What happend??

I feel like such a creeper but checked post history. The poor thing has FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus),which makes any surgery risky, and had a tooth go bad . The kitty is home safe and sound now.

No, that's awful :( glad kitty made it home

Not a creeper but a detective doing the work for us lazier redditors. Thank you!

God dammit OP! We need the everything is ok message to move on with our lives...

Everything's ok. :)

Can't put a price on love. My old lady needed a brain MRI. $4000+. It's only money, right folks?

4k? Christ

That has got to be some serious markup.

People MRI doesn't even cost that much. Does pet health insurance exist?

It does, but half the time, it's a sham and doesn't cover the super expensive stuff, like brain MRIs. I'm not saying all pet insurance is a sham, but really do your research and find out if it's worth it and what it covers.

There are two that are reviewed well that just started in the last few years. One is trupanion, one is healthy paws. The former paid out $5000 for cancer surgery for my coworker's Boston terrier. So at least there is hope that they are getting better!

I'll have to check those out. Because the one I looked into for my cat didn't cover anything it seemed like, had a $500 deductible and had out-of-pocket maximums, plus a monthly premium that was way too much.

Huh, yeah, my dog costs $30 a month for 90% coverage and a $250 deductible. The only thing they don't cover is the vet visit itself, regular vaccinations, and dental work.

Besides lots of dental work, I've hardly spent anything on my cats this year. Maybe that's only a good plan for dogs.

I also haven't seen a policy that covers dental.

Most human policies don't even do that. It's always separate. A serious piss off of mine.

Petsmart has one that covers dental and visits with slight discount on the rest. It's good for the unlimited vet visits and they have a dental maintenance plan, but doesn't sound as good as the ones mentioned above. I'm pretty sure it will cover nothing for the big stuff when it comes time.

[–]Bazoun 0

Yes. Not sure if it covers MRIs tho

[–]rooktakesqueenCrimson and Clover, tortoiseshell

People can be put into the machine and told "sit still for 20 seconds." Cats need to be anesthetized. Anesthesiologists make real good money.

Source: my cat just got a CT scan last week and it was expensive because of this.

It does exist, actually. Not a bad investment for coverage over a large amount. For example they have policies with huge deductables (which lowers monthy premiums) that can really help you in situations where vet bills are above $1,000.

what's really scary is that that number doesn't frighten me anymore. I have three dogs, two cats and two hamsters. This year alone (last 12 months):

  • major fight, dogs put under and stitched up: $1000

  • both cats' had several teeth removed (rotted) and dental cleaning: $900

  • two dogs got into cocoa powder: $1500

  • same dogs got into coffee: $1200

  • one dog got a bladder infection, which required antibiotic shots: $700

  • yearly dog checkup for two dogs, plus senior panel for one and heartworm tests for both: $900

  • one dog ate something off the ground and developed a cough (aesophagal injury sp?): $300 for exam plus cough suppressant

  • bonus hamster checkup: $80

  • behaviourist training program to stop fights: $650

Left to go this year:

  • checkup for third dog

  • cat checkup

it seems as though you should get insurance..

How could you possibly afford this... If I had medical bills that high for me it would be difficult to pay, I would need payment plans. I'm sad to say the ceiling of what we could afford for our pets if something happened to them is a lot lower than yours...

Entirely depends on their chance of making it and their quality of life after

[–]GetOffMyLawn_2 Torties 1 Calico Love Them All! 9ポイント10ポイント  (1子コメント)

It was a diagnostic. Turns out she had a couple of inoperable brain tumors. I declined putting her on chemo because she was almost 16, the chemo would have given her 6 more months at best, the chemo had a good chance of making her very sick. If it had been benign and/or operable then maybe I would have gone for it. Palliative care was instituted and she was euthanized 2 months later. She was a flaming bitch but she was my bitch and deeply loved.

Same thing with my cat a few months ago, she had them in her stomach and even if she had made it through chemo should would have only had another few months

[–]hailingburningbones5 cats and one cat-like dog!

My baby ate dental floss and it cost $2400 to have it removed. Worth every penny.

I'm so scared this will happen to one of my cats. I really super paranoid about string around the house. Which is really fun when you consider I spend half my time bead weaving, so I'm constantly surrounded by tiny needles and bits of string. :/

[–]hailingburningbones5 cats and one cat-like dog!

It was awful. He's such a precious little angel, and I was so scared. Floss can shred their intestines, so I was horrified when the vet told me that's what he had eaten.

I can imagine. I'm glad the little guy is okay now :)

While terrible for the cat, that was probably somewhat amusing to remove if they removed it from its rear end!

If you realise a pet of yours has swallowed string and it's coming out the back end DO NOT TRY TO PULL IT OUT! It's possible it has wrapped itself around the animals intestines and pulling on it can tighten it even further. Your better off letting the animal try and pass it naturally and keep trimming it as it comes out.

Totally agree.

Apparently humor is not something that's popular on this sub, wasn't trying to advocate anything like that - was just making a light joke.

Would this apply to hair also? I have long hair, and occasionally my cat will poop and I'll notice a strand of hair hanging out of his back end. I've pulled it before, but it just snaps right off. To be safe I guess I'll just trim it when that happens.

[–]rooktakesqueenCrimson and Clover, tortoiseshell

A single hair has such low tensile strength that it's unlikely to cause a problem. The hair will break before it pulls hard enough to cause intestinal damage.

But better safe than sorry, right? Not like it's that much harder to trim.

Yeah, I figured hair would likely be too weak to cause damage. Thanks for replying.

How would it get wrapped around its intestines if it was in its stomach?

[–]hailingburningbones5 cats and one cat-like dog!

Uh no. That could shred a cat's intestines. They had to cut him open and remove it.

Tl;dr: I did it so you don't have to.

It was pretty amusing. Many years ago, before I knew about not pulling out strings peeking from the kitty's anus, I did just that. I thought I was just helping out.

It was like pulling ripcord on an outboard motor. I pulled gently but firmly, and the cat took off in the opposite direction at high speed. He was normally a very regal being. Seeing him lose his shit was super funny. I'm sorry, but it was.

Of course, I know better now, and I would never do it again. As a matter of fact, I haven't. My apologies to my beloved kitty, who lived to a ripe old age in comfort and otherwise good health.

you made the right call

On this note, does everybody here know that there is such a thing as pet health insurance? It costs less than $300 a year and will cover 80% of what you need to spend in a crisis. A better option is just to put aside $300 a year in a bank account you are not allowed to touch for anything else. Start the very DAY you adopt your pet.
Here is an article about buying pet health insurance.
Here is a list of the top 10 providers of pet health insurance.
Your veterinarian will not deal directly with the insurance company. You pay your vet and the vet signs a form from the insurance company stating what services were provided and why, and how much it cost. Then you submit the claim to the insurance company for reimbursement.

I looked into insurance but some wouldn't cover him because of his condition (FeLV) or the ones that would were so outlandishly expensive it was just easier to pay as needed when something came up.

But I agree it's absolutely a worthwhile investment for most.

I'm seconding pet insurance. I use Trupanion, and it's amazing. I had to take my 1 1/2 year old dog to the emergency clinic earlier this year. The bill was around $1300. I submitted a claim and got reimbursed around $1000. I'm keeping these guys for life.

[–]lexisasuperhero"Bossy" the Siberian

I, too, am a huge proponent of pet insurance.

I work for an insurance company (that doesn't cover pets) so I may be biased, but it's a lifesaver when your pet has a sudden illness and all of a sudden the vet comes out and tells you testing or surgery might cost you thousands, having insurance is the best feeling.

I had to take my little guy to the vet last week for respiratory issues (turns out it was probably feline hyperesthesia and he was just sprinting around to the point of panting so no severe problems) and the vet tells me to rule things out they'll have to do $400 of tests. I didn't even think twice since I've hit my deductible for the year so 80% of the tests would be covered. Having a safety net is the best feeling.

EDIT: I have Embrace pet insurance if anyone was wondering!

[–]rooktakesqueenCrimson and Clover, tortoiseshell

Of the five cats in my house, the only two cats who are expensive as far as medical bills are the ones who wouldn't qualify for insurance anyway. Diabetes in one and FIV and cancer in the other.

That little face omg

Always reminds me when I thought 150 euros a year insurance was a bit pricey for my cats. That was until my large tomcat managed to run into a half-open door and spent a day getting patched up at the vet. All the sudden the 150 euros felt really cheap.

And I tip my hat to anyone who actually shells out money to keep their furballs healthy and happy!

Considering that Americans seem to favour private health insurance over "liberal" public health care, I'm surprised they don't seem to have pet insurance. I pay £130 annually for over £8000 cover. Totally worth it.

We do have insurance. It's probably one of the reasons why a typical visit costs $150 for a consult and a few tests instead of $45 like they used to.

We do have pet insurance. Most people either don't know about it or think it's too expensive.

Or presumably can't afford it because they have to insure themselves first.

It also is a very messy thing to figure out. We have a cat that ate a hairband as a kitten who I fear may get into trouble again and a cat who had a urinary blockage. I did some research and got the impression that if the insurance found out about those, they'd be pre-existing conditions and the pet wouldn't be covered for some things, which is entirely the reason I'd want pet insurance.

It's important to get the insurance ASAP when you get the pet. I learned this the very hard way with a dog, that cost me closer to 4000 euros in vet bills during the first 6 months I had her. And naturally the clause of recurring sicknesses haunted her for the rest of her life.

The day I got my shelter cat, I called up the vet that did the checkups on that shelter and asked for all the cats medical history. It was clean, so I took that with me when I went for the insurance.

So. Much. Gratitude.

I was 16, and I'd just sold a car to a friend and I'd just got paid. I had over $1,000 for the first time in my life, and I was on top of the world. Then, I woke up to blood all over the place. Turns out my poor Courtney Anne's uterus had become infected. It took almost every penny to save her, but she lived another 10 years, and I loved her every minute of it.

Totally. We had to spend ~2k to save our 3 yr old male cat's life when he got a urinary blockage but it's been 1.5 yrs, he's happy and healthy on a new diet, and we hope he'll live many more years. Same went for a foster kitten we ended up adopting who ate the only hairband I hadn't managed to keep out of reach. Then I think to the future and know it's such a tough call when they get older and you have to weigh the cost, quality of life, and how much more time you'll get with them but I hope when we have to make those decisions it's not too tough. Wishing you many more kitty snuggles in your future!

Totally worth it.

Poor baby. I'm happy he could be fixed :) Even at the tune of $1,000...I'd do whatever I had to do as well.

I"m not the only one this happens to?...This has happened to me several times over the past couple years, you never regret the cost when they look at you when they are feeling better and give you that"thank you" sweet lil Look. Thank you OP!!! :)

Will he be alright? Mine just recovered from a dislocation of her thigh and tail, they are so tough

Yikes. Poor kitty. He's going to be fine. Bad tooth.

Yep. Bad tooth but he's doing fine.

You gonna be fine.

[–]Rinboo 2

Oh man this reminds me that question : "what will we do if one of my cats need an expensive treatment or urgery ?". Me and my GF often talk about that, we agree we cannot afford any type of treatments, but I'm pretty sure that will not be so easy to take a decision if it happen one day ...

btw, I'm sure you took the right decision and this fellow will show you gratitude by puking on you pillow or on your keyboard :p

I've had several emergency vet visits for my pets, nothing below a thousand bucks, don't even blink twice at the price. Swipe the credit card and move on.

I have insurance for my cats, one of which has cancer and is undergoing radiation treatment. Even with the insurance, I'm paying a few thousand dollars out of pocket but as the op says, that's ok. Without insurance I couldn't even consider treatment so I strongly recommend people to get pet insurance for their animal friends.

What insurance do you use? I've had a crappy experience, but it seems like a good thing to have, so I'd like to look into other companies!

Good luck with your baby, that would be tough.

[–]Collaterlie_Sisters 3ポイント4ポイント  (1子コメント)

I use embrace - $500 deductible and it covers most things, costs me $35 a month for two cats. One cat's treatment a few months ago was $495, the cheeky bugger.

I wish we had gotten pet insurance earlier for our two cats. One of them has a heart murmur and severe kidney issues. The other has urninary blockage issues. Both are okay for now.

Was he in contact with another cat? Feline leukemia us my biggest fear with my fur balls.

Isnt there a test the vet can do to see if your cat is at risk of getting it?

As far as I know they can only test to see if your cat has it, not sure if they can tell there might be a chance of it. I could be wrong though.

One of our 4 year old fur babies has been at the animal hospital since Friday and undergone two surgeries for a urinary blockage. He's still got a catheter in and is about to get an ultrasound to find out what the catheter is hitting up near his bladder. So far they have capped our cost at $3000, but if they find a stone up near his bladder he might require another surgery. His survival is still in question. It's been a rough fathersday weekend for us.

Two of my cats have experienced urinary blockages. Very scary and life threatening if you don't get them un-blocked in time. By any chance, do you feed your cat dry food? If so, that is probably the main cause. Check out catinfo.org to see about the dangers of dry food. Will never feed my cats dry food again.

Best of luck to your cat. Hope everything turns out ok.

Had started typing as I read your comment and was about to recommend catinfo.org! She's a great, knowledgable vet with a ton of experience and very insightful on major cat problems. I agree with you, our cats get dry food as a treat, a few kibbles a day when I feed our semi-feral porch kitty that comes by for dinner but otherwise we're on all wet. Chewy.com is great. No sales tax in many states, free shipping on orders over $50 and no small print like the big brand pet stores about food and litter not shipping for free.

Have you made any of your own food yet? It took some time to get 2 of our 4 cats to like wet food but now they seem to have much more of a taste for meat so when we're in a bigger place I'd like to try. For now, trying to keep the budget in check. Mixing Friskies (no fish versions) with Triumph turkey and adding a little extra water. Been great to see good volume with everyone in the litter box and they hardly drink from the water bowl anymore. I felt so silly stalking them to the box for awhile but I was so worried about the one that got the blockage getting a good stream back.

I was pretty disappointed in the discharge instructions from the vet that treated our cat. They just said "Ok, here's your prescription dry food!" When in reality that upset his stomach and he is obsessed with dry food and will gorge himself to the point of diarrhea and vomiting if he gets free range.

Wishing you many years with healthy kitties! All our cats' coats look great and they're all doing really well on wet food. Sorry the reply got so long. Get excited when I find someone who also knows about catinfo.org, so many friends look at me a little sideways when I start talking wet food only.

Yeah, she has a great website. It is an excellent source of information on cat nutrition. It is too bad I found it after I had to go through two cats becoming blocked. Although I'm sure a lot of others found the website like that as well.

I did try making my own food last year, following the recipe on her website. I bought a meat grinder and everything. I actually found it kind of fun. Although, I think some would consider it more of chore, chopping up all the meat, mixing everything, portioning, cleaning up, etc. Two of my cats loved the food, but one of them would turn his nose up at it. I had to gradually transition him over to it by slowly mixing in a little bit of it with regular wet food. I have since switched back to canned food because of the convenience factor, but I wouldn't rule out switching back one day. I currently feed 9 Lives canned (I know not the best), and my diabetic cat does very good with it, as many of the 9 Lives canned varieties are low in carbs.

I hear you about the dry food obsession. Even to this day, if any of my cats hear a bag swishing around or anything, they go crazy.

When finances become more important to us than our friends (regardless of species), we become poor in ways money can never fix. By contrast, you spent a thousand dollars for something priceless, that's a bargain.

Enjoy the Reddit Gold, well done!

That's how we felt about our cat. He went through oral surgery and they kept calling me to get my approval for each tooth. By the third call, I just said to them do what's necessary. They removed 10 teeth and bill was over $1200. He was worth every penny. Knowing that your cat is safe and warm. Priceless.

So pretty

When my kitty was 10 years old, she had to have expensive treatment. We had a chat with her and told her she had to live a long life after we invested that much in her. She's now 19. Totally got our money's worth!

Look at that little pink nose... totally worth it! 💙

You must really love your cat :)

You have no idea. I lost my mom a few years back and I'd found this boy just before that. She was the only family I ever had and I got really depressed after that. Pretty much only thing keeping me going was him. Someone had to take care of him. It's not an exageration to say he may have saved my life. $1000? That's nothing. Can't put a price on love.

A bit more of background?

I just recently became a proud owner of a cat... Which also means I've become a recent victim to overcharged vet bills. I feel your pain.

That's why I don't own a cat yet. I can afford the initial cost and all the food expenses, but I don't have anything to put aside for a potential vet visit.

If you adopt a young and healthy cat, pet insurance may be worth looking into if it's just the cost of a couple drinks at a bar or a lunch out a month. We don't have it due to complicated rules about pre-existing conditions and I'm pretty sure we'd get rejected for the claims I'm most concerned about happening. But kudos for you for being mature and thinking about your future kitty's health and well being! Also, I highly recommend getting two amicable kitties at once. :D

Is the next step for Nations to provide free pet health care?

I hope so. A lot of people have and depend on their pets. Their health is just as important as ours.

BTW, I have Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. You can pick a plan but I pay around $16/month. It's not too bad considering what I pay for my family's insurance.

$2500.00 last year for our spaniel. He ate a handkerchief and it stuck in his small intestine. sigh

Glad your kitty is okay! I understand. It's hard paying that much, but then their unconditional love pays it back tenfold. I paid just over $2k for my kitty a few years back for emergency surgery. Hang in there, cuddle often.

My boy cost me 2 grand, our tax refund we were saving as part of our preparation to try having a baby. Worth it.

A lot of people are mentioning health insurance for your pet, have you also looked into vet offices that have health plans?

I know Banfield in Petsmart isn't always the best, but there health plan is really helpful and I love the vet we just switched over to. I pay $300 a year, he gets a comprehensive exam, a comprehensive exam + dental cleaning, any shots and neutering when he was a baby. Visits outside of the two exams are free and medicine or things used during his dental cleaning or an outside visit get discounted. When he sprained his ankle and had to get an x-ray it cost me under $500 taking him to their office. Only other problem with Banfield is you have to go to that specific office, other offices are only discounted.

There is a chance because your cat has FleV that it may be considered a pre-existing condition (because it was found before you got the insurance) and a health insurance group will not be able to cover you. I will probably run into the same problem if I ever decide to switch because my cat has luxating patella and herpes (the herpes isn't a big deal, but the knee-cap problem is since it could potentially involve a surgery in the future.)

[–]only_here_for_cats 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Does your cat hail from Detroit? I have a 2 1/2 year old female looks like his doppelgänger!

Love going kittys way, hope he's okay.

My cats surgery for a compound leg fracture cost over $10k in total. Worth every penny. He is the most athletic little guy you will ever see, and now he's back up on the 6+ foot dresser no problem.

You are a damn fine pet parent, sir!

I totally understand. My baby is sick today and at the vet. We were discussing that we didnt care how much it cost, that we would make payments forever if we had to.

My little buddy needed a surgery because of a prolapsed butt. My dad was talking to the surgeon the day we brought him in and he started crying. Telling the surgeon how he doesn't like seeing him in pain. The operation cost 4k and that day I learned my dad loved the cat more than me.

My wife paid $2000 for our puppy, and the love she gets from it is worth it. Our two kitties, about $60... but yea, whatever. Enjoy.
