly turns the Star Citizen modules into feeling like a finished product. All the small details that are needed make the game feel non-'alpha-ish'
Ya know how War Thunder "feels" like its finished but the overall game isn't? That sort of representation is what I sort of expect nowadays.
You guys are awesome, so I wouldn't anything less :D
P.S on a side note, to any devs on this thread. Whatever happened to the Retaliator Commercial? Is it still on the drawing list or is SM development really being a b&%@ lately?
Cheers!
To some, war is a time of terrible sacrifice and loss.. but to others it is a time of great opportunity
We all know it's delayed and there's no better way to make people click on your site than posting up dramatic, sensationalist titles that play on semantics to get people riled up.
Avoiding dates is our goal, but it just gets you articles about how the game is delayed indefinitely :)
You have not avoided dates. You have made the dates confusing and hard to track down, but we have always had estimated release dates from CIG. The current information we have is that the FPS, planetside, Arena Commander 2.0, first chapter of Sq 42, and the alpha of the PU will all start this year. This is a problem because more and more backers simply no longer believe these dates are possible or believe that CIG was lieing when they gave those estimates.
Open development should not mean telling us over and over that everything is wonderful and will be available "soon".

Is Roberts Space Industries biting off more than it can chew with what is surely one of the most ambitious games of all time?
Good question..
Better them then current publishers that release "finished" AAA franchise titles and are still trying to patch their netcode 18 months later while nerfing aircraft and leaving that fact out of patch notes. Can be skeptical all you want but acting like some other publisher is more qualified when all current ones release broken buggy games and garbage on a monthly basis is just weird. Some major titles released last year with issues: Assassins Creed 5 - model and rendering issues, animation issues, game instability and unstable frame rate.
Patch 3 includes over three hundred fixes designed to improve your Assassin’s Creed Unity experience. While you might notice some improvements to framerate as a result of Patch 3, we still have a future patch planned to further address framerate concerns.
Destiny - FPS issues on xbox one network issues PS4 sign in issues took 2+ months to fix, lack of content as excuse for dlc world of warcraft - warlords of draenor : server overload leading to extensive queue times due to 4+ million users coming back. Easy fix but blizzard has done it enough to know better, and this is after the fiasco known as Diablo's release.
I spent money on the "dream" because I'm tired of developers releasing broken titles, something most people who come whining about delays pretend doesn't happen.

And we're going to tell you how that's going until it happens. Hopefully folks who take the time to actually read Chris' messages can make up their own minds.
That's all fine and good sir, but please release something new to the community in the mean time. Maybe release the AC balance update, or star map or new AC mode etc. The way things are going, if the delay goes on for several more months a large portion of backers will leave.

No worries on that account - as Chris said in the letter, the AC team is reformulating their release plan so we can have some changes out sooner (and after that, more regularly.)

Cheers!

We all know it's delayed and there's no better way to make people click on your site than posting up dramatic, sensationalist titles that play on semantics to get people riled up.

Open development should not mean telling us over and over that everything is wonderful and will be available "soon".

Some major titles released last year with issues:
Assassins Creed 5 - model and rendering issues, animation issues, game instability and unstable frame rate. Destiny - FPS issues on xbox one network issues PS4 sign in issues took 2+ months to fix, lack of content as excuse for dlc
world of warcraft - warlords of draenor : server overload leading to extensive queue times due to 4+ million users coming back. Easy fix but blizzard has done it enough to know better, and this is after the fiasco known as Diablo's release.
I spent money on the "dream" because I'm tired of developers releasing broken titles, something most people who come whining about delays pretend doesn't happen.

Delays are fine - just stay in touch frequently.
