I'm not defending them, far from it, and I got a bit concerned when they came on too, but if you did a quick google search on women who have been harassed online in the recent past, their names would both come up. Let's please not make this into a bigger deal than it is. They could have chosen better people to highlight, but if we treat this like a non issue, they can't use it as ammo.

Haven't watched it yet, but you guys are surprised by this? I mean this is basically why all those people who worked in "games journalism" called themselves "comedians". Because they want to be able to do what John Oliver does. Become popular and under a guise of comedy advocate what they thing is right and wrong.

And for the most part I'd agree with a lot of stuff Oliver mocks. FIFA's corruption, Tobacco industry, maternity leave/health care in the US, and our jail system. Substantive issues that can actually have a major impact on people's health and financial well being. There is also the ridiculous stuff like the "get those geckos" and mascots.

But realize that the people who cry themselves to be victim have accomplished what they wanted. They have now associated the negative social interaction with another person online as a form of violence. It's the same reason why you have all these "safe spaces" rise up on colleges, and more protests of speakers for graduates, and why comedians have avoided colleges for their acts.

People like Wu and such, want "online harassment"(which in reality, no harm or damage has come to either party that would violate the law) to be illegal. They want to be able to throw more people in jail because they believe it empowers them to utilize the police as their own force. Which I can tell you from experience, police officers look at this stuff as a waste of valuable resources and counter productive given the damage said jail system(something John Oliver has covered with the Bail bond system) does to people who commit non-violent crimes.

They want to be activists and the popular thing to do is to identify themselves as comedians and experts because they win the pulpit of public opinion. Which then can be utilized to pressure law makers or give said law maker a platform to give reason to get their community to vote for them as they "did something".

Anita and Wu are just the best people who cry wolf and people buy it because it makes good television and gives people something to create content without analyzing the context for the issue they want to talk about.

Thank you for summarizing my primary issues with this huge push for online harassment laws. Nobody here is saying harassment is good. I'm just really wary of laws that could potentially prevent freedom on the Internet. If laws for harassment are needed, Sark and Wu are the last people we need to be advocating for them.

Its frustrating to bring them up as examples because we've caught them faking their own harassment in the past, probably my favorite example being when Wu tweeted out her location minutes after claiming she was fearing for her life.

Its like how cases where women are proven to have fabricated rape charges leads people to not trust the real cases as much, bringing up people who have been shown to fabricate harassment against themselves only leads to the issue not seeming to be as real.

With the revenge porn, How is it victim blaming to say don't do something that could lead to that, it's confusing the victim with the opportunity. People need to take reasonable protections for themselves, and not sharing intimate pictures whose distribution can no longer be controlled is a risk even if at the time its between intimate partners.

Not positive on this one... They have good ones, but arguably, House of Cards does an amazing job and you get a better sense of it when you can watch it any time you want than the piecemeal push of GoT which only seems to drag out the series for everyone, particularly this season.

House of Cards is one show available on one service (netflix does have other good shows, just not many).

HBO however has been making awesome shows for almost 20 years now. HoC's is great and all, but it is piss-and-shit tier compared to Soprano's, Curb Your Enthusiasm, GoT, Eastbound and Down, Band of Brothers...... the list goes on and on.

HBO just offered a service to compete with netflix and will likely (at some point) release full seasons at once like netflix does.

I guess all of this boils down to difference of opinion though. :)

I could say Orange is the New Black among other shows, but you're missing my point about the distribution service. House of Cards is available entirely on one date. GoT is available by piecemeal and you wait once a week whereas there's a new group of people that will watch everything at once and catch up. I'm not focusing on the shows, I'm all about distribution models and HBO's is pisspoor in actually servicing the needs of people.

That's why Game of Thrones constantly breaks piracy records when HBO doesn't have a legal service that allows for global watching at a decent rate (for example, Australia has to wait a few months for "translation") and it's entirely because of how their model is so flawed.

Because what Oliver says is harassment and what aGG says is harassment are two different things. Can we all just relax already? If the segment was about harassment then yes those two dummies were harassed. There is no denying that it happened, but there's also no doubt that the two of them have taken the harassment ball and ran with it.

It's stuff like this that causes GG to look bad. Freaking out over shows your weakness. This is just another pushback that happens and you need to get up and keep pushing. Throwing a temper tantrum helps no one.
