That would be terrific for a horror game. Running in a maze, monsters near, and then bam. Cloth barrier. You have to rip it down piece by piece with your bare hands.

Also, perfect spider webs.

Also perfect space-time.

The Witcher 4 will have this implemented for those who would rather rip clothes off than talk them off.

rather rip clothes off than talk them off.

I hate it when people talk my pants off.

You're likely in the minority here.

Never gonna be a witcher 4. 3 is the final game in the trilogy

Let me dream okay?

Sure, go to bed and dream sweet dreams of witcher 4 and clothing being torn off with amazing physics

They will make a game called Cyberpunk 2077 next. This will be like TW3 in a Deus Ex setting. Considering how CDPR delivered until now, this gon be gud. Much gud.

They just delayed development to focus on expanding TW3 first though.

[–]New_new_account2 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I can't wait for spider webs that stick to your face in an Oculus game

Or the "clothing gone as damage" mechanic for games, as has oft been applied in anime.

Or with the Oculus Rift + razer hydra/oculus equivalent

well irl you could rip, the game would have to take away a hand somehow

Dear god, imagine if it's less cloth and more blanket thickness? Getting tangled up in it only to be eaten alive by whatever chases you

Or a monster tearing through it...

Midnight Train Simulator 4

It would work perfectly with Frictional's trademark control scheme.

I was expecting the cloth to be torn until it changes the way it hangs. Disapointed!

And then the cloth starts to bleed...

Wow I've never seen water simulations of this quality without long render times!!

How is this possible? I have been rendering fluids like that on blender recently and there is absolutely no way I could get that detail in anything less than 20 minutes of baking.

Dude's so happy playing em.

Can AMD cards run this?

You can, but it will be CPU-side, so you will get a VERY low framrate.

Mind you notbecause AMD hardware doesnt have the power to. But because these are nvidia demos running proprietary software that they decided not to allow on AMD hardware.

Also theres an app on the playstore that runs a smaller clothon your phone. You can tear it and it responds to rotation.

Probably not, it is an nvidia demo and based on what it is capable of it probably is for thier Tesla card. Thier Tesla card is a gpu specifically for running simulations and crazy complex algorithms. It doesn't even have a monitor port it so you have to run it in tandom with another gpu. You can do amazing shit if you are prepared to drop 6 grand on gpus. Given this is just speculation it could possibly be a Cuda demo on one of there enthusiast cards. It has been a while since I've built a computer so I am not 100% sure what they are capable of.

I sat here in total anticipation waiting for it to be ripped in half and then I realized this is what my life has come to. Waiting on the edge of my seat for digital curtains to rip.

Whoa...I'm sad now.

Don't be, I've now moved onto staring at my dog while she tries to take a dump in the yard.

I looked outside at my backyard for my dog after reading this. What does that say about me as a follower vs a leader?

Undressing Little Sister 3: Game Of The Year Edition

Please. You aren't even coming close to tapping the true potential of this technology unless you are using hundreds of tentacles to simultaneously rip the uniforms off dozens of Japanese school girls.

It is kinda, sorta there. Cloth likes to rip more in one direction than the other, so tears are usually non-uniform in shape. And, when pulling on it, you are more likely to enlarge an existing hole than to create a new one.

Yea, it does look more like if the user was stabbing some kind of a rubber sheet with something sharp.

Still, a huge upgrade from the usual indestructible cloth. If it's this far already, it shouldn't be that difficult to make it act more like cloth.

[–]Toaka 5

Yeah this something cloth-like in consistency without a model for threading. It's a big step up for gaming but nothing new in 3d design.

it shouldn't be that difficult to

I can't help but chuckle every time I see this phrase.

This looks exactly like the Ageia PhysX cloth demo from 2007. Their dedicated physics card was amazing.

I want to see them rip the sheet in half and see what happens.

This is pretty much the same as cloth physics in borderlands 2...

i was thinking the same thing. its 'smoother' in this video, but the general dynamics seem 100% the same

You say future but Physx is actually quite modern (and aging). The thing is, devs don't have much they can do just with material and liquid physx like this. When computers are capable of doing these rendering tricks in real time as little background details, it'll be different, most studios will include it when relevant as volumetric water rendering or cloth and canvas objects around the world, but simulating Physx liquids takes tens of thousands of particles being simulated, and cloth is about as high in tri's as a full character model. Sure even my modern gaming desktop can handle that, it's a static boring scene with nothing else going on. But to apply that to a game, ontop of conventional engine taxing. Your game is going to be generally cut down to compensate for the performance cost of having these things. So you need to come up with a real good idea to make these really worthwhile.

Can't imagine it's very light on the CPU.

It is all GPU side afaik

Yup, and it is pretty heavy on the GPU. The water simulations bring my 980 to its knees if I play with the sliders too much.

Still fantastically fun to play with though.

How is this new... Mirror's Edge had these effects powered by Nvidia's PhysX back in like... 2008.

EDIT: Here's a tech demo of it in 2008, I guess it's been improved since then though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8LpC0rrUC8

Cool thing about technology is that there will always be incremental improvements :)

back before it was Nvidia, poor old Ageia.

Sort of true. At the time, it was just flopped over from Ageia's PhysX.

And here is pretty much the same thing done in your browser.

So are we going to get a character in a video game who is able to be under the sheets instead of awkwardly laying on top of everything?

Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

I'm thinking Arby's. :P

Yes, and I'm betting it will be in a Japanese game.

Now they just need some fat guys simulated in there pretending to be weapons experts showing how different swords, knives and weapons can virtually cut the virtual fabric. Virtually.

Wtf did that curtain do to deserve that?

I don't know why, but for some reason this gif fills me with the desire to stick my dick in that fabric.

Oh man, Rumble Roses. I used to really like that review in Nintendo Power. Really really like it.

Softbodies are already a thing and in many games that have busty babes that move around a lot. You don't need physx to simulate body jiggle.

Holy shit, that is incredible!

What engine is this?

That is a tech demo of Nvidia PhysX

Sweet! Thanks

It is actually Nvidia FLex, same thing though.

That's amazing....but will it still clip?

It's beautiful, but I don't really care about cloth simulation. A bigger milestone for me would be realistic continuum mechanics for things like wood and concrete. Imagine a Counter Strike or Arma game with convincingly destructible cover.

i think battlefield did that.

Can it also simulate other types of cloth that would tear in strips or trailing threads?

where can I download this demo?

Wow, holy crap!

I imagine him pressing the left clicker hard every time he rips a piece off.

Not exactly future when it's already here. https://youtu.be/9k1idbbr2pw?t=3m25s

And been here since 2006. It's just the PhysX PPU card never caught on for obvious reasons, and now it's proprietary to Nvidia.

So why don't we have this now? Just too taxing?

THIS is the future of cloth physics! (left click to pull, right click to rip)

When will we stop seeing weapons and characters go through the wall, as well as both feet with their soles horizontal on a slope? I feel like fabric isn't the first thing I want fixed.

For a second I thought this was about real life cloth physics, like a new type of underwear or something. Still looks cool though.

R.I.P. FPS

You can do this with HTML5 Canvas/JavaScript: http://codepen.io/dissimulate/pen/KrAwx

If anyone is interested I have it also where you can add a texture to the cloth so that it becomes more like this video.

I saw that java version a while ago

wow can you imagine all the japanese games about clothes being blown off with this stuff? lets be real here thats where this is going.

Bullets piercing sheets on clothes lines.....

mmmmmmm......

Wow it's almost like physics simulations are a lot easier to handle in a small closed testing environment compared to a giant open world game.

I love seeing physics tech demos like these. Though, my favorite (And consequently most disappointing) one ever was the demo for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed where they talked about Digital Molecular Matter tech they planned to use for the game.

Long story short, it was a nightmare to implement. The resource cost of so many different physically modeled objects drove performance into the ground. There were many bugs and glitches in TFU, and so the DMM was toned almost to zero in TFU2. There are still plenty of examples of it in both games, but they had to cut so many corners to make it fit within the realm of possibility that it might as well have not been implemented.

TL;DR physics demos are cool. They're also ridiculously costly to implement consistently.

That's great.

How about we spend some time on better text to voice so the dialog isn't so woefully limited?

Coming to XBoxAlpha

I can imagine this in a fast paced first person shooter with a scene taking place in a tent city. Chasing down a suspect shooting and tearing through walls. Suddenly ending up in a cloth bazaar where he makes a stand, hiding amongst the hanging fabric he takes quick jabs and point blank shots until the player gets lucky and wings him .

looks better than real life

what kind of cloth would tear that easily?

Fuck yes, I'm that much closer to living out my fantasy of being a cat and tearing the shrimp out of anything that even remotely flaps in the wind. Now all they need to complete the experience is super vomit physics so I can puke all over the carpet/shoes after I've eaten those poisonous flowers for the 30th funking time. I'll also install the 'take a shit in the bathtub mod' and 'press r to meowmeow' mods once the full Cat Simulator 2017 comes out before passing out in the box of my super expensive bed that I bought.

yeah...no. Not gonna happen anytime soon

That's a really compelling gimmick.

More like rubber. That's more like rubber. Rubber tears. Cloth rips. You wouldn't tear off a patch like that it would tear down the seem.

I've seen this before - 7 years ago when Unreal Tournament 3 came out. It was running Unreal Engine 3 with PhysX. The PhysX software had some demos included, and one of them was cloth physics, very similar to this one. I think future isn't exactly the appropriate term.

This would be cool for rapelay.

Man I remember how impressed I was of Guild wars 1 cape physics... still am.

I ran those demos on my PC, don't see why cloth physics can't be in current gen games. Even Mirrors Edge had some cool polyethylene-physics.

This is officially the cloth physics gen, and the best dressed gen for decades to come.

I hope devs actually use this, it would've a shame to see this kind of tech go to waste

It was already in Mirror's Edge. and that was years ago. I'm guessing that the torn mechanic is not compatible with the newer "clothing on human" technology we have now and is more limited to simple cloth that you see in this demo and in Mirror's Edge.
