I lost a few brain cells reading that guys retarded comments and I don't have many left to lose. You owe me OP.

I'll give you gold if you stop using the word "retarded" as a slur.

There are over one million words in the English language. We as human beings can be better people if we stop insulting the developmentally delayed by comparing them to complete jerks.

So you never call anything stupid, idiotic or dumb?

[–]mizmooseHated At Every Size

The argument of whether one word is bad doesn't negate the idea that another word is bad.

Of course, but it would be hypocritical to criticise someone for doing something that you also do yourself. That's why I was asking if you used those words. If you don't use them ever, then fair enough I take your point.

[–]mizmooseHated At Every Size

I don't use the retard. There are other words I don't use as well.

It's not a game of all or nothing. It's not a comparison. i'm asking people to stop using one word.

It's like when you're pulled over for speeding on the highway. You can tell the cop, "But I was going as fast as everyone else!" and the cop will tell you something like, "Yeah, but them breaking the law doesn't negate YOU breaking the law, and I got YOU."

No, it's more like if you're speeding along the motorway and someone else, traveling at the same speed, asks you to slow down.

Your criticism of the word 'retard' is arguably valid, but if you accept it's wrong for those reasons it's also wrong to use words like 'stupid' and 'dumb' etc.

Again, if you never use words like that then fair enough I respect that.

It's not a competition. "But THIS word is worse than THAT word, so you can't use both."

You don't want to stop using retard? I'm not the word police. I'm not going to give you a ticket. All I can do is ask you to please stop.

I didn't say it was a competition. I was asking if you used those words, that's all. Because if you do, you're asking me to stop doing something which you do yourself.

I don't use the word retard. I find it offensive, rude, and demeaning.

People don't respond viscerally and negatively to those words like they do to "retard". People use "gay" as an ordinary word now; we haven't gotten there with "faggot".

That was actually really hard to type.

Some people do find them offensive though. I mean as much as I dislike SRS they are at least consistent, words like stupid etc are banned, or at least they used to be, because they are offensive to some and considered slurs.

That was actually really hard to type.

I'm sorry but that's laughably over-sensitive.

I don't call mentally handicapped people, retarded. I call jerks, retarded.

Definitions of words change, you aren't going to change them back because of how you feel about the usage now.

[–]mizmooseHated At Every Size

By calling jerks "retarded" you are comparing them to someone who is developmentally disabled.

Typically the behaviour of the jerk is far worse than the disabled person, and you're insulting them.

Definitions of words change, you aren't going to change them back because of how you feel about the usage now.

Yes, definitions of words change. "Retard" used to be used "scientifically" to ensure that people were kept in institutions, abused, and neglected. Now it's a slur. You don't get to decide it's not.

I think there is a fundamental misunderstanding of words.

Retard doesn't mean what you think it means now. It means you think someone who does or say things without reason or without thought.

Yes, definitions of words change. "Retard" used to be used "scientifically" to ensure that people were kept in institutions, abused, and neglected. Now it's a slur. You don't get to decide it's not.

Actually, usage decide what a word means. The etymology of a word is the least important part of a word when talking about the current definition.

But, you are really fucking stupid and obtuse if you don't know that.

[–]mizmooseHated At Every Size

If you cannot argue without name-calling please leave me alone. I don't have time for nonsense.

You are sitting here arguing the root of a word should be how we perceive, treat, and react to a word in it's current usage.

That's really fucking stupid.
