I spent last week driving to Minnesota and back in a car with no air conditioning! It was fantastic. Oh sure, the lack of air conditioning got old really fast, and having to stop every hour or so to put the weather stripping back on the car showed me more of the rural US than I maybe wanted to see, but it was really satisfying to go for hours on end, watching the landscape change and the highway fall away behind me. I was entertained by how many states met my stereotypes - West Virginia was filled with gorgeous mountains and dead coal mines, Wisconsin had cows, Kentucky was loaded with bourbon (though I only saw three horses). My actual destination was really nice, too. Honestly, I'm glad I got a chance to go on a road trip, however slapdash it might have been. It's a good way to remember what it is you like about the US. I like seeing the landscapes, meeting the people, and watching a giant country go by. It's got its own kind of magic.

I went to Minnesota for a job interview, and I'm not sure how the interview went. I showed up sopping wet because I forgot to pack an umbrella and it started pouring down rain on my way to the place, so I'm pretty sure that made a bad impression. It's also the first time anyone told me that they saw the languages I speak as a bad thing (they were worried I might be bored because there's not much call for Korean or Turkish in Minnesota). Overall, I got the impression that they were impressed, but thought I was over-qualified. Ah well. I'll see what they say, and even if they say no, I at least got a road trip to St. Paul out of it.

West Virginia's a great state to drive through, or to visit for a camping/skiing trip.

Not so great a place to live, though.

[–]QuouarFactose intolerant 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

It and Wisconsin were my favourite states to drive through.

About ten years ago I chanced to be driving from the vicinity of Orange, Virginia towards Charlottesville. Beautiful piedmont landscape, rolling hills and sweeping curves all on two lane county roads and not another vehicle to be seen. It occurred to me that this was the sort of driving that normally only happens in TV commercials.

I completely agree. There were points that it took my breath away because it was so staggeringly and unexpectedly beautiful.

<makes no mention of Illinois>

That's about right.

[–]QuouarFactose intolerant 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

I drove through Chicago on the way up and southern Illinois on the way back. In Chicago, I was charged $20 in tolls so I could be rained on, nearly rear-ended, and take a couple of blurry pictures of the city. But I did get a nice sunset afterwards, and there was a decent radio station! :D

Southern Illinois was okay. I went into this one gas station where an old man was sitting on the floor because it was too hard for him to get to the bathroom. He refused my help. It was a bit weird.

What you'll actually get no mention of is Indiana because it was boring and I don't remember it.

I got my bachelor's in Indiana and this about sums the non-Bloomington parts of the state up perfectly.

South Bend's Notre Dame on the same name college's campus is worth a visit. The ice status (might have melted by now) that they used to make in Niles are neat, as well.

iA you get the job. How is everything? I haven't asked for a while.

[–]QuouarFactose intolerant 2ポイント3ポイント  (3子コメント)

It's okay. Going for a long drive did wonders for my self-esteem and sense of worth, even if I was exhausted the whole time. I haven't stopped having nightmares about driving, which is odd and annoying, but I hope it will get better.

Beyond that, it's okay. I really hope I get the job because I don't really have a back-up plan. I can't stay here, but I do need something in order to go somewhere else, so I'm caught in a limbo. I'll figure it out, though. I usually do. :)

How have you been?

[–]jaguarlyra 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

I'm still under employed, depressed ,and anxious. I'm thinking of applying for disability if things don't get better soon.I can't really deal with the stares anymore , they are constant and it's getting to me. I'm seeing 2 different therapists and taking med and while it's helping it isn't enough. However on the other hand I'm told that suffering either takes away sins or raises your level in heaven so there are major positives, I just have to keep focused on that.

[–]QuouarFactose intolerant 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

At the same time, life shouldn't be suffering. Have your therapists given you things to do to try and help other than just medication? Mental exercises or something like that?

[–]jaguarlyra 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'm going to be doing biofeed back therapy soon.

THE DOWNVOTES. I hath sinned in filth and now am filthy.

That said, I'm always surprised by how people can try to make logical hoops to exonerate members of a country that support slavery, which also started a war, and also seceded. For folks who might have been huge fans of Andrew Jackson they sure don't realize the irony.

In other news, it's weird to know that I can make a week's worth of minimum wage in my state in a day or two.

[–]buy_a_pork_bunListened to Hilter's Generals 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I tried. I can understand some people saying "have empathy and think about those who didn't fully support the South and how hard it was to move."

That's the best defense I've heard, but it doesn't change the fact that the South's position was even remotely defensible. I mean christ look at their constitution.

Not to pick on you, but incitement to imminent lawless action was literally defined by a case where the KKK marched, while armed, through a town and advocated violence in a general, indistinct way, and they were found to be protected. I think that the fact SC still does what it does is disgusting, and reflects terribly on every member of the Legislature who, every day, doesn't introduce a bill to remove it from the Capitol grounds, but you are quite wrong to bring up incitement to imminent lawless action. Maybe a lawsuit could be made on a Civil Rights violation? I dunno... there are legal approaches to take here I suspect, but it doesn't come close to violating Brandenburg.

[–]buy_a_pork_bunListened to Hilter's Generals 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Nah, that's totally fair. :)

I'm surprised no one called me on that, but a Civil Rights violation is most likely going to be the case. Although i wonder if a flag that calls for and has a past for supporting enslavement can be considered abstract? It probably is. Hrmm.

If there's one thing I've learned over the last 15 years, it's to pretty much stay out of this debate. No one's mind is going to be changed.

What we have seen over time is the general abandonment of the flag as a representation of country/rural/redneck culture, with it being replaced by camo....well, everything. Obviously there are still plenty of holdouts, but I'd argue that the flag is a lot less frequently seen than it used to be.

First the AC broke. Then my wife broke her finger. Then the fridge failed, and my joints hurt from just walking.

Gaaaah.

I demand a do over! I demand it for the sake of my sanity.

On the upside, Soon™ I can cover a fridge into a fermentation chamber.

Tell me more of this fermentation chamber. Do you just unplug the fridge and start putting stuff (cheese?) in it?

Plus a bit of temperature control, so that beer/cider/wine yeasts work at their best, for better conversion of sugars into Bad Academics fuel.

This weekend I went camping. Got to burn the winter witch. Did some stand up paddle boarding that was pretty exciting. It also barely rained on us. That's a record for my family. It usually pours on us. Had tea and a bacon donut at a cafe called "custards last stand". There custard was pretty meh.

I'm supposed to interview with a school in China tonight at 930EST. But my placement person didn't give me a method, skype, phone call...etc. so....yea.

I hear back from city year today apparently.

Is it weird that the Charlestown shooter looked like a redditor. And the CT subreddit was like...praising his manifesto. Ugh

Also, no sports are playing besides baseball. Helpppp

Weird. Connecticut doesn't usually praise anything outside of apizza and Yankees/Sox depending on which side of the state you're in.

Yea they have my phone number and my skype. I guess I'll just wait for a call.

So in the last two weeks, I've acquired an apartment in Pittsburgh for the fall semester, bought a 97 Volvo, and had my cats put to sleep. It's been an interesting June. Still need to locate a job for the fall that pays more than minimum wage, because 8.15 an hour isn't going to cut it.

Reading Barry Strauss's The Death of Caesar, it's interesting so far. The prose leaves a bit to be desired, however. There's a couple of passages that remind me of myself phoning in a paper back in high school.

[–]QuouarFactose intolerant 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

...why were the cats put to sleep?

They were 18 years old. One had cancer that had metastasized to her lungs, the other had kidney and thyroid disease and had stopped eating. It was the best thing we could do for them.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I'm sure they had happy lives until that, though. :(

Is the such a thing as a "happy Monday", bot, or are you just taking the piss?

Weekend was way too short. I hate it when I build up a lack of sleep during the week. It feels like I've slept away half the weekend as a result.

The weather was nice though, and one of our favourite places to relax opened up again after a 6 months refurbishment and ownership change. Luckily the new owners haven't changed the bits we like, and massively improved the cafe area and food choices. Should have brought the sun lotion though... ouch...

Mmm there's some delicious Lost Causery relating to flags going on here. I always seem to things I want to do an R5 on when the subject is on moratorium...

In other news though, the girlfriend and I just booked our trip to Alaska next month! Crazy excited about that!

The first half of the round of 16 was marvelous and tonight's going to be even better with the England/USA double-header!

IT'S COMING HOME!!! We're going to get knocked out by Norge on pens! Lindesvarne will not be avenged today, but Stamford Bridge might.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the New total war attila isn't buggy as Hell like total war Rome II was. I picked up yesterday during the stream sale and it's really a well made game and they refined the mechanics really well I think. Though I did steal Constantinople from the eastern Romans by sneaking a naval seige into a hun land seige, so that's a little gamey but super fun

[–]ciderczarUnrepentant Ouiaboo 0ポイント1ポイント  (4子コメント)

That's good to hear, though I'm worn out on Roman-era Europe. I think I'm going to wait for them to move to another time period or area. I'd love a second Empire.

[–]TheOneFreeEngineerEuropeans introduced kissing to Arabs 0ポイント1ポイント  (3子コメント)

The late Roman empire is so different from the early one it's a completely different game and it actually feels like it. The barbarians expansion to the original Rome was always my favorite.

Another empire would be good but I think I'd rather a total war China during the warring states period to throw some new blood into the series.

[–]ciderczarUnrepentant Ouiaboo 0ポイント1ポイント  (2子コメント)

Some new blood would be fantastic. Warring States, something in the sub-continent maybe.

I just get 18th century tactics more than the other games, so I selfishly want them to go back to that so I don't feel like a dummy. Also, they missed a huge trick not letting us play as minor states in the first one.

[–]TheOneFreeEngineerEuropeans introduced kissing to Arabs 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

Yeah I miss playing as every single minor state on the map. The subcontinent would be interesting, I don't know enough about the region to fully understand but my first thought is late mughal empire time period with the start of the east Indian company.

[–]ciderczarUnrepentant Ouiaboo 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't know enough either, just how the Rajputs and Sikhs armed themselves and how the Anglo-Sikh wars went. I'm sure there must be more given the number of players and history going back so far. That period would be cool, as would the time period of Alexander's Army tipping up.

This thread troubles me. I haven't been in a bio anthropology course in a couple years, so I'm not about to try and jump in.

The argument boils down to "humans were smarter thousands of years ago because they had to know more stuff about nature" and "we are domesticated and cows are stupid", which I don't think I buy. Prehistoric humans had to know different stuff, certainly...

I live in South Carolina, less than 20 miles from where the shooter lived. Because of this, it's very surreal and a bit scary to see how poorly some of them are taking it. This especially applies to my more conservative friends. They keep saying garbage on social media about how the pastor could have saved everyone if he had carried a gun, and that anyone who doesn't like the Confederate flag should move away. I agree that I should move away, and I'll be doing that in 2 months, but I'd also like to be able to visit, and I won't do that if people in SC are still being idiots about this.
