Sweet, just what OOT needs, more arbitrary categories!

Pff that's not nearly arbitrary enough.
It needs a "no doors" sub-category.

I wonder if it will be any different than Wii VC? I believe SM64 is exactly the same between Wii and Wii U VC (although I may be wrong. Please correct me if I am)

EDIT: SM64 on Wii U has slower loading times than Wii VC

It's actually slower on Wii-U VC than Wii VC, loading times are a bit longer and the game starts up slower.

Thanks for pointing that out. I've edited my post now

How do these compare to N64?

sickos timing thingy dingy

As far as start times I believe Wii VC is a few seconds slower because it has to display the "This Game Uses the Classic controller" or whatever that message is

I think you're probably right, but this has only been announced for Europe so far. It won't be too great for most speedrunners anyway, since getting the Japanese game on any region Wii is easy, but currently (I think) you'd have to import a Japanese Wii U to get comparable times to what's on the leaderboards even if there is some additional lag reduction.

I just hope NoA doesn't ignore this for months. I can't imagine there's much work to be done for them to release it for North America. OoT3D is out of production so they can't still be trying to push that.

The PAL version of SM64 on Wii U VC runs at NTSC speed instead of PAL speed, this wasn't the case with Wii VC it still ran at 5/6 speed. This gives runners that live in a PAL region like myself the option to play on Wii U VC without needing to softmod a wii, buy an NTSC N64 or use emulator. I am excited about this.

Oh my god, really? That's so sweet... I hope they do the same for OoT.

Aside from the framerate, another very significant difference in PAL OoT is that the rolls are shorter which messes up a lot of tricks. I hope they change that to what it normally is if they release the game in 20 fps. I think they would, because the same happened with the GameCube.

the big thing that's up in the air right now is GIM. If emulation is made more accurate than VC, it might not even work at all. If it's made less accurate, it could result in even weirder glitches happening.

Considering VC games are direct ports, I don't see why it would be any different. Most likely, all the glitches that work on Wii will work on Wii U.

Imagine they fixed the emulator so facenutting doesn't work anymore.

facenutting

but it works on 3DS

[–]mzxruleszeldaspeedruns.com 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

the current setup doesn't work on N64, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to see it fixed here as it'd mean that the emulation has improved

Considering the correct behavior is to crash...

[–]Captain_X24Pikmin 5ポイント6ポイント  (8子コメント)

I mean, isn't the consensus with OoT runners that any official releases are fair game?

There was a lot of skepticism about the Chinese Cheating Machine however it is now obsolete

not obsolete for low% my man

[–]Captain_X24Pikmin 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Yeah, my question was sorta rhetorical, because last time I checked, the community didn't care, so I'm not sure why people in the comments here are acting like this release is a huge deal

Well, it's mostly because we really don't know what changes are going to be made. More excitement than anything

I haven't followed OoT lately, why is the IQue now obsolete?

there's a new glitch that lets you get bottle early that doesn't work on ique

[–]mzxruleszeldaspeedruns.com 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

A glitch called Get Item Manipulation (GIM) was found (i helped some), was found.

The way it works is you get control of Link by performing a trick to get control of Link while obtaining an item that he holds over his head. This causes a certain state flag to stay on, and when it's on it allows you to collect an item when surfacing from water. This we call Get Item Delay (GID).

Now there's a byte that determines what item you get when collecting things. Normally when you walk by chests (think you have to be within "Open" range), this value is set to the negated value of the item you'll get from that chest, then when you press A to open, it's set to the positive value when Link is suppose to obtain it. So if a chest has Deku Nuts (which is Get Item id 2), walking past the chest sets the value to -2, and instantly obtaining is 2.

While in the GID state, you can then walk by chests to change what item you collect on surfacing to a negative id, because surfacing the water doesn't negate the value of this byte.

The glitch crashes on all n64 consoles due to the game changing the id of the model being rendered over Links head, causing it to reference bad data

Siglemic warned you, but you didn't listen. Now it's too late.

Another excuse to avoid using original hardware.

[–]Jelster64Ocarina of Time Any% 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Playing on the original hardware is not a requirement.

Playing on official hardware is a requirement.

The Wii U is official hardware on which the game is officially released by Nintendo, therefore, we're allowed to play on it.
