I thought I could handle Mr. Brightside. Man, was I wrong.

I physically can't do it. I think you have to have jimi-esque spider fingers to pull it off. It's one if the few instances I've ever had where it was a physical limitation ands not practice that was the hurdle

[–]EnectGibson LP StandardTradPro 10

I have big hands and it's an uncomfortable stretch for me

Keep in mind that you don't have to actually apply pressure to your index finger once you've hit the lower notes, leaving you free to get better leverage on the higher notes.

I actually never noticed how cool the guitar part to that song is because (no offense) I think the Killers are terrible and that dude's voice makes me fly into a rage. Well, not really, but almost.

Came here to say this. Those hand positions are ridiculous.

What part do you find difficult, the intro or the part where you play low E 3rd fret and G string 7th fret?

The intro. Ive never been into jazz stuff, which I assume has similar wonky hand positions, but it's just a difficult hand position for me.

Holy shit. I've been going through a bit of a Killers phase and have been thinking about learning some songs, after reading this I took a look at Mr. Brightside. Jesus H. Popsicle that's impossible...my respect for Keuning just grew quite a bit.

I gave it a good 5 minute try and decided it was not important for me to play this song.

Playing and singing.

Ugh, it's the worst. I can do it perfectly with some semi-advanced songs. But then there are simple ones with weird strumming/picking patterns where I just can't.

[–]CaptainDefectBC Rich 41

I just can't do it, period.

My mouth and fingers do not like to work together. Anytime I even think about trying to sing words, my hands stop working.

To be fair, it would be strange if he started singing into it.

[–]That_One_DoodIbanez 4ポイント5ポイント  (5子コメント)

Keep at it. Singing and strumming chords will eventually click. It took a long time for me but my practice dedication is shit

I feel like if I had learned to do it while learning to play it wouldn't be an issue.

Are there any techniques for it or does it just click one day?

Playing the guitar part until it is purely reflexive. Not having to think about what you're doing with your hands makes it a bit easier to focus on words. Also, practicing it slowly (as with everything).

I can only do it with straight rhythms at the moment. I'm not much of a singer so it's not a big worry for me. I'd still ideally like to have it as another string on my bow.

[–]Agentz101SG/Dobro/AC30 3ポイント4ポイント  (3子コメント)

I tend to bash strum my guitar whenever I sing (especially in the chorus or if the vocals go a bit higher).

It's always been a habit for me to get the guitar part right.

I have always sung while playing guitar. That's how I learned and I never have had issues either. I suspect that most people who have issues are already experienced guitarists who want to take up singing. Perhaps they're also not as comfortable singing period so they have to put more thought in to it.

I know exactly what you mean. If the rhythm is straightforward I can play relatively complicated passages while singing without much issue at all. Give me power chords with a slightly unusual rhythm and I completely lose it.

The strumming pattern throws me off for some reason, I just can't

I agree to this whenever anything really technical comes up in the song. That's why I switch over to the basic chord progression of the song whenever lyrics start coming up.

Also, I usually try to learn songs from bands that have a rhythm guitarist who is also the singer since, if they can do it, I should be able to as well.

I can play and the words come out my mouth at the same time without too much problem. Unfortunately what comes out my mouth can't really be called singing...

A band I played in back in the '90's wanted to do The Who's My Generation. I was bass and lead vocals. I took a lot of shit for not being able to play bass fluidly like John Entwhistle while stutter-singing like Roger Daltry. Fun times.

Yessss, I've been a metal guy for years now and just recently started diving into what I like to think of as "modern jazz," with artists like Chon and Plini, as well as some Snarky Puppy and the "classics" like Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Such an intriguing genre. Very difficult as well, but the combination of intrigue and difficulty are a great recipe for improvement!

I started playing guitar really, really young, with a really great teacher, so most of the stuff in this thread I just can't really relate to, because there was always someone there to show me exactly how to do it, not that it didn't require practice.

But, this. 1000% this. Learning to play jazz was like learning to play an entirely different instrument. Worth it, but frustrating as hell. I wish I'd been into jazz as a kid so I could have started early.

Fingerpicking. After playing solely with a pick for 6 years i feel like a complete beginner again trying to learn it.

I'm the exact opposite, finally getting around to learning how to pick but I always end up playing almost everything with my middle and ring fingers instead of the pick.

I began learning banjo some time ago, which is played with your thumb, index and middle fingers. I hage since adapted this technique for guitar.

It's great for solos because you have greater control to mute unused strings which could otherwide make your solo's sound messy.

Hybrid picking is awesome and I use it all the time. That being said, being familiar with the pick is a great skill. Run some chromatic scales with a metronome and try to invent your own patterns (for example, ill skip strings sometimes, or start one fret higher than I did on the last string playing in a V formation.)

Isolate your pinky, ring, middle, and index fingers on the 1, 2, 3, and 4 strings. Use your thumb to alternate between the 5 and 6 string. Then just arrpegiate different chords you know and try to find different patterns. Always use a metronome!

Garage rock. Specifically 2-3 peice bands that play simple riffs that actually move people both live and on album. That takes way more artistic skill than most people think.

imagine writing an album you will play to stadiums and that will be in the radio and torn apart by critics that is based of only your vocals and one instrument with a drummer and maybe a bassist.

I find anything from the Grateful Dead to be so damn hard. Though I am still a beginner so that may be the reason.

I learned to play the guitar by listening to Jerry so much that now everything else is hard

I personally find Bobby's stuff harder technically. Jerry's style and tone are distinct and hard to imitate, but Bobby uses the weirdest chord shapes and changes between them effortlessly. And I notice there aren't a ton of tabs out there for Grateful Dead rhythm guitar, so if I want to be exact with anything I'm usually trying to figure it out by ear.

Yeah, that's very true. I play rhythm like bobby in terms of that upbeaty jazz strumming, but the chord shapes he uses are out of this world

Bobby helped me realize being a rhythm guitarist doesn't mean you skill is particularly lesser to a lead guitarist's and that playing rhythm is pretty damn cool.

A friend of the devil is perhaps the hardest song I have ever tried to learn.

I was going to say this. Even when it's not really that difficult, I always seem to have underestimated enough to feel like an ass.

You'd think I would have learned after the first few times.

The opening lick from Rush's Spirit of Radio springs to mind. It doesn't sound that fast or complicated, but I just find it super awkward to play for some reason.

[–]MpegEVILEpiphone LP / Marshall MG30DFX 8

[–]SecondHeatCharvel & Kramer 4

It's how the picking is set up. Switches between outside and inside picking, and inside picking is pretty much inevitably going to throw anyone off. Especially on the high strings.

That one just came really easy for me for some reason, I have seen people that are far better guitar players than me, struggle with it. Maybe thats because I spend all my time on technique instead of songs or theory.

The "thumping" technique popularized on guitar by Tosin Abasi. I had seen it done on basses and it didn't look too bad but for some reason its exceedingly difficult to get that percussive sound on a lighter gauge string. I either fuck it up completely or it just sounds like I'm picking with my thumb

Tosin Abasi

I'm convinced this guy has the anatomy of General Grievous and the other arms are just invisible. It always sounds like two or three people when he plays.

The most incredible part is watching him play. He sounds like 3 people but looks like he's hardly moving his fingers. That guy defines 'economy' playing

It took me forever to get this technique but what helped was watching victor wooten teach it. His approach was start by alternate picking chromatic scales with your thumb. Once you get comfortable with the motion, then start playing single note triplets and including your index finger.

I think the absolute hardest part of playing guitar is learning a song.

As in REALLY learning a song.

We can listen to Free Fallin, three chords over and over, but it can be difficult to find a legitimate, correct source on HOW to play WHAT three chords.

A lot of songs that use just simple chords like A maj, D maj, G maj, D min, A min, E maj and min etc can still be extremely hard just because of a weird strumming pattern. There have been many a time I felt like a song was easy, with easy chords and such, but then the awkward strumming pattern or rhythm messed with me.

The worst was Black by Pearl Jam when starting out. That syncopation kills beginners.

The John Mayer style percussive hits like on "stop this train". I was like no problem that's piece o cake. Its easy to fake it with an easy version but to do it well took way more effort than I had planned for.

John Mayer is the first thing that came to my mind, glad you posted it. I knew he could play and the notes themselves aren't difficult but man the style killed me on the first number of tries.

Fingerpicking was also a big one, not to mention doing it while singing. At this point it's simple for me to strum chords and sing, but playing (even fairly simple) specific notes or fingerpicking while singing still takes me some practice time to figure out.

Master of puppets. Any new player into thrash metal knows what I'm talking about. Ita just power chords but its moving so fast at that shape that your arm starts to cramp up in about 20 seconds. For some reason its easier on a Gibson explorer.

Once you get it down, dont stop downpicking, because if you dont practice it the muscle used will become weak again. I didnt play MoP for a week once and my right forearm was burning because I had the speed down, but couldnt endure the whole song. Definitely a hard one.

Always been impressed by how smooth a lot of Metallica riffs are to play. I find Megadeth to be way harder to nail. Even the simple riffs are damn hard to get the right sound for. Mustaine has one hell of a right hand. So does Hetfield, but in a different way.

I agree. Mustaine is more of a shredder and Hetfield is just really damn good at rhythm.

Switching from Banjo 3 finger style to Dobro. Ah. piece of cake says I. Both open G. GBDGBD on the dobro. similar on 5 string.. How hard can this be... Getting rid of all those extra notes was crazy hard. 5 string banjo is all rolls.. Dobro has some rolls but throw in a slide, lay it down on you lap. Just not the piece of cake I thought.
But I will get it.. Besides. The banjo is LOUD. It drove my wife nuts it was so loud. Dobro is loud but not as harsh and cutting.

I actually don't understand how the instrument is played. I've been listening to The Bluegrass Album Band and the dobro player is a monster. They all are, but I enjoyed the dobro player the most. Just today I tuned my guitar to open G and emptied a jar of capers that resembles a slide and tried to play but damn is it hard.

There are so many songs that sound easy and people think they're playing them right but they miss the nuance. Examples like the riff in back in black or the intro solo in wish you were here. People say, no that's so easy but they aren't playing it right. It drives me nuts.

Little Martha. I thought "Hey, you can play fingerstyle pretty solid, why not try it". Man that rhythm is way harder than expected (and the full on barrée doesn't help either). It's not exactly hard after a few hours of practise but I thought it would take about 1-2 hours and done.

Surf tremolo picking. One day I'll get Misirlou right.

This may sound counter intuitive, but try using a heavy, rigid pick. When you use a light, flexible one and play fast the tip of the pick lags behind what your hand is doing. Using a rigid pick means the tip of it is always where you think it is, and it doesn't require as much range of motion.

Also, use a metronome. Start out slow and bump the speed up little by little. Don't bump it up until you can play the part perfectly at your current tempo. This goes for learning everything guitar related, but will definitely help you with tremolo picking.

This is exactly how I learned to do it. I started on Fender medium picks but I didn't really get the technique down until I switched to heavies. It made my thumb and wrist ache at the beginning but it goes away once you're used to it!

I think I perfected it when I was able to do it using the thick, convex-ish Jim Dunlop picks, but those get in the way for me now. And today I use Jazz IIIs.

I like to hold the pick sideways and use that edge to tremolo pick like that

What helped me was holding the pick at an angle. It is less intrusive to the string than holding it perpendicular. Put your thumb on the side of your index finger and insert the pick between your fingers. Also, I have found tremelo picking is easier and sounds better with jazz III picks. They are smaller and have a very fine point that makes it more precise.

The very ending of "Babe I'm gonna leave you" where he walks down the chromatic scale on the A string. The stretch from 1st fret on the a string to 5th fret on the high E string always gets me. https://youtu.be/iP9xMobANJM?t=6m16s

Just play an open a string it is the same note as the 5th on the E string.

It's the high e string or the 6th string... EADGBE that one. Can't play an open string for that note.

I would use the 6th fret on the low E string and 5th on the high e.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood.

There are a few Stone Temple Pilot songs that sound super easy, but Dean DeLeo uses a lot of unconventional chords, at least for where I am. There are people who can probably belt them out without a learning curve, but it always takes me a while to learn some of these STP songs.

Really? What songs? Everything I've plaited of theirs is fairly easy.

Sour Girl and Interstate Love Song. Most of it is easy enough, but there are a few chords that took me a while to stick, and I have to go through it a few times to get it down. It sounded simple though.

Ah, I get ya. It's just part of learning. Even if you've played for decades it can feel strange to run across a foreign chord.

The slide parts in Big Empty are so hard to make sound right. I really envy people who can play slide well.

This is what I came to say! There's this song that's impossible to me, I just can't remember what it is or who exactly it's by. I think it was either STP or that band I always confuse them with.

I find that even the "simple" stuff by EVH to be difficult to nail.

His rhythm guitar playing is pretty... busy? It's very rarely just power chords.

[–]tbenoit94LTD/Schecter/Seagull 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

So rewarding to get right though. EVH's rhythm playing is phenomenal. It really gets you thinking about how to improve your own once you start messing around with his style.

More Than Words by Extreme is the first song I learned to play 9 years ago. I'm still learning it, playing it properly was difficult, but singing along with it too? Its like starting all over again.

I get to about "if you only knew" before cursing Nuno Bettencourt to an eternity of finger blisters.

R.L. Burnside's "Poor Black Mattie"

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c8RtayjqqIw

Simple song, but difficult to play. People think "shredding" is hard, and it can be, but emulating Burnside's rhythm did not work out well for me.

Wait until tomorrow by Hendrix. I can only play about 50 sec in after a few years of trying /facepalm.

Taking proper care of my instrument. Also fingerpicking.

Also, apparently it's my cakeday :D

Punk-style eighth notes at a fast tempo. My upstrokes and downstrokes are the same speed when I'm just strumming chords, but when I'm chugga-wugga-ing, I end up getting about a 3:2 ratio from the downstroke to the upstroke. (It used to be worse, so yes, I am practicing.)

Modes after learning the major scale

Really fast fingerpicking. Like McGuinn, Johnny Marr, that kind of thing. Especially on a 12string. Surprisingly difficult.

Nuno's rythm guitar - first i was like "damn! it's so cool" then i was like "ok, he is from another planet".

Limelight solo... Damn

I remember reading that even Alex said he has to take a step back and a deep breath before playing it to get it "right."

Southern Belle by Elliott Smith. Thought it was just chords. Nope, chords don't sound right, it's very fast fingerpicking and staggered chords that change semitone at a time. You have to slow down the audio to really notice it. Much more respect to that man after hearing that.

The solos of Angus Young. They sound pretty easy, but then when you slow down the music and start trying to transcribe it, you realize that there is so much nuisance in it all. It's not so much that hitting the notes is the problem, but it is playing the notes like Angus does which is the difficult part.

OP can I ask how you went about learning to chuck and get the picking down? Ironically enough I just started looking into this song a few days ago and I find the picking technique really hard. Any videos or suggestions?

Very slow, lots of practice

Santana - Into The Night ft. Chad Kroeger

The riff just after the chorus. Sounds simple but it is a string skipping finger twister. One of my favorite licks simply because it is a PITA to play ;)

Been playing pretty fanatically for 6 years now, still have a hell of a lot of trouble getting Under the Bridge to sound good when I play it.

[–]Lumiii 0

On the topic of John Mayer, I have never figured out how to properly play the chorus of Something's Missing. He's strumming just straight eighth notes but he's making chord changes that come out faster than that on his left hand.

For some reason, I just can't get the intro to Green Day's Minority right...

Probably Doxa by Monuments, i know its not what a lot of people here probably like but i still cant play that fucking song. I have yet to see any ody play as tight as Browne does.
