Yeah, it's great.

Top 20 ?

By the end of Wimbledon I wouldn't be surprised if she drops out of the top30.

Oh well atleast she can find solace in Gulbis who was top20 in March, just to be outside of the top90 before Wimbledon.

Ummm she lost her match 4 hours ago and with that loss is now ranked 25th or something. She lost to a qualifier ranked 150+.

What's the story behind this?

She says she doesn't believe in wishing the oponent good luck before a match.

Quote:

‘It’s nothing personal towards her, I just don’t believe in wishing my opponent good luck before the match,’

and here the source.

That's fair enough but surely she can shake someone's hand without wishing them luck.

Crazy how something so logical to you and me can be so out of this world for Bouchard right?

[–]dragonsky!

hah, you know..even though I might get hate for this..I can see where she's coming from.

It's probably no different than Rafa's supestitions.

It's just something she believes in. And let's be honest when I say "good luck" i don't really mean "oh man, you better have all the luck out there today!" i mean "oh man have fun out there, don't get hurt and in the end shake my hand when i'll beat you" so ..eh..I don't hate it

shaking someones hand isnt about wishing them luck, its just good sportsmanship.

Yea I think it is more a sign of respect for the hard work and effort your opponent has put in.

Why don't you just say: "good game"?

[–]dragonsky!

Ask Genie :D

Maybe because she feels it's hypocritical.

Besides it's not a rule to shake someone's hand.

I mean..I get it you guys, it's not a big deal to shake someone's hand, it's just a random thing you do like saying "hello, how are you" even though you don't care how they really are but..in Genie's mind it's a big deal probably

[–]Punks_StaphInfection 6ポイント7ポイント  (0子コメント)

At the fedcup they were supposed to shake hands, but bouchard is a bitch, so she didn't want to

It was a shock to me when she was named the most marketable athlete. She's not very well liked in her home province (Quebec) for several reasons and that even really just confirmed what everyone suspected: she's a clueless snob.

[–]Sehs 11

Who's that who doesn't like her in Quebec? I'm going to go ahead and assume it might be some French media or something like that because she's a Westmount anglophone?

It's part of it, but not the whole thing.

You can find some of it here, in French

http://quebec.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/05/26/rejean-tremblay-eugenie-bouchard-petite-baveuse-reputation_n_7442722.html

In short, she received the Athlete of the Year award and has rarely if ever acknowledged it. She plays hard to get with Canadian journalists, treating them as any other media. There's also the whole connotation that her parents are turning their backs on their own culture; someone with a last name like Bouchard who lives in Montreal yet speaks French slightly better than Harper speaks French is always weird. Her official website also had no French version; she insists on being called 'Genie', aka 'Genius' for your regular francophone. Her mother apparently even calls the French media when they spell her name Eugénie rather than Eugenie . To add to the assimilation picture, all the Bouchard children are specifically named in honor of the British monarchy.

It's not her fault, but at some point her (already rich) father came into a contractual agreement with another tennis player parent and incorporated a tennis business solely based on her future earnings while she was a minor to avoid taxes. The courts eventually voided that.

To each their own but it's not very surprising that she's starting to get backlash from fans who, only on name recognition, were happy to have finally found a home-grown tennis star. Since neither her or her family play 'nice' off-court, most fans are turned off.

Dans le Journal de Montréal

Big surprise...

There's also the whole connotation that her parents are turning their backs on their own culture; someone with a last name like Bouchard who lives in Montreal yet speaks French slightly better than Harper speaks French is always weird.

I mean... initially when I read her name I thought she'd speak French, then I found out she didn't and that was that. I don't see why this is a big deal or even remotely important.

she insists on being called 'Genie', aka 'Genius' for your regular francophone.

I'm pretty sure this stems from the English pronunciation of her name. I don't think she's going around telling people to call her "genius"

Some people aren't happy with her and that's fine but I'm not sure I'd say she's not very well liked. At least, it seems to me that it's for the same reasons as everyone else with the handshake and what appears to be a bit of a snobby attitude.

That said, I don't really know her as a person and I just hope her tennis can improve and she can bring some success to tennis in Canada. She's still very young and has a lot to learn and maybe sometime she does things that are a bit silly but I think people's reactions are way overblown.

Last year people were way too obsessed with her success and now people are way too obsessed with her troubles.

Think for a minute about how pedantic it is for a girl named Bouchard, from Westmount, who will barely give an interview in French (or English), to have her mother call the media to correct the accent on her name.

Think of how pedantic of a father you have that he sees your earnings as a) a potential source of income for himself and b) a way to skip taxes. When you're 12!

Think of how pedantic it is to name your children after the British monarchy in Quebec.

Think of how pedantic it is not to shake your opponent's hand in a tennis match.

You might not think it's a big deal that she doesn't speak French like a native, but for some it does. It's a sign of English assimilation in your own province. She could be smart and deal with her image here, but she prefers to not deal with it and look for fame elsewhere. It's her choice, but you can't really expect the fans in Quebec to go wild about her PR strategy.

[–]Sehs 3

I'm not really sure what you mean by pedantic in this context but

Think for a minute about how pedantic it is for a girl named Bouchard, from Westmount, who will barely give an interview in French (or English), to have her mother call the media to correct the accent on her name.

She's called Eugenie not Eugénie. I don't see what's wrong with wanting to have her name spelled correctly.

Think of how pedantic it is to name your children after the British monarchy in Quebec.

I mean... so what? Plenty of people are called William or Elizabeth or Victoria and they're from Quebec. Why should anyone be making anything of this? There's more than just French in Quebec.

At the risk of repeating myself, there's more than just French speaking people in Quebec, particularly in Montreal. It seems to me like there's a community of people taking offense just because they can.

She's already on billboards and big ads in the Eaton Center in Montreal so she's doing her thing with PR.

I agree that she could do more if she really wanted to but I just don't see what the big deal is about. It seems to me like it's the media just fishing for stories. I'm not saying she's perfect and you have some other points that I can agree with but if people are being turned off by the fact that she's not French speaking and she has an English name then that's their problem.

Hey, I'm telling you why, you can not agree with it, that's your prerogative, but it does not negate the fact that it's part of the reason why she is not particularly liked. I'm just saying she isn't particularly good at handling her PR here and, as this gif suggests, she isn't really good at handling it elsewhere.

[–]Sehs 2

Right, my bad. I guess I just have a bit of a hard time understanding it. I mean, I do and don't. I can't say that I'm particularly surprised by I still find it a bit odd.

Her and her sister(s) are spoiled brats

Back story? I thought she would be revered in La Belle Provence.

She was at first but once the onion started peeling, it started fading. Now that she's taken a dip in her performances and did so right after the event above, I don't see her coming back up. Added some context above too.

[–]Sehs 7

Not that it makes things any better but:

In a post-match news conference, Bouchard admitted that she has a grade 2 tear in her abs and if had been another tournament she would not have played this week.

Bouchard said she was "unprepared" for the match against Duan becuase of lack of practice, and said her "timing was off".

At the same time, the 21-year-old said she's not blaming her injury for her loss. "It's not an excuse because I chose to play," she told the media.

Mad respect Genie.

This reminds me of Kournikova after she was beat by Hingis at the Wimdbledon SF in 1997. She said: "You may be No. 1, but I'm more marketable than you."

She also said: "You may have won, but I'm more beautiful and attractive."

then she said "hey so..... can I be your doubles partner?"

The schadenfreude towards her in this subreddit is almost reaching levels as bad as her attitude itself...
