Here is a good article.

The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems. … When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.

...

I like Mexico. I love the Mexican people. I do business with the Mexican people, but you have people coming through the border that are from all over. And they're bad. They're really bad, you have people coming in, and I'm not just saying Mexicans, I'm talking about people that are from all over that are killers and rapists and they're coming into this country.

...

When asked why he was painting the 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country with such a broad brush when the number of rapists and criminals in that group was a small percentage, Trump responded, “I don’t think it’s a small percentage, it’s a lot. But it’s not Mexicans necessarily. They’re coming from all over.”

...

I told NBC I could not change my stance, the fact is that my stance on immigration is correct.

...

He also said in a statement on Monday that illigal immigrants are "pouring across our borders unabated. Public reports routinely state great amounts of crime are being committed by illegal immigrants."

It's like he's not even trying to be president. Good. I don't want to be sweating Election Night wondering if this stellar example of a person is gonna be in charge for the next 4-8yrs.

He's not trying. He ran in 1988, 2000, 2004, 2012, and 2016, though never for very long.

I think he does it just for the free publicity.

This is the first time he actually filed, he just announced that he would those times.

Got to take it up a notch, or people will stop paying attention.

This is the first time he's officially run. Like submitted the paperwork to the FEC

Suddenly I would be in favor of a constitutional amendment to allow George W Bush to run again.

And that's the point. Put up this intolerant raving bigot as a candidate, and suddenly all other more moderate Republican candidates look like a really good option.
He's basically a target to normalise the others.

Those clever bastards. And here I thought Ted Cruz was the red herring.

They must be paying him a grip if he's willing to lose all of his television deals.

Oh, I think that shit's all him. I can imagine it's a situation where he doesn't know he's the fall guy.
They've just given him enough rope to suit their purposes. And he's been emboldened enough by their confidence to hang himself with it.
This is all purely conjecture, of course. It's just seems a more likely hypothesis than the party thinking that he's a sensible candidate.

I agree with this sentiment. Jeb Bush looks like a reasonable and wise human being when you stand him next to Trump.

Don't worry about it too much. This is all just preamble before they try to put another Bush in the White House. I know this probably isn't helping.

It's not, really. What he actually does is bring out the far right-crazies and force other candidates further right to appeal to them. This actually hurts them in the general election. There is no point to what he does besides getting himself in the spotlight.

According to the paper I read this morning, these remarks got him straight pitched from the running. He's not even in the race anymore. Some very satisfied headline writer out there got to write out "YOU'RE FIRED!" to Donald Trump, no doubt.

He's hoping the radical vote is large enough.

Fucking WOW. Just... I'm utterly fucking speechless that he could actually have been that stupid. How do you run for President and say something like that?

Oh, and on the broader subject, we have, "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses, yearning to breath free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door." Right on the fucking lawn jockey by the front door.

BioShock, right?

The Statue of Liberty.

Ah....damn. I guess I've been playing too much BioShock 2 :P

He should have changed the last part in the first section to:

rapists. And some most, I assume, are good people. And it's not just people arriving from Mexico, but from all over the world.

That would've made it a little less harsh in my opinion but still. Illegal immigration is a big issue in the US but people still have to treat them like people not just 'stuff' that countries are 'sending' over.

Maybe some sort of screening process to judge potential that's not as intensive as current systems. That way we will have much less illegal immigration (because people would just keep doing it anyway and if they found and cheap and easy alternative, they might not). I don't think hardening border security is the answer.

Just in case anyone else was looking for this, there's video of him saying it here.

[–]tecrogueYep, that's a thing

As a note, since your question is answered, you can change your post's flair from Unanswered to Answered :)

Oops, thank you.

[–]tecrogueYep, that's a thing

No worries. At worst it's a minor thing. :)

But it's a thing. Yep.

He said that most immigrants are killers and rapists.

If you had a 3rd cousin that was a convicted murder but I said that most of the tremendousdread family were murders and rapists you would be upset too.

That's not what he said according to that transcript if you read further down I mean he clarifies but yes that original paragraph looks bad. He shouldn't have said it the way he did. "I'm talking about people from all over that are killers and rapist comming into our country" that's what he said

But its still pretty bad because of how inaccurate it is. As a child of two immigrants, and with almost solely 1st gen friends, I have to say, this is wrong. He definitely seems to be unaware of the term "brain drain". And he's not accounting for highly skilled and educated immigrants coming to the US, especially from Asian countries. He's also ignoring how immigrant Asians have higher earnings and education levels than the average American. Don't know much about immigrants from other parts of the world, but his generalization is outright wrong.

I agree but in this context he was talking about our open border with Mexico and how people who don't follow immigration policy like most Asians do because they travel here through ports usually, bypass the laws. It may be a stretch to say that equates some to murdering rapist but the very act of not coming across proper channels is a criminal act.

Aside from that he's a Dufus who shouldn't be speaking publicly if he would find his point and speak it in a way people won't take it the wrong Way he would be better off.

We don't elect a president to fix the good things.

I don't like the Trump I think he has no tact (one of his biggest problems) But I do think he's a straight shooter and tells it like it is. I respect him for that. One of the biggest problems in the US (bigger than immigration) is that out of a fear of offending people we don't talk about "people problems" that impact all of us and if you do talk about them you're ostracized.

    http://cis.org/ImmigrantCrime

    • In a 2008 study funded by the Justice Department, the Center for Immigration Studies found that 25 to 50 percent of gang members arrested in northern and western Virginia were removable, and usually illegal, aliens.

    • Pew Hispanic Center study found non-citizen Hispanics accounted for 29 percent of all federally sentenced offenders in 2007.

    • The FBI’s Most-Wanted Murderers: Of the people on the list, 43 individuals (57 percent) were born outside of the United States. If we use only those for whom their country of birth was known as the denominator (73), then 59 percent were foreign-born. The overwhelming majority of foreign-born murderers (35) were born in Mexico.

    • Manhattan Institute Research- in Los Angles County, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide are for illegal aliens and up to two-thirds of fugitive warrants in the county are for illegal aliens.

There is a problem. Ignoring it because it offends you is short sighted.

That doesn't change what I said in anyway.

I said that he implied IMMIGRANTS are mostly rapists and murderers which come from all over not just Mexico.

You just quoted exactly what I am talking about. Ha.

No you said MOST immigrants. There's a difference

Are we ok with the tradeoff though? Illegal immigration is a problem even if only 1% of the people that come are bad. The country gets bent out of shape when an escaped convict is a murderer. With immigrants we don't know if all of them are just trying to survive. If people were openly and honestly saying they're ok with the small percentage of bad eggs because they want to help the majority of good illegals then we could have a real debate instead of this stupid they hate x race all the time. Once the real world starts spilling into our good neighborhoods then the debate will finally happen.

"I don't think it's a small percentage. It's a lot. They are coming from all over."

So, there ends the semantics game. A lot. From all over.

Yes. From all over. He's not talking about Mexicans specifically. It's not semantics it's just you pressing and altering your agenda without admitting you were simply wrong.

Either way it doesn't matter. He said what he said in a crappy way. I don't like him or support him but I can't be upset over someone taking something he said outbid context and riling up everyone who refuses to listen/read what he said in full.

Also when he announced his candidacy :

“Mexico has not treated us well,” Trump said. “Mexico treats us as though we are stupid people, which of course our leaders are. I don’t blame them. China’s even worse.”

Asked how he would force Mexico to build his promised anti-immigrant wall, he said: “I would force them because we give them a fortune. Mexico makes a fortune because of us. A wall is a tiny little peanut compared to that. I would do something very severe unless they contributed or gave us the money to build the wall. I would build it. I’m very good at building things.”

tl;dr - Trump is a rich asshole who surrounded himself so thoroughly with yes-men that he has now achieved perfect assholeness.

Who cares what Trump says about anything? How could it possibly matter to any thinking adult?

Because it's all over my newsfeed and I wanted to know what all the hub bub was about.
