I can't sleep because I'm stressed, which stresses me out because I need sleep. Or at least I think that's what's going on. It's 6:00 AM over here and I'm pretty sure I've been awake all night. I'm so tired.

So here's a game: name a fruit or vegetable and I'll tell you the PLU code for it. So for example you'd say "bananas" and I'd say "4011." I call this game "Putting my Bachelor's Degree to good use!"

It's really something to realize that your most marketable skills are scooping ice cream and bagging groceries, is all (although I will give PLU codes if somebody is actually bored enough to find it entertaining). I mean, maybe I'm just acting entitled, but after going through all the trouble of getting a degree from a moderately prestigious university (well, prestigious for Canada, anyway, but to be fair nobody gives a shit about Canada) it's hard to look at the return and not feel lied to.

Okay, Imma try to get some sleep. Thankfully I don't have to work tomorrow today, so I can get...five or so hours of sleep if I conk out now. Still need to go to the gym, though. That'll be fun.

[–]Opinionated-LegateGladius > Katana 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

that vicious cycle of stress and no sleep is indeed terrible. My wife gets it a lot and I've had it on multiple occasions. Hoping you get some sleep and rest, and good luck in the gym. I have trouble with gyms. They don't like me and I don't like them.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't know if it helps at all, but I completely understand where you're coming from. It's incredibly tough to look at everything a degree promises and everything you dreamed it would give you, and then look at the reality of the world around you. One way to look at it is that a degree in a certain field helps you help that field, whether it be by making academic contributions, sharing your knowledge, or what have you. It's a contribution to the world, but it's not always the most direct. A service job like working in a grocery store helps people eat. It puts food on people's tables, and provides them with something they need. It's not what you intended to be doing, true, but it's still something that's a vital part of society, and a vital part of a complex infrastructure.

I don't know if it helps at all to think of it that way. It's how I thought of working in Korea, and it's what got me to sleep there at night, when I slept. I think it also helps to know that life changes. You will not always be in a grocery store, bagging items and scooping ice cream. All your dreams might not come true, but some of them will. If you look at what you have and what you can do with it, it helps takes away the pain of what never happened. Trust me, I know. But you know we're here if you need us, and if it really does get to be too much. We're here to help, and we want to help, Arminius. :)

I saw Jurassic World on Saturday. Some of the acting was meh and didn't sense. But, it's a Jurassic Park movie. You don't see i9t for the writing and the typical and overplayed Crichton trope of "don't fuck with nature"--you see it for the DINOSAURS THAT EAT PEOPLE AND OTHER DINOSAURS. That ending was fucking epic. Also: relevant video.

Can I just complain about how dreadful their emergency procedures were? I mean, sitting and waiting hours for ferries to slowly take everyone off the island, really?

Somehow they managed to go to 'ferry arrives in 45 minutes' to NO ONE LEFT ON THE ISLAND in between scenes. Do you have any idea how long it takes to load 20,000 people on a boat, many of them wounded? A LONG TIME

Things that bothered me in the movie:

  • The kids
  • Claire wearing high heels the whole time
  • Claire's assistant had a horribly gruesome death and didn't seem to deserve it

Things that were so awesome that the other stuff didn't matter

  • Rexy
  • Blue

The whole divorce thing and the sudden romance was bothersome too BUT GOD DAMN IT REXXY AND THE MOSASAUR!

[–]MBarry829As decreed by Father Abraham 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Pretty much. Before Rexxy appeared I found myself groaning a lot. Sure there were some cool scenes but a lot was really silly (at least silly in the context of the tone of the original JP, not a summer movie). Then Rexxy appeared and all was right with the world.

Can we talk seriously about how poor of an idea weaponizing dinosaurs is? It's bad enough that my friends and I used to joke about it. We figured that raptors would be a great weapon to fight zombies. But then what to do with the raptors once they're loose? Well you get some T-Rexes? How do you deal with the zombie T-Rexes (or Z-Rex)? Well, at that point an Abrams tank should work pretty well.

After seeing that one I've rewatched all the other three (as you do) and spotted that the geneticist from the first film is also in the last one.

That made me think, and I've come to the conclusion that he is beyond criminally irresponsible. What do you do after predators take apart the first park? Make more, and bigger ones and release them on the second island. There they kill and kill in JP 2 and 3, but I'm sure it's perfectly safe to add them to the JW park again and make even bigger and badder ones.

That guy has made more bad decisions than anyone else in the series, and at after his sneaky escape, I'm beginning to wonder if he's not just a classic Bad Guy. He's one "Muhahahahah" from his villain badge.

Good morning Bad History! I've missed reading you guys the past couple weeks, been very hit and miss. I just returned from an overseas trip with my military unit, so that took up a lot of my time and I didn't have much free energy for Reddit.

• As I said in the moratorium thread, I oppose a moratorium on the principles of free markets, capitalism, and good old fashioned anarchy. Join the Revolution! (Or join in the fight for monarchy and oligarchy and autocracy and all those other good things. I'm open to that as well.)

• My facebook page looks like the skittles factory and the Confederacy were fighting. Lots of news on those fronts that I'm still sorting through.

• I'm disappointed more people here in the US aren't paying as much attention as they should be to the terrorist attacks in Paris, Tunisia, an other places last week. A lot of people died and it's something that is only going to get worse.

• I've got a couple personal blog posts I'd like to get up this week, so those are my primary concern, but I'm hoping for a post here this week. I've got to figure out if it's actually worth the time.

• I just finished reading Anthony Everitt's "The Rise of Rome" and I found it very interesting. My primary interest is the Classical world, particularly Rome, and he had been recommended as good reading by a professor. I thought he was good, he made it interesting without being too engaged in a story narrative and forsaking the actual historical events. But, as with anything dealing with the early Roman Kingdom and Republic, there is a lot of opinion and speculation in some areas. I would recommend however. Anyone else read that book or his other books and would like to throw in their 2 cents?

[–]pittfan46 3ポイント4ポイント  (4子コメント)

To be fair,a lot of the early republic and regal period of Rome is speculation. The gauls sacked rome in 390 BC which destroyed a lot of records.

I mean do you honestly think there were only 7 kings from 753 BC to 509 BC.

I thought it was good, he seemed to simplify a lot of the conflicts but I suppose that made for easy reading

[–]Opinionated-LegateGladius > Katana 3ポイント4ポイント  (3子コメント)

absolutely, that is the definite downfall of the period. Any author, no matter what, ends up with a lot of what they think went on. That aspect and the records we do have are what Everitt balanced well in my opinion.

And hey man, there could have been 7 kings. The illuminati have been ruling the world for a long time, anything is possible.

[–]pittfan46 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

I thought it was a good read if anything. I don't know if what he said was true about Rome going to war with southern italy. He made a dramatic passage where the Greeks disrespected the Roman embassies in....tarentum?

Obviously it was the joos who ruled rome duh.

[–]Opinionated-LegateGladius > Katana 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

I think it was Tarentum, though he did portray the Romans as very conniving in terms of getting their way through use of emissaries in a very aggressive manner haha. The fides romana was very interesting.

Dude, you've been blinded like the rest of the sheeple. The joos are only the fall guy.

[–]pittfan46 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think the Romans were able to convince themselves thst they were truly "protecting Rome" through imperialism. It made sense to a point, but when you're fighting a war in Macedonia "in the defense of Rome," there's something wrong.

And for the double double feature, and to round things off, one could watch All quiet on the Western Front after.

The four movies would be 8 hours and 17 minutes runtime.

I did a 24 hour playfest on Saturday. The way it works is that each team is given a prompt, and then has twelve hours to write a play, then twelve hours to learn it and perform it. I wrote this play about a superhero support group. Everyone had trouble learning their lines, and when we actually performed it, it went off script pretty much instantly. Half the jokes weren't performed, and the half that were were in the completely wrong order. My team still won, though, through my ability to convince the judges that we totally knew what we were doing, and that I totally meant to write it that way. It was good fun.

I also had a games day on Sunday. I dragged my board games collection to my old university, and sat there playing games of one kind or another for twelve straight hours. It was glorious, and it was decided by all that we should do this more often. I also learned that my little sister has a hell of a poker face (and that games sessions are greatly improved when everyone has to watch their mouths and come up with new and more interesting ways to swear so that they don't hurt a ten-year-old's virgin ears). Again, wonderful.

And I have been visited by the irony faerie. For the last six months, I've been applying for jobs so I can get out of this place and go somewhere more stable. On Thursday night, my husband - who has not been doing this - got offered a job out of the blue. He has a job, and I am still in limbo. I'm happy and jealous, but above all, just relieved, so incredibly relieved.

[–]pittfan46 3ポイント4ポイント  (6子コメント)

Just keep with it. You'll get something eventually. My dad always said getting the job is the hard part.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 3ポイント4ポイント  (3子コメント)

No, I interviewed for a job there. It's just easier to say "St. Paul" than "that job I interviewed for a couple weeks ago that I was really excited about, but in retrospect maybe shouldn't have spent the money getting to because yeah, I didn't do so well on the interview."

[–]pittfan46 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

You should call and ask about it. It can't hurt. They'll either say no or yes. It'll show you're actually interested in working for them.

No fun Australian politics from the last few days to update you all on. Good job on the gay marriage stuff, America, you're now ahead of Australia regarding LGBT rights.

Update on Thursday's post; went out on Friday night, it was fun but I don't think I'm the type to pursue much further with her. Still pretty friendly though, so a satisfying outcome for both parties.

Since semester's now over, I've got a lovely month of doing absolutely nothing. Fun. At least I managed to find some kind of work, but dear god is it tedious.

Went to Tankfest this past weekend.

Bovington is probably the Best Museum in the World (tm), but oh maaaan it was crawling with wehraboos! One even got down on his knees on the chalk and flit ground and literally started worshipping Tiger 131.

Meanwhile bad history abounded - apparently machine guns were the reason for the western front stale-mate and spitfires won the Battle of Britain.

As a bonus though, I managed to pick up some bits of fossilised tree while walking on the beach!

[–]Elm11History [his-tree]. A series of smug judgements about the past. 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Ah, heck. I went to Sinnsheim Tank museum in Germany back in 2013, which was quiet and pretty cool thanks to being practically empty. I suppose a lot of people draw their interest in tanks from 'big armoured steel thing with giant explodey-tube,' and don't really go much further than the World of Tanks forums to back it up. That's fair enough, but obviously leads to a mess in situations like Tankfest. :P

(Incidentally, I love me some World of Tanks. But for the love of God avoid the community.)

Good morning /r/badhistory!

So I've been reddit-squating on a sub called /r/mosaicearth the last few weeks. The inspiration to do so came after I found some sub that specialize in running in map games, and led me down a rabbit hole in exploring such games on other web fora (again).

What is mosaic earth intended to be? Well back in my alternatehistory.com days I was involved in running and playing this map game. The core concept involved transporting various countries with different points of departures (PODs) to a single Earth and the free playing what happens next. Our most successful game ran for about 6 months and was probably one of the most fun things I've done on the internets before.

So, I have the sub and very little idea what to do with it besides that. I've never moderated a sub before, and haven't ran a game like that in almost 10 years. So I suppose I'd like to ask for help in nearly all areas. If you're willing of course.

We found a stray dog yesterday. Poor thing was just covered in fleas and really, really skinny. She's really sweet but I'm worried about what to do with her. She had a microchip but the family isn't picking up the phone or calling back. She had a collar from the pound too, they said she had been in there two weeks ago, but she had been picked up. So either she's an escape artist or her family are jerks.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 0ポイント1ポイント  (6子コメント)

It's possible she was abandoned. A lot of people do that when they move and don't want to or are not able to take their pets with them.

I hope not :(

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 0ポイント1ポイント  (4子コメント)

Microchips usually have an address as well, if I'm not mistaken. Is that address close by that you could go knock on their door?

Although, to be honest, if she's not been abandoned, it's sounds like she's being abused if she's in such bad shape.

[–]facecubenever go full volcano 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

The company that handles the microchip won't give me any information about the owner. Just the dog's name and they'll call them. I'm hoping they're just out of town or something, I'm going to take care of her for a week or so and if I haven't gotten ahold of them (we put her on facebook and stuff) then we'll figure something out.

I don't think she's abused, I think she had just been on the streets for a while. She's way affectionate in a way I don't think abused dogs generally are. Underneath the fleas and the skinny she's pretty healthy, according to the vet. She got two baths yesterday. Didn't like that.
