Even kosher beef for the Jews. What a guy.

What a goy.

THIS IS A HUMOROUS USE OF THE YIDDISH WORD FOR GENTILE WHICH IS A LINGUISTIC DESCENDANT* OF THE HEBREW WORD FOR A PEOPLE OR NATION INCLUDING THE ISRAELITES

I thought it was because that's how Popeye would say guy.

I'll accept upvotes for either interpretation.

No you have to choose. Otherwise someone is giving you fraudulent upvotes. And that's against the rules.

ambiguous reply

Don't you even start. You know ambiguous replies are also against said rules.

amphibious reply

Reptiles are way cooler than amphibians. You're against the rules.

said rules

Which rules? That's kind of ambiguous.

Da Rules, man. they also say you can't use magic to win a competition or interfere with true love.

Goes to show what an amazing pun that was.

HEBREW WORD FOR A PEOPLE OR NATION INCLUDING THE ISRAELITES

Including the Israelites

Gentile literally means not Jewish.

Is it me or does "gentile" sound a lot nicer than"infidel"

It's not you. "Infidel" implies infidelity. Gentile doesn't have a negative connotation in English at least, though maybe it means ass-licker in Hebrew or something. I don't know.

Nah, gentile isn't a bad word from a Jewish perspective. Jews believe that righteous gentiles go to heaven anyway, you don't have to be Jewish to be a good person in their eyes.

Do they grade on a curve? Because i've never committed genocide upon them. So i get heaven, right?

"Well, JarlaxleForPresident, you haven't obeyed any of the proper rules about eating pork, you've been quite a dick in life, and you once bumped up a restaurant rating just because they gave you a "choco-taco" after your meal. But Hitler fucked up the curve for everyone, so we're letting you in."

This is why Christianity exploded 2k years ago. They believe only Christians go to heaven and so have a huge incentive to convert all their families and friends to Christianity.

Yeah, but "goy" has a different etymology. It seems that at some point, "other nations" was shortened to "nations."

Goy, short for "goyim" also literally means not jewish. I'm not really sure what you're talking about.

edit: wiki definition

wikipedia:

Noun גּוֹי • (goi) m (plural indefinite form גּוֹיִים \ גּוֹיִם, singular construct form גּוֹי־; feminine counterpart גּוֹיָה)

(Biblical Hebrew) A nation.

(Mishnaic and Modern Hebrew) A (male) gentile, goy, non-Jew.

Thank you! It's nice to be recognized!

Not on the street, of course. Baptist in a liquor store and all that, you know.

Personally, I think the wood and sign on the most impressive.

I'm guessing there's a rabbi up in the tree who blessed it on the way down?

Kosher beef but no halal??

Actually, that's pretty darn American now that I think about it.

FYI Muslims can eat kosher meat, it simply has an extra step compared to halal.

yes, and in some situations the reverse can happen. My Grandfather's brother was very sick back in lithuania around the time germany was occupying it. Food was scarce and the doctor advised getting protein. No kosher meat, butcher lost his shop and wears. But a muslim neighbor had some remaining halal meet. My grandfathers mother got the blessing from their rabbi and they made soup and his brother was able to live longer. My grandfather escaped to Argentina with his wife. His family all died during the war, the neighbor also likely did.

So... you know it can happen, especially if it is to save a life in either direction.

I think in judiasm any law is allowed to be broken in order to save a life.

yup, in fact the rabbis go so far as to say it is a sin to uphold a jewish law that puts your life in danger

Same goes for Islam actually, you're allowed to eat non-halal meat in case of emergency

It's not that complicated, since the basis of kosher and halal laws both arise from the book of Deuterotomy.

With all the fear and mis-information about Islam, people tend to forget they are an Abrahamic religion just like Judaism and Christianity.

It depends on how "strict" the Muslims are. Kosher and Halal meat are basically butchered the same way (throat slit when animal is separated and don't see the blade) but for it to be "halal" you have to say a prayer while during it.

Obviously you're going to get different degrees for different people. Some might just say the prayer before they eat it, others might not.

There's a neighborhood in Chicago that transitioned from primarily Jewish, to less Jewish but largely Indian, to now primarily Indian but also some Jewish and Pakistani. Thus, there are halal butcher shops and restaurants. Some of the major suppliers for those butcher shops and restaurants are Amish from Indiana....

ah, America!

I'm Muslim married to a Jewish woman, I eat kosher all the time.

I see what you did there.

Which is funny because the Fleischer brothers, who created Popeye and Betty Boop, were Jewish.

They actually didn't create Popeye, who started off as a comic book character. They just made the cartoons.

I'm curious about what's going on in the background

Going out on a limb here* but I'm betting that's Wimpy in that tree. Probably got carried away and tried to eat a steak extremely rare.

* ohoho. Puns.

He assured him he'd pay Tuesday for that hamburger he had today, but Popeye was having none of that sassafras that caused the depression in the first place.

Pretty sure the bull knocked him up there

Popeye was interrupted by the bull while preparing to fist the gentleman stuck in the tree. You see, Popeye gets a sexual thrill from inflicting pain via anal penetration, which is why he built his forearm muscles to the extent that he did. He wants the men and women he anally fists to know they are being fisted by Popeye the Sailor Man. While engaging in (what he considers to be) the act of love with anyone who can handle it, he prefers to insert his arm up to the elbow, and then ingest a can of spinach, thereby engorging his muscles--often into the shape of a battleship or tank--while still inserted into his partner. This predictably elicits a fair amount of screams of both agony and ecstasy from said partner, in response to which Popeye pleasures himself with his free hand, while repeating the phrase, "I am what I am."

Lol what the fuck

so you're telling me you have no problem with the idea that he boned, butchered, cleaned, made sausage from, etc an entire bull in midair with no physical contact beyond a punch while also manifesting wooden posts and a canvas sign with text on it from nowhere, but it's just too much of a stretch to assume that process also included cleaning the intestines

Asking the questions that need to be asked.

Look, there was also a cleaver, not to mention the paint (though, I suppose, could be painted in blood) and wood for the stand itself.

No, no. This just doesn't add up.

Edit: AND GLASS FOR THE DISPLAY CASE!!!! No, this gif is so unrealistic I don't even.

He made it out of the pale-colored face skin of the bull. The shoulder holes are the eyes.

Animals are kosher if they have cloven hoofs and are ruminant, so this does include bovines.

However, to produce kosher meat the kosher animal also has to be slaughtered by a certain method, the shechita. Like the mandatory circumcision of newborns, the schechita is another Jewish tradition that sometimes goes at odds with progressive secular states. Some see it as animal cruelty.

What's with the guy stuck in the tree in the back?

You know...somewhere, there's a parallel dimension where this is real.

And they have a classic cartoon where a sailor with realistic arms punches a bull only to get killed by it?

He even looks out for the dogs. I knew i always liked you for a reason you drunken bastard.

I saw an old Popeye cartoon recently, and was shocked to see how open Brutus is about trying to rape Olive. There was no hidden message or coyness involved -- he was violently trying to rape her, and only failed because Popeye came along during the act.

Why shocked? Pepe LePeu was doing the same thing up into the 80s.

Knew the top comment would be about the kosher beef. Popeye was accommodating minorities before it was cool.

According to the biblical account, Popeye was given supernatural strength by God in order to combat his enemies and perform heroic feats. One example, the bull was flown up so high that it reached the heavens, which God was then able to provide Popeye with a meat market from the dead bull. However: his attraction to skinny women and spinach, without which he was powerless. These vulnerabilities ultimately proved fatal for him. Today as an important biblical character, Popeye has been referenced in popular culture and depicted in a vast array of films, artwork and popular literature.

Oy, vey, y'all. I came here to comment on the Hebrew written on the meat and 179 people beat me to it.

So... Popeye was a jew in good standing with his local synagogue. Actually explains why Bluto was such a douche and why Popeye had eyes for that kvetch Olive.

He even blessed some of the meat kosher. Thats some gangster shit

I see Popeye has the Bloody Mess perk.

Well duh the beefs gonna be kosher. Dave Fleischer was the original producer of Popeye and was a Jew from New York City. He probably went to a Brooklyn kosher butcher every week, so it makes sense he'd put it in the kosher sign: he hadn't even considered it not being part of the storefront image.

Once upon a time I went to a primus show. They were scheduled to play two sets with no opener and after the first set they put down their instruments and without a word walked off the stage. The lights never came up and on the screen they used visuals the old Popeye cartoons start playing. I mean old like the one in the gif. And that was it for like the 30 min break between sets, just super old, grainy, black and white Popeye cartoons. I was honestly expecting them to slip out the back and and just see how long we would all sit there and watch cartoons older than we were. Primus shows are always such a trip, with out a doubt one of my favorite acts to see.

Apparently somewhere in that bull was lumber, 2 butcher's cleavers, and a glass display case.
