I... Don't have a problem with this. These guys have difficult, stressful jobs, why the hell wouldn't they let off steam by talking shit while the patient is anaesthetised?

I don't understand why he'd be given 500k for... What? Being called annoying? Hurt feelings?

Did they fuck up the procedure or something too? I really am not understanding this at all.

They also falsified his chart by saying he has hemorrhoids when he did not.

Did they actually falsify the chart or just talk about it? I couldn't tell from the article.

How would you feel if you paid someone to do a job and they talked shit about your body and you as a person while you're not fully there? It's fucking horrible, and they should all lose their fucking jobs.

You may be shocked to discover that his happens pretty regularly in pretty much every customer service industry, which includes medicine. That doesn't mean you should get hundreds of thousands of dollars paid out to you because you overheard it and got your feelings hurt. The anesthesiologist should be dismissed from her job but this financial award is stupid.

How about they act like professionals instead of making fun of an unconscious patient. They don't even have the balls to tell them when they're awake, so they just fire all their shit at the person when they're knocked out and in their care? That's not right no matter how you spin it.

Edit: TL:DR: Doctors can be bullies too, and just because they're doctors don't make it 'fine'.

I'm not saying it's right. Obviously the doctor was being an asshole. What I'm saying is that it wasn't illegal. Last time I checked, being a dickhead wasn't against the law. She should lose her job and probably face action from the board of medicine but a $500K reward for "defamation" is insane.

It's where they'll feel it the most, so actually it's not really insane. The judge also had to set an example so others don't think this is OK behaviour. It's like a big time out for grown ups that don't know how to behave.

I don't think I'd give a fat rat's.

Everyone jokes around with their mates at work. If you work in customer service, chances are you're going to bitch to your mates about horrible customers; doctors will bitch about patients.

I don't even think they said anything particularly bad. It was more like, "Oh god, I don't want to have to deal with this annoying patient" and "haha careful you might catch dick-ebola" (paraphrasing obviously).

Maybe I'm interpreting it incorrectly, or have a warped perspective. I dunno. Seems like a storm in a teacup.

I'll sleep on it.

It's really not when you think about how doctors are supposed to be professional. You wouldnt' like a cop talking shit about you while you're out, so why the fuck is it ok for a doctor to do it?

SURE, you can talk about that weird mole or whatever at your party with your colleague, but while you're in 'uniform' show people some fucking respect.

Are you from Australia or anywhere but U.S.A? I'm an Aussie, and I was kind of shocked at how much money he got too. What they did was fucking bullshit, and I reckon they should lose their jobs, but I don't think he's entitled to any money because of hurt feelings. Seems to me that Americans are really quick to sue over absolutely anything and because it happens so much over there, they see this as not only normal, but entirely justified and fair. Half a million dollars for a few insults and a chart that says he had haemorrhoids is a massive over reaction.

As an American citizen, that generalization hurt my feelings.

You'll be hearing from my lawyer.

Yeah it may be a generalisation, but people in the U.S are much more likely to sue someone than someone here in Australia. Here's an interesting paper from Harvard that shows that Americans have 3.5x the amount of suits filed per 100,000 people.
