Because they have been a country for a very very long time. There military prowess since ww1 is quite sketchy

France has been around in various forms of United government for over 1100 years. That they haven't been the worst of the last century's bloodthirsty nations doesn't exactly speak to a bad record.

Hey, they were attacking Vietnam before it was cool!

Plus their domestic rioting every time their government tries to screw over its people is still pretty badass.

Those guys will start an underground insurgency at the drop of a hat, and do it well, too. Dunno exactly why they didn't see it coming in Vietnam though, they'd certainly done it themselves already.

Historical fact... don't fuck with Vietnam.

And I'd like to point something else out about your statement.

I will preface this by saying I don't own or flay the battle standard. But I do however thing most people that do. In fact do it to symbolize civil unrest with the way our government treats us now. Yes it is misguided in symbolism but the sentiment I can understand.

Looking for an easy to read formated articke. But in a nut Schell after napolean ( which already is a large bulk of french military victories) they kinda trailed off.

Asides from successfully taking some considerable African holdings and giving about as good as they got in WWI, and not to downplay the French resistance in WWII either.

Giving as good as they got in ww1 is a stretch considering they were decimated and occupied...

[–]BreaksFull 0ポイント1ポイント  (21子コメント)

Occupied is a stretch too, it wasn't like the majority of the country was under Germany rule. And having forces decimated was the rule of the day for the first world war.

Correct but there decimated forces didn't decimate the occupied German army. So no they really didn't give as good as they got. The daughter hard for sure. The inflicted damage but they lost and we're occupied by an invading army

Verdun was a bloody slaughter for the Germans as well as the French you know. They often took heavier casualties because they were on the attack most of the time.

but they lost and we're occupied by an invading army

They won and forced the Germans to some humiliating terms.

The allies won and forced the Germans into some humiliating terms mostly due to English and American armies. The French still had a semblance of a resistance yes but nothing to amount to a hill of beans

The Battle of the Marne turned the German army on its heels and destroyed the original German plan for taking France. Granted the British were there too, but their army, while probably the most experienced of the nations, was a pittance compared to the numbers the Germans and French put into the field.

Both sides lost roughly equal numbers in that battle, but it was a massive strategic victory for the allies and one that rebuffed Germany from taking France outright.

I'm not saying France is in any way a poor performer militarily now. All I'm saying is they are but a simblance of the complete super power they once were
